whenever I watch these "which one is for you" videos I wind up more confused than before
Tell me about it.
Go with the ultra wide
why not both
@@rayweller3704 Yeeeeeh!
😂
Dimitri... everytime I watch one of your videos I can't stop smiling at how damn good the video quality is. From the audio to colour correction to shot perspectives its just utterly enjoyable. Keep up the great work my man!
+Kyle Hartzenberg happy to hear :)
I agree. More youtubers need to consider cinematography.
This is the hardest life altering decision I ever have to make.
I'd hardly call 1080p (roughly 7 years ago) "ancient"
it's more than 7 years at this point.. they started coming out in like 2008. 9-10 years is approaching a decade. Which would be ancient..
you make me fell in vanguard all the time since 2005... i got my 1080 in 2009 and got my ultra wide in 203 or 2014 i really don't remember correctly... but i feel i get some monitor vanguard stuffs xD
I wouldn't call it ancient ether because it's newer than the Xbox 360 and yet that's old but no body ever calls that ancient with one exception (the rich boy that's gets every thing before it releases)😂😂😂
1080p 144hz
Ez
Your video is so white I paused it and used it to clean out the dusty spots on my monitor
😂😂
Andrew Tin tell me abt it. I'm watching this at 3 am, my roommate just woke up to tell me turn off the lights.
Lmao
thats so funny but still dont understand what you guys are talking about
ohhh
so i can say that my monitor is ok
thank you
I still like my 17" CRT monitor... plus it keeps my room warm as it puts out so much heat. lol
My head says go 4k, my heart says go 21:9.
My wallet says go fuck yourself :'(
Go for 21:9.
Your eyes will enjoy it more.
@@craftedinddd BRO! 😂
@@campelodemagalhaes 4k is a lot more enjoyable for the eyes but it's really hard to run in games and scaling is not as easy for windows as it should be to use it quite fluid. Even a RTX 2080 Super is not able to run games from 2018 on more than 60 fps.
i bought both. lived with only 4k 27" ips for 4 years, its really great. one minus - 60 hz. just for new impressions im getting xiaomi 34 3500\1440 VA. its super cheap, 400 usd, cheaper than my 4k (550 usd or so).
Thank you. This was very helpful for me.
I ended up switching from an ASUS 1440p 34" ultra wide to an LG 2160p 32 inch and haven't looked back. My use case is mostly work (no video editing, I mostly monitor a very large network) and very mild gaming. Some of my more intense games I run at 1440p and the loss is nominal. It usually is used for content consumption which it does without breaking a sweat.
I have the 29" LG ultrawide and it's amazing for multitasking. As for black bars, if media doesn't support the 21:9 aspect I'll just keep it windowed and the rest of the real estate might as well be a second monitor since the video is definitely large enough for me and there's plenty of space left
Yeah that's what i started doing as well! Productivity boost while watching movies :OOO
As a video editor my 34" LG is an essential component to that. I could not live without now.
jup going for an ultrawide monitor was the best tech decision i made in a while. simply loving it :D
me to and I personally love it
i just went for 3 24 inch monitors...
please start making your videos in 21:9 as a 21:9 UHD monitor owner
Definitely. I love coming across 21:9 content. looks amazing on my ultrawide
the audience is not large enough to make it worth
Tell that to the movie industry
get a 4k as wide as the 21 by 9
UA-cam doesn't support 21/9 unfortunately, you'll have the black bars on all 4 side of the screen :/
You don't need a flat monitor to do 3D.. your not supposed to draw lines in a perspective view ( only top, or side)
Good luck with ghat
🤣🤣🤣what!?
What about shift?
Excellent review! It answers pretty much all our questions. Thx!
I love my Ultrawide monitor.
What don't you like about it?
I love my oled 4k display.
What type do you have?
what display is it?
I love my 360p HD CRT.
I went with the 34" LG 21:9 ultra wide screen, and on some game you can expand your field of view giving you an advantage. Love this thing!
21:9 for sure. love it so much. I found 4k resolution a bit useless as lots of applications don't have a nice way to scale the UI for it so things were too small
For actual every day use, ultra wide. Even for video or photo editing. For porn, 4k.
If your fetish is the root of the hair, for example.
nenadcvele Or the hair on the girls foot.
for actual everyday use: 3:2 or 4:3(around 5k resolution, of course).
for videogames: ultrawide
What if my every day use is porn? Hmmm
vr
21:9 in 4k at 144hz. Zero compromises
ikr
21:9 would need ~8k to have the same pixel density as a normal 4k screen
No.
You're incorrect.
ultrawide 3440x1440p isn't that far away from 4k. even tho these 25% less pixels do make gaming playable and anyway a lot more enjoyable @21:9
you'd need something like 4500 x 1850 to get the same pixel count as 4k but that is not going to happen
the next step would be 5120 x 2160p uw
our technology cant run 4k on over 60hz
An UltraWide man am I.
4k lad Is I
good man only the best gaming platforms support 16:9 :)
is I am for the 2
I've got a 50 inch 4k, 29 inch ultrawide, and CRT all hooked up at once
Ultrawide is pog
Best video I've seen so far on this topic. Thanks!
When you were talking about the white back of the UHD panel, it made me think of something, if you have a backlit /RGB keyboard and other peripherals, get a table with a reflective surface cause the lights look really stunning reflecting on the desk! My setup is white and my keyboard is a Ducky one YOTG, but I also have a Cougar KB/mouse combo with RGB it's just gorgeous
I love ultrawides
Same here
What I really like about Ultrawides is that it's fit for a guy who does productivity. Like me. Plz I don't want to mind the black lines when I play as standard resolutions like 2560x1440 or 4K. Plus, I'd prefer an LG Ultrawide, but they are so expensive if you want 3440x1440, although 2560x1080 is a sweet spot for me since it's cheaper, I want less screen tearing and stuff like that. Conveniently, I won't list my other reasons because I have a LOT.
I honestly want one very badly but unfortuantely for a good one it is about $600- 700 at least 34 inches, way out of my budget but the games i play could so benefit from an ultrawide.
Yeah my girlfriend prefers ultrawides to ultralongs.
same with my girl, i picked her up in a shoe store when she heard me ask for 4 E width sneakers.
After comparing 21:9 and 4K monitors, I went with the 21:9 34" Asus PG348Q for several reasons:
First, the PG348Q offers 100 Hz refresh rates and G-Sync for gaming.
Second, 3440x1440 is a lot less pixels for the graphics card to push, so you get a higher refresh rate.
Third, even the GTX 1080 can't get maintain a minimum of 60 FPS in most newer games at 4K, however the GTX 1080 and other GPUs can can manage over 60 FPS in most newer games at 3440x1440.
Fourth, the 34" curved monitor is an amazing gaming experience. You get better immersion in the games.
Fifth, the current 4K monitors can't do over 60 Hz even if you include the adaptive refresh rate monitors(unless you count thee Dell OLED monitor that cost several thousand dollars). When faster GPUs come out, I'll be limited to 60 Hz at 4K if I were to buy a 4K monitor now.
Sixth, most newer movies are 21:9 and look amazing on the 21:9 monitor. You don't get the black bars at the top and bottom.
Seventh, at 30-34", the distance the screen is away form my eyes on my desk, both the 4K and 3440x1440 monitor have a pixel pitch that's smaller than what I, and most other people, can see at that distance. So, going with 4K really doesn't offer a huge improvement in detail for me at that distance.
SOLD!
A watercooled 1080Ti is fine for 4K. :)
yah and in SLI even better
No, a watercooled 1080Ti is not enough to drive games in ultra at high framerates in 4k. I own a 1080Ti with a 3440x1440@100Hz Monitor. This Graphics card is not powerful enough for that res either.
im not sure about garenteed performance out of the box this may be just a case in overclocking but, maybe you lost the silicone lottery?
That's a good point when it comes to straight lines. I'm in love with these 21:9 monitors and really want one, but I'm a gamer who spends more time in Premiere and After Effects than any game out there. I wonder if that curve will also bother me. That being said, I've watched a few monitor reviews from tech channels, and you're the only one who raised that issue. Other channels tend to give glowing reviews when it comes to editing. Especially with the huge timeline space (a major selling point for me).
I think the issue with the straight lines is more a deal in graphic design than in video editing.
Great review. Snappy and in-depth.
+HardwareCanucks where did u get those wallpapers
Nice review, I bought a few months ago the Acer B286HK, a 4K monitor, but now I'm testing the DELL UltraSharp U3415W. Both are amazing monitors, but as a developer, I feel that this ultra wide has more space for me to work. I can split the screen into 3 spaces and work more comfortable than on the 28".
After one week using this ultra wide I'm thinking to sell my UHD monitor and buy this ultra wide, but let me test it for one more week :P
Thanks this is a super helpful review. I'm particularly grateful that you cover so many usage scenarios.
Great review.
What about the typography on the LG 4k? Is it comparable if not similar to the imac 5k?
21:9 is the future!
3:2 is the future. wider is the wrong way to go, taller is much better for productive tasks
lusteraliaszero Yuck.. who wants to be productive in this world... Just to earn money. Gaming/ Movies/ Editing... better in 21:9
Not everyone can just sit and play video games all day.
also, more productive = better games getting produced
And no, editing isn't better in 21:9
Actually, even your physical prerequisites show that width is better than height. If you move your head all day up and down you'll get health problems. It is much more comfortable spinning your head to the left or right.
Furthermore you can't say that it is better for productivity in general. Actually it's just good for programming and some IT guys that don't write scripts even prefer a wider setting. Btw: IT guys buy 16:19 or 21:9 monitors and turn them 90°. No one uses 3:2 that's just bs.
And you clearly haven't edited anything yet. It's not like people buy 21:9 monitors ONLY for editing...no...that never happens... you dig?
You're totally wrong were. first of all, The range within which your eye can truly focus is perfectly circular, IE, your eye focuses at a 1:1 aspect. It is also better at a adapting up and down without moving your head than left and right, it's a total nonissue, your head won't move at all, just your eyes. And your eyes will also strain less moving up and down than side to side.
There's a reason every pure text format, like books, are always taller than wide. It's not going to make people nod excessively.
The surface studio is 3:2. The macbooks are also taller, the chromebook, etc. Generally the premium devices marketed at designers are taller.
Widescreen for video editing is bad, you want to display the video at its actual aspect ratio (wide is truly good for videos, because it's advantageous for the eye not to perceive EVERYTHING on the screen perfectly, this is more immersive) while still having space for your tools.
Widescreen for drawing is terrible, you want as much real estate as possible, without traveling too much, taller is more ergonomic. curved ultrawide is obviously as bad as it gets unless you're producing niche products
Turning a widescreen on its side is just another extreme too far in one direction. It would be good for a very limited selection of things, like dedicating it for programming, but this is absolutely a compromise brought on by the current market. Thankfully taller screens are making a return
love my 34inch curved LG ultrawide. woudnt wanna go back to 16:9
As for curved lines. i havent had any issues with such a thing, and im a professional 3d artist and I use this curved ultrawide monitor as my work and gaming monitor. The curve is barely even noticeable.
I've heard some people say the exact opposite which brings me to a conclusion, it really depends on personal preference. The trouble is, I like both but watching 16:9 on ultrawide is pretty annoying, not gonna lie. Watching 21:9 on 16:9 however, is not so bad because everyone's used to seeing the horizontal black bars.
Fantastic review - great job!
Thanks for the knowledge. I'll definitely go for the utra wide. But what do you think it's a best display for both content creation and architecture stuffs?
Easy choice! 1080p 16:9 144Hz !
Yes
thats what im rocking
affordable 144hz panels are a joke because you're paying for a TN panel. A quality 144hz panel with a proper IPS display costs as much as one of these options. Educate yourself on the products you praise before you say anything.
a better choice would be two monitors a 1080p 144 hz for games that need that high refresh rate and a 4K 60 Hz for other games because both monitors maybe cheaper than a 4K 100 hz if it happens to exist anytime soon
+Ian Benedict Thank you...
world first rich people problem
Uhm, you mean "first world problems"?
hahahah
Uhm, you mean "first world rich people problems"?
Or any world employed people problems.
Edin Jahic If they'll want this kind of stuff.
Coming from a Asus Strix PG279 to an LG 34UC89G I have to say backight bleeding is still an issue if you need >professional< colors. However the 34 inch 21:9 is large enough to compensate some drawbacks of playing 1080p (16:9) content. then you also can attach the monitor with 2 cables so you have real 2 monitors in Windows. the 34 inch compensate the dividing a lot too.
Thanks a million for your comparison, it borought a lot of points to surface for my considerations.
Until LG offers a 120hz + 21:9, Ill save my money.
save your money for a gpu that can run new games 120 fps.minimum on 3440x1440 max settings so ....wait for 5 years good luck.
+Mpamphs Kangourosaurous The new Titan is supposed to be 50% more powerful than the 1080. If so, that should do.
And the 1080ti will launch a couple months after that, so just hold on to your panties.
+Mpamphs Kangourosaurous 1080ti SLI
+James D I have 2 1080s now and even a single 1080 runs my Benq 1440, 144hz pretty good. I get over 100 frames in many games. If Nvidia can get 25% more power out of the Titan or the Ti, then I think ultra wide will be viable.
I would like to see a 21:9 display with 2160p with 75Hz. That would be great for me.
You found it?
Thanks for the structured and well based opinion! It helps me to buy the right product for my needs!
Great video. It was literally exactly what I was looking to have answered for me, as I do digital art work and am considering running my Xbox One X on a 21:9. I had one question, from the video it looked like the two monitors side by side were the same screen height, even though the UHD is 2160 and the UltraWide is 1600. As a person who appreciates a good aesthetic, are they the same height or are they really close?
I'd go with 21:9, I wouldn't have to use 2 seperate monitors so I won't have a bezel in the way. 4k is cool and all but I'd much rather have a curved 21:9 screen.
Exactly, that's the biggest advantage of having ultrawide. Anyone who says "ultrawide is too big. I prefer 2 monitors" literally makes no sense because your eyes are moving the same distance, only you don't have the annoying 2x bezel in the way and your content is all on one screen.
In a triple monitor setup with two portrait monitors flanking my central 32" monitor, I'd have to go standard 16:9 otherwise the portrait monitors would be too far away to be usable.
I miss the old portrait-landscape-portrait with the 30" 2560x1600 monitor flanked by two smaller screens. Both the physical height and the pixels per inch were perfectly matched between the two. If you got the same brand of monitor (Dell, for example) and calibrated them together, the colors would be identical too. It really was fantastic.
Great vid man! It answered a qurstion that has been in my head for weeks. WQHD is going to be for me working in unity needing screen real estate and also gaming with more hz!!
I have like one of the first affordable 4k monitors. It's and Acer B286HK. $500, thick raised bezels, weighs about 20 pounds, but incredibly sturdy and is the most amazingly adjustable monitor I've ever seen. Can tilt left right, up down, very height adjustable, can swivel almost completely around.
Haha i cant afford neither
Lol same here..
"can't neither" is a double negtive, thus you're saying you can....
What you mean is you can't afford either, and I feel you brother.
+Remco Smit why did you change your name to Remco Smit, Mr. Buzz Killington?
CogniVision Wut? Because it's my real name, and I did so when Google made you link Google+ and such... never bothered changing it back (if even possible)
Remco Smit Wow, I hate you even more now.
7:14 can someone please tell me where to download this wallpaper?!
It seems like no one will
Hello what's the height length and width of your desktop...I recently got ultrawide and needs to make nice desk..
I feel like I want BOTH, Ultrawide for gaming and movies and the option of the 4K when you want greater colour and image accuracy.
I always thought black bars on top and bottom just makes videos look more cinematic
21:9 all day. i have both i dont even look at the 4k screen
I like your comment ...all respect
Along with that extra resolution also has to come with an upgrade in GPU along with it, since more pixels requires something faster and smoother under the hood of your rig. So if you're going 4K, don't forget to see if your current GPU can push those extra pixels without all the lag. Heads up.
Right on BRO ! you got a sub from me ! I just bought an Ultrawide for RTS games and mainly esports games like Heroes of the Storm and that extra screenview on the map makes a BIG DIFFERENCE ! Glad to know I made the right choice !

I thought it was just me thinking that lol
Wayward Son you are not alone buddy
The real question is "where can i find a high-salary job so i can buy either one of them?" (I like the 21:9)

Do an honest day work
honestly this is my new favorite youtube channel
Good point on the curvature of a straight line and the scaling issue of UHD.
I pick the 21:9 i don't know why but it attracts me xD xD xD
because it's not mainstream, at least for me. i've never met someone with a monitor like that IRL.
i love my ultra wide
it's immersive
Why not a 4k ultrawide monitor?
doesn't really exist
Yet...
Dell's UltraSharp U3415W is consumer 4K, ultrawide and curved. Amazing monitor, albeit quite expensive.
1440p isn't 4k though
True, true. Bummer. :/
Another option is to grab a 40" 4K monitor. Korean ones on eBay are around the price of the 27". Sadly, the one tier lower version of the LG 31MU isn't available, which is a fantastically accurate monitor that might help you with editing.
Just getting an 21:9 flat panel soon with 34 inch. I am so excited
What was again the name of the "Hack & slash" game you tested? i couldn't understand :( pls reply Dmitri
Victor Vran
thank you
Honestly just waiting for the tech to mature before I go 4k monitor, definitively want/wait for the high refresh rates for gaming at 4k or 5k res. Watching movies is pretty insane experience which is always a bonus.
Thank you. :)
chris pratt
I’m gonna get both for my editing, ultra wide to edit and the 4K to preview the footage and for playback with editing
Thanks for that. Now I need to get an UHD monitor.
But I like having both my kidneys... I'm gonna have to wait for AMD to bring GPU prices down before either one of these is viable.
why no aib gtx 1070 review ?
Thanks for the insights!
I like the way your monitors are mounted on your desk, can you please tell me what kind that is? love your video thank you
Ultrawide for sure. 4k vs. 1440p is hard to discern a difference from reasonable viewing differences, plus the UW gives you so much more real estate
21:9 any day
QHD is closer to retina display? therefore less strain on the eyes ... so I'd choose QHD.
Thanks for the video. Helped me make up my mind. I am about to buy Samsung u28d590d. Just a little bit confused that it might be LCD and not LED!?
planning on getting both of these as a dual monitor setup. anything that could go wrong if I do this? will scale matching be a problem?
1080p 144hz is still best until ultrawide 144hz 1440p comes out
1440p 144hz has been a thing for quite a long time.
+The Cheshire Cat not ultrawide tho
Captain Asteroid Ah I missed that, whoops. Closest is 100hz IIRC

LinusMLGTips That monitor is $1000 I can buy a 4k tv with that price
Acer Predator X34 IS 21:9 3440x1440 and it has a 100mhz refresh rate.
Yeah but only with G-Sync can you get those hertz
i just got a predator x 34 for my 13th b day !!!!

Hi. Amazing video. Thank you. Does anyone please can advise regarding which one to choose for video editing using FCPX on M1?
how to install the kraken x61
The answer is get both.
I tried both. I went with the 4k for a few reasons.
1 - It was what I was used to having come from a 4k monitor, and trying to get used to the reduced desktop space wasn't happening for me.
2 - I like the larger height of the 32" 4k. Things like word documents, web pages, even Steam were a "chore" to scroll through on the ultrawide.
3 - 4k is just awesome in terms of picture quality.
I just ordered a 21:9 monitor and the decision wasn't particularly tough. I don't have to deal with the weird windows scaling, I get more effective real estate (used to working with dual monitors at work, so now I feel like I need something similar at home), and I love the curve. I don't do any photo or video editing, so the distortion is a non-factor. Not to mention that I actually have a chance of being able to run games at decent settings and native resolution while maintaining a good frame rate.
I wonder if you can disable the charging if you have a 100w MacBook and wanna use the original charger
What about ultrawide 4k?
Es muy difícil usar el 4k en un monitor tan grande.
21:9 hands down.
Please answer, if 34" Ultrawide plays 16:9 video with black bar. Will it about same size as 27" wide play full screen .. or the video actually smaller than 27" ?
Hi. thanks for your great video. In my case, I need a monitor to work in word, pdf and excel. Do you think it is better to have 2 or 3 monitors instead of one extra wide? Does the extrawide work well (i am thinking in 49 inch samsung) to work with these types of programs? Or would you prefer two or more monitors instead of one for that type of work? Thank you very much!!!
I've had my 34" LG 34UM67 Ultrawide 2560x1080 monitor for a year now. Never going back to 16:9 monitors. Racing and open world games look amazing and FPS titles are more immersive. 2560x1080 is NOT much more demanding than standard 1080p so most graphics cards can play high settings at full res. You won't be dissapointed if you go 21:9 ultrawide.
Isn't 34" tooooo damn big for a 1080p res?
no, games looks great at this resolution. I can understand 1440p looks better, but for the money 21:9 1080p monitors are very good.
Ruben Theunis a 21:9 34 inch isnt the same as a 16:9 34” inch so no not really
The screens in 21/9 and 34 inches have a height of 25 "and a large width but curved it is immersive there are screens this year in 3440x1440
I am not worried about 29 "21/9
desktop or gaming to date pixel as he says by ignorant.
I have had a 29-inch 1080p ultrawide and I must tell you that maybe in gaming you don't notice the difference, but to read it does show, you need more clarity, especially for someone like me who watches IDE's and encodes most of the day.
Great video Demitri, I've only recently bought the BenQ GW2765HT and created a full review, however I am starting to consider getting a 21:9 and selling the BenQ. Hmm decisions. I edit a lot for my videos so 21:9 would be good. Not sure I'd get as annoyed about the lines. But I understand exactly what you mean.
+Jack's Gadgets after a while you get used to the curve, but if you can get a flat UltraWide I would.
+HardwareCanucks thanks for the reply, see I would but I've not found any flat 21:9's in the 34" range :(
www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-34UM58-P-ultrawide-monitor
I got the 29" model on Friday, and I'm loving it. Just to clear up one thing. The 75hz refresh rate is recommended on lower settings. But i got mine on Native through Nvidia Controls.
Thanks for the link, although I'd probably want higher res at 29" or more. Especially as I'd be coming from a 2560x1440
Jack's Gadgets Yea, those will be hard to find not curved.
Really professional video. Subscribed!
+Brooks Howell awesome :) welcome!
Recently completed my 4k pc build and bought a 50" UHD tv to use as a monitor and its awesome for everything I do (video editing, gaming, content consumption) although it's not curved.
21:9 for sure...
*Which one would you choose?*
Me: I would choose to have mercy on my wallet
What about for coding/programming? Which one do you guys think would be more comfortable? Also, if I upgrade my CPU but keep my R9 290X Lightning, how do you think it would game on the 1440p ultrawide?
How are connecting your mac in this video ? Do not seems to be a model with usb c
and I'm sitting here waiting for a 4K 21:9 monitor with thunderbolt 2...
Are you still waiting?
@@autumno LG make one now, but you can't buy it anywhere.
An ultrawide monitor with the DPI of a 4k monitor would certainly require an extremely strong graphics card

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. 13 inches. I work from home and want a bigger monitor. Not sure what to get. so much out there. I'm thinking of a 32-inch curved. I'd like to have 3 webpages pulled up at once. Any Advice? Thank You
7:22 I can see at least 5 dead pixels on the left side of the monitor. How did you miss that?
21:9 all the way
7:11 i want so much have a place like this in my home
A desk?
4:41 YOU ALSO HAVE AN O2! I LOVE YOU! :D Seriously though great video, I've been split between these two monitors for a while now. This helped.
What did you choose then (i know i’m 3 years late)
@@Raulxz The true 4K panel all day long. I actually got the LG Ultrafine 21.5" 4069 x 2304 mac display. It was smaller and higher res/pixel density, good for me being nearsighted and liking to use things from shorter distances away. I also like the glossy panel finish (there are no 4K displays with a glossy finish besides the Mac ones LG makes). It works beautifully with my XPS 15 over thunderbolt, only thing is you have to download a program by a random friendly dev to control brightness on windows.
I just got an ultrawide monitor last week and I gotta say it was the best decision I made in a while. Thank goodness it isn't curved so I can use it for editing without any issues.
