  • There are a few final issues which we want to repair on our Volvo 850 before applying for the technical examination (MOT). One of the major ones is the faulty Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) which we tried to fix by addressing three common issues. These are a broken fuse, deteriorated wiring harness on the cables going to the ABS pump (which might cause a short) and possible faulty solder joints on the ABS module itself.

    - Project’s Background Story -
On February 21 ’09 our dad bought this ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate. The Volvo has a big emotional value for us and seeing the car sitting still for so many years and watching nature taking over broke our hearts. After nine years, and sitting outside for 7 of those 9 years, we finally got our hands on the 850 and brought it back to its home where we will restore it to its former glory. Once we finish the restoration, we intend to make a road trip and keep in the family for many more years to come.

the ABS control module overheat(power cables) and you have soldering problems cause the rotor of the pump stucks, open the motor and check the brushes , check the motor before the installation , also check the fuse (30A) and you are in the game ;), I have to extra working modules(2 mistakes) for cars with tracs.

Remove all the brake lines to the ABS. (catch the fluid)
Remove the 3x10mm bolts from the bracket holding the ABS module and pump. 2 are slotted.
    Fix it on the bench.
    Replace and bleed the system.
Heat shrink the ABS pump wires. The clip comes apart.
Re flow the joints on the module but first remove the silicone on the circuit board.

Goeiendaag kerels!

I Think when those pump motor had those Old cables without the isolation the could touch toghther and break the pump from inside cause of + and - touch together

That makes sense! Guess we'll see after we replaced it with a new one😊

For whatever reason that plug on my 96 850 also had all the shielding crumbling off that two wire plug to the TRACs controller. I’ve temporarily used liquid electrical tape on those two wires, but long term I want to either get a new plug or do what you guys did, replace the wires altogether. Nice video.

Awesome work guys. I had been battling with my ABS for over two years. I replaced the sensors and even one wheel bearing. Just two weeks ago I decided to open up the module and resolder the joints. Someone had also previously done that but only on the motor ones. I did the senior ones as well and that fixed the problem. So happy. Now I have to battle the lambda light (motor light).😅 Something about the camshaft position sensor. I suspect a faulti sensor as there are no other symptoms for a off camshaft position . Keep up the good work, guys!

Glad you were able to fix it 😄!
By senior ones you mean all the smaller ones I assume? We did buy a smaller solder station and solder wire so maybe we'll give that a try if a new pump won't fix the problem.
And best of luck with finding and fixing the lambda light problem! Wish we could help and give some suggestions but that's one problem we have not (yet) encountered😅

Het lijkt erop dat die draden goed warm zijn geweest, wellicht toch de pomp gewoon die teveel stroom verbruikt dan normaal wat dus wijst op een defecte pomp ;-)

Nice attempt to fix the ABS. I love the non-airbag dash pad. I would love to get one shipped to the US if you ever find another.

Yeeess! My fav sunday thing to do! the flying working dutchies on the favourite Volvo! good works guys! :) oddly enough I also just did the ABS Module thing but still havon the codes :D as of corrosion the problem might also be the ABS rings on the wheels or the sensors being lifted slightly up and the sensors are not in the correct distance to the rings anoymore. (if that makes sense). Groetjes uit Duitsland! ;)

Seems we are somewhat in the same boat then😅. We did replace one sensor but have not really checked the other ones so thanks for that suggestion and good luck fixing your errors😊😉

We replaced the front left sensor and the others looked ok including the rings back when we replaced the brakes. But we might have missed something so thanks! We'll definitely take a look at the those again!
