Hey Robert, I'm trying to keep my s70 in good order up here at college and sometimes my hanes manual falls short. Before that I've worked on it with my dad to replace a bunch of stuff on it (including the steering rack). These videos have been invaluable to me, thanks for making them when you didnt need to.
I have a 98 S70 GLT that I bought new. The ABS light has been on for over 10 years and I didn't get motivated to fix it until my speedometer and odometer quit working. After watching this video a couple of times, I ordered the module from MidWest, replaced it a couple days after it arrived, and I could kick my own butt for waiting so long to fix it. Robert's instructions are simple and thorough, the entire job took about 45 minutes. I used a thumb wheel wrench and the E5 socket to put the 4 bolts underneath the module back in so I didn't drop them. Thanks Robert, YOU'RE a GREAT Teacher !!!
I have also had this same TRACS/ABS light on for about 10 years now myself on my 98 V70. I only decided to buy a new module when the spedometer/odometer cut out while on vacation. Hardest part about the job was getting those damn clips to pop up all the way. About to test drive her now!
I 1000% recommend midwest ABS as does Robert. They did an amazing job and I had the thing installed before I even went back in the house after getting it from the mailbox. Fixed soooo many issues. Who knew the ABS module was so integral to the vehicle normal operation? Dang...
I have watched other videos you have made and love your videos. You are excellent at explaining mechanical stuff, and have really helped me a lot when needing to talk to mechanics about my vehicle. Than you
this video really helped me out, I actually had downshifting issue when coming off the highway, the V70 would actually stall after trying to start off the next red light I saw. after replacing the module I have had 0 issues with the car, all my problems have cleared up and I had every problem the listed including the shifting problem I mentioned before. Robert you are my guy when it comes to repairing my Volvo and I really appreciate all the work you do to get this info
My 98 V70 T5 now has 408k miles and I have ordered the unit from midwest abs as suggested. I will receive it tomorrow and will make it a fun project. You are keeping these great cars on the road--thank you.
Thanks for the great instructions and not so gentle prod to replace my ABS module. Ordered it on Tuesday. It arrived today. Took me about 30 minutes and I’m pretty much a novice. Did not have to remove the air filter housing to access the module on my 98 V70 non-turbo. When I removed the fourth screw, the module fell out on my hand. The most difficult part was to re-seat the large connector. Took two tries and holding down the side toward the drivers side. Held it down for 5-10 seconds and ABS light went off the next time I started it. Word of caution, hang onto the screws and socket. They are easy to drop. Thanks again Robert.
Robert, I just replaced the ABS/Tracs module on my '97 850 T-5 for the second time. I've owned the car since new. The module originally failed in 2012 and I had it rebuilt by the now-defunct BBA Remanufacturing (so much for the "lifetime" warranty). At the beginning of the summer, the ABS/Tracs functionality failed and then a few weeks ago the speedometer/odometer stopped working. I found this video, took your advice, and ordered a rebuilt module from Midwest-ABS. The module arrived in three days, I installed it, started the car, and the ABS/Tracs lights went off in a few seconds. The speedometer and odometer are also working. They even supply a loaner E5 Torx socket so there's no need to purchase one. I packed up my defective module in the same box the replacement came in and sent it back. Everything you say in this video is spot on! Thanks!!

Hey Robert thanks, good video. Guess what, I stripped the one on that far corner. I did everything, went on 4 mm, 3,5 mm even 3 mm and tried with some foil around the head.. in the end it was a completely circular head! I finally took a mini dremel and a mirror with some light, zip tied a couple of hoses and wires out of the way and cutted that bolt head to pieces. Took a whole day

Hi Robert. Question ❓. It's the same procedure for a Volvo 850GLT 1993, is just replace the ABS Module, don't needs to reprogramming de computer? Thanks 👍
Dont know if you’ll see this Robert but i was wondering your thoughts on if i should buy an 850 ‘96 that has the check engine light on and abs light on for 2,000. dont know much about cars so anything helps. Thanks
Hi Robert. I changed the module and the rearsensor. Still symptoms. The ABS is starting to pump for a while, than it is normal again, or it is going on error. Another reason could be the ignition switch. Do you know anything about that?
@@RobertDIY previous owner removed the shaft and I would have to buy a new one to replace it. I was not sure if this was the cause of the lights coming on or not.
Hey, Robert. At first, the abs light came on and the abs brakes didn't work. Then I figured out which abs sensor is faulty, on the back right the sensor was broken. The multimeter showed no resistance value. I was driving without another rear sensor. The abs light went out, but the abs brakes didn't work. Then I installed a new abs sensor to the back right. But the abs brakes still don't work. Sometimes I drove completely without rear abs sensors, neither left nor right, then the speedometer didn't work. But if the clutch only caught the left rear sensor, the speedometer began to work after a little waiting, but not immediately. I changed the new rear sensor, but the abs brakes still don't work. But the abs indicator light is not on. So is it the abs unit? The resistance values on the front left were 1017 ohm, is that good enough? still have to measure the right front sensor. But in all senses, the abs sign. the light should be on now that the abs brakes are not working, Strange.
Hi Robert, thank you for the great content! Is there any possibility that a Volvo 850 from 1996 accelerates just very slowly (feels like the engine makes no power) because of a defactive ABS / Trac module? The ABS and TRAC lights are on.
Hi Robert, Thanks for this video Robert. Thanks to you I was able to identify the module on my 1998 volvo v70. I’m waiting for a new module because I changed the sensors but I still have the dash light on?
Repairing the module is easier than removing the connector. I used an anglegrinder and a drill to open it and i just soddered all the contact points possible and glued it back with tec7. You dont need to remove the airbox or anything. Easier than timing belt even if you've never soldered before!
Hi Robert, ABS unit on my 1996 850R leaks fluid badly everytime I hit the break. Just wondering if all P80 cars use the same ABS units and have same power connector.. thank you for your great videos
Hey Robert, I have a 98 C70 coupe. Just recently, the Abs light and tracks off light came up....just after i installed sway link bars. I scanned the car and got two codes (314, 324) - both related to the drivers side wheel speed sensor....do you think the sway bars are clashing with the sensor harness? Or maybe its time for the speed sensors to be replaced?
@RobertDIY module is most likely factory. I will need to remove the sensor to inspect further. Although I do hear a sound just before the lights show up.
They tell us that we need an ABS hydraulic control assembly at A local repair shop ,they’re not Volvo specialist. I called A place that said it should be the module only . Can you help ? Thanks
How can i protect the abs control unit that remains in the car if i drive it? could i wrap it in some plastic? Also do you think there is a way to shield this electronic component from engine heat, like some type of shroud? i am guessing heat is the main reason this part fails. thanks for excellent videos.
Hi Robert, On my volvo V70 97 the ABS always had a strange behavior : even when normally braking, the ABS activites between 5 and 10 mph, not below and not over these speeds. The module is repaired and speedometer + odometer work fine, the pump obviously works fine. So what could cause that judder of the pedal and groaning when the ABS activates for no good reason?
@@RobertDIY Hi Robert! My s70 -97 does the same thing, but below 40km/h, and when we ran a computer through it, it said (word by word) "422 outlet valve LR". Would you perhaps know more specifically where the issue may lie and what I could do about it? Thanks in advance!
Hi Robert, I love my 1998 c70 2.3. Thanks to your video , I got the abs out. Maybe a of topic question. I moved the air intake hose and by mistake remove the little white pipe with the knee rubber on top of the intake hose. I con't find back where it goes and can't find any good pictures of it. Do you know where this thin white hose goes ?
@@RobertDIY After a long search I figured out where the little white pipe from the air intake connects. A tiny metal tube runs, from near the intake behind the block towards the first (right side car , low) fuel pressure regulator vacuum part.
Hey Robert, I’ve just recently become the happy owner of a 1996 850R but it’s not without its work needing to be done! One of the things is the ABS pump assembly itself needs to be replaced (no speedometer/TRACS/ABS). Unfortunately, I can’t find anything online about the process of actually replacing that full assembly (not just the module). Would you be able to help with that? I understand it’ll involve bleeding the brakes and it’s a bigger job than I’m used to, but confident I can do it.
@@RobertDIY the previous owner believes it’s the pump itself, the wiring that goes into the pump is frayed and he thinks that the wires are shorting out/have shorted out in the past. I mentioned replacing the module but he didn’t believe that would fix it. I managed to find a well priced pump assembly on eBay that has a return policy as well so I figured I’d go for it !
@@RobertDIY the whole process I’m a bit unsure about. I imagine it would go 1. Bleed all the brake lines 2. Unscrew the brake lines to the pump 3. Detach any other screws/mounts holding the pump into the car 4. Remove the old pump assembly 5. Insert the new assembly in the same but reverse order? Bleeding the lines I’m unsure about, and anything that I can’t see that might be holding it into the car.
Hey Robert , The unit above the one you pulled out that has the hydrolic lines in it is bad on my 96 850 N/A. does Midwest rebuild these also. What is that part called anyway ?? I am getting no fluid to the rear breaks and only about 50% to the fronts.
@@RobertDIY There is a relay for it somewhere yes. However I guess it's more likely that I have a faulty module. I changed out all the abs-sensors and the abs cogwheel in the front two years ago, so I assume it's not that's why the abs lamp is lit this time.
Hi Robert, Had my module replaced on my V70, speedometer and odometer came back, and my ODB2 scanner can't find any fault code anymore. But to my great surprise I still have the ABS activated for no reason, generally at low speed in an erratic way, without even touching the brake pedal ! Could it be the sensor or the reluctor ring ?
@@RobertDIY actually I bought an iCarsoft i906 new version special for Volvo and Saab. Before the ABS module was changed it showed many error codes related to the ABS. I cleared the codes before I made a test drive, and as the strange behavior of the ABS was still there, I expected to find more or less the same codes show up again (sensors, pump, etc..). It turns out that NO fault codes where identified.
Hi Robert, thanks for making your awesome videos. They are VERY helpful. I have a 96 850R and the ABS and Tracs light came on last week, and they are staying on. The speedometer and odometer are working fine. Before replacing the module, is there anything else I can check that may be causing the lights to come on?
Ive replaced the module from midwest abs. The spedomiter works good but my abs and tracs lights are still on. What did I do wrong? I have a 97 850 t5. Great vid Robert!
hi Robert, >My ABS and tracs lights are on about 50% of the time. I some times get a chattering from the front right wheel when driving in a straight line... thoughts ... do you think it was the ABS module?
Hi Robert (a.k.a Mr. Volvo), I have a 1998 s70 t5 manual that had the ABS/ TRAC lights on for years. When the speedometer dropped out I finally broke down and had Midwest fix the ABS module. Put it on and that solved all the issues. However, the CEL immediately came on with a plethora of codes including 521 / 522 / 212 / 153 / 242 / 541 / 616 / 447 and sometimes even a few others. If you clear them they come back immediately. Also, suddenly the AC is not working, power doesn't seem to be going from ECM to AC relay. This makes me think this might be an ECM problem. Meanwhile the car seems to be running fine. Took the repaired ABS module back off to see what would happen - the plethora of codes is still there. Have you ever run into to something like this? Could I have somehow done something to the ECM by taking the ABS module off and having it repaired? Thanks for any suggestions!
Hi! After taking the bigger plug out (the one with the lid) and spraying some contactspray, my tracs light went off, but abs light still stays on and now my speedometer doesnt work. Could it be just a plug failure because i noticed the tabs were kinda fucked up. I managed to get the plug back in and it seems tight, but i had a working speedometer before i took it apart...

Hi Robert. I changed the module and the rearsensor. Still symptoms. The ABS is starting to pump for a while, than it is normal again, or it is going on error. Another reason could be the ignition switch. Do you know anything about that?
No, what kind of car do you have and what are the codes?
@@RobertDIY Ups. Sorry. V70 1997 2.4T AWD right rearsensor.
Code ABS 214 ABS 314

YOU THE MAN ROB
thanks
Will the abs and track light come on if the driveshaft to the rear wheels is removed on a 1998 v70 xc awd?
If you try to drive with one off.
@@RobertDIY previous owner removed the shaft and I would have to buy a new one to replace it. I was not sure if this was the cause of the lights coming on or not.
Bad ABS module.
There are no rebuild services in my country, will a module from a C70 work? Might try my luck with a wrecked one
If the part number is the same.
Is this the same for an s70 t5?
Yes
How do you bleed the ABS? I have a '94 850 wagon.
huh? I have no idea. I do bleed the brakes.
Well, I don't think I can help. I don't even know what kind of car you have???
Hi Robert,
thank you for the great content! Is there any possibility that a Volvo 850 from 1996 accelerates just very slowly (feels like the engine makes no power) because of a defactive ABS / Trac module? The ABS and TRAC lights are on.
Probably not

@@RobertDIY Thank you for your Help, Robert!
Hi Robert,
Thanks for this video Robert. Thanks to you I was able to identify the module on my 1998 volvo v70. I’m waiting for a new module because I changed the sensors but I still have the dash light on?
Usually the module.
@@RobertDIY thanks you
Repairing the module is easier than removing the connector. I used an anglegrinder and a drill to open it and i just soddered all the contact points possible and glued it back with tec7. You dont need to remove the airbox or anything. Easier than timing belt even if you've never soldered before!
Interesting.
@@RobertDIY im serious. I held of doing this for so long, but i was shocked how easy it was. ABS functions as intended.
Hi Robert, ABS unit on my 1996 850R leaks fluid badly everytime I hit the break. Just wondering if all P80 cars use the same ABS units and have same power connector.. thank you for your great videos
ua-cam.com/video/Qvveywp-JOc/v-deo.html
Your car likely has tracks. You'll need a tracks unit car from '96-'98.
How old is the module? Did you damage the wire to that sensor?
@RobertDIY module is most likely factory. I will need to remove the sensor to inspect further. Although I do hear a sound just before the lights show up.
Thanks Robert🙏🏼 Could you tell me A ball park figure of A fair price for this work? Thanks
Cost estimates are in the description.
Protect it from what?
sure, you can wrap it in anything you'd like. Not my car.
Sure you can create a way to shield parts.
bad guess.
@@RobertDIY oh my bad. Why does this unit fail so often?
Hi Robert,
On my volvo V70 97 the ABS always had a strange behavior : even when normally braking, the ABS activites between 5 and 10 mph, not below and not over these speeds.
The module is repaired and speedometer + odometer work fine, the pump obviously works fine. So what could cause that judder of the pedal and groaning when the ABS activates for no good reason?
Have you scanned the system for codes?
@@RobertDIY yes, and with a scanner for volvos recognizing the type and model year: not a single error code, nothing !
If it doesn't have codes I have no idea.
Late answer, I had the same problem on my 98 AWD. It was the ABS rings
Do you know where this thin white hose goes ?
ua-cam.com/video/dUDSgUsSwmU/v-deo.html
@@RobertDIY Thanks ! You're my Volvo hero
@@RobertDIY After a long search I figured out where the little white pipe from the air intake connects. A tiny metal tube runs, from near the intake behind the block towards the first (right side car , low) fuel pressure regulator vacuum part.
Thank you for this video!
You are welcome
Hey Robert, I’ve just recently become the happy owner of a 1996 850R but it’s not without its work needing to be done! One of the things is the ABS pump assembly itself needs to be replaced (no speedometer/TRACS/ABS). Unfortunately, I can’t find anything online about the process of actually replacing that full assembly (not just the module).
Would you be able to help with that? I understand it’ll involve bleeding the brakes and it’s a bigger job than I’m used to, but confident I can do it.
Sure, how can I help you with that? I've done it a time or two.
Why do you think the pump assembly is bad?
@@RobertDIY hey Robert, do you have any update on tips for this job? Egon
Hey Robert , The unit above the one you pulled out that has the hydrolic lines in it is bad on my 96 850 N/A. does Midwest rebuild these also. What is that part called anyway ?? I am getting no fluid to the rear breaks and only about 50% to the fronts.
That would be a question for them. ABS controller.
I have a similar issue, no pressure at the back wheels, my front abs is working anf I don't have any lights on for abs/tracks.
I think I'll try to replce the ABS relay before this. Thanks.
Relay?
@@RobertDIY There is a relay for it somewhere yes. However I guess it's more likely that I have a faulty module. I changed out all the abs-sensors and the abs cogwheel in the front two years ago, so I assume it's not that's why the abs lamp is lit this time.
ok
Hi Robert,
Had my module replaced on my V70, speedometer and odometer came back, and my ODB2 scanner can't find any fault code anymore. But to my great surprise I still have the ABS activated for no reason, generally at low speed in an erratic way, without even touching the brake pedal !
Could it be the sensor or the reluctor ring ?

ua-cam.com/video/r7BRGvltmHA/v-deo.html
I can start guessing... You need to get it scanned with a reader that can reach the codes.
Hey Robert is Mid-West still the go to provider for these units? Do you know if they are on eBay?
Yes
No
Very helpful thank you
you are welcome.
Hi Robert, thanks for making your awesome videos. They are VERY helpful. I have a 96 850R and the ABS and Tracs light came on last week, and they are staying on. The speedometer and odometer are working fine. Before replacing the module, is there anything else I can check that may be causing the lights to come on?
sure, have you scanned the system for the ABS code?
@@RobertDIY No, not yet. I suppose I can go to AutoZone and have them scan it. I won't get to it until tomorrow though.
Solid advice!!
Thanks
Very helpful 🙏👌
thanks for watching.
Ive replaced the module from midwest abs. The spedomiter works good but my abs and tracs lights are still on. What did I do wrong? I have a 97 850 t5. Great vid Robert!
Probably have another issue. You should have the car scanned with a level 2 OBD2 tool.
@@RobertDIY thank you.
hi Robert,
>My ABS and tracs lights are on about 50% of the time. I some times get a chattering from the front right wheel when driving in a straight line... thoughts ... do you think it was the ABS module?
yes
What is the cost to rebuild the module. ? Approximately. Thanks
Visit their website. The prices are on there.
@@RobertDIY Yes i did , thanks, seems very reasonable. I have to get the socket e5
Hi from the UK, Robert!
I am sorry to ask such a bone question, but do you need to drain the braking system or drain the unit to remove?
Did I do it in the video?
@@RobertDIY
Point taken. I am just making sure as it seemed so simple. I am waiting on an E5 internal 1/4 drive Torx socket as I type.
Thanks for any suggestions!
what are those codes for?
No, the ABS module would not cause any codes.
Hi! After taking the bigger plug out (the one with the lid) and spraying some contactspray, my tracs light went off, but abs light still stays on and now my speedometer doesnt work. Could it be just a plug failure because i noticed the tabs were kinda fucked up. I managed to get the plug back in and it seems tight, but i had a working speedometer before i took it apart...
did you watch the video?
@@RobertDIY Yes i did, I'm basically just asking if the problem with my speedometer could be because of the plug not in the module.
