I use a standard oil container, drill a 10mm hole and run around 700mm of 10mm clear tube through the hole to the bottom of the container and the other end up to the fill hole. I drill another 3mm hole next to it and put my air compressor gun to the small hole (forming a seal). I turn the compressor right down and pull the trigger - this will pressurise the container and force oil into the gearbox/diff/transfer. Thanks for posting, I love your tutorials.
Top tip. Always remove the filler plug before the drain plug. At worst, you can suck it out and refill, rather than draining only to find the filler is seized in.
I changed my R380 oil in my defender by removing the cubby box & then the transmission cover plate under the cubby box. Throw a large rag like an old towell on the ground for the little bit of overfill you will get. Then i simply attached a 2ft long hose to a funnel & sat in the drivers seat & poured the oil in 1 litre at a time until the transmission is full. Easy, no mess, no pumping, to trying to get oil to travel up.
best way to fill it with oil is to slide a 3/8 hose down beside the gear shifters in the cab then stick the 3/8 hose in the fill hole and fill her up from the cab
Great video! If only Land Rover made it easier to do this.....when you are lying underneath.....in the heat and dust .......of Africa!! Great filling tips...... I am off to find a filler syringe! Thanks ;-)
Not sure about on a defender but on the discovery I needed a 32mm spanner for the drain plug. There's not enough room between the shaft and the gearbox for a ratchet and socket. Great channel, thanks for all the info :)
I am working on a Discovery 1 too. I cut down a 32mm socket with a cutting disc on an angle grinder so it was only about 10mm deep. Pretty easy to do. Then there was enough space at least to get a ratchet in to finally torque it up or a breaker bar to get it undone. No spanners used.
Amazing video! Thank you for sharing, explaining, and taking your time to do this. You wouldn't happen to have a tip or technique for replacing the reverse light switch on the r380? I have asked many a LR mechanics, enthusiasts, and had nothing but answers of "good luck!". Cheers and thank you.
It's quite easy to do from top m8 take off gear selector and plastic console and remove rubber gater - u will see top of box - switch it screws into the side on passenger side
Hi great video, I replaced the oil just week ago but looks those idiots in my local shop give me wrong oil (EP80-W90 GL-5) I have problem with shifting the gears now (2nd gear especially when cold). Should I replace it back to MTF-94 imediately or can I drive the car for few weeks? Thanks
Rob K it is awkward until it warms up then the oil gets thinner and works better. Best to change ASAP to be honest since the gearbox relies on an internal pump to get the oil to where it should. If the oil is too think it won't be able to pump it.
Chris what about mtf94- as was told this was the best thing to use - swapped my gearbox over as old 1 2nd gear synchro was gone - filled with mtf94 and it's a bit hard to put in 2 when cold until box warms up- what u think I should do??

Your videos are fantastic you keep the info basic and easy to follow cheers

Loving the focus effects! Another option for filling on the vehicle is to use a short ketchup bottle to squeeze it in.
Brilliant 👍
Thank you, great vid 👌

Thanks Simon great to know it is of help.... didn't know one could subscribe less than 100%.

fist frames in the video is a Discovery 1. It is possible to get a socket and ratchet onto the fill bung but I agree it is very very tight.

@@richardl7689 smart, I wish I'd thought of that.
Excellent tutorial!
Do you have a video how to replaced the oil filter on a R380 manual gearbox? and what is the correct oil for a manual R380? Thanks!
Is it MTF 95 or 94? Just double checking !
Mumtaz ! = Excellent
Do you put EP90 in the transfer box?
Cheers
Nice one. Concise and clear.
Nice tools you have got there !! I have to buy me a set :-)
Amazing videossss

Does anyone know what size the copper washer for the drain plug is please? Specifically asking for the size and not a part number
fantastic video. 100% subscribed.

Im a bit reluctant to use ATF oil, is 75w80 a good alternative? Less thick then 80w90...
Great video! Do you know what the drain plug thread diameter and pitch is? I need to get a replacement
What's the significance of the tattoo at 1:45?
Great video thanks :)
is this gearbox in my 1998 300tdi disco?
Good video.
is Dexron III H spec ATF compatible - like liqui-moly TOP TEC ATF 1200 G (which indicates Defender on oil guide)
Great vid. What is the part number of the gearbox bung plug copper washer? can't seem to find one on ebay.
Finbarr Dolan TBH I don't know. I usually just go to the box of assorted washer I have.
Any Chance you can explain how to replace the R380 gearbox filter?
Don't have one m8 only on zf4 auto
Only lt77 has an oil filter I think,
Hello . What the type of oil for land rover defender 130 td5 2001 gearbox .
MTF94
lol! Must have been during some GOOD TIMES!
briansmobilecontact number
2006 LR3 same process ?
By LR3 you mean the Discovery 3? More than likely not. The newer way is to capacity fill means drain and refill with the correct amount of fluid
won't work on a Discovery or Range Rover though.
It's a oil gun I have one in my garage
