I find this one to be very unique. And that gift you received from your friend was a work of glory. I love how you demonstrate the concept of creation and give honor to God ❤
Greeting from Humboldt County California. Excellent turning. Glad you had the mask as redwood is a fine dust. Hauled thousands of board feet back in my log truck driving days in the 70’s. Some of the lightest loads but it could get extremely heavy, 114,000# was the biggest I weighed. And that was 2-20 ft.long butt cuts. Always time well spent watching your channel.
Looked like an ambitious project. Quite beautiful wood and design; your gift was quite exquisite, too. Can you describe what redwood smells like? Scent is such a big part of an experience; somehow, I think that it would be more subtle than pine or cedar? No, I’m not weird, just like to incorporate as many of my senses as I can. 😊
Thanks very much! I wanted to maximize the wood in that one board so I took it as far as I could 😊. I have a bad sense of smell, but I just brought a bad of these fresh shavings to my wife for her opinion, and she says it smells very pleasant, like fresh honey. Great question!
This is so beautiful and masterful. I am otherwise speechless. You are blessed and now so are we who get to watch projects of this level. Thank you for using your talents! And thank you for sharing them with us!
Good evening, Brother. Wow, this is a gorgeous vase. My brother Kenny and I watched your video together. He found your work to be very informative as you described each step. I agree with his observation and loved watching the shavings coming off your sharp tools. Your video was very well done. I'm going to share it with a close friend. Excellent scriptures. A handshake and a cup of coffee can do wonders for a guy. God bless and Semper Fi
Stunning vase, I love redwood it's so beautiful you really nailed the shape with this piece it would look so stylish on a large dining table or a large side board. Hope you and Susan are safe and well.😘😘🙏🙏
There was 23 of us in the CORPS back then. Six of us on our first enlistment were needed because of VIET NAM. The other seventeen were career oriented. We spent almost two years in school with the last year at IBM in civilian school. After that for me it was three months at 29 palms and then 19 months in VIETNAM. The CORPS had four installations in country with some crossover with comms battalions. If you would like to hear more let me know how to private message you. As an old computer tech I claim ignorance these days. I get in less trouble that way. JERRY@@RHumphrey Cancel Reply
This project was very pretty and I love how you took the raw wood and worked into a wonderful finished item. I am a long time watcher. I love how a piece of wood can become a thing of beauty. This is something enjoy watching but can not do my own wood work to sight issues. My fine vision is gone, but I can still see the wonderful items you produce. Please continue to do so on your schedule I will wait for more when You have the time
Welcome back Rod. I have to say that's probably your finest project to date. It's simply stunning. That is a wonderful gift you received. As you know I live in Ireland and recently bought the Wood Edge segment device all the way from the USA. I haven't used it yet but I can tell it's of the finest quality. Will be in touch soon. Semper Fi
Such an amazingly beautiful piece. I can't imagine the amount of hours it took you to create such a masterpiece from a single piece of redwood. Every joint has a bit of a reddish highlight as if you'd stained the pieces before gluing them together. Maybe that's just the nature of the redwood. But it makes for an amazing design accent through and through. This truly some masterful work. You outdid yourself. Just beautiful!
Thank you very much! It did eat up some time, but it was the type of time that I absorbed into and didn't even notice while the hours passed. Good stuff. As for the red between each segment, I was very happy to see it happen. The glue picked up just enough of the powdery redwood dust to give that highlight. Happy accident! Thanks again!
I have always enjoyed watching your videos. You have made some awesome pieces and paintings and such, but I really love this one. It's larger, very well designed, and that redwood is so gorgeous that it makes the segments really stand out. Thank you so much for the video. God bless!
Wonderful to see you back on the lathe Rod!!! What a stunning project from amazing artist. You were my inspiration to buy a lathe a few years ago. Hadn't turned anything since my high school days. Thanks again for sharing and the inspiration.
That looks amazing 🤩. I know you said it was a vase, but to me it looks like a massive goblet. I like it a lot. Another masterpiece added to the rest you have already created. 👍
That may be your best project yet, Rod! The video edit was perfect. The pacing, voice over, close camera angles and your precise turning were delightful to watch. Always glad when I get to see you create.
Really beautiful piece Rod. I think this is the first time I have seen you use the steady rest. I don't see how you can do this big of a piece without it. Great job.
You always have beautiful pieces!! This was unique way of turning this piece. Sorry I missed you and your wife when I was there visiting the family. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!❤
Absolutely beautiful, Sir. You were missed very much but happy to know you are OK. God has truly gifted you and us with your art. Blessings to your friend who is obviously an extremely talented woodworker as well. Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family and Edgar, too
Very nice rod.. you have more patience than me with the segmentation but I definitely do agree with you about finishing the inside as you glue deep hollowing something like that would be a nightmare. Nice to see you using your steady rest let me know how it has worked out for you. See you soon!
Thanks very much, Roger! Carter makes pretty nice tools, this steady rest is very solid... pricy, but worth my investment even though I rarely use it, lol
I really enjoy your videos. Your beautiful turnings insoire me to try some of the magnificent bowls and somehave been nice enough to give as gifts to friends. As of late, I have been working with my grandson to provide some instruction and what limited knowledge I learned and am teaching him that long sleves, watches, bracelets, and rings are not to be worn when working with tools such as the lathe, but he sees that you wear these items and I am asked about them. I was wondering if you could say a few words to the newer turners out there about this?
Thank you very much, I appreciate that! Regarding the ring and watch/bracelets, and even long sleeves, I can't argue with your safety concerns. I'll say that we are all responsible for our own safety and protective measures, though, and you should apply whatever levels you feel necessary. I say this with respect. It is very common for turners to wear gloves and other items, but to be wary at the same time of hand and tool placement.
Wow Ron that was beautiful work there buddy and the gift your opo gave you was amazing, great to hear that squadies keep in touch, Im an X Royal Marine Commando from Scotland. Where can I purchase that wedge Pro as it look great and easy to use. well done on the turning god bless you and family,

Thank you very much! I want to get back to that, though I'm a bit "gun-shy" as I took a beating from a few ungrateful types. I'm not over it yet... It's a shame, as it was something I truly enjoyed doing.

It would certainly be a highlight piece of my short turning experience. I'll check out your dust mask. My rubber mask is effective but sometimes gets hot and sweaty from the moisture in my breath.
I love this one,,,I sure would like to know how much pressure you put into the tools that cut the piece of wood.? Doesn't look like your very gentle with it but I can't tell.
Fantastic work Ron, I have 2 questions for you 1 how do you make sure that the rings are centred, 2 I would like to make a bowl squashed > C < shape but am unsure as how to. Any information would be gratefully received
Thanks very much! When I add rings while the base is mounted on the lathe, it's just by feel with fingertips. For a C shaped bowl, you can see how it's done in this video when I add the second group of rings. it's just undercutting, whether with a segmented piece or a single chunk. I've made quite a few of them because it's a bowl shape I favor. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much, Darlou, that means a lot to me! 😊
That is some vase, Rod! The segments of wood look like blocks of stone and the whole piece has a feel of Ancient Rome about it.
Thank you very much, Jill! I love that thought!
this is a beautiful please of turning Rod, it is so good to have you back mate.
Thanks, my friend!

Really beautiful piece Rod. I think this is the first time I have seen you use the steady rest. I don't see how you can do this big of a piece without it. Great job.
Thank you very much, Doug! I've done a couple vases without a steady rest... it's a dangerous/nervous game, lol!

Thank you so much, Vickie!

What a gorgeous piece of work! Segmenting cuts down on much of the wood waste too. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving
Thanks you! I really does cut down on the waste... but I've still got a nice pile of shavings under my lathe, lol! (I'll put them to good use)
Great project, nice to see you turning again

Really nice, Rod. I was wondering if there was a method to your madness on lining up the joints between rings with different number of segments.
Bill
Thank you, Bill! For the off numbered match ups, I just try to offset the joints as evenly as I can.
That is gorgeous! I put segmented rims on my bowls so I could feel your pain during glue-up. That is lots of work but the result is well worth it. One nit: the grain on the base does not match the rest of the piece and looks out of place to my eye. Forgive my criticism. You've produced a wonderful and shapely vessel. It would certainly be a highlight piece of my short turning experience. I'll check out your dust mask. My rubber mask is effective but sometimes gets hot and sweaty from the moisture in my breath.
Thank you, Paul! Yep, but it's from the same board so it fit the purpose. All good, all opinions are welcome. 😊
I love this one,,,I sure would like to know how much pressure you put into the tools that cut the piece of wood.?
Doesn't look like your very gentle with it but I can't tell.
Thanks very much. Very gentle, actually. Even my more aggressive cuts, with the larger shavings, are more tool angle than pressure.
