I like that Richard says that he's not using his 4k monitor because of the crappy scaling of Windows. He's right. The moment you scale the desktop so that you can make text and icons readable, it has already negated the real estate advantage of the 4k resolution. Why these manufacturers keep pushing 4k resolution on such small monitors boggles my mind? The only way to make 4k usable is to have a 40+ inch 4k monitor so that you don't need to change the scale on text. But that's so ridiculous staring at a humongous monitor for everyday desktop use. I am so glad these 21:9 monitors were produced. It's the perfect solution.
awesome review. you should do more. your voice doesn't start doing my head in either and your really easy to listen to and talk about everything thats relevant
+Mortien Gerrux Depends on the TV, many high end models will make 1080p look just as good on a 4k tv as it would on a native 1080p tv. I've seen it, have a good day.
Great video, thanks Wichard. As an ultrawide user I couldn't believe Fallout 4 lacked native 21:9 support. Really reduced the gameplay experience for me.
Hugo Olloman Urgh, worst part about the PC community is how they berate the consoles. They aren't going to sway anybody into joining the PC community with that attitude
+Pan Z It's the opposite, Pascal in June announced at computex in Taipei and about a month later will we have Polaris. Also a refresh to skylake called Kabylake is also due at computex. Looking forward to June ! Start piling up dat cash
so can an Nvidia user buy the Xr341ck and still have decent gaming results? Gsync monitors are about a $500 premium over their freesync counterparts right now.... :(
I have yet to get the chance to experience g-sync nor high refresh rate monitors myself. What is making the x34 on the left looking liquid smooth even on a youtube video? I'm very susceptible to stuttering and has been a problem since gaming on a crt monitor days. And fantastic videos sir!
A comparison of input lag, GTG response times, colour accuracy etc would have been nice to but overall a good review. Wish I could afford one of these :(
This video is not even real 21:9 it's 1920x1080 with black bars. I feel cheated. I just got a curved 34" ultrawide and there are only a few vids on youtube that actually fill up my screen when I click fullscreen. But the ones that do are glorious!
+awill891 I have myself ultrawide monitor, and i simply installed "Ultra-wide video' plugin from chrome shop. chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ultrawide-video/lngfncacljheahfpahadgipefkbagpdl? Its great way to watch 21:9 video at fullscreen.
+Mortien Gerrux a regular 5k monitor already goes for 2.5k, if we did get a 5120x2160 at 100hz within the next 2 years don't expect that thing to be any less than 3k when it first launches
Peasant Destroyer according to all the benchmarks I've seen you're straight up wrong, either your fps counter is messed up, or you're just lying, very few games can reach 100fps in 4k on that card, and you won't just find any old 4k monitor with g sync, and they cost a shit ton of money, I'd know cause I paid a premium to get the PG348Q.
Currently the predator is $1200 vs $850 for the XR freesync model. huge price difference. If I have a 1070 gpu, would it be worth it to get the XR34 model?
Wow beautiful monitors. I have a eyefinity setup in portrait mode running at 3240 x 1980 but I'm really thinking of getting one of these. I wonder how well my games would run using a 7970 and FX 8320. I get pretty good FPS (over 30) tweaking around with the settings.
They look awesome but the important thing to me when chosing a monitor is the industry standard and it still is 1080p. Consoles, bluray movies and some TV shows support 1080 as a max resolution, only a few games support 4k (not consoles, of course, and if you own a 4k TV there is no content worth watching) and less support 21:9. It will get there but by then new PC technologies will arrive and we don't know for sure what the new standard will be, it happened when 720p was the standard and 1080p came in, and it will happen again, you will have to stretch everything to watch the content and you will get black bars at the sides on a 21:9 monitor, same happened when moving from 4:3 to 16:10, and then the standard changed again to 16:9, the reason being the influence of HDTVs over PC monitors, which makes me think about the future of wide displays. For the average consumer spending a considerable amount of money in a display that is not going to have a lot of support is not an option, and on top of that you need more money to run games at that resolution. Hardcore PC enthusiasts will get an awesome experience though, I would like to have one of these displays but if I have to chose just one display to do it all I'd stick to a 1080p monitor, for now.
Be careful of Acer's quality though , from what i have been reading in a review the monitor skews towards blue and it can't be rectified. It has inaccurate colour just on this hue but it is a fault that apparently is in every model of the XR341 so it is something to do with either the panel or the software that causes the issue. In any case don't buy it until they rectify it. These monitors are way too expensive to put up with errors.
i'd need a better gfx card before i can even consider it.. and since pascal should be released before i can afford a high end gfx card anyway.. might as well wait. i'd love more of these kinds of videos. informative and sort of a review of the monitors.
I have a AOC ultrawide 2560x1080 with a MSI 970 that is hand OC to over 1500 mhz and love it. Most games I can push the DSR higher. But GTA 5 is the only one I need to make some adjustment on. Mainly turning down that grass to high.
got everything ok apart from "premium grade" they are not backlight bleed and uniformity kills the monitor experience for me, and its a tough call too because 21:9 100hz+ and gsync are amazing
This or a triple monitor setup? I'm really confused... Just returned my Asus Rog Swift (It randomly turned into an artifact) and I will NEVER buy TN again. It's a terrible experience. I have around $700 to spend so I won't be getting this exact model and I may wait a few months for a sale. :) THANKS!
TheVanillatech peasant'? LOL. By the way i'm here because i'm a linus tech tips subscriber, so it is normal for me to see uploaded videos. I have a hi-end PC, but i usually play older games from my childhood as well...don't see anything "Peasant" about it.
TheVanillatech LOL why the hate? If you like arguing with random people on the internet i won't stop you; even though it's one of the saddest things i can think of. Well, gotta fire up my GTX 980, cheers little kid! ;)
The Acer Predator X34 also comes as a Freesync version, even though the internet pretends it doesn't exist (try finding a review). Other than omitting that fact, good review.
It doesn't exist. There is no 100hz Acer freesync monitor. There are two others however. The Microboard M340CLZ is a 100hz 3440x1440 VA FreeSync display, and so i the Samsung CF791.
I'm glad I got my premium hardware now. Real life just kicked in for me, student loans as well as a car note.. Thankfully I have my XB270HU 2560x1440p @ 144hz, on my 980Ti.. So I'm comfortable where I am right now, maybe by 2018 ill upgrade to the next Nvidia architecture and consider 21:9 monitor.. Honestly I agree 4K is to resource heavy to run at demanding frame rates..well anyway happy gaming everyone.
I really want an 21:9 monitor, but I can only afford a 29inch 2560x1080 display because my GPU is only a single GTX 970 which means 4k is outta question. Besides is it even worth it when coming a from a 24 inch 16:9 display? Does Dota 2 or CSGO even support this resolution?
I really want something like this at some point. Being using 4K monitor around 8 months now and I have to say in Windows environment it really sucks. When using the actual resolution the text is so small it's illegible and when you start to scale it bigger then you lose that screen real estate and some (well many of them) applications don't support scaling properly so they suffer from ugly interpolation or they don't support scaling at all and are still illegible. Avoid 4K for Windows use at all costs unless you have the best eyesight ever, if you can read it in its native scaling you are fine.
Damn... these monitors comes very close to being perfect. Many of the existing G-sync/Freesync monitors have abysmal I/O, so even this X34 Predator has better I/O than those. The only small issue is the refresh rate on one. Sure 75Hz is nice on the cheaper XR341CK, but up to 100Hz on the X34 is pretty much perfect. Sure it might be nice to get that 120Hz, but 100Hz is good enough considering the framerate of games at these resolutions. But... the major issue here is of course... the price. These monitors cost more than the graphics card one would use to power them and they aren't very affordable. Thus I'm hoping that AMD's next set of GPUs are a good upgrade from the likes of a GTX970, since FreeSync is cheaper.
+Dylan Sands Yes that's what I'm worried about if that happens ill chick the 4130t back in it again I picked one up as the T model haswell CPUs are nearly obsolete
Please encode your future 21:9 videos in 21:9 aspect ratio and don't try to fit it in 16:9 (with black bars on top and bottom). Yes, there's no difference on a 16:9 screen but on a 21:9 screen i'm getting black bars on every side of the video instead of just naturally scretching to the whole screen like a proper 21:9 video does...
I was gonna get an ultra wide monitor but the thing I didn't like about it was that the height of the monitor was small, it was like two laptop screens next to each other which sucks so I went for a standard monitor.
+Kitty Kat You were probably looking at a 25 inch ultrawide. A 29 inch monitor(like the 29um67p I'm typing this on) is as tall as a 23-23.5 inch 16:9 monitor, and a 34 inch ultrawide(like the ones shown in this video) are about as tall as a 27 inch 16:9 display. 25 inch ultrawides are about as tall as a 21~ inch monitor, and generally aren't worth it just like how a 21 inch 16:9 display isn't worth it at 1080p.
lucario1111 It was a cheaper model, the good ones are just way to expensive so I went with a 16:9 24" 144hz monitor instead, the price for ultra wide just isn't worth it.
I was able to pick up this 29um67p which is a 75 hz freesync 5ms IPS panel for 260 usd. That's definitely not way too expensive. It's about the price of a 1440p 16:9 ips monitor, except I gain freesync and 75 hz.
ACER Predator X34 (Branded "Predator" lineup as TOP OF THE LINE): NVIDIA G-Sync ACER XR341CK No branding, but still backed by great company and features: AMD FreeSync We already know NVIDIA's done it right even Acer knows it.
Keap in mind standards are not made overnight. When it goes to TV's it need to pass years until we get a new standard. Keap in mind people used 4:3 TV for years and years until most people got they 16:9 ones
While 21:9 is great for editing videos I don't think it's that good for general use (websites, office, programming etc) where you can really made something out of those extra vertical pixels. You can make the argument that you can multitask better which is true but with this monitor size you can do it with 16:9 aspect ratio as well. I hated to switch from 4:3 to 16:9 (at least there's 16:10 option for people like me).
+Destroyer954 21:9 is great for any task, even better for gaming. I used to play at 1920x1080. I've Tested myself a monitor 21:9........best buy ever =D
+Destroyer954 Actually its much better. 16:9 is not that good for multtask, because if you use 2 programs side by side, both will be too small, while in a 21:9 it'll have plenty space. But if your focus is programming, you may as well just buy 2 16:9 monitors for probably the same price.
+iceagex I'm trying to compare 4k 16:9 vs ultra wide, not fullHD +Helder Jefferson Ferreira da Luz currently I use 2x 16:10 and one old 4:3, also two even three VIM windows works just fine for me
It's funny watching this video on an ultrawide. You get black bars on all sides. Hate when almost everything thing is rendered in 1920x1080 instead of 1920x800 to really show off ultrawide 21:9. C'mon DigitalFoundry!!!
***** It's personal opinion, but I hate v-sync, it causes more micro stutter whenever the game drops under 60 than without v-sync, but I get terrible screen tearing without v-sync.
+Bas Bastiaansen I don't like tearing but I'll take it over the input lag vsync brings if I'm playing a fast paced game. Windowed borderless has about half the input lag as vsync with uncapped fps and no tearing. Still though, if you want truly no input lag, full screen no vsync is the only answer without gsync. I'm on a 1080p 60hz monitor as well.
+urbanelemental What I wrote down below was before I actually understood what you are saying. So for you Tomb Raider works fine with 21:9 out of the box? And below is my rant for people who are fine with stretched aspect ratios :D Really? People can tolerate stretched aspect ratios? Have seen this in few places where people got their first 16:9 TVs and watched 4:3 shows on TV stretched out and I was willing to fix their aspect ratio for free and when I did they didn't want that and told me to put it back on stretched mode, because "they paid for the whole screen so they want use it", then they criticize how some people are looking fat on TV. I face palmed hard and was like what ever as long as I don't have to do that.
same here-when I first bought my lg 29um67 I remembered someone mentioning that I'd need to mod some .ini for to make it work properly but I was pleasantly surprised when Lara was available in her ultra wide glory right out of the box. I'm guessing that there was an issue with the game when it was first released but probably the devs patched in 21:9 support later on
DISLIKE! another youtube guy makes a review like he want to sell this stuff to us! what about the negative points??? HE DIDNT LOST A WORD ABOUT BLB, DEAD PIXELS, IPS GLOW AND SCANLINES! These are big problems for this models too.
Acer monitors are crap, just like their PCs.The screens always look cheap and washed out colors. I prefer a Ben Q over any monitor. Go with the pros, who specialize in gaming fidelity and accuracy. Also any Plasma tv,if you can still find one, shits on any pc monitor, except Ben Q.
a video that has nothing to do with consoles and the pc elitist nerds still talking shit about consoles. freaking hilarious seeing these people think they are so much superior to console players. really sad as well.
I like that Richard says that he's not using his 4k monitor because of the crappy scaling of Windows. He's right. +conyo985 The scaling on small monitors works pretty darn well on OSX, Microsoft just needs to get their shit together and do it properly
6:09 For once in the entire history of the game industry, the word "cinematic" was actually used as an a positive rather than an excuse
There is no question anymore. My next monitor will be a 3440x1440 monitor. Anyone need a kidney? I'm selling!
+barondorado I want the Asus 34" LED G-Sync Rog Swift PG348Q :)
+Svein Olav Larsen ikr? Heck I'm saving up for one of these bad boys since its got everything i need. :)
holy shit 3440x1440 for 450$ ? and 75Hz ?.
but I made choice that my next monitor must be FreeSync.
50$ Ultrawide 4k 200hz 1ms ips
pratham rao in your dreams... that will need about 1280ti. 3 years in the future
awesome review. you should do more. your voice doesn't start doing my head in either and your really easy to listen to and talk about everything thats relevant
Excellently cheeky use of "Cinematic game play experience"
perfect for playing xbox one and ps4 at 30fps
don't forget the massive 792p resolution lol
+Possessed Gamer
the order 1886 is 21:9
+kttiger666 well, the hdmi port on this only does 50hz lol. so i'm guessing there would be judder =P i think you can overclock it to 60hz though
+Mortien Gerrux Depends on the TV, many high end models will make 1080p look just as good on a 4k tv as it would on a native 1080p tv. I've seen it, have a good day.
So that racing scene in the forest . . . . Battlefront one or two?
insane content. props to you
LOVE My Acer X34, games seem so strange in 16:9 now. Couldn't go back. glad to see you use it everyday also :)
Great video, thanks Wichard. As an ultrawide user I couldn't believe Fallout 4 lacked native 21:9 support. Really reduced the gameplay experience for me.
Ultra-wide just looks more favorable to 4k, since it can actually affect gameplay. A wider view does give a slightly more pleasant experience.
I read this and thought you said more peasant experience.. Pcmr has ruined my brain
Hugo Olloman Urgh, worst part about the PC community is how they berate the consoles. They aren't going to sway anybody into joining the PC community with that attitude
Wonder how 4K ultra wide display is too much for PC. Maybe next year we could
Jedidya Ricardo Polaris should be coming around the summer. Pascal following soon after. Let's hope 4k is qill be possible without breaking the bank
+Pan Z It's the opposite, Pascal in June announced at computex in Taipei and about a month later will we have Polaris. Also a refresh to skylake called Kabylake is also due at computex.
Looking forward to June ! Start piling up dat cash
Great review Richard.
so can an Nvidia user buy the Xr341ck and still have decent gaming results? Gsync monitors are about a $500 premium over their freesync counterparts right now.... :(
Meh this.. i like to play ARK survival evolved at 612p on my next generation console
Pre-Alpha, idiot, the Game isn't even out.
+FC B LMAO, it's not in pre-alpha, the game releases in june.
+FC B Mad?
+The Gamer the problem its shitty unreal engine 4
+dylan .dog yeah that game like a shit performance

Mortien Gerrux its only affordable 21:9 monitor at this time. all others are far more expensive
+Mortien Gerrux not necessarily
+Mortien Gerrux I bought LG 29UM57, which cost about 250 bucks.
+Mortien Gerrux its 29 inch hence the 29.
I'll wait until we have 3440 x 1440 144Hz G-Sync at an affordable price
same
+Mortien Gerrux a regular 5k monitor already goes for 2.5k, if we did get a 5120x2160 at 100hz within the next 2 years don't expect that thing to be any less than 3k when it first launches
Lol gaming at even just 4k is already useless, even with the best GPUs you can't get proper FPS, unless you're fine with 40-60fps...
Still waiting i see :p only 1 more year till release and another year till its affordable xD
Don't know why, but this was the most "cinematic" Digital Foundry analysis I've yet seen -- just can't put my finger on it.
Black bars maybe?
Is the Predator good value for money compared to similar monitors without G-Sync? Put simply, would I be happy with the LG Ultra-wide QHD?
Shame that you didn't mention that the Gsync one is £250 more than the free-sync one.
Another fantastic unbiased video. Thank you!
Could you please make a video about 144hz 1ms response monitors and if they are worth it? thank you!
+scj 95 Most definitely. I Much rather game on a 1080p 144hz 1 ms monitor than a 1440p 60hz monitor any day
Currently the predator is $1200 vs $850 for the XR freesync model. huge price difference. If I have a 1070 gpu, would it be worth it to get the XR34 model?
I also would like to know what ppl think of this. Is G-sync worth $400?
I personally think no. The extra 400 dollars for smoother frames could also just be used to get a second 1070 for that matter.
Tomb Raider 2013 has a native support for 21:9. I just played it yesterday on my Dell U3415W. Check the game's WSGF page for confirmation.

Is the GTX 1080 a good option for the Acer X34 Predator? 60fps average?
Easily... even the 1070 can do that...
Is it just me or does the monitor on the left look obviously smoother in this vid..?

1:35 what is the name of that video editing application?
The Acer Predator X34 also comes as a Freesync version, even though the internet pretends it doesn't exist (try finding a review). Other than omitting that fact, good review.
Metal Gamer What is it called?
Same name. I don't know the model number.
The freesync version is in the title as well, it's the XR341CK
The XR341CK is 75hz, not 100hz.
It doesn't exist. There is no 100hz Acer freesync monitor. There are two others however. The Microboard M340CLZ is a 100hz 3440x1440 VA FreeSync display, and so i the Samsung CF791.
Wow this would be amazing screens... If it wasn't over 1200$..
so when are you guys use new games?
i got my 2.5k 1440p just 3 years ago...... i'm also not sure if i should not just wait for hi res VR
I'm waiting for Ultra-Wide 4K. What resolution this will be?
+Negnav123 Should be 5160x2160 if I'm not mistaken.
+Negnav123 Wow yeah that would take some massive cards.
I'm glad I got my premium hardware now. Real life just kicked in for me, student loans as well as a car note..

Got my acer x34... fucking love it
Ive been thinking about getting one myself, did yours have much of a lightbleed effect like how early reviews were stating?
Why on video the freesync one have so much ghosting on video? o.O
my 980ti 6g with max settings ingame?
I really want an 21:9 monitor, but I can only afford a 29inch 2560x1080 display because my GPU is only a single GTX 970 which means 4k is outta question. Besides is it even worth it when coming a from a 24 inch 16:9 display? Does Dota 2 or CSGO even support this resolution?
CS:GO doesn't support 21:9...
+Der Krazy Kraut The 970 can max out 99% of games at 1440p and keep a smooth 60fps.
I also play Witcher 3, Farcry 4, and other newer games. But competitively I play Dota 2 and CSGO
Also love watching movies
MGsubbie No it can't. Tried it myself using DSR

Why are you putting in black bars if the video isn't actually 21:9... Or why are you uploading 21:9 content in 16:9 with bars?..
Does anyone know if the Alienware Alpha can take a i3 4170 non T CPU?
should be okay
+Troy Gorton You may run into a power limit \
+EdwardTennant Gaming I just picked one up and will test it later and check the temps and clock speeds. I think it should be ok as well
+Dylan Sands Yes that's what I'm worried about if that happens ill chick the 4130t back in it again I picked one up as the T model haswell CPUs are nearly obsolete
+Troy Gorton I'll check lol not chick sorry about the typing
2018 and probably gonna have to wait until 2019 to get one of these monitors. I swear I will seize the future before it becomes a bandwagon.
I'm still happy with 1080p
That stretched out Tomb Raider gave her thickness in the proper areas. I'd just stay with that mode.
love this channel
Please encode your future 21:9 videos in 21:9 aspect ratio and don't try to fit it in 16:9 (with black bars on top and bottom).
Yes, there's no difference on a 16:9 screen but on a 21:9 screen i'm getting black bars on every side of the video instead of just naturally scretching to the whole screen like a proper 21:9 video does...
Man, why do all gaming peripherals have a really ugly designs. I wish DELL would one day come out with a G-SYNC Ultrawide.
It's about the price of a 1440p 16:9 ips monitor, except I gain freesync and 75 hz.
lucario1111 USD, I'm AUD which is much more expensive than USD, what was $260 for you is more like $400-500 for me.
ACER Predator X34 (Branded "Predator" lineup as TOP OF THE LINE): NVIDIA G-Sync
ACER XR341CK No branding, but still backed by great company and features: AMD FreeSync
We already know NVIDIA's done it right even Acer knows it.
I really wish this wasn't the case, but I suppose it's the only rational way to justify the extra £150 price tag on the predator
Hugo Olloman Yeah it's obvious some marketing gimmick is definitely at play
curved are so expensive... I have 21:9 and I think this ratio should be a standard. It's amazing for games, work and movies
Keap in mind standards are not made overnight.
When it goes to TV's it need to pass years until we get a new standard.
Keap in mind people used 4:3 TV for years and years until most people got they 16:9 ones
the predator looks better in this video.
I'm buying a predator next year when the price goes down a little bit.
wow this screens look awesome! but i think with my gtx 970 it makes no sense to buy one of them and have 30 fps ...
+iceagex I'm trying to compare 4k 16:9 vs ultra wide, not fullHD
+Helder Jefferson Ferreira da Luz currently I use 2x 16:10 and one old 4:3, also two even three VIM windows works just fine for me
Digital can you lend me some of your gear?
It's funny watching this video on an ultrawide. You get black bars on all sides. Hate when almost everything thing is rendered in 1920x1080 instead of 1920x800 to really show off ultrawide 21:9. C'mon DigitalFoundry!!!
Will it for Xbox one or ps4
+Michael Ringer There's no point in using a 1440p monitor for consoles. You're just gonna get black bars.
+ValenKnight what's a good monitor to get
Hey Wichard.
LOOOOOOOOOOL
Meanwhile console community: Wow look at those 720p Battlefront grafix, so realistic !
lol here I am with a 1080p 60Hz display, I always have to use v-sync, I really want a freesync monitor.
Where is my friend Mitchell Hall?
my 250$ 24inch 120hz 1080p plays games just fine lol
I have a gtx 970. I can play plenty of games on 4k. Nothing over 60 fps thou.
I have no issue like what you're explaining with TombRaider. :|
+urbanelemental
What I wrote down below was before I actually understood what you are saying. So for you Tomb Raider works fine with 21:9 out of the box? And below is my rant for people who are fine with stretched aspect ratios :D
Really?
I'm guessing that there was an issue with the game when it was first released but probably the devs patched in 21:9 support later on
+urbanelemental Yeah, I dont remember having to use any mods for Tomb Raider to work in 21:9, it was out of the box.
ждем больше обзоров разных мониторов)
DISLIKE! another youtube guy makes a review like he want to sell this stuff to us! what about the negative points??? HE DIDNT LOST A WORD ABOUT BLB, DEAD PIXELS, IPS GLOW AND SCANLINES! These are big problems for this models too.
i would give my kidney for this...
Legends.
man. I hooked a ps4 up to this and all that showed on the display was three letters. "LOL"
Those 21:9 SUCK !!! PS VR is a game changer!
Now if only they didn't cost an arm and a leg...
If you give two legs, you can actually use the saved arm to game on it,
I'm talking from my own experience here.
21:9 > 4k
PC Master Race!!
Lol costs more than my pc
ps4 < shit
xbox one is shit not ps4 fuck pc and xbox funboy
xbox one there is running 900p or 720p and ps4 1080p and i see game on xbox one 612p and it's fall 8 fps xbox sucks
big losser
And last thing ps4 is king on this generation xbox one is far behind
+PCmaster Race I feel bad for you.
a video that has nothing to do with consoles and the pc elitist nerds still talking shit about consoles. freaking hilarious seeing these people think they are so much superior to console players. really sad as well.
1st
but xbox is better!
