Defender Snapped Axle Fix

- The Axle on my 2011 Defender snapped after hitting a pothole this morning. It already had a weep but I didn't realise it was a crack, I thought it was my eyeball seal gone! Luckily the "fix" Land Rover added in the recall actually worked!
In this video I managed to weld it back together saving me a great deal of time and money!

Overhead in situ stick welding, that's not for mere mortals. Nicely done. Thank you for sharing. Wish you well.
Thank you.
Well done Gary. Man if I got down the ground like that, I’m not sure I’d be able to get back up.
As you can see i struggled somewhat!🤣🤣
Yeah, turned 51 last month, i can't get up anymore without making involuntary noises! LOL
@@TheChipmunk2008 51 ? You’re just a kid! Hang on, it goes downhill pretty fast
@@geedubb2005 gee thanks :D LOL
Right, now you are showing off😉 I was impressed with overhead stick already, then you do it left handed. Very impressive, on the floor, outside.
🤣🤣 I learnt how to do a lot of things left handed when I had my right shoulder rebuilt!
Re: never get old, Beats the alternative Gary :)
I sometimes wonder!
well done ,, I wouldnt have started that without a ramp and a decent mig gun ,,, stick, on your back ,outside ,now thats keen,, but as my grandad used to say , have to makes a hard master.
8:04 hey, the view of that head looks it could be me laying there 😀
Are you going bald as well!😆😆
@@garyhuston Ha! I have to blow dry my hair to fluff it up so it looks like there is something there
@@swdweeb mine doesn’t usually get that long! I’m ready for another crop..
Ha! I have the exact same kind of mask, and have had it for over 20 years. What rods are you using? E6013, E6010 or E7018?
As it says during the video, 7018
Wow..thank goodness for the landrover fix. Now is the other side ok?
I hope so Dan, I haven’t looked but there is no tell tale oil leak!
I can smell that burning gear oil from here.
Wish my welding looked like that😢
Definitely not my best but laying on my back and left handed I’ll take it! 🤣🤣
Gary,
Nice repair. I sure don’t weld properly and wouldn’t trust my repair in that situation.
You usually mostly mig weld. Any particular reason to use arc welding in this case?
Best regards
Frank

Several reasons, one is welding with mig outside is generally difficult as any wind blows away your gas and ruins the weld, the gun is also a bit big to try and get in between the steering components and lastly, the rods I used are good and strong for just this sort of application.
Nice fix! I don't know much about cars, but why would a snapped axle be leaking oil?
You really don’t know anything about cars do you🤣🤣 The axle is partially filled with oil to lubricate the gears within!
@@garyhuston well there you go!
If you don't ask you don't learn
@garyhuston is it the diff Axel housing that split? Did it split on a existing weld ?
@@smileykelpieif you watch the video you will see!😊
you axcel at welding Gary................
They don’t get any better do they!🤣🤣
Not many young blokes theses days know to put the wheel under the car for safety reasons.
I shutter when I see a young bloke working on his brakes or changing wheel bearings and they are under there vehicle full body or legs and they dont put a wheel under the chassis. If the jack stan or jack fails , I would hate to see the damage.
Not many young blokes today would know how to change a wheel let alone do brakes or bearings! They only just manage to drive!🤣🤣
typical car manufacturer, we built something that might break, instead of replacing the suspect bit, we will add a catcher so when it breaks it doesn't fall off...
Typical Land Rover quality and care. We know this part fails and can cause death to the occupants and others but we will did put an a bit of steel plate on, that may stop the axle to completely destroy itself. What a waste of money their vehicle are, not to mention the people that still buy them because it’s a “Land Rover”😅😅.
