Wood Turning a Brown Mallee Spiky Dish

- Super hard wood, spiky alien landscape looking on the outside, and gorgeous burly grain patterns inside highlighted by the contrasting sapwood.
All that sounds like a nice place to drop your keys and pocket change...or at least that's what I've tried to do here.
Brown Mallee is a timber native to Australia. Super hard and dense, and very expensive, lol...but it was a fun turn. I hope you enjoy!
I took a break for a couple months. Needed it for various reasons, not the least of which was some much-needed work around the house and property. Still lots to do. I'll video the more interesting stuff if you'd like me to.
I want to give a special shout out to those of you that took the time to check on my well being during my absence. I appreciate all of you. I had some negative types contact me as well, and I wish them all the best too. I'm keeping things positive. - Розваги
Beautiful dish Rod. I really missed you and checked every week to see if you had out a new video. For those who got mad at you for taking a break, I think they are very childish. Welcome back.
I sure appreciate that, Jean. I put a message out through UA-cam a few weeks ago, but apparently very few of my subscribers saw it...YT is a hard nut to crack. Agreed, but I'm focused on the folks like you, and I appreciate you very much!
Yeah. I also am glad to see a new project from you Rod. But I'm also glad that you got some R&R! Good for you! More people need to learn that rhythm.
Still others need to learn that everyone else does not owe them every thing they want when they want it. Blessings brother!
So glad you’re back. A break is always a healthy thing. You are as talented and creative as ever !
Thanks for your kindness! Always appreciated.
Your videos are a gift to the serious subscriber. I appreciate every one. Thanks so much for all you do!
Your art is worth waiting for no matter how long. A week, a month or a year. Your love of your craft pours out of every video.
I personally understand, and glad you're back! And glad that all is well. 👍👍
Keep'em Sharp!
I appreciate it!
I was out in the yard playing with the baby geese today and it occurred to me I hadn’t seen you in a while. I sent a short prayer hoping you and your wife are well. And here you are! You’re right, too much negativity in the world. We appreciate the gifts you share when you share them. God bless you Rod!
I loved those photos you posted on FB, Danella! Precious! My wife has been excited over the past few days as well, with our friendly Canada Goose couple that are walking their fuzzy little youngsters up to our bird feeder a few times a day now. fun time of the year 😊
Mr. Humphrey can't imagine anyone saying anything negative about you. I love your work, it is a God given talent. So please keep on making beautiful pieces of art and sharing with us. God bless and keep you.
Taking a break is somewhat needed at times. With the way the world is today, a break is always a good thing. For those that care more about a video then how you are, well they need to take a break and contemplate what kind of a human being they really are. Thank you so much for the video. Fantastic and very beautiful piece. Semper Fi!
Nice to see you haven’t lost your touch, Rod! You did the burl Justice. ❤️ Hugs to Susan!
Thank you so much, my friend!
Hi Rod don't listen to people, I love your work and enjoy watching you and listen to your voice. It is very calming. The platter you made is fantastic.
I don’t know anything about wood turning but I love watching your videos because of your great work.
Everybody needs to take a break from time-to-time - it's healthy. I'm glad you enjoyed your time away, and I'm also glad you're back. Beautiful dish!
Everyone needs a break every now and then to rejuvenate their minds and body. I'm glad you are back making videos of some beautiful pieces of art. That is a very nice bowl that you did. Take care and God bless!
Beautiful piece, so glad you are back, and your response to the negativity tickled this old veteran's heart!
So glad your alright and everyone needs to just take a break from the routine. The bowl is beautiful as is all your turnings
My wife and I are glad to see you back. Beautiful plate! Good work!
Well, if you hadn't told us it was wood, I would have thought it was a polished piece of coral or stone. Beautiful markings (still trying to think of it as 'grain'!) and a very handsome dish.
You've been sorely missed, Rod, and I'm so glad to see you back. But please don't ever feel you have to justify your absences. Every video---and hours of your time---that you share with us is a gift (not an obligation on your part) that your true fans, followers and admirers greatly appreciate. With every good wish for your health and contentment from London, England.
Beautiful piece, glad you are back. Anyone who doesn't understand that things need to be done can go watch a video about sewing curtains or something !! You do what you need to, we will be here !!👍👍👍👍

Glad to see you back and everything well. As far as the negative people. Never mind, I don’t need negative people anyway. I love your beautiful work.♥️👍🏼
Artists make and share things at their own time! I don't understand why people who don't see that even bother.
Unsubscribe! Not in a thousand years!!!
I'm glad you're fine, though...
As for the piece, spectacular! The contrast between your perfect finish and the primitive look is simply genius!
I appreciate your understanding very much! Thank you!
Welcome back, glad you OK, thank you for your Service! Don't worry about the haters.................................be safe!
Glad you were able to step away and so happy for your return. God bless. Great video and project. Psalm 139.

Glad to hear you are OK that is all that matters. It’s great to see your woodworking skills again as I enjoy the time spent watching.

Good morning, Rod. "Slow and steady wins the race." I have been checking every Friday morning and smiled this morning. You choose a gorgeous wood and turned a very special bowl. Well done, my brother. I haven't been back to the shop for a while but hope to soon. Great scripture. Peace to you. Semper Fidelis
I'm very glad to see another video. I was concerned you weren't feeling well or something else.
It's a relief to have the master back, turning wood and okay.
I like the ruggedness of the look of this bowl. I haven't seen another like it.
We're glad to see you back. Breaks are needed and necessary but we were worried about you! Welcome home.
As expected, another fantastic looking project. So glad you are in good health. Thanks Tim

I've been struggling myself recently and I'm ashamed to admit I didn't really notice you were away. I'm glad the break worked for you though, we all need it sometimes. Anyway you owe us nothing, we don't pay for a service, we enjoy your content. If that content takes a week, month, or year to come I'll be here to watch it when you upload! Take care of yourself, and anything you choose to upload will be of interest to me 😊
God-bless you and I'm glad you're back
Hi Rod, I hope the time off has helped with the contemplation of what you mentioned you where going through in a prior video.
So glad to see you back
BTW over here in Western Australia they used to use malley for fence posts back in the 1800"s and early 1900s
As it was so resilient
In places you still see some of the original posts still holding fences up
Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you, Tony! Wow, it seems crazy to use mallee for fence posts, lol... but, local resources. It would be fun to see one of you turners from down under use and old fence post for a project.
@R Humphrey I have seen some of the posts used in turning some years ago when I visited my sister down in Albany, Western Australia on our south coast, from memory the guy made a few lamp bases out of them, they looked and felt fantastic (I asked permission to touch)
Yes it seems sacralage to use what is local in one country where that timber was/is plentiful to another country where that timber is rarely and only expensively seen.
For example have you heard of jarrah?
( Eucalyptus marginata
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_marginata?wprov=sfla1 )
South West of WA is the only place in the world where it natively grows
My house is timber framed and has 6in x 3/4 tongue and groove flooring throughout
All in jarrah, even here nowadays, if you could buy such from a timber yard here
It would probably cost as much as a house to purchase
It has become one of those Timbers sort out as only the rich can afford mainly now
And it does make amazing polished floorboards a deep golden honey reddish timber
My floorboards are hidden under carpet and lino for now
Maybe one day when I win lotto....
It was cut extensively in the 1800"s and through to about 1970's when not only man but dieback caused a lot of damage, I know of a few trees around here but you have to be attentive to find them
As you can see in the wiki link above it was even used as fencing, also railway sleepers,
For Jetty construction, houses and so on
A truly amazing timber.
I won't tell you about our sandalwood industry that sell the timber to Asia for incense
😁 You can discover that yourself 🤔🤔
Good to see you back Rod you have been missed mate
Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
I am glad you are okay. I always enjoy your work and videos. Stay healthy and have fun. Take care.
We all need Break Rob. Life is too short for negative people. I love your video content you put out. That is a beautiful piece. God Bless. Tell your lovely wife Belated Happy Mothers day.

Thank you kindly, Joyce!
Glad to see you back. Beautiful bowl.
Like you said everyone needs a break now and again.
Sometimes taking a break is absolutely necessary for one reason or another. Glad to see you are well. Fantastic piece of wood! You did it justice. Pretty.
Great piece of work. For those who might unsubscribe, their loss. Glad you are back.
I am also glad you're back Rod. That is one stunning dish. 👏👏👏👏
Thank you kindly 😊
Welcome back Rod. Glad you took a break to reload all that energy you put into the channel. The Mallee is simply beautiful and a great place to drop your keys when you get back into the house. I can do all things [i]through Him who strengthens me. Phil 4-13.
Thank you kindly, and well said!
Beautifully done Rod. Glad to see you back in the shop.
as an aussie im quite partial to mallee burls. i really like what you did with this one, showed off all the gorgeous colour and grain while keeping the spikes ❤❤
Thank you very much! Out of curiosity, are they pretty expensive there as well? I understand the costs of harvesting/shipping/stocking and all, but am wondering where the prices are down under...
@@RHumphrey not as expensive no. I would have paid maybe $25 for the piece you had
I don't really understand why those people sending you such asinine demands think they have any entitlement in making them.
You're the one kindly sharing your talent for other people's enjoyment.
For what it's worth, you have my appreciation and admiration. 😉
So happy to see a new video from you. The bowl is very beautiful. Great job.
Beautiful dish! And I'm glad you are back, Rod. 💜
Glad you're back, and that you enjoyed time for yourself.
Great work Rod 👏! Glad to see you back! I know what you mean about a break. Even though I don't have a UA-cam channel I was on my lathe all the time it started getting a little boring so I took a break. Now I'm back at it a little and enjoy it more. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
Wow. When you put the finish and saw the grain just pop out. Excellent work. It is really good to see your videos again. I hope your break was good. Your artistry is amazing.
Glad you are back from a well deserved break. Have never seen that wood before, but you can sense its hardness by the sound from the tools. Very nice piece, thanks for sharing.
Rod,
A most excellent turning! Easy to see why you only had to give it a light sanding; that wood is so hard that your tools were polishing it as you turned! Many thanks for showing us your work. I’m happy you took a break, refreshment is necessary for both the inner and outer man.
Keep the aspidistra flying!
Paul
Nice to hear you had a productive sabbatical and it’s so nice to see you back doing some watering
Great to see you back we all need a break to catch up every once in a while I wnjoy the great work you do and by the way beautiful piece of wood 🪵

Hi Rod...beautiful piece... glad your ok...stay safe...press on😎 Joe
Thank you, Joe
Gorgeous wood and bowl Rod. Glad to have you back. Semper Fi
I love the Malley. I'm an other Australian that thinks there are so many things you can do with a piece of Malley, if your tools are sharp enough😎. I can wait (sometimes impatiently) for the things you show and teach use by example. 👍
Much appreciated! 😊
That's an interesting piece of wood Rod I notice is extremely hard to nice job on it. Glad to see you back I know about having to do things around the house that's what I've been doing myself. Glad you're well God bless you Semper Fi.
Thank you, my friend! lol, still so much to do...
So good to see ya back!! I pray you are well and doing good! God Bless!
These Australian burls are beautiful. Well done. Good to see you back.

🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸SEMPI FI🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Beautiful piece. Glad to hear you again. Be blessed.
Thank you! You too!
Rod, I find it beyond ridiculous that someone would threaten to unsubscribe because YOU didn't put out content for THEM. I watch your channel because, as a amatuer turner, it's my privilege to watch you work, and teach me something along the way. I don't have a right that you're entitled to meet, and I'm sorry that some have made you feel that way. You deserve better for all you have given us.
Glad too see you back and Healthy . Love the work that you do! keep it up
Nice dish, glad you you are back. Everyone needs a break from time to time. Take care 👍👍
Nice to have you back. I hope you enjoyed your break. And that bowl/tray is just gorgeous!!
