If you do choose this method I highly suggest masking off the entire wheel well from over spray, the over spray will definitely be noticable inside the wheel well, and also recommend masking off some of the outside fenders, over spray is no joke it gets everywhere, or you can choose to use brush on paint, still looks just as good, no worries of over spray, much less masking..
Great advice! My brother painted my black mustangs ' calipers. He's the one that had a garage..I didn't. Yet he painted the calipers outside. Needless to say I was very angry at him.. red overspray on the front end of the car. Car was only a few years old! What a dummy! I was introduced to the almighty clay bar.. where the blue clay bar turned purple from all the overspray. Now, a bunch of years later, I will do this myself (girl power!) in my 2 car garage & do the job RIGHT this time. #brothersAreDumb #brothersSuck
Worth mentioning that you use axle stands and not to rely on the car jack. Also, some cars (VW, Audi etc) are more difficult to lift from a single point at the front so to be able to rotate the front wheels you need to jack up both sides. My preference is not to use spray paint but to use caliper paint (which in the UK can be had for £5) and after 3 coats gives a smooth finish and there's none of the overspray.

I liked your work as i work myself in this industry a piece of advice is that you should have masked off the brake pads as well for a professional finish and another way to get a better and clean job without covering the callipers with plastic bag can be done by brush painting it while it have a more thick enamel and should off covered with a clear coat in end to long laster and protect against chemicals used in the car washes these days! else than that i loved your preparation and work!!

Nice job! I've always brush painted them in the past and sometimes semi disassembled things and it means the cars off the road for a good couple of days (because I'm fussy lol) , so I think I'll give this method a go next time to speed things up. The only thing I'd do differently is I reckon I'd be inclined to shoot a coat or two of clear over the top, just for that extra shine and protection. Although that last coat was so thick it probably won't matter. Great vid for sure! 👍
The problem with the paint that he's using is that it is not ceramic part of the reason why you want to use ceramic is because it will last a lot longer
I did mine last 2 years ago but used a brush on epoxy. This method means I don't have to tape or mask anything off. In a perfect word, you'd paint them the same time you're doing a brake job. This way you get the top bracket sand blasted so it looks like new.
Just bought an 06 ML350 Benz and Im slowly tricking it out. I hadnt even considered painting my calipers but your vid makes the wheels look fantastic! Great vid, easy to follow, and thanks!
Love the way you give the basics. Quick and simple. Only issues i had were the single jack under the front end. Better safe than sorry. Do one corner at a time if you dont have jack stands. It may take longer but its safer than trying to balance a car on one point. Also taking off the caliper and bracket only need 4 bolts total. You can sand/wire wheel while its installed. Then just balance it on top of the covered rotor to paint. I would remove the pads as they are just held with clips or just by pressure of the caliper. Taping off the rubber and plastic parts and bleeder valve are a necessity but you also dont want paint on the rotor. Youll have paint that will be seen through some cars wheels. As for the rest its great.
Great video! straight to the point. I recommend using a mask when sanding off the caliper with that wire wheel or sand paper. Also, using a leaf blower will help to remove the dusk and brake cleaner will remove residue as well. I was glad to see your use of jack stands as well!
"No taking off any bolts or nuts." All lies, lies and more lies. He actually removed 20 lug nuts in order to remove the wheels......lol. J/K. The brake calipers look good. Great job!
@@stephenkuschel7459 Wow really? Are you that dense? The owner of the channel even got the joke and thought it was funny. Nobody said anything about taking off the caliper bolts (which he did not do). Please read (and comprehend this time) the comment again BEFORE making your snide remarks. It refers to taking off the LUG NUTS, of which there are 20 of (5 per wheel), and yes, he did remove them. You, my friend, are one of the major problems of the world today. You speak without understanding what you are even talking about. Go back to mommie's basement now and contemplate your sad life. SMH 🙄
Ive done a lot of caliper painting myself...This is one if the best videos Ive seen as far as beginner quick run through type. Good information and technique.
Pretty good video. You have have to watch out for the brake dust. That's a killer !!! My advice would be to wash the caliper properly the day before and allow it to dry properly for the preparation and painting the next day or two ( depending on the weather conditions)
Thanks for the great video it's you tubers like you that help make life easier. Rust-Oleum 2x paint is my go to paint didn't know I could do calipers with it. I have had positive results on everything I've painted with it including wheels. I'll even admit to not prepping properly and it still was good. DO PROPER PREPPING IF YOU WANT THE BEST POSSIBLE RESULTS.
If you are using a cross handle wrench, put your foot on one side and pull up on the other. Much more torque with less effort, and no offset on the nut, just straight torque.
I noticed the back of your brake pads also got coated in paint in the video. When you replace your brake pads do you paint the new ones before you replace them or just leave them as is?
I don’t usually subscribe to folks….but I did here. One thing I will note about steps. You used a heavy duty Jack to raise the entire front end of the car. I definitely can see the front shift & wobble. It was nice to see the smaller Jack stands used in the video shots with the wheel removed. You might have mentioned safety & the need to do that. I realize it would seem to be common sense, but if you aren’t used to jacking up cars and taking wheels off someone might get hurt or the car get damaged by using just one centered heavy duty Jack & both front wheels off the car. You did mention the safety aspects of the E-Brake & chocking the back wheels…..reminding people to use Jack stands once lifted would have also been a helpful tip. Other than that…..great video.
One of the greatest tutorial videos of all time! Thanks for uploading it and getting straight to the point. Excellent job and very informative. Appreciate it man.
Nice video, to the point. I like that. Never enough hours in a day if I want to sleep or sit-down and eat. Some easy reminders for me in your video. Saw how non-rusty your vehicle is, nice. Here there's a constant battle with rust (they pile on the road salts from October to May) and after 2-yrs my calibers look 5-yrs old with rust (average 18k miles a year on my Buick alone). When I re-do the front-end and rear-end this spring (due to sodium-chloride [road salt] and rust) I'll keep your video in mind. Yea, I'll still have to take the calibers off to paint them, but they'll be off anyway. Thank you.
I’ve been planning on painting my brake calipers. First of all I just wanna say thank you for this video and getting right to the point and I love the red But if I use the 2x ultra cover primer. What purple should I use if I want like a vibrant candy purple?? Should I use the dupli color metal cast or the vht anodized color coat?
Atleast take off the brake pads then just spray it , i work on cars and i always see customers have paint on the backin plates n pads makin them stick and not realease fully ..so keep that in mind the small extra step goes a long way . Other wise good job
I was about to comment the same. Take an extra 10 minutes and disassemble everything for paint. Makes a bigger impact when the pads are still the original color.
You are correct. Take the brake off then spray. This paint is not for brake. it will over heated. It will only last for 1 year. The paint chips will stuck on to you brake pad.be careful. this is friendly suggestion. @@claywilliams8128

Would like to say thanks for this video! I painted my Nismo RS callipers red but had to remove the semi-rusted/factory paint first which added a step but with your video they came out really nice, I'll do the rear callipers next week haha.
Killer good vid, man. Love the get-to-the-point approach. Had my attention all the way to the end. Many thanks for the lesson. Now, I'm off to the hardware store for some paint and primer!
Finally,a DIY video without 3 minutes of waffle at the beginning. Thanks. One question, no need for any clear coat? I gather the paint is robust enough?
Great Video!...I use the first coat to get into all the 'holes'...hard to get paint into areas...the overspray will hit the 'easy' areas...then go from there
Right? Second, If I was going to tell someone new how to do this, I would rather recommend using actual caliper spray paint, or high heat spray paint from autozone or whatever. Regular rustoleum will just chip and flake in the long run on parts that get semi hot. lol
Straight forward! Thank you sir, I was just about to take it to a shop and get them painted. I am definitely trying this myself! Great content, new sub here!

Dude! Those bright metal brackers part of which sticking out at the bottom and top of pads is where your pads slide back and forth, they can not be contaminated with paint, clearcoat, etc. For simple safety, if you understand how floating caliper/brake system works, you should've remove pads and sliding brackets. Beatifull job cant be just about looks good screw safety measures, some safety and common sense should be applied especially if you advertize/show this to general public, contaminating pads and rotor surface with all those cleaners does not seem like a great idea either. 2 stinking bolts out and you could have remove pads and hardware, gain full acces to put plastig bag over rotor and have better acces around the caliper to clean and paint, I mean you could mount it back without pads, just dont press brake pedal while at it.
proper technique. some people just spray primer and then paint the caliper then wonder why couple years later their pads siezed up... Its cause now theres rust flakes trapped under the paint causing the whole thing to blister... Naturally unpainted rusty calipers have the rust flake off and fall onto the road, but when its trapped under the paint... well you get it. Need more good vids like this on youtube

@@patrickolds2248 It’s still looking good with minor chips which I can touch up. If I can do it over again I would add additional coats.
Just bought an 06 ML350 Benz and Im slowly tricking it out. I hadnt even considered painting my calipers but your vid makes the wheels look fantastic! Great vid, easy to follow, and thanks!
I use brake caliper paint not for heat so much as it is resistant to brake fluid, good job :)
I liked this video 3 seconds into the video. “Not a fan of long drawn out intro you know what this video about” my man I can respect that
Love the fact you add “cheaper alternatives” in to the line up as not all us have the equipment, brilliant! Instant sub lol
:)
He has a stand under the car if you look.
Nice vid man! Seriously well done, did not even think about skipping ahead at any point & was captured by your thorough explanations! 🙌 🍻
Dude, thank you. That was one of the best DIY videos I've ever seen.
Great video! straight to the point. I recommend using a mask when sanding off the caliper with that wire wheel or sand paper. Also, using a leaf blower will help to remove the dusk and brake cleaner will remove residue as well. I was glad to see your use of jack stands as well!
Thank you. I like the Slit in the plastic to cover it up! Saves time and tape. I think I would clear coat a few as well thought. Prevent chips!
"No taking off any bolts or nuts." All lies, lies and more lies. He actually removed 20 lug nuts in order to remove the wheels......lol. J/K. The brake calipers look good. Great job!
Hahaha thanks man!
🤔Hmmmm, you're right! Still love the video tho😄⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Forgave him because of the no nonsense intro😎😄
He did not take the caliper bolts off. What don't you understand?
@@stephenkuschel7459 Wow really? Are you that dense? The owner of the channel even got the joke and thought it was funny. Nobody said anything about taking off the caliper bolts (which he did not do). Please read (and comprehend this time) the comment again BEFORE making your snide remarks. It refers to taking off the LUG NUTS, of which there are 20 of (5 per wheel), and yes, he did remove them. You, my friend, are one of the major problems of the world today. You speak without understanding what you are even talking about. Go back to mommie's basement now and contemplate your sad life. SMH 🙄
Gonna comment this also hahahha but great vid
Ive done a lot of caliper painting myself...This is one if the best videos Ive seen as far as beginner quick run through type. Good information and technique.
Pretty good video. You have have to watch out for the brake dust. That's a killer !!! My advice would be to wash the caliper properly the day before and allow it to dry properly for the preparation and painting the next day or two ( depending on the weather conditions)
GermX lol
The bag over the disc is BRILLIANT!!! Thanks!
I like the garbage bag mask idea. FYI: heating the paint with warm water for 1/2 hour will help the paint flow better
Yes sir I'm cold weather that can help!
Great video. One suggestion: when loosening the lug nuts, push downward rather than pulling up. Less risk of pulling your back! Ask me how I know 😂
That shits painful. Hopefully you recovered quickly.
If you are using a cross handle wrench, put your foot on one side and pull up on the other. Much more torque with less effort, and no offset on the nut, just straight torque.
Pulling gives more control when nuts break free. Pushing could cause you to lose your balance or hit your knuckles.
@@SJ-me9fj Yep ^^ never push on a wrench unless you have no other choice.
Invest in a torque wrench and an impact driver. Save your back.
Excellent. Especially like the true low-budget DIY angle. No fancy tools and you can still get the job done.
I noticed the back of your brake pads also got coated in paint in the video. When you replace your brake pads do you paint the new ones before you replace them or just leave them as is?
No!
This has to be one of the best videos on painting calipers. Now I'm off to watch the wheel painting video to see if painting my wheels is doable.
How many cans of primer and red paint do you need to do all 4 calipers? Thank you great vid!
I did it with one tall but if u do it with small cans get two just to make sure.
@@MASK-pp6hq thank you!
Thank you.
Another question - using regular enamel paint on the calipers, do you find that the paint gets melted away by brake cleaner?
Brake cleaner wrecks all paint.
Just ran across this video bc I wanna paint my calipers and he explains it perfectly. Definitely subscribing

One of the best videos I've watched, gets on with the job , no waffle 👌
OMG! I wish there was a love 💘 button. If I can overcome my fear of jacking my car up by myself I will most DEFINITELY be doing this AND the wheels myself
P.S. I SERIOUSLY ❤️ your no fluff, step by step approach!
Note that a set of blocks were placed under the car after it was jacked up. Always an important safety step when working with a car off the ground!
Tbh with you man your the best you understand everyone and what execution they are looking for great job man!!
Would like to say thanks for this video!
I painted my Nismo RS callipers red but had to remove the semi-rusted/factory paint first which added a step but with your video they came out really nice, I'll do the rear callipers next week haha.
How long did you wait before drivjng again? A couple hours should be enough I’d think as long as I’m not putting full load on it yet
Man freaking UA-cam is one of the greatest inventions on earth! Great video dude! I can't wait to knock mines out.
Killer good vid, man. Love the get-to-the-point approach. Had my attention all the way to the end. Many thanks for the lesson. Now, I'm off to the hardware store for some paint and primer!
Yay! No boring video intros! Bravo!
THIS video ought to be ranking first for how to paint your brake calipers!
Hahah appreciate that man!! Mine shows number three! What about you?
Fantastic vid! Straight to the point & easy step by step instructions. Will be doing mine. Thank you for sharing!!
Even if you do this outdoors wear at very least a dust mask. Nothing like breathing in floating metal dust. Your lungs will thank you.
Finally,a DIY video without 3 minutes of waffle at the beginning. Thanks. One question, no need for any clear coat? I gather the paint is robust enough?
I see we have 40 haters that disliked this video 🙄 .... nice job looks amazing!!! I subbed👍🏾
Glad to have you brother!!
Haters gon hate. What you gonna do 🤷
I’m a female but thanks glad to be here
@@Stayingtrue777 glad have you milady!
Great Video!...I use the first coat to get into all the 'holes'...hard to get paint into areas...the overspray will hit the 'easy' areas...then go from there
You couldn't have undone like 2 bolts to just take the caliper off for a second to actually paint the entire thing?
Right? Second, If I was going to tell someone new how to do this, I would rather recommend using actual caliper spray paint, or high heat spray paint from autozone or whatever. Regular rustoleum will just chip and flake in the long run on parts that get semi hot. lol
@@Brakzillaa shits gonna just flake off in a month
You are really professional. Today I tried your way of spraying the calipers and the results are unbelievably astonishing. Thanks a bunch!
Straight forward! Thank you sir, I was just about to take it to a shop and get them painted. I am definitely trying this myself! Great content, new sub here!
Best of luck!!!
Finally a guy that knows what he's talking about with paint........ I just love the logic of HIGH TEMP PAINT ( 1200 F ) on road car calipers ( Non Track ).... AND then put on some stickers that a ciggy lighter can destroy..... Go on guy's JUST think about that for a while........ lmfao....
Hey Mate! Great video and glad we have someone on here like you. Make it look so simple and damn will you save us all alot a time and money. I will definitely check out your other videos, keep them coming. Cheers dude 👍 👌
The car flipping videos on the channel page are my subs favorite by far. Check one of those out and let me know what you think!! Glad to have as a subscriber!
IMO, this is the best DIY caliper painting video! Will definitely be doing this project. Thanks, Buddy!
Brake calipers can reach temps way past 500 degrees on the track (road course). Good enough to melt just about any paint non high-temp. Otherwise, great video 👍😁
Well if you're a regular driver like most then you don't gotta worry but yeah I agree
Very RARE to have calipers reach that temp in a work car!!! I don’t have time to tell you how rare it is! Great video!!!🌹
@@Justmi2cents I did say the ROAD COURSE. I imagine you probably don't drive your work car on the road course.
Great video! Very well explained. Thanks to this content I could paint my Hyundai Elantra SEL 2018 calipers. It took me hours, but finally it was worth it.
Tremendo video. Muy bien explicado. Gracias a este contenido pude pintar los calipers de mi Hyundai Elantra SEL 2018. Me tomó horas y finalmentte valió la pena.
Awesome work man! You earned yourself a new subscriber. Keep up the work.
Appreciate it brother! :)
@@BuddysDIY your welcome, gonna do this to my trans am thanks to you
Thanks for a straightforward video without all the filler bs. Well done sir!
Was thinking the same!! I take mine apart once a year just to clean and grease those sliders, and he just painted them!
Roman you should make a safety video about which parts not to paint on the break calipers
Excellent video!! I am sold!! The black wheels look aftermarket too. Nice touch!!
Great job bro
But I think you could have shielded the inner wheel well from overspray with more garbage bags !
proper technique.
some people just spray primer and then paint the caliper then wonder why couple years later their pads siezed up...
Its cause now theres rust flakes trapped under the paint causing the whole thing to blister...
Naturally unpainted rusty calipers have the rust flake off and fall onto the road, but when its trapped under the paint... well you get it.
Need more good vids like this on youtube
Looks clean!!
Thanks Todd!!
I did this but I put a few clear coats on after awhile and I'd like to appreciate you for making this video it really helped
Probably OK on a crappy car, but on a nice car, I wouldn’t want all that over spray on everything! I would be be taking the callipers off.
And on a crappy car is not even worth the effort. A catch 22
@@Viral__TV If your a 16 year old with a crappy car. Cheap and probably completely worth it for them.
Because you don’t know what you’re doing, a good painter won’t get overspray on his car
This is by far the best video and well well-documented
