In this video I make 16, 24, and 32 segment count rings using the Wedge Pro. Super easy and safe.
And then I turn a pretty candy dish using an unknown wood base, figured maple, and Sapele. Flashy from top to bottom!

As many of us, over the years I have made several wedgie sleds, just yesterday I set up my sled to start making some rings for Christmas presents. Im really impressed with this demonstration. Its time to purchase a new wedgie sled, I really like this. Thank you Rod for demonstrating this!! I may share your video on the website to show others this new device.

I've made my own in the past as well, and seen many at woodworking shows, but none compare to this one, not even the Rockler sled. I don't have a dog in the fight though, not affiliated or sponsored. I am surprised that you have so positively reviewed this product. It works fine, yes, but... My two issues with the piece are, first, the price, and second, the unnecessary complication of the tool. To support a doctor friend of mine in his fundraisers for humanitarian work around the world, I send him about a hundred bowls a year; most of them segmented at 24, and have for the past eight years have used one commercially produced segment tool to do the job. The tool to which I refer is currently $49 , and a whole set of 16, 18, 20, 24, 32, 36, 40, 48 segment wedges is $99. With a bit of basic skills in the shop a relatively new amateur can make the sled and stop for less than $10 in material. My set up is safe, and actually quite a bit faster to use. There are videos showing in simple detail how to construct the necessary sled and stop, and a clever online search will quickly lead one to the product I mention. I will omit the actual brand name, so as to not be removed for inappropriate advertising.

Thank you kindly! They really are nice and tight, and even in person the joints are mostly invisible. The figured grain helps with that, but I was legitimately impressed.
I received mine last week, I can’t believe how accurate this wedge pro is and I love the safety of fingers protected from blade. If you love segmented turning as I do I would incourage you to purchase one. Awesome sled 👍

As a long time segmenter and user of the wedgie sled I must say your new sled is quite interesting. I can see why you are impressed by it. If I were just getting ready to begin segmenting I would certainly consider this new product. However at $345 it is a bit expensive. One can make a wedgie sled and purchase the wedges for a $100 or so. Which ever direction I were to go I would also purchase some software to go along. My software choice is Woodturner Pro. It allows you to design your project and provides all the calculations required for creating the perfect segments. BTW, the bowl you created for this video is beautiful. Nothing like a nice piece of maple for an outstanding finish. You certainly did this piece proud. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Hi Rod, I really like the sled. It looks so well made and with all the angles and number of segments already there for you makes it so easy for someone to make segmented rings.
It is just under £300 here in the UK so is a bit out of my price range for the amount of segmenting I do.

What a great new helper. Thank you for your explanations and showing how to use this tool. What I like best is the safety which this tool gives while cutting. And I always Like veryuch what you turn. Of course the segmented bowls are the "Mercedes" under your objects for me. Especially with all that preparative work. The more detail the prettier as always... And that pen got me thinking of the nut cracker... Dont know why...

That Wedge Pro certainly eliminates the math required and, more importantly, eliminates the trial and error of getting the cut angles just right.
And nothing beats a drum sander for getting the glued segment layers even anf flat.

It’s s great tool. It’s also obscenely expensive. I’ve never had issues with my wedgie sled. But I can also appreciate having a well made and designed tool. I guess it’s whatever works for you.

Nice looking bowl. Keep it out of moisture and temperature extremes though, such a large solid base has been known to cause cracking due to movement across the grain going contrary to the rings movement. Best ways to avoid problems is a smaller solid base or a floating base. Still a fine example of a first segmented bowl.
Thanks very much! This base didn't end up as a big thick clunker, just so you know, lol, and this is FAR from my first segmented bowl. Been segmenting for years. It was my first one using this new Wedge-Pro sled, though. I appreciate your comment and that you've shared your personal experience. 😊

I personally prefer the two fence style of sled as i don’t need to flip the piece of wood. But that is definitely a well made tool. There are many nice sled designs out there so maybe you could show others styles in the future. Just a thought.
Mike is developing a two-fence sled as well, just fyi. I see advantages to both, in that when you flip the wood it gives opportunity for a bit more grain flash... or conversely, with no flip the grain can look completely uniform. I appreciate the suggestion, and probably would do so. I've use home-made wedge sleds, cut segments with a table saw, mitersaw (chopsaw) and band saw. This is the most precise so far. Not trying to sell, just saying. Thanks very much! 😊
@@RHumphrey precision will come from a lot of factors of course. A good 80 tooth blade is important as well. I think once you get your sled dialed in you can cut very precise segments. Thanks.

Thank you Rod for highlighting this new jig. I am super impressed with your finished bowl, specifically the close-up of the figured maple rings. I didn’t see one gap between any of the segments in any of the 3 rings. Maple (light colored woods in general) will show-off a gap between really easy. So your bowl with those segments right off the saw was very impressive. Plus I love the safety aspect of this jig. How much is that worth when cutting hundreds and thousands of segments. I did my first segmented bowl last year and went quite intrepid for my first. But I made my own cutting sled, pretty much dedicated to 16 segment rings. I managed to get it dialed in perfectly without too much initial error. But this wedge pro looks pretty slick!
I wouldn't mind having one of those.

It's not needed, it's overkill. I can cut all the segments and not have to keep reaching in and taking the pieces out of the way. Build a ramp next to the blade, and use a wedge sled. Can make for 10 dollars. I made three sleds when making them have set for different angles.
Save your money. Use a digital ruler to set them.

It looks like a great tool but the price is much for what it is. There is maybe $40 worth of plastic in it and a couple screws. I think I will make my own.
lol, $40 worth of plastic and a couple screws... Yes, it's expensive, but that's not an accurate description at all. Not sure why the negativity, but have fun making your own, there's lots of turners and other woodworkers that do. Send pics when you get it done, I enjoy seeing what my fellow woodworkers are making 😊
