    About Off-Track Family:
    We are a family of 4 with 2 children. We are overlanding for years now on wild tracks in our Land Rover Defender 110.
    Our expedition vehicle is a Land Rover Defender camper conversion. Some people say it’s more like a bug out vehicle but for us it’s the perfect 4wd off-road tourer with best 4x4 camping set-up.
    We bought this 4wd rig brand-new in 2009 and the engine is the 2.4tdci Puma version. We transformed it time after time in a real overland 4x4 touring camper and it’s now a perfect off-grid truck for wild camping, bivouac or simply as an overlanding Defender.
    We love enjoying time in nature and exploring the world as a family.

    If you dont have a pump bottle and still need to get the oil in, you can always take off the gear box tunnel and access the plug with the spout in the bottle hope this may help out people who dont want to get or cant fin one in a hurry

Amicalement. L'heureux propriétaire d'un Defender 90 TD4 2,4L.

    May i also suggest the Ashcroft 1.1:1 transfer case gear ratio change. It lowers the cruising rpm by 250rpm, giving the engine a chance to relax more on long drives.
    Also there are the clutch options from LOF clutches for roadspec or extremespec. Either way it will all benefit the drive of the defender and bring more comforts to your long drives. They also offer an amazing clutch master that reduces the clutch pedal feel.
    Good luck with your build and enjoy the drive.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your message!
      Concerning the clutch we will receive soon the extremespec from LOF. Install should be for january :-D
      Concerning Ashcroft's transfer case ratio, we finally kept the 1.2 after discussion with Dave Ashcroft a few years ago. We wanted to install a 1.4 like in the TD5. We asked him for an intermediate between 1.2 & 1.4 but it didn't exist back in 2016. Now there's a 1.3. But I'm surprised that you are suggesting 1.1. When we used the Ashcroft ratio calculator, the best result for our setup with standard diff ratio was the 1.4 in the transfer case. Could you tell me more please?

    • @Nafskie
      @Nafskie 3 роки тому

      @@offtrackfamily The TDCI is not the same as the TD5. The main difference is the TDCI has an automatic VNT turbo always keepin the power levels at optimum. We are not goin to get into which has more power capability, but just raw out of the box power. Additionally R380 is a five speed with a higher first and slightly lower fifth gear. (higher means is lasts longer, and lower is shorter) The main problem is with the TD5/r380, in fifth cruising at 120kph is around 3000rpm, a bit too high for mileage. Common swap is to put in a disco TC of 1.2, it drops the cruising rpm of 3000rpm to about 2500rpm. MUCH better, but the trade off is first gear is high, so getting started in first loaded is a challenge of featherin the clutch. And in traffic its murder.
      Lets swap to the TDCI/mt82 combo. Out of the box, you have a lower first gear which helps with moving loaded, and your sixth gear is higher than a stock R380 and cruising at 120kph is about 2500rpm.
      Having followed your channel, i noticed you have tasteful mods that promote performance and durability. If you have a PROPER remap and Allisport Intercooler, which i found to be the best quality and performance in the whole market presently, you can run the 1.1 comfortably and there is nearly no change in the bottom grunt. but cruising speed at 120 drops to 2250rpm which is a happy place for the engine. And for long hauls, the 250rpm savings could help you stretch your range further
      I have a TD5, I tried the R380 with higher fifth gear with a 1.4 and 1.2 TC ratio. In the end i swapped the R380 for a MT82, and i also swapped the TC from 1.2 to 1.1, in my 130 all i can say is WOW. The engine can easily rev up, and cruises comfortably. I have a VNT turbo and all the bells and whistles to go fast. But i am only on 32" tires. If you are running larger than 32" tires than the 1.2 is fine, and shouldnt be swapped. There is a happy sweet spot for your engines, Goin below or above this area will make drivin a nightmare.
      There is a nice plug and play speedo healer for the td5/tdci so you may have an accurate speedo readout. PN DA1426. They have an app, so you may know how to enter the necessary correction for your incorrect speed reading.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 роки тому

      @@Nafskie Thanks for this very complete answer! I understand now why you are talking about the 1.1 ratio. In our case we are running 33 MT tyres 8 month in the year. We only are running 32 tyres in winter for short time. Now we have enough power and the rev are around 2500rpm at 120kph so it's fine. Just a question when you are on the highway, aren't rev too low if you have 1250rpm at 120kph?

    • @Nafskie
      @Nafskie 3 роки тому

      @@offtrackfamily 2250rpm, and yes my td5 has enough power to keep me at that speed even loaded, and enough to get me to a faster speed as well.

    Hello, and first of all, congratulations on your UA-cam channel.
    I recently had a puma 2.2 2013 defender. I started to do the full maintenance and i put motul gear 300 in the transfer case and I wanted to know what you think about putting motul gear 300 in the gearbox as well since in theory it has the same specifications.

    Hi! Great video series. Love it. And will soon do my gear oils on a td4 90. One question: in your transfer case oil change video you recommend motul gear 300 75w90 oil. I wanted to use this same oil with GL-4/GL-5 spec also for the mt82 gearbox. Would you see any reason not to use this motul oil for the gearbox as well?
    Edit: I now found the comment further below confirming that you used this Motul oil before also in the gearbox. Perfect!
    But maybe you can provide an update on the ceramic additive, how helpful you found it and where it can be obtained. Best regards from Zug.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the message. For the ceramic additive we don't use it anymore because we didn't see any difference. For the oil, the new recommendation from LandRover is to use the same oil for the gearbox and transfer case (motul gear 300) but we prefer to stick with the old recommendation one which is castrol syntrans for the gearbox and motul 300 for transfer case.
