      Draglesss to invest in it so it can exponentially grow instead of wasting it. $1000 can be turned into 5000 by investing, and $1000 can turn into $0 dollars by buying either monitor.

      kttconnoisseur not really $0 but it could definitely turn into $500 in a few years but then again it depends on what you use those monitors for. If you use them for productivity and for a business then the money is well spent.

    They've cleaned up the X34 in the latest revision and I decided to go with it instead of the Alienware because it was $400cad cheaper in my country. They also increased the curve so now the X34 has the same curve as the alienware, no glossy plastic, etc. Quite happy with it. Running at 120hz with no issues.

    Excellent and very thorough review!
    I've had this monitor since late November (2017) and I love it. Gaming on it with a 1080 Ti is awesome. Mine doesn't have much backlight bleed or a single dead pixel, but the IPS glow is somewhat noticeable in the darkest scenes. It's a trade-off that I'm willing to make. The build quality of this thing- especially the stand- is very impressive. Even the box and packaging were impressive.
    Also, I don't know about Acer or Asus' policies, but for the duration of the 3 year warranty, if Dell can't fix a problem over the phone (aka user error) they ship out a replacement the next business day. Then you put your old one in the same box that the replacement came in, slap on the prepaid shipping label they include, and send it away. Best exchange policy ever, and I doubt anyone else does that.
    I'm sold on IPS panels for the colors and the viewing angles, which trumps black levels for me. Sure, I'd like the best of all worlds, but this was the closest I could get right now. I just tend to keep my brightness set pretty low (around "20"). My computer room is fairly dark.
    Finally, the good news (or bad news if you're in Australia) is that it goes on sale from time to time in America for $999 USD with free overnight shipping directly from Dell. Plus, they gave me a $60 credit to spend on their site, which I used to get an external 1 TB HDD. So I actually paid $940. This makes it cheaper than both the "older" but current offerings from Asus and Acer, and the horribly overpriced HP Omen with a crappy 1 year warranty.
    I thought about waiting for the whole HDR, Quantum Dot type stuff, but who knows if they may have their own issues? And seriously- if you think you're going to get 200 fps on most games at this resolution, you'd better be running SLI 1080 Ti's, and playing a game that actually supports SLI and scales well, too. This type of monitor is for people who want the best eye candy first, high fps second. Competitive online gamers should probably stick to 1080p for a few more years until GPU's catch up.

    I prefer the design of the X34A but the Alienware is a clear winner.
    However, it is not worth the premium upgrade from a X34A.

      Exactly.. I don't think I'd pay the hefty premium for Alienware model, unless I was able to find it at the same 1k price level I can find Acer's X34 in EU.. If it costs around 1300euro then simply it is way overpriced.

      Acer x35 is like $2,500 + tax. Alienware is going to drop some more in price once the 3420 version ($~1,500) drops in the next month or two if websites are correct.
      I’m most likely going to be picking up the AW3418 at that point and using it for 3-5 years until tech improves more and prices are lowered. I think paying 2-3x the price is nuts.

    Had the Alienware for 5 days now and coming from the x34 ,the Alienware is a clear winner.
    Perhaps does not look as good out of the box,however after tweaking it is better than the x34.
    The 20Hz is not night and day but it is definitely noticeable and very welcome and no back light bleed on my panel compared to the x34.It seems dells quality control is superior to other manufacturers as i have had 3 dell 30" monitors that were all great.
    If there was anything to nitpick and one area the x34 beat it ,is its contrast ratio.
    You can also negotiate with dell on price,i managed $1799AU ,you could do better,i have read $1750.
    I think this is the one to beat for awhile as those new panels that are coming are VA type and do not seem to keep up with pixel rise and show some ghosting.The Alienware does not suffer from this

    When I spoke to first person he said he could do $1,889 AUD. I quoted the $1,680 I've read from someone else online. He said no.
    I then exited online chat and spoke to another person @Dell. Said the same thing and copied the link showing special Dell had at Xmas of $1,680 and the lady said can do $1,785.
    Still a lot but it will be with me for a number of years. Will arrive in 5-6 business days.

Then I phoned them up on the 8th to confirm and they said "Oh sorry, there is no stock for another couple of months"!!! I was quite grumpy at the person needless to say. I had been chatting online a couple of times with them, confirming dates and prices etc, and all was confirmed.

    The first 2 Alienware 34" monitors I received had issues and I sent them back. Both of these 2 monitors had Rev A00 hardware with the 2nd monitor manufactured September 2017. My 3rd monitor has no issues thus far, and it has Rev A01 hardware and was manufactured November 2017. So far so good, and I'm hoping the third time's the charm.
    I know about the 200Hz monitors coming out, but even with my GTX1080 Ti SLI setup, I'd have a real tough time getting 200Hz at Ultra settings. Where as now I have Ultra settings on and no issues playing at 120Hz. And this panel is perfect with almost 0 backlight bleed.

I decided to go for it and have not been disappointed. It does take up a bit of landscape on your desk so make sure the desk/table is deep enough so you can sit back and enjoy instead of having it straight up in your face. I did notice while testing/playing games that there is a blur when using the fastest response settings, so play around with the settings until you find what you like. I couldn't get passed the little blur but found the perfect settings in a slower response time setting. I would recommend!

    VA > IPS for me, I'm still using an older sPVA monitor because of the high static contrast and deep blacks compared to IPS.

    • @simonp6805
      @simonp6805 6 років тому +8

      Yeah, I was accustomed to the IPS panel of my Acer Predator XB271HU, and I was extremely surprised by the VA panel of the TCL 4K HDR TV I bought recently... Even with non-HDR content, the increased contrast of the VA panel makes all the difference in the world. The deeper blacks make every color pop more on the VA panel, the image is deeper than the IPS one. For high refresh rate HDR gaming monitors, VA panels will be better than IPS ones in the near future IMO, at least until OLED displays are up to the task.

    • @bmxant
      @bmxant 6 років тому +2

      VA would be fine if it didn't suck for anything more than a slow paced casual game. The Z35 is a good example of how bad the response times are on a VA panel, hitting upwards of 60ms with an average of 16ms.

    • @thebadburrito1394
      @thebadburrito1394 6 років тому +4

      You're bringing up an AOU VA panel though. Those have the ghosting issues...as a QC problem. Strangely, not all monitors are as bad...but it's still an issue. The Samsung VA panels and VA panels used on TVs now are surprisingly better. It's kind of crazy.
      The new ultrawides coming out next year are apparently using IPS or VA (depending on what your looking at) panels that can do low enough to fulfill the HDR certification. I'm sort of doubting that though, but I hope I get pleasantly surprised. The 4K/144hz monitors are definitely using IPS panels, which is a bizarre choice.

      These are 1440p monitors pushing over 5 million pixels which is 2.5 times a 1080p monitor. Not everyone has high end cards to push that high of a frame rate at this resolution. Unless you have a 2080 ti (looking at steam almost everyone owns a 1080p monitor and a 1060 or 1660 Ti) or higher it's useless to have a 200Hz monitor at that resolution as no one will buy it and won't have the card to push it. I personally have a 1080 Ti and would be happy with a 120 Hz monitor at 1440p as 4k is useless right now since no card can push 90 fps at 4k.

    I think I'm gonna upgrade my TV to an OLED since it's not a good time to upgrade to an ultrawide 34-35inch monitor atm..I will enjoy the glorious OLED panel even at the "mere" 60Hz with 4k/HDR glory.. ;)
    These monitors are out on the market for a significant time, they will be replaced pretty soon and still no signs of price drop.And they got no HDR.. I think they are not a good value even for hardcore pc gamers atm.. Next year I'll weigh my options, either get one of those 3 monitors for less or get one of the new VA panels if they are "reasonably" priced.

    • @bitmau5
      @bitmau5 6 років тому +1

      You won't regret the OLED HDR, I have one and it's 65" at that. Working from 8 feet away on a couch isn't fun and gaming at 60 frames is great for the types of games I play. It's quite the experience. Although I do want an Ultrawide for my desk eventually.
      The HDR spec for monitors isn't near as ready and true HDR on televisions is far superior. There is a difference and your right to point that out so kudos to you for knowing the difference, not many people do. That said, I do want a 1440 Ultrawide for video editing and gaming at a desk. 1440 is about as close to 4k as I'm going to get with an Ultrawide and that's fine for my purposes. Finding one that meets both high monitor standards"and" high television standards is challenging but well worth it, if one can afford it.
      When you're shooting in 4k and want to edit footage and when you want to play games on one, singular monitor, the choices are limited and frankly, as you said, we're not there yet. Close, but not quite yet.

    I am also holding off (currently have a 144Hz 1440p TN Panel) not for the 200hz would even be happy with 144hz but you also get HDR support which will mature. I usually keep my monitors for quite a few years (i.e. a few gpu generations) so with volta on the horizon will jump on that and one of the new monitors.

    The like is for the "Alien vs Predator" :)
    Anyway, I'm using CF791 3440x1440@100Hz quantum dot VA monitor from samsung.
    It took me few weeks to adjust to the display curvature. Guess I'd be happier with flat panel. So not sure if I'd feel with more aggressive curve on Alienware.
    Anyway, for FPS games there are were few that can tell the difference between 100 and 120 Hz with a naked eye. Also high refresh rate does not provide any advantage in games - just a nicer, more fluid image.

    And there's the X34P with it's 120Hz, sadly not sold officially in my country, will have to decide between X34 or 34DW, but the X34 is selling at around $800 here, on Dell's website

    I bought the X34, it's been an awesome monitor. I can't wait to get the Acer X35 or the Asus SWIFT PG35VQ. I guess we'll have to wait to see them in 2019 it's already October 2018 and no clue when they'll be releasing them. I can't go back to 16x9 monitors.

    Have had my asus pg348q for over a year and this is the best monitor i ever owned. Would not mind 144hz but i will not move away from ips so i will not change until ips can do that.

    I will say that high refresh rate sounds really appealing because when you are running an esports title like the league, overwatch or csgo with very high fps you can still have gsync active and not have to deal with the strange visuals you get with above refresh rate fps.

    Great job on this one. That AW is the one to beat.
    What determines how good those upcoming 200hz ultrawides will be is how they are with ghosting. Ghosting is what kills it for me with VA panels.

    In terms of design and pure visual appeal, the Alienware takes the crown, the queen, the country and a mistress on the side... there's simply no monitor out there right now that can compete with that sleek, elegant and high end look... and that's coming from someone regarding the Alienware complete rigs as a right old waste of money, so I'm definitely not an AW fanboy by any standard.
    I am a huge fan of this screen however, and Amazon Germany offers it as a preorder (it isn't currently available, due to the high demand) for 999 €, which is a damn good price for a monitor of this size and quality.
    Thanks for the excellent two videos showcasing the AW and comparing it to one of its most direct competitors, very informative and visually pleasing work!

    This monitor currently has a 40% discount on Newegg (17th Nov 2018). It's a steal at this price and for anyone who is in the market for an ultrawide I'm not sure you could do much better.

    Saw the alienware few days ago in a local hw shop, looked nice running the last assasins creed with g-sync on 1080ti
    I have the 1st gen 3440x1440 from Samsung (VA panel) and looking forward to some upgrade. But I am thinking more about 38" 3840x1600 @ 100+ Hz when they arrive. Just the high refresh rate is not enough to justify the upgrade cost. And I feel I could use a bit more space for my productivity work. Two browsers side by side on the 3440 are a bit cramped.
    Still waiting for the 2080 to come out to upgrade my 970s and 2700k.

    My 1080ti tops out at a consistent 80-100hz, low quality settings, at 3440. Got a used x34 cheap. I'm going to run with my current setup for at least 2 more GPU generations. If game builds in the future keep being released in a state that make a 3-4 gen GPU upgrade cycle the way to go then throwing $ at hardware is pointless for minimal gains.

    The upcoming 3440x1440 200Hz is VA panel which have terrible response time , ghosting and ugly overdrive. IPS is the best balance between response time , ghosting and corona (inverse ghosting). Sadly no 3440x1440 feature blur reduction. The AW3418 come close at 120Hz. which should be default rather than overclock. Then put ULMB @ 100Hz to it would be perfect. (ULMB can't set for highest refresh rate). But it come at default 100Hz still should be able to put ULMB @ 85Hz as option.

    Great vid very thorough. I own the X34 personally and I thought about upgrading to the newer 200 hz versions maybe in the future but then I heard you say they wouldn't be IPS and I was kinda shocked. That's a big step backward in my opinion because I do video and photo editing on my X34 as well as gaming. Guess I am keeping this thing a lot longer than I thought

    I have the Acer Z35P which is perfect for me. Looks great, no backlight bleed and 120hz refresh rate. It might not be IPS but I can live without that.

    I bought the Alienware AW3418DW on Black Friday for $1000 US and it is simply amazing. I mostly use it for gaming and it is impressive. The panel is rated at 100hz but you can overclock to 120hz. This is very easy to do. If you have the cash buy it! I am powering this with a ASUS ROG 1080 GPU and get frame rates on modern games at high to Ultra high of 80-120FPS depending on the game. Newer games run better.
