Woodturning a Pretty Bowl In Tribute

- Using wood gifted to me by two long time subscribers, I turned a bowl with a bit more meaning and symbolism this week. I'll talk about it just a bit, but mostly this is about turning wood and creativity.

Gorgeous. My father was in the Army And the Navy. He always hated being thanked for his service. He said he didn’t do anything million’s of others didn’t do. He threw himself on a land mine and saved many people. He came home alive but without his legs. I admire anyone that has served, are serving, or will serve our wonderful country. I pray for all the families that lost loved ones. I pray for the ones risking everything daily so that I can sit here and have the freedom to say what I feel. Our country is an amazing place and it’s because of all of our service men and women. God bless you all. And God bless you, Rod, for sharing your beautiful work. I don't know that I take the same symbolism you intended, but for me this is a beautiful piece. Despite anything I may have said in the past regarding our wars, I will forever remember and honour the fallen. This weekend doesn't have the same meaning to us in the UK but this video still serves as a beautiful reminder. Thank you sir, it was a pleasure to watch.
True, your Remembrance Day is Nov 11, but It's a day we should remember our allies' sacrifices as well. I appreciate your sentiments regarding the wars, (whether we agree or disagree is not important) and appreciate that you remember the fallen even more. Thank you!

Oh Rod that is gorgeous! I AM SO THANKFUL that I live in a free country and we honor the fallen in our house also. From a family of Army vets God Bless and Thank you Sir for your service to our country, God blessed you that you got to come home. My prayers for all the young men who didn't make that return and for their families. My Uncle never came home from Korea he is my hero.

Joyce, this sweetgum tree blew down in a hurricane and sat in the woods for almost two years. It's the spalting (when a fungus gets into dead or dying wood and leaves those lines) that makes it so amazing. It was going to go to the landfill to be mulched and I couldn't stand the thought so I had the tree servicer drop off a log or two to my house. He ended up bringing me 5 logs. I just had to send some to Rod, knowing he would make something beautiful.

As a fellow resident of Chesterfield, although in my case Chesterfield , Derbyshire, UK, that is a beautiful piece with a poignant meaning ty Rob.

Thank you Ron. My son is currently serving in the Australian Army. Here we have Remembrance day on 11 Nov and ANZAC Day on 25 Apr where we remember those who served and those serving. Although I never served myself, both days make me cry. The sacrifice made by those people is immense, and I thank them all for the lifestyle and freedoms we enjoy.

Rod, I'm not only thrilled that you were able to use the sweetgum I sent you but especially honored that you used it for this special Memorial Day bowl. That means a lot.
It turned out beautiful, as your work always does. And the shavings coming off looked like party favors or, possibly, 4th of July fireworks (hitting two holidays).
Can you believe that those sweetgum logs were destined for the landfill to be mulched? I had to rescue them. They not only became beautiful bowls, platters, and pens but also an amazing tongue and groove ceiling for a mountain cabin.

Good morning, Rod.
The traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall was in our area recently and my son and I took time to visit. It was a time of quiet reflection. 58,000, a number. However, when a person sees 58,000 names etched in a memorial the number is overwhelming.

Yes, I understand the meaning and symbolism of the bowl. I visited the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola a few years back and while I was there I stopped in the cemetery . Rows and rows of gleaming white crosses. I can never express my feelings but it is something that will never leave me. We owe so much.

It is Memorial Day and I watched your video. From the thumbnail picture, I knew you would be using the Americana Spectraply as a nice tribute piece. What I didn't get was the use of the wenge and bloodwood. Until, as you said, at the end of the video. When I saw that stripe, I immediately teared up thinking about the sacrifice of our veteran's who didn't return. My dad served in WW II and made it home, and, on rare occasions, he would mention some of his buddies who didn't return. More recently, the son of one of my high school classmates was killed while serving in Afghanistan. I can never thank enough all of our veterans for fighting for our freedom. Today, I give thanks and think about the TOTAL sacrifice so many made. Thanks for producing the bowl and sharing the video. You really got me with it.
