    easiest way to get the gearbox filler out is using an 8mm on a ratchet but use a long extension bar. go in from the driverside above the chassis rail. :)

      +Rusty Dagger Forge no, it's tiny which is why I don't have half the machinery I would like!

    Looks like ATF to me.Looks like a manual trans. from underneath to me.
    Looks like the plug was cross-threaded from the start.
    (not at all surprised frankly)

    Do the filler and drain plugs have the same thread? I have just done this job and now the head of the filler plug is bigger than the head of the drain plug, which seems wrong to me. Is it possible that I mixed them up?

      I’ve no idea but you have answered your own question. If you didn’t force either in then they must be the same!🤣🤣

    I thought the norm when filling gearboxes, axle diffs etc was to pump in the oil to the point it started to flow back out the hole, as a sign it was full?

      That is the established method but Ford or JLR in their wisdom changed it on this box.. However in the transit and mustang they all use different quantities in the same box! Doesn't make sense really...

      +garyhuston might have something to with different ratios on different vehicles creating different temperatures in the oil and allowing space for the consequent expansion/fuming in the box. Who knows? If it blows up they'll probably say it's a characteristic of the vehicle! 😆

    Seemed very simple, would you be so kind as to pop round and do my 1987 110 for me, please? :-)

      Never done an LT77 box so don't know how easy it is. Only thing I know about that box is the oil should be changed at least every year!

    Great video, thanks very much. Sometimes you just need to see the process before racing into a job. Where do you get your magnetic drain plugs ...and would you mind telling me the size for the diff and the gearbox...did you do the trans box as well?

      I just searched eBay, most good landrover parts suppliers keep them. No, didn’t do the transfer box, just gearbox and axles.

    You hear stories that Land Rover have reliability issues. How do you find yours?

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  8 років тому

      +al t so far very reliable but very needy! The beauty is most maintenance can be done by the owner and parts are cheap!

      +garyhuston To be fair a lot of the complaints I heard were from Range Rover drivers, and it was all the additional trimmings that they came with that caused problems. The biggest problem I do know about (especially with older discoveries) was the issue of rust. But then I think that was a problem with a lot of older vehicles, and these obviously received a lot more abuse.
