Trip report with some tips. First and foremost, a huge thank you to Brian and @Paint Society for the video, it REALLY helped my second whack at this go a jillion times better. Considering the number of newbies watching, here's some tips and tricks from a newbie that Brian didn't cover probably because he's old hat at this and it's just a given to him.
    1. Buy all of your paint at one time from one place. If you have the option, look at the bottom of the cans and get matching lot numbers. QC seems a little loose over at Duplicolor and the color can vary widely from can to can. If you expect to need touch-ups down the road get a few extra.
    2. I only used 2.5 cans of each to paint five 20" six-spoke F150 wheels.
    3. I can't speak for any other colors but the Graphite is really gritty, the Sprayway wipe is a good idea between all of the base coats.
    4. Avoid trying to paint the wheel upright, hard to see where you're getting good coverage. Laying down at an angle like the video shows worked best. I did mine with a light coat left to right, then a light coat up and down on each layer.
    5. Don't make the first spray out of the can on the wheel, give a quick shot away to avoid spit/splatter. Wipe the tip often as suggested.
    6. Get some slip on shoe covers. Overspray on the floor builds up quick and sticks to your shoes, then you forget and go walking thru the house leaving paint on your floor that's a SOB to get off.
    7. Watch the video and take notes. What sandpaper did he use for that? How long between coats was that? Lots of steps and times in this video, handy to have them written down.

Well done! With any paint project, prep is key. This video illustrates doing it the right way. Your newly painted rims are going on your coveted ride and taking shortcuts does not work. They are going to get a lot of abuse from the road, brake dust, repairs, etc and you want a quality durable finish. No point in doing it if you're gonna do it half-assed. Worth spending the time on the front end to get the results and longevity on the back end. Great video!!

It’s been a long process, but I’m an enthusiast, I believe we all are, it’s a pretty fun process actually, demands attention, patience and organization, but very rewarding, you save a lot $$$ buy doing it yourself.

I've used a lot of the eastwood 2k aerospray cans. I think something to stress is the temperature needs to be as close to 70f as possible or higher and most importantly you need to shake the crap out of the can before and after you pierce the hardener. I had issues when I first started using the 2k aerospray paint because I wasn't shaking it well enough especially with the color paint, the primer isn't too bad. I want to say it's the cans with the white knozzles that really need that extra shaking and make sure the can is warm it doesn't need to be hot but just warm. I've easily used over 250 cans of that aerospray paint and I haven't had a single issue after I figured out the temperature is important not just with your project but the actual can needs to be warm it seems like common sense but it's something I make sure of everytime now and most importantly you have to shake the hell out of it like 3 minutes before and 3-4-5 minutes after piercing the hardener. I'm sure I go slightly overboard with the shaking but when I first started using it every single can clogged up because I wasn't shaking it enough I was doing 2 minutes before and 2 minutes after and that wasn't working well for me the cans clogged up not just the tips but the whole can. Like I said the primer is more forgiving I believe all the cans with the black knozzles are more forgiving. Then also the primer goes a lot further than the color like a lot further so get extra color.
Otherwise I love that 2k aerospray stuff it's really good paint especially if you prep well and keep it at temperature while it dries, I use the chassis black on roll cages and bumpers and stuff on jeeps and it's very durable, surprisingly durable and very easy to use especially when you just have a single item to paint.

I have a nearly new set of aftermarket wheels in perfect condition that have a flat finish that I now realize that I hate, and I want to spray them in a gloss finish. Very nice, love the masking! I may have missed it but on the back of the Dupli-Color can it states, "for additional coats after one hour, wait seven days for the paint to cure." Because this is an enamel it needs to set. If you coat with the clear too soon it could mess up all of your work. I'd wait to do the clear coat. If you use a lacquer clear coat it will definitely mess up the enamel. Always check to make sure your product makeup matches it's just easier, especially after you spend hours prepping. It's 90% prep and 10% finish that makes the wheels look good.

Overthinking is definitely one mistake people make (I know I do it too) but I think an even bigger problem is impatience (again I have been guilty of that many times.) What I have brought myself to do when painting anything is to set a timer on my phone. I either walk away from the project completely while a coat dries, or I start on something else and don't go back to it until my phone goes off. This helps with going back too soon, or even waiting too long in some cases.
I've painted wheels before so I already know lots of the tips and tricks you showed, but I watched anyway because I have a set of wheels that need touched up and I still learned a few things.

    • @indyguy5570
      @indyguy5570 2 роки тому

@@robwhiff3411 About 20 to 30 minutes after the base coat. Any longer than an hour and you should wait to clear for at least 2 weeks or more. It is best to clear right after the base coat is applied ~ (20 to 30 min wait) then apply your 2k clear in at least 3 coats, the first coat should be light to medium and the others can be sprayed a little wetter, the heavier the coat the more shine you will see but be careful not to coat to heavy to where it runs. Just take it slow and ensure even coverage and you will be fine. It is much easier to apply additional coats compared to removing and starting over.

Hi Brian a great tip for doing wheels is to let the air out and get a tyre shop to break the outside bead on the tyre leave the inside bead locked in place so no need to re balance ,now with the outside bead released you have a gap between the tyre and rim so much easier to work on and you get the paint round the edge now grab a piece of corflute (plastic cardboard) the stuff they make signs from now get a piece bigger than the wheel and tyre cut a hole in the middle the same as the tyre size eg 17" tyre 17" hole cut a slit on one side you can now slide it in between the tyre and rim and there is no need to mask anything except the valve stem and once its all painted you just remove the corflute and pump the tyre back up the bead will pop back on and your ready to go .
In Australia we can't get most of the products you use and the American products that are available are way over priced eg the 2k clear rattle cans are $60 each ,anyway love the tips and tricks thanks for all the work you put into the videos .Have a great Christmas and a safe new year .

This is probably the best instructions I've found so far for wheels.
Do you guys have any bumper repair spot repair videos ?

Not spot repair bumpers but spot repair fenders and quarters

It looks like the Eastwood glazing putty is unavailable. Do you have suggestions for a substitute ? I seen someone use Evercoat lite weight for the wheels, but it says it can be used on fiberglass as well. So I'm thinking I can try to patch the small bumper and have some left over for the wheels on this old Honda.

YES this is so much more work than it looks lol. It took me TWO days to do this! I am just hoping it lasts more than 3 months. If you can afford it just have your rims dipped! A lot of work for just a few months.

If you want those clear coats to lay out better, warm up your cans first. Boil some water in a pot, remove it from the stove, let the water cool for about 5 minutes, then drop the cans into the hot water, and let them sit till they get nice and warm. DON'T boil the cans, just the water!!!
These cans will last for months after breaking the bladder, if you put them in the freezer when you are done. Don't drop a frozen can into hot water though, let it get to room temp, then drop it in the hot water, to smooth out the paint.

Good video eastwood 2k stuff is really good paint and easy to polish. I figured out a way to make sanding so much better with a sheet of paper. No folding needed just put duct tape on the back of it. Only flaw with it is you have to mark it with the grit with a pen otherwise youd have to guess. Remember dont overthink it, its just duct tape.😂Thank you for your knowledge and your awesome techniques.

I was going to post a negative review on how many sprays you need to paint you're rims and it's a waist of time. But I saw the whole video and I was so into it that it made me want to do that to my rims. Thank you for explaining things in detail. Theirs other videos that just show you to spray the rims and whaam bam thank you mam. you tell it step by step and this is my first time painting and this video game me so much knowledge . Thank you . Where is the 100 star review at?

I have 4) 20" five spoke factory ram wheels that have 100 miles on them are in new condition. They are painted in that factory silver paint and I believe they have a clear coat on them. Do think I need the primer? How much paint and clear coat do you think I'll need? I plan on using the same paint & clear coat brands as you did in your video.

Great video, but I ended up with way too much product based on their recommendations. I only used two cans of paint and one can of clear coat. I was spraying very generously on bigger rims than a Honda, not sure why the big difference in amounts. Now I"m stuck with paint that will go bad and less money in my pocket. But, they did turn out great.

Plan to do this to my jeep liberty jet rims. They are 20 inch factory aluminum that were once chrome. But they were corroding so the previous owner plasti dipped them black. Now the plasti dip is peeling away and it ruins the look of the suv, body is in good shape. I planned on just popping the wheels off and one at a time painting them a metallic silver. I'll follow this guide when I get time.
