  • A momentary lapse in concentration and it is easy to get hurt, learn from my mistakes. Woodturning burls is always an interesting proposition especially elm burr. You have to adapt to the state of the wood and overcome many hidden problems. How did I get on with this one? Watch and find out

Nothing more fun than seeing someone's vision come to fruition. That burl is so beautiful on its own, you gave it just enough to reveal it. Good reminder about safety too! Glad you weren't seriously hurt.

I’m sorry you hurt your thumb making such a beautiful piece, but I am glad that you took ownership of the mistake that got you there, and used the incident as a good reminder of basic safety both to yourself and those of us in your audience. That is how you take some positive from a negative. Well done, sir.

You have the ability to look at the finished piece and work backward. I did that in my trade and it served me well. ps, you have some balls to do the thin and odd work. The grain pattern on this piece is outrageous.

Thanks Leigh, I started the channel on March the 16th last year and it's been an amazing journey, I have had a lot of luck along the way and I work hard to keep improving the quality (filming, lighting, editing etc). I also try hard to find interesting pieces of wood to turn, I have hundreds of standard blanks but they are not as much fun to turn and not as interesting to watch. If you ever have any ideas or suggestions please let me know. All the best and thanks again, Mike

Not much the doctor could do except clean and bandage it. I started not to go because I knew he couldn't do much for it. Hello Mike. Now that one turned out to be a real treat! The wood is beautiful. Thank you for including your “mishap”. So much woodturning is shown in a way that makes it look a lot safer than it actually is. A timely warning to us that nasty accidents can, and do, happen. But I am glad yours wasn’t too bad and you can go off to enjoy your holiday.

Really nice piece, Mike. I retrieved 2 rather large burls from a tree the neighbor was cutting limbs from. Each is roughly 100 pounds. Obviously, I need to cut those down to size to let dry. They're about 3 feet long right now. I bet I could get several plates and bowls out of it all.

I was daft enough once to try and drill on my drill press without clamping useing a forstner , (never again ) , the elm looks great ive got loads from a tree hit by lightning donkeys years ago and made some serving boards , and bowls i had to seal all the tiny swirling holes with resin , but wow they do look nice , well done Mike another lovely peice 👏👏👏

Thanks for sharing this project with us. I'm working on a very shallow piece of spalted liquidamber. It's rather hairy turning, when the piece starts to resemble an airplane propeller, especially as it whisks past, in a blur, near your hands! I've decided to finish sanding the back by hand, as my hands are more important than my pride (I don't have a drill for sanding: Brace and bit don't quite do it!)
    Well done, brave man!

Gorgeous piece of burl. The still at the end shows the wonderful grain and burl "eyes" very well.
I was expecting you to take the piece to the drill press for drilling the flat. My heart sank when you approached the piece with a large Forstner bit in a hand-held drill. You were fortunate with only a cut which required a bandaid and not stitches. Such incidents happen in a flash.
I was hoping the wings would hold up. Good call not to make them too thin, too easy for the centrifugal forces to causes things to fly off.
It is always amazing to see the transformation of the wood grain when a finish is applied.
    Well done as usual.
    Dave.

Thanks Dave, at the present time I do not have a drill press but hopefully that will be sorted soon. I probably should have been looked at but I just nipped to the chemist at lunchtime and got some steri strips to hold it together, it was a stupid mistake but it's not my first. The platter came out nice, I would have loved to have given it more shape but the wood was just not there to do it. Amazing grain though. Until next time, Mike
