I can totally get the whole "chore to play" comment in the review. It reminded me of my attempt to play Final Fantasy VII: Remake on PC a few years ago. I got to around chapter 3 or 4 before deciding I was done with it and putting it on "hold." I haven't been back since.
Great review. I can agree with most of your points. I hate the towns though. Costa Del Sol was fine, Kalm, Junon and Cosmo Canyon were stupid though. Instead of a cozy little town, Kalm here is an overpopulated tourist attraction. Instead of a collection of oppressed inhabitants, Junon was basically a cozy fishing village. Instead of a spiritual retreat, Cosmo Canyon was, just like Kalm, some stupid tourist attraction. The world building in Rebirth is godawful.
Agreed! Kalm wasn't calm, Junon was just like Midgar in that it was too happy for the kind of environment the original game set, and Cosmo Canyon was robbed of any spirituality that didn't feel KH-tainted

@@Brocknoth Or they were trying to say something with those portrayals. Calm being turned into a tourist attraction (and thus a shell of its real self, which several inhabitabts of the town comment on!) is actually very on point with modern discourse (especially relevant in Japan at the moment) about the destructive nature of tourism. And that in turn feeds straight into the already present anti-capitalist themes of OG FF7. What Shinra did was strip Kalm of its identity and make it a marketable tourist destination for the sake of profit. Costa Del Sol is the same. They both have this veneer of pleasant, safe and marketable, but they are, for lack of a better description, set pieces that cover up the negative consequences of what Shinra is doing, and the way people live their lives under them. The Gold Saucer has a similar function. And it mirrors real life perfectly. Behind every popular tourist destination there is an endless amount of exploitation of both people and the enviorment - which then goes unseen or ignored by the very people who participate in it. So I actually think those portrayals specifically were on point. And we do get to see the consequences of Shinra's exploitation in other places - like Barrets hometown. Or the slums of Midgar. So it's not like those things aren't present. So no, I don't think changes were made for the sake of "sanitization". It is clear that a lot of thought was put into those portrayals. Also Dyne did effectively kill himself by running into those Shinra bullets. It's less obvious, but the core motivation and end result is still there. And yeah, that was probably changed due to the age rating.
Original FF7 all the way. I had my fill with Remake. I kept forcing my way through it hoping that the story would eventually redeem itself. It did not. I don't have any plans on investing anymore money in the new ff7 universe, mobile or otherwise.
I never really bought into it. I saw it for exactly what it was. I had no interest in my childhood being sold to me piece by piece for a little dopamine. Once I learned that Tetsuya Nomura was involved, I just wanted it to be over already.
@@gamervet4760 Well, unfortunately for me, I didn't realize it until I played Remake myself. They were pretty sneaky. I tend to avoid spoilers, so I was under the impression that even though they were changing the combat system, they were going to tell the same story. Boy, was I wrong. I would like to say that I am waiting for all of this to blow over, but you know as well as I do, Nomura fantasy 7 is going nowhere.

Unfortunate you guys see it that way. I personally don’t want just one game, more content is better and the games are a blast to platinum. The over negative view on this is upsetting because a lot of effort and care was still put into these.

I've played through the whole game and a little more half way through Hard Mode now. Your analogy of a tootsie pop at the end of the licks isn't quite accurate. It's more of a touristy train ride to multiple states and locations. You get a little here, a little there along the way. There's parts that aren't for everyone, I can see that. And there is a LOT to do in this game. My first run through (going for 100% clearing of everything) took me about 140 hours. But yeah, it's not like you're waiting to get to the end like in FFXIII at all. Actually, most of the systems in this game are far more complex than they initially need to be because they're designed to compliment and aid you in Hard Mode once you clear the game the first time. Then those types of systems become absolutely necessary, and the feeling of combat drastically changes to one of skill and technicality rather than button mashing.

People will complain for any number of reason. The game is too hard, it is too easy, too many optional side quests, why is there lore in a side quest.... It should be part of the main quest...there is too many side quests and minigames...there is nothing to do in the open world....yikes.... the fans do not know what they want. You can enjoy whatever you want, or you can complain about the small things in life...I recommend you save your money. No one can force you to buy a game that spoiled the plot before it was even release. The game was never a one to one remake

I was fine mostly during the majority of the game's story. I, personally, had no problems with all the mini games. It's the store that bothers me the most. I was really hoping they'd wrap up the Whisper stuff from Remake and conclude it here, but they ended making it even MORE complicated and even made 1 or 2 OTHER types of Whispers. Then the whole bouncing back and forth between worlds. I think I even saw a 3rd Stamp type dog so we're dealing with at least 3 worlds here now... This is getting out of hand. I wanted to be hyped for what they were going to do, but, again, the final chapter was just a cluster-fuck of nonsense. They butchered the feelings and presentation and left me with nothing but "what... the hell is happening?" --and not in a good way. It's in a way like, "Okay, this isn't fun anymore. I'm not getting any satisfaction of either loss or victory. I just watched a bunch of scenes that told me absolutely nothing." And the whole time, all I can picture is Testuya Nomura rubbing his chin with a big grin on his face thinking, "They'll love this crazy story." I guarantee RIGHT EFFING NOW, they will NOT end the 3rd part wholesomely. It'll have some stupid-ass cliffhanger that leaves you saying 'wtf' again instead of just giving the player the satisfaction of a completed story.
They make it confusing and explain nothing on purpose, so people have to buy the third game to see it all wrapped up. People need to start seeing SE for what they are and have been for 20 years. A company that wants money more than they want to make good games.
"You know that awful snowboarding section in the OG? Well we are going to do that, but diversify it into 70 hours of even worse minigames! GOTY!" This game sucks. This devotion to brand names rather than the quality of the content from gamers needs to end. This is not a good game and it will never live up to the legacy the OG created. Ever.
But... That snowboarding game was fantastic. More seriously though, the Great Glacier / Gaea's Cliff chapter of old school Final Fantasy VII was a bit of a slog. However, I think it was justified because it did add some depth and struggle to game's narrative. As for the new games, I've found that I enjoy them the most when they're sticking to the original script. The more they wander off script, the more I tend to hate them.
I got excited whenever Sephiroth makes an appearance. What was he trying to do with the WEAPON? He put a lot effort trying to cut it up. Tifa almost got Aerithed in that scene. He almost gatotsued her!
I couldn't even sit through a playthrough on UA-cam of this damn thing... Thank you for a honest review, I agree all the way with it and I can only hope Square stays away from other classics like FF6 or Chrono Trigger... don't want them to turn those into shit too :\
Yeah it sucks for people that wanted to play FF7 with better graphics etc. and voice acting. Instead people got some action games in the Final Fantasy 7 universe. Was this really what Final Fantasy fans wanted? Hell if I know. Once I saw most people favored FF7 over FF6 I quickly realized I wasn't in line with the average Squeenix fan.
I want to state for the record that I played FF7 OG on PlayStation with a memory card twenty five years ago. Beat Emerald and Ruby. Loved it then. Rebirth is an improvement but we cannot forget: you’ve now potentially paid $140 for an incomplete game. Please justify that.
Economically speaking, the buyer values the game more than $140 . They did not want to wait for the final part to release, or for combo pack deal. They wanted to avoid spoilers, so they got it asap. Some players make content too.
A few points I agree with you on. The multiverse/timeline stuff is silly and unnecessary, it wasnt needed to flesh out the original and this game could've done without it. That being said, a few issues with your review of it. You complained a lot at the beginning of robed zombies that weren't in the original, that's incorrect. Even from the beginning of the OG, you met someone who was going to be a black-robed guy and throughout the first part of the game, you saw a lot of them. In fact, in the Northern Crater, there'a an entire segment where you see those robed guys going along the path, dying from exhaustion and being blown off the path. The lore behind them were the same as well, ppl who were injected with jenova cells and taken control by Sephiroth. In fact, they fleshed it out by having ex soldiers like Roche and the inkeeper from Kalm showing up as black robes. The whole conflict of Cloud's character, both in the OG and the remake is how similar he is to them. The combat was probably one of the best aspects of this and the remake. You mentioned that you didnt do a lot of the sidequests but if you did, you would've seen the progress your characters made strength-wise through materia and folio growth. Plus, your battle strategy of just buffing and healing Cloud would've been challenged had you done some of the side content like the battle simulator, the mini bosses and fiend challenges throughout the map.
Ok - when you think of OG psx FF7, when you engage in general discourse, when you review almost 30 years of posts about the game - does ANYONE talk about black robes guys? No. It’s inconsequential. This is classic Nomura who can’t help himself from trying to be Hideo Kojima and failing spectacularly. Stick with Mickey, Nomura-San.
@@UptownBobbi I'd disagree that the black robes characters were inconsequential in either the OG and Rebirth regardless of the discourse that may or may not surround those characters. Now granted, I thought Roche just turning into a black robe guy, complete w/ the robes and all was kind of silly and very kingdom heartsy, but just bc they aren't the most talked about aspect of the game, doesn't mean they didn't exist at all.

The combat...is action game style. What in the hell is wrong with people?! Yes it's more refined than FF15, whoopie. This isn't an RPG series any longer that much is certainly clear. You made the action gameplay better in a game that is supposed to be an RPG! Damn I'm glad I'm not a big FF7 fan or I'd be even more pissed. FF7's story was always a confusing mess that was poorly told with gameplay that was uninspired compared to previous entries of the series. But to transform it into an action game? Sad.

honestly, I'm more salty about what it did to Dyne and Cid (and also the Gi, and by extension Red's entire arc) than the Aerith drama. Maybe Cid's complete character 180 will get a redemption in part 3, but why would anyone want to stick around for that anyhow?
I really wanted to like rebirth and see what was so special about ff7 but it's just terrible constantly undercutting some great moments and characters to pad itself out and keep the plot from progressing I was already really forcing myself and by the time I got into the temple of the ancients and the game felt the need to show every second of what the split party was doing that was my breaking point and I dropped it

Yeah, I would have ejected the disk precisely during the Queens Blood forced story progression. I tolerated the "optional" minigames in part 1 because I wanted the good loot, but I absolutely despise card games. I remember almost giving up on DQ11's casino side quest progression requirement, because casino's are literally the real-life embodiment of hell to me. I'll never understand what makes them special.
I didn't play this, and I won't. I was so hyped by the FF7R1 when it came, and I loved it for a while, but how hard it fell down after made me absolutely loathe Squeenix. The gameplay was average, but fine, and it looks pretty fun in Rebirth as well, but I just don't want to play it. This is the only game that actually makes me mad. The story is so atrocious, and everything I've heard from Rebirth's story makes me sick, and I'm not going to subject myself to that torture. All this remake stuff, and the endless spin-offs has made me not even wanting to play the original, which is a masterpiece. Whenever I see Cloud's or Sephiroth's face, I just get angry 😅 I just don't understand how anyone can look at this story, and be like "Yes, this is an improvement over the original." Maybe I'm getting old 😂
LOL! I would just say this: modern Squeenix games are way too action focused. They lost their way for Final Fantasy. Better off playing Octopath Traveler gameplay and storywise. FF7 was not the masterpiece, that was FF6. Maybe FF9 and FF10. But FF7?! WHAT?! Was never the best in the series. FF5 is better even with it's stupid storyline FF5's gameplay crushes FF7.
nice. been checking daily for a new vid. Plus about FF7 rebirth? :D Game looks like another bloated open world repetitive time waster. I aint playing 80 hours to enjoy the 3-4 hours of goodness in it spread thin. Its a shame FF7 has a terrific story and characters but it's ultimately ruined by unecessary elongated bloat/bore. It's like watching a great 2 hour movie ruined by making it 20 hours...no movie is good for that long. It ruins everything.
So far they have managed to completely ruin the best story moments in the original game. This project is not a modern way to experience FF7. There is still only one way to do that, play the original game. I see people praising the visuals and music. Yup that music already existed, and now it’s used in all the wrong places, undermining it’s intended impact. And of course it’s going to look good, it’s 2024. I like turn based combat and even random encounters, remove that AND the original story…why would I buy this? Sephiroth and Cloud both look like girls, why? The over use of anime mouth breathing and grunting makes me want to puke. Thanks Square, good job.
The major problem is that there was the OG FF7 and then there was also all the spinoff games and movies and all of that extra stuff has significantly worse storytelling and characters but they also forced all that garbage from the extended universe into the remakes and it brought the whole thing down.
People standards are so low nowadays, not to mention FF7 fandom is a special breed. They got duped with a half assed remake sold in 3 parts + DLC and they clap like they saved their lives, spend an entire decade to finish the damn game... And the story is a complete mess for no reason, it's just layers and layers that make the game needlessly convoluted and you see people talking and theorizing about it, "it's not a remake it's a sequel, but not really but also yes because different realities, lifestream etc", bro FF7 wasn't that hard, it's basically a rag tag of misfits fighting a corporation from sucking the energy planet and in the process they discover an alien force trying to take over it that's it, no quantum multiverse bs no Kingdom Hearts like shadows, no shallow dialogue or filler quests that add nothing to the experience. It's a basic formula that's cohesive and works well, but I guess that wasn't enough for Square Enix overlords and they had to butcher the franchise one more time to grab some cash because they're creatively bankrupt
Yep I strongly agree, FF7 fanbois really are something else. But I've seen some hope, people are beginning to realize that yes...FF6 is better. FF5 is better. FF9 is better. FF10 is better. It took a long f'ing time though! Looking at modern Squeenix "Final Fantasy" titles though, the original FF7 does look like a masterpiece in comparison lol.

But I’m so glad that you going your honest review on this game because I know it’s not perfect and it’s going to be for everyone due to some of it’s problems at the end of the day. But I would rather play this, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy XVI, and Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin than Final Fantasy XVI any time of the day for as long as I live. 19:55 my question exactly; loved the game, currently replaying it even though i had my gripes with it. but i don't know why they felt like so much padding was necessary, especially given that the journey till the temple of the ancients is already fairly long, even excluding some locations- No way the manor and vacuum levels were necessary, some for Costa Del Sol although i can sorta excuse that because it's kind of the gimmick of the place imo. I just don't understand why they needed to artificially stretch the playing time like that, and i think it would've been a little better if they instead focused it on the alternative universe stuff because i still personally find it quite blurry, and i think that this needed extra exposition, not the road that we've already passed.
I still am impressed you finished it. But always remember. This is FF7-2, not FF7. It’s just they knew fooling people with remake rebirth, would out sell a FF7-2 labelled game by pure nostalgia and by recycling most of the first game: It saves them coming up with a sequel plot.

As say the right key words or ask questions that require information retention like plot details vs input like “I love the game cause I LOVE the game.” You’ll get some hilarious, desperate, squirming. And always remember when you see your SE fanboy comments: If the comment makes you ask yourself, “Could this be a bot…or are they just this naive?” Half the time with SE and I’ve seen it since 2012, the answer sadly is: yes: It’s straight up bot’s. I'll keep saying I feel they dropped the ball in actually just telling the story. If you never played the og, I think you'd have no clue what is really going on over all. And I'd rather have had an awesome remaster with some extra side quests and games added than all these weird story changes and multiverse timeline crap, yet alone other stupid changes, such as Cid and Yuffie as examples. Remake did a much better job comparatively than Rebirth for the story and feel of the og, but still suffers the same as Rebirth. And most of the minigames were anger inducing to me.

In it's first day it didn't manage to outsell Tekken 8 which had just broken 2 million in sales a few days prior (Feb 26th) Fast forward to present and we still have no sales numbers and interest in the game has dropped off like a stone. No one is talking about it anymore, there's no "buzz" like at all. And then just this week industry analyst Daniel Ahmed came out and said the game is "under performing" which he was subsequently roasted for by inane fans on Twitter. While we don't have the official dirt from Square themselves available data has allowed us to ballpark Rebirth at an ugly 2.3-2.5 million copies and I doubt it's gonna move from there. Karma is a bitch aint it G? As for your review it basically mirrors every other sensible review out there, including my own. Pretty graphics, good music, passable combat, some good character moments and world building, ETC. Story? Garbage. Pacing? Garbage. Mini games? unneeded padding. Open world Ubishit stuff? more garbage. Once you've sifted through the over abundance of empty praise and vapid "10/10 masterpiece!" reviews the consensus is pretty clear and hard to deny. The game is mid as fuck and no amount of corpo knob slobbing is gonna change that.
i did hear that sales numbers for it were significantly below part 1, which of course, would make perfect sense according to our thesis; ppl were excited about an ff7 remake, bought part 1, saw what it ACTUALLY was, and didnt return for the follow up. It would be the ultimate poetic justice if it ends up as an entirely self defeating endeavor lmao
@@DEGREELESSNESS Factor in that Remake dropped during Covid lockdown AND it was on PS4 to start. All of those factors contributed to it's sales. Which still weren't good enough for Square I'd wager. Took em multiple releases and 3 years to hit 7 million when they were likely aiming for 10+ and beyond. Palworld they are not, BG III they are not.

They hear their favorite streamer/influencer say "10/10 buy this master piece!" and they parrot it. They see the "hype" trailers with all the pretty colors, explosions, nostalgia, ETC and they lose their minds. There is no logical reason for WHY they continue to support a dying franchise. Just like there is no logical reason for anyone to be ok with how predatory something like Diablo Immortal is and yet the whales spend money on it anyways.

@@UptownBobbi You could go play it right now, they are in the game. They looked like tiny black blobs and when you talked to them they said "Uuughh, aaaugh." it was not cut. it was in the game. Good lord. Whatever it takes to be a wiener on the internet.
They are in the original from NIBELHEIM ONWARD and are teased before anything is revealed as a creepy loose thread that helps push the story forward. They certainly aren't thrown into the early parts of the 1st disc of the game and Hojo doesn't literally spoil them the first chance he gets with some "ThEy ArE yOuR bRoThErS, cLoUd" crap. Every. Single. Plotpoint. That brought emotional weight to the original had to be either spread so thin as to be frustratingly predictable or outright undermined. For example, Dyne self-deletes in the original after a confrontation with Barrett and realizing he can't be the father Marlene needs because his hands are too stained with blood. It's an emotional moment, now he gets murdered by Shinra after an overly long and flashy battle with Barrett, followed by a goofy boss battle with Palmer, all of which absolutely undermines the tone of the original. Shanghai Pete is right, as he almost always is. This game snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with it's arrogant, overindulgent BS. The story got fisted into oblivion. The characters were made boring or "omg so quirky" and these MFs literally sidelined the ENTIRE Cid plot with Rocket Town, arguably one of the most grounding elements of the original. Everything about the questionable morality or flawed-but-still-good characters of the original was sacrificed on the alter of greed.... and smothered in a heavy syrup of Tumblr fan-fic level writing/dialogue.

I agree with you about the game not being as good as OG if thats what youre saying, Im a purist through and through and Im just trying to be positive about this crap theyve done to the story, but it could do without the Whispers and "worlds" even if it is the "hopes and dreams" in some way. It is all so convoluted it takes from the iconic scenes. But trying not to get started on that. This comment is only about pointing out that the Uuugh aauughhs are also in OG even if not as often. One was even in Kalm I think, maybe it was later in the game though cant remember. In Rebirth they have the Innkeeper as turning into one. Anyway that is the least of the issues with this game. Lets trash the timeline theory and talk more about how this is a game about life and death and how theyve sucked that essence from the last two games.

As someone new to FF7 (by the end) I enjoyed remake but I was frustrated by its time wasting, mainly the side quests. I found Rebirth to be five times worse at doing this especially with the open world map objectives and side quests. Also the story was so convoluted by the end I’ve lost all interest in the third one. I literally struggled to finish the game as well. I was getting pretty bored by chapter 10/11 and then we got the Cait Staith section, I literally had to force myself to finish it at this point. I was thinking earlier into my play of Rebirth I’ll go back and just do the main missions of both the games later down the line to see if i find them better but watching reviews has made me realise how much the game wastes your time in the main story anyway and no doubt led to me being more frustrated by the game as a whole.
Sorry that 'profit motive' stuff is for the birds man. The profit motive was what got you the original FFVII and every other game you've ever enjoyed. Being profitable and good are obviously not mutually exclusive. Okay, SE stretched the remake to three games for profit, cool. But they could've, you know, made the extra material *good*. Added in-depth side quests that fleshed out the world and characters. Made the city more interactable. Added secrets and lore that you can only find by exploring extensively, etc. The reason they didn't do that wasnt because of some vague profit motive. Like, you wish that was the case. That would be easy to solve. Nah, the real issue is that SE lack the talent to make a great modern RPG. End of story. Thats why almost everything not from the original is mediocre. There have been three or four recent FFs and literally none of them are ever mentioned in the same breath as the actual cutting edge RPGs like Elden Ring, Witcher 3, BotW/TotK, Baldurs Gate etc. SE has fallen far behind.
This is the bottom line. When you compare this garbage with the likes of Baldurs Gate 3, or Divinity 2, it's not even close. Squeenix is nowhere near those games in any way looking at gameplay and story. Modern Squeenix is more action game oriented...so maybe better to compare to Elden Ring or Witcher 3. But hot damn that's even more brutal. FF10 was the last time the series was considered great. Some say FF12 but let's get real a sec..gameplay wise and storywise FF12 was medicore at best. When did FF12 come out? Well over a decade ago..almost 20 years ago I think? Squeenix has sucked for a very long time now unless you count Octopath Traveler.
The dudes in robes were in the original but I can't blame you for forgetting because they weren't used as a vehicle for an ENTIRE GAMES WORTH of plot like in Rebirth. They're failed Sephiroth copies. Shinra soilders infused with Jenova cells like Cloud that Sephiroth can control for some dumb reason. I really couldn't believe how much Afterbirth's plot was just following them.
It sure is fun though. Combat is excellent. Just running around the regions and fighting fiends was a great time. In 300 hours I did everything. Platinum, then just screw around being OP and killing everything, replay the story and sidequests all over again once more and finally become satisfyingly bored. I had a great time.
Yeah, I can see why a lot of people might hate it. But damn to me this is one of the best games I played and who knows maybe I just have bad taste lol for me it felt like being a kid again and getting lost in a world. I didn't need to play the story because the journey was the story and the minigames also had cute interactions among team members so that was always a treat. I see it as this game really needed to sell the bond of the team because of the 3rd game. We know the story, I just want to sink deeper into the character interactions but man I loved it. Anyone who dislikes the game/minigames/moments are totally valid, but I sit here and hope the 3rd game is bigger with more towns, more minigames and more character drama among each other lol just can't think of a moment where I was bored, whereas in ff16 I would fall asleep or need a break cuz I was tired. I think its cool though, more diversity in games. We need the ff16s and ff7rs. Probably doesn't help that i came into ff as a kh kid so....that probably explains it xD I just like what I like, but great vid :)
You really don't like those "Robed Zombies!" 😂 This wasn't good, but very entertaining to watch. All creatives know that they can't please everybody. So just do what you WANT to please those that you can.
There’s the fans that beat the original hundreds of times over the past 30 years and can have gripes but overall love the characters, the combat and the world building.. tho we are never fans of multi verses.. But then there’s a section of small UA-camrs who claim to be fans who don’t realize all these mini games were in the original and the same way you could skip most of them for the most part is the same way you can skip them here!! People say splitting the franchise into 3 parts was a bad move which I agree… but with the scope of midgar and the open world of this game and we still have icicle inn, mideel, rocket town, wutai, hidden dungeons, northern crater… how long do you guys think development would have been to add all that to one game.. I hate midgar.. so I’m definitely not the biggest fan of remake.. but the expanded universe and lore and attention to detail is actually pretty dope… I can understand why there are people who don’t like it.. but 1997 is 30 years ago.. they are trying to give us nostalgia bait while keeping it new.. and like I said I hate timelines.. But I can appreciate the game for what it’s for.. and what it’s not the oG is still better in my opinion… but this can be a welcome addition.. Ubisoft and a lot of these other companies give you broken games that are empty shells… they packed so much content into this game it’s a shame so many fake fans are coming out of the wood work acting like they were down from the beginning it’s sad…. The big channels are bought and paid for and the little channels tend to be more biased than objective… so who do we trust for reviews?

F these remakes. I didn't touch em. I played FF15 boy band edition, I knew where Squeenix was going back then. No you idiots I don't want to play a damn action game. I want a turn based RPG. Octopath Traveler (also Squeenix) is far more in line of what I want. Pretty graphics do not replace gameplay. And by the way FF7 was never the best of the Final Fantasy series, it was always a confusing mess in terms of storytelling. It was also a 3 man party, dumbed down gear system, a massive downgrade from previous entries esp FF6. Final Fantasy's gameplay didn't get good again until FF9 and FF10 with the character swapping mid fight. But yeah when I look at the original FF7 vs these remakes there's no contest, FF7 is a turn based RPG for me it's always gonna be the better game for that alone compared to the remakes. Don't call these remakes RPGs, they are not.

I watched this video to get out of an echo chamber of great praises of this game unfortunately all I found is just a bad review I agree the multiverse timey wimey stuff isn’t needed the game itself is aware of that because 95% of the game is a love letter to the original with expansions of lore there in the multiverse stuff doesn’t kick in till literally the last chapter and on a second play through you have the option to skip the Zack interlude segments. The card game IS NOT REQUIRED to complete you can very much ignore it (it’s an incredible card game btw). And while this game is not super difficult you cannot get through it by just mashing square with cloud UNLESS you put it in the easiest difficulty that sounds like a you problem the game actively encourages you to swap between your party members. And I can agree the cait sith box throwing was dumb
Complain way too much , the vacuum part and plug in takes a minute and you see it twice. Yeh the box part is terrible but you get a series of great boss fights next. Games like this come once in a while. We’re getting a lot of great ff7 content to last us a a while and the way the fanbase complains is too much. Also why would they kill cloud this early

Great review. I can agree with most of your points. I hate the towns though. Costa Del Sol was fine, Kalm, Junon and Cosmo Canyon were stupid though. Instead of a cozy little town, Kalm here is an overpopulated tourist attraction. Instead of a collection of oppressed inhabitants, Junon was basically a cozy fishing village. Instead of a spiritual retreat, Cosmo Canyon was, just like Kalm, some stupid tourist attraction. The world building in Rebirth is godawful.

Calm being turned into a tourist attraction (and thus a shell of its real self, which several inhabitabts of the town comment on!) is actually very on point with modern discourse (especially relevant in Japan at the moment) about the destructive nature of tourism. And that in turn feeds straight into the already present anti-capitalist themes of OG FF7. What Shinra did was strip Kalm of its identity and make it a marketable tourist destination for the sake of profit. Costa Del Sol is the same. They both have this veneer of pleasant, safe and marketable, but they are, for lack of a better description, set pieces that cover up the negative consequences of what Shinra is doing, and the way people live their lives under them. The Gold Saucer has a similar function. And it mirrors real life perfectly. Behind every popular tourist destination there is an endless amount of exploitation of both people and the enviorment - which then goes unseen or ignored by the very people who participate in it. So I actually think those portrayals specifically were on point.
And we do get to see the consequences of Shinra's exploitation in other places - like Barrets hometown. Or the slums of Midgar. So it's not like those things aren't present.
So no, I don't think changes were made for the sake of "sanitization". It is clear that a lot of thought was put into those portrayals.
Also Dyne did effectively kill himself by running into those Shinra bullets. It's less obvious, but the core motivation and end result is still there. And yeah, that was probably changed due to the age rating.

Original FF7 all the way. I had my fill with Remake. I kept forcing my way through it hoping that the story would eventually redeem itself. It did not. I don't have any plans on investing anymore money in the new ff7 universe, mobile or otherwise.
I never really bought into it. I saw it for exactly what it was. I had no interest in my childhood being sold to me piece by piece for a little dopamine. Once I learned that Tetsuya Nomura was involved, I just wanted it to be over already.

I've played through the whole game and a little more half way through Hard Mode now. Your analogy of a tootsie pop at the end of the licks isn't quite accurate. It's more of a touristy train ride to multiple states and locations. You get a little here, a little there along the way. There's parts that aren't for everyone, I can see that. And there is a LOT to do in this game. My first run through (going for 100% clearing of everything) took me about 140 hours. But yeah, it's not like you're waiting to get to the end like in FFXIII at all. Actually, most of the systems in this game are far more complex than they initially need to be because they're designed to compliment and aid you in Hard Mode once you clear the game the first time. Then those types of systems become absolutely necessary, and the feeling of combat drastically changes to one of skill and technicality rather than button mashing.

People will complain for any number of reason. The game is too hard, it is too easy, too many optional side quests, why is there lore in a side quest.... It should be part of the main quest...there is too many side quests and minigames...there is nothing to do in the open world....yikes....
the fans do not know what they want. You can enjoy whatever you want, or you can complain about the small things in life...I recommend you save your money. No one can force you to buy a game that spoiled the plot before it was even release. The game was never a one to one remake

I was fine mostly during the majority of the game's story. I, personally, had no problems with all the mini games. It's the store that bothers me the most. I was really hoping they'd wrap up the Whisper stuff from Remake and conclude it here, but they ended making it even MORE complicated and even made 1 or 2 OTHER types of Whispers. Then the whole bouncing back and forth between worlds. I think I even saw a 3rd Stamp type dog so we're dealing with at least 3 worlds here now... This is getting out of hand. I wanted to be hyped for what they were going to do, but, again, the final chapter was just a cluster-fuck of nonsense. They butchered the feelings and presentation and left me with nothing but "what... the hell is happening?" --and not in a good way. It's in a way like, "Okay, this isn't fun anymore. I'm not getting any satisfaction of either loss or victory. I just watched a bunch of scenes that told me absolutely nothing."
And the whole time, all I can picture is Testuya Nomura rubbing his chin with a big grin on his face thinking, "They'll love this crazy story." I guarantee RIGHT EFFING NOW, they will NOT end the 3rd part wholesomely. It'll have some stupid-ass cliffhanger that leaves you saying 'wtf' again instead of just giving the player the satisfaction of a completed story.
They make it confusing and explain nothing on purpose, so people have to buy the third game to see it all wrapped up. People need to start seeing SE for what they are and have been for 20 years. A company that wants money more than they want to make good games.

This game sucks. This devotion to brand names rather than the quality of the content from gamers needs to end. This is not a good game and it will never live up to the legacy the OG created. Ever.

More seriously though, the Great Glacier / Gaea's Cliff chapter of old school Final Fantasy VII was a bit of a slog. However, I think it was justified because it did add some depth and struggle to game's narrative.
As for the new games, I've found that I enjoy them the most when they're sticking to the original script. The more they wander off script, the more I tend to hate them.
I got excited whenever Sephiroth makes an appearance. What was he trying to do with the WEAPON? He put a lot effort trying to cut it up. Tifa almost got Aerithed in that scene. He almost gatotsued her!

Yeah it sucks for people that wanted to play FF7 with better graphics etc. and voice acting. Instead people got some action games in the Final Fantasy 7 universe. Was this really what Final Fantasy fans wanted? Hell if I know. Once I saw most people favored FF7 over FF6 I quickly realized I wasn't in line with the average Squeenix fan.
I want to state for the record that I played FF7 OG on PlayStation with a memory card twenty five years ago. Beat Emerald and Ruby. Loved it then. Rebirth is an improvement but we cannot forget: you’ve now potentially paid $140 for an incomplete game. Please justify that.
Economically speaking, the buyer values the game more than $140 . They did not want to wait for the final part to release, or for combo pack deal. They wanted to avoid spoilers, so they got it asap. Some players make content too.
A few points I agree with you on. The multiverse/timeline stuff is silly and unnecessary, it wasnt needed to flesh out the original and this game could've done without it.
That being said, a few issues with your review of it. You complained a lot at the beginning of robed zombies that weren't in the original, that's incorrect. Even from the beginning of the OG, you met someone who was going to be a black-robed guy and throughout the first part of the game, you saw a lot of them. In fact, in the Northern Crater, there'a an entire segment where you see those robed guys going along the path, dying from exhaustion and being blown off the path. The lore behind them were the same as well, ppl who were injected with jenova cells and taken control by Sephiroth. In fact, they fleshed it out by having ex soldiers like Roche and the inkeeper from Kalm showing up as black robes. The whole conflict of Cloud's character, both in the OG and the remake is how similar he is to them.
The combat was probably one of the best aspects of this and the remake. You mentioned that you didnt do a lot of the sidequests but if you did, you would've seen the progress your characters made strength-wise through materia and folio growth. Plus, your battle strategy of just buffing and healing Cloud would've been challenged had you done some of the side content like the battle simulator, the mini bosses and fiend challenges throughout the map.
Ok - when you think of OG psx FF7, when you engage in general discourse, when you review almost 30 years of posts about the game - does ANYONE talk about black robes guys? No. It’s inconsequential. This is classic Nomura who can’t help himself from trying to be Hideo Kojima and failing spectacularly. Stick with Mickey, Nomura-San.

Now granted, I thought Roche just turning into a black robe guy, complete w/ the robes and all was kind of silly and very kingdom heartsy, but just bc they aren't the most talked about aspect of the game, doesn't mean they didn't exist at all.

The combat...is action game style. What in the hell is wrong with people?! Yes it's more refined than FF15, whoopie. This isn't an RPG series any longer that much is certainly clear. You made the action gameplay better in a game that is supposed to be an RPG! Damn I'm glad I'm not a big FF7 fan or I'd be even more pissed. FF7's story was always a confusing mess that was poorly told with gameplay that was uninspired compared to previous entries of the series. But to transform it into an action game? Sad.

honestly, I'm more salty about what it did to Dyne and Cid (and also the Gi, and by extension Red's entire arc) than the Aerith drama. Maybe Cid's complete character 180 will get a redemption in part 3, but why would anyone want to stick around for that anyhow?

I was already really forcing myself and by the time I got into the temple of the ancients and the game felt the need to show every second of what the split party was doing that was my breaking point and I dropped it

Yeah, I would have ejected the disk precisely during the Queens Blood forced story progression. I tolerated the "optional" minigames in part 1 because I wanted the good loot, but I absolutely despise card games. I remember almost giving up on DQ11's casino side quest progression requirement, because casino's are literally the real-life embodiment of hell to me. I'll never understand what makes them special.

I was so hyped by the FF7R1 when it came, and I loved it for a while, but how hard it fell down after made me absolutely loathe Squeenix. The gameplay was average, but fine, and it looks pretty fun in Rebirth as well, but I just don't want to play it. This is the only game that actually makes me mad. The story is so atrocious, and everything I've heard from Rebirth's story makes me sick, and I'm not going to subject myself to that torture. All this remake stuff, and the endless spin-offs has made me not even wanting to play the original, which is a masterpiece. Whenever I see Cloud's or Sephiroth's face, I just get angry 😅 I just don't understand how anyone can look at this story, and be like "Yes, this is an improvement over the original."

So far they have managed to completely ruin the best story moments in the original game. This project is not a modern way to experience FF7. There is still only one way to do that, play the original game. I see people praising the visuals and music. I like turn based combat and even random encounters, remove that AND the original story…why would I buy this? Sephiroth and Cloud both look like girls, why? The major problem is that there was the OG FF7 and then there was also all the spinoff games and movies and all of that extra stuff has significantly worse storytelling and characters but they also forced all that garbage from the extended universe into the remakes and it brought the whole thing down.

19:55 my question exactly; loved the game, currently replaying it even though i had my gripes with it. but i don't know why they felt like so much padding was necessary, especially given that the journey till the temple of the ancients is already fairly long, even excluding some locations- No way the manor and vacuum levels were necessary, some for Costa Del Sol although i can sorta excuse that because it's kind of the gimmick of the place imo. I just don't understand why they needed to artificially stretch the playing time like that, and i think it would've been a little better if they instead focused it on the alternative universe stuff because i still personally find it quite blurry, and i think that this needed extra exposition, not the road that we've already passed.

I'll keep saying I feel they dropped the ball in actually just telling the story. If you never played the og, I think you'd have no clue what is really going on over all. And I'd rather have had an awesome remaster with some extra side quests and games added than all these weird story changes and multiverse timeline crap, yet alone other stupid changes, such as Cid and Yuffie as examples.
Remake did a much better job comparatively than Rebirth for the story and feel of the og, but still suffers the same as Rebirth.
And most of the minigames were anger inducing to me.

In it's first day it didn't manage to outsell Tekken 8 which had just broken 2 million in sales a few days prior (Feb 26th) Fast forward to present and we still have no sales numbers and interest in the game has dropped off like a stone. No one is talking about it anymore, there's no "buzz" like at all. And then just this week industry analyst Daniel Ahmed came out and said the game is "under performing" which he was subsequently roasted for by inane fans on Twitter. While we don't have the official dirt from Square themselves available data has allowed us to ballpark Rebirth at an ugly 2.3-2.5 million copies and I doubt it's gonna move from there. Karma is a bitch aint it G?
As for your review it basically mirrors every other sensible review out there, including my own. Pretty graphics, good music, passable combat, some good character moments and world building, ETC. Story? Garbage. Pacing? Garbage. Mini games? unneeded padding. Open world Ubishit stuff? more garbage. Once you've sifted through the over abundance of empty praise and vapid "10/10 masterpiece!" reviews the consensus is pretty clear and hard to deny. The game is mid as fuck and no amount of corpo knob slobbing is gonna change that.
i did hear that sales numbers for it were significantly below part 1, which of course, would make perfect sense according to our thesis; ppl were excited about an ff7 remake, bought part 1, saw what it ACTUALLY was, and didnt return for the follow up. It would be the ultimate poetic justice if it ends up as an entirely self defeating endeavor lmao

Took em multiple releases and 3 years to hit 7 million when they were likely aiming for 10+ and beyond. Palworld they are not, BG III they are not.

They are in the original from NIBELHEIM ONWARD and are teased before anything is revealed as a creepy loose thread that helps push the story forward. They certainly aren't thrown into the early parts of the 1st disc of the game and Hojo doesn't literally spoil them the first chance he gets with some "ThEy ArE yOuR bRoThErS, cLoUd" crap. Every. Single. Plotpoint. That brought emotional weight to the original had to be either spread so thin as to be frustratingly predictable or outright undermined. For example, Dyne self-deletes in the original after a confrontation with Barrett and realizing he can't be the father Marlene needs because his hands are too stained with blood. It's an emotional moment, now he gets murdered by Shinra after an overly long and flashy battle with Barrett, followed by a goofy boss battle with Palmer, all of which absolutely undermines the tone of the original.
Shanghai Pete is right, as he almost always is. This game snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with it's arrogant, overindulgent BS. The story got fisted into oblivion. The characters were made boring or "omg so quirky" and these MFs literally sidelined the ENTIRE Cid plot with Rocket Town, arguably one of the most grounding elements of the original. Everything about the questionable morality or flawed-but-still-good characters of the original was sacrificed on the alter of greed.... and smothered in a heavy syrup of Tumblr fan-fic level writing/dialogue.

As someone new to FF7 (by the end) I enjoyed remake but I was frustrated by its time wasting, mainly the side quests. I found Rebirth to be five times worse at doing this especially with the open world map objectives and side quests. Also the story was so convoluted by the end I’ve lost all interest in the third one. I literally struggled to finish the game as well. I was getting pretty bored by chapter 10/11 and then we got the Cait Staith section, I literally had to force myself to finish it at this point. I was thinking earlier into my play of Rebirth I’ll go back and just do the main missions of both the games later down the line to see if i find them better but watching reviews has made me realise how much the game wastes your time in the main story anyway and no doubt led to me being more frustrated by the game as a whole.

Sorry that 'profit motive' stuff is for the birds man. The profit motive was what got you the original FFVII and every other game you've ever enjoyed. Being profitable and good are obviously not mutually exclusive.
Okay, SE stretched the remake to three games for profit, cool. But they could've, you know, made the extra material *good*. Added in-depth side quests that fleshed out the world and characters. Made the city more interactable. Added secrets and lore that you can only find by exploring extensively, etc.
The reason they didn't do that wasnt because of some vague profit motive. Like, you wish that was the case. That would be easy to solve. Nah, the real issue is that SE lack the talent to make a great modern RPG. End of story. Thats why almost everything not from the original is mediocre. There have been three or four recent FFs and literally none of them are ever mentioned in the same breath as the actual cutting edge RPGs like Elden Ring, Witcher 3, BotW/TotK, Baldurs Gate etc.
SE has fallen far behind.
This is the bottom line. When you compare this garbage with the likes of Baldurs Gate 3, or Divinity 2, it's not even close. Squeenix is nowhere near those games in any way looking at gameplay and story. Modern Squeenix is more action game oriented...so maybe better to compare to Elden Ring or Witcher 3. But hot damn that's even more brutal. FF10 was the last time the series was considered great. Some say FF12 but let's get real a sec..gameplay wise and storywise FF12 was medicore at best. When did FF12 come out? Well over a decade ago..almost 20 years ago I think? Squeenix has sucked for a very long time now unless you count Octopath Traveler.

The dudes in robes were in the original but I can't blame you for forgetting because they weren't used as a vehicle for an ENTIRE GAMES WORTH of plot like in Rebirth. They're failed Sephiroth copies. Shinra soilders infused with Jenova cells like Cloud that Sephiroth can control for some dumb reason. I really couldn't believe how much Afterbirth's plot was just following them.

It sure is fun though. Combat is excellent. Just running around the regions and fighting fiends was a great time. In 300 hours I did everything. Platinum, then just screw around being OP and killing everything, replay the story and sidequests all over again once more and finally become satisfyingly bored. I had a great time.

Yeah, I can see why a lot of people might hate it. But damn to me this is one of the best games I played and who knows maybe I just have bad taste lol for me it felt like being a kid again and getting lost in a world. I didn't need to play the story because the journey was the story and the minigames also had cute interactions among team members so that was always a treat. I see it as this game really needed to sell the bond of the team because of the 3rd game. We know the story, I just want to sink deeper into the character interactions but man I loved it.
Anyone who dislikes the game/minigames/moments are totally valid, but I sit here and hope the 3rd game is bigger with more towns, more minigames and more character drama among each other lol just can't think of a moment where I was bored, whereas in ff16 I would fall asleep or need a break cuz I was tired. I think its cool though, more diversity in games. We need the ff16s and ff7rs.

F these remakes. I didn't touch em. I played FF15 boy band edition, I knew where Squeenix was going back then. No you idiots I don't want to play a damn action game. I want a turn based RPG. Octopath Traveler (also Squeenix) is far more in line of what I want. Pretty graphics do not replace gameplay. And by the way FF7 was never the best of the Final Fantasy series, it was always a confusing mess in terms of storytelling. It was also a 3 man party, dumbed down gear system, a massive downgrade from previous entries esp FF6. Final Fantasy's gameplay didn't get good again until FF9 and FF10 with the character swapping mid fight. But yeah when I look at the original FF7 vs these remakes there's no contest, FF7 is a turn based RPG for me it's always gonna be the better game for that alone compared to the remakes. Don't call these remakes RPGs, they are not.

I watched this video to get out of an echo chamber of great praises of this game unfortunately all I found is just a bad review I agree the multiverse timey wimey stuff isn’t needed the game itself is aware of that because 95% of the game is a love letter to the original with expansions of lore there in the multiverse stuff doesn’t kick in till literally the last chapter and on a second play through you have the option to skip the Zack interlude segments. The card game IS NOT REQUIRED to complete you can very much ignore it (it’s an incredible card game btw). And while this game is not super difficult you cannot get through it by just mashing square with cloud UNLESS you put it in the easiest difficulty that sounds like a you problem the game actively encourages you to swap between your party members. And I can agree the cait sith box throwing was dumb
Complain way too much , the vacuum part and plug in takes a minute and you see it twice. Yeh the box part is terrible but you get a series of great boss fights next. Games like this come once in a while. We’re getting a lot of great ff7 content to last us a a while and the way the fanbase complains is too much. Also why would they kill cloud this early
