As the father of a child with autism, i i know that people with autism can do great things. but many are raised in such a way they never get the chance. They are coddled, and never pushed to overcome their differences, and instead, are allowed to stagnate. Like any child, if if they are not pushed to find something they enjoy, that they can succeed at, they will never find anything that works for them.
Fr if im remembering correctly that was the patients dad. I actually screamed when i first heard him say that. The episode is pretty interesting though he ends up learning more about how autism is a spectrum not one set way of how things are and also that his son is capable of a lot more he originally thinks. I definitely recommend the show in general but this episode was especially good
One of my brothers is autistic. He is highly fact focused. He works in IT and is the leader of the IT apartment by now. He never was in a relationship but has quite a few friends. And I have psychological problems. Somehow funnily my non normally functioning brain and his non normal functioning brain are wired in a way that we have like a build in 'translation' for each other. We both need to rant sometimes and other people have problems following then. But it just works perfectly with each other. I love how different limits of several people all in one team so often shows solutions one person alone could never think of.
The vast majority of people with autism strugle with subliminal messages (double meaning or inferrence) unless taught clearly about them. This is one of the main reason we are very fact focused and even act "weird"(i always say the exact time when someone ask it (rn 5:58) and it seem to be rare to do so). However we are very similar to dogs in the way we act. We also all have a specific skill that is the one thing we are better at than anyone
I knew i acted like a dog or a toddler more than an adult human, this explains why i felt that way I know i have autism, i have every symptom and im trying super hard to get a diagnosis as an adult because as a kid i was denied one due to my guardians believing it would mean i was retarded @hugothibodeau6137
I kept seeing stuff about the show for the longest time when I used to watch cable TV I actually had no idea the doctor had ASD because I think I was in elementary at the time and didn’t know stuff like that I did have a hunch tho while watching this that it was “The Good Doctor” but I was still trying to find a comment that confirmed it
As someone born high functioning I can relate so much to this, I've seen autistic kids over stimulated and their parents had no clue what to do. The few that listened to me said advice helped and they often calmed down. Sometimes we just need a way to direct our mind towards a calmer place, our thoughts are like a train. Trying to change course last minute derails us and stresses us out.
@@keroki932 The show would flop. Because actual autism is not nearly as dramatic as this show. Savants are rare. Most autistics fly under everyone's "autism" radar thanks to the fiction of these shows.
They’re not necessarily mentally challenged, as that would imply an absence of intelligence, which is not the case with either the doctor or the patient (the doctor coming up with an excellent idea for this patient and the patient himself counting the steps between different parts of the hospital and remembering them). However, they are disabled to some extent and are likely both misunderstood often in their daily lives. Trust me, I know
"mentally challenged" is a way of saying mentally deficient, it was used to replace the word "retarded." Not sure if you meant it that way, but I think you could say it better. He's clearly a successful doctor, I would call myself "mentally challenged" before I said that about someone like him! I don't have a great job, nor in the top of my field, nor accomplishing insane goals in my early 20s. Just average boring bear, struggling though life like everyone else. HE's a star!
Autism is more complex than that. The true way on how it work is that it lock us into a specific skill that we will be better than anyone at it at the cost of being worse at all the other skill untrelated to our specialisation. My specialisation is "analyse by observation" but i've seen some being "emotional control"(they had almost perfect control of their emotion and used it to affect other), "communication" (he was on the heavy part of the spectrum but could communicate trough body language), "designe", "memorisation" and many other. Any daily skill can end up as a skill an autist get and any rare skill like what you need to be an astronaute can also be one. The main reason we are seen as mentaly chalenged is because very fiew find their skill and even less get enough support to have a chance to learn it. I was lucky.
I say this as someone who has an autistic brother who I love more then anything, and quite possibly could be mildly autistic myself. This show does an amazing job of showing how autistic are not normal. They have certain traits and behaviors that frankly make them worse then “normal” people and we have to accept that. To put it bluntly if this guy was “normal” this would’ve been an easy test, with an easy fix. This show also shows us how this autistic doctor fails many times for not picking up on certain behaviors. Now here’s where people give me hate comments without reading the rest. Buuuut, they are also great at certain things much better then “normal” people. They’re obsessions frankly lead them to being smarter in those categories. For behaviors that they have learned to recognize they realize more things that “normal” people don’t. To everyone in the comments saying “man this is why being autistic is awesome I’m so glad he understood what others didn’t” NO! Autism sucks, it’s awful at times and frankly feels like suffering and is incredibly isolating. This is not something that should be blindly praised. Absolutely not hated but not praised either. They have incredible insights and can see amazing things that many normal people can’t, and on average I find that higher functioning autistic people are just incredibly smart, much smarter then your average joe. They’re geniuses that realize things others don’t. Being autistic isn’t a good thing. Nor is it bad. Being autistic is a unique thing with its own pros and cons. And I want people to look at it as such. Often people look at those seen as disadvantaged and blindly praise them to make up for it. Stop it, that’s not ok. Autistic people are amazing for what makes them, them. Their analyses are genius. But they also have many shortcomings behaviorally. And we need to acknowledge both.
But an autistic would know second grade English and the difference between then (a place in time) and than (a comparison between two or more things). Just saying, the algorithm should have underlined them when you wrote it, now you know why!
Don’t worry, I read the whole thing. I agree with most of it but some parts definitely sound hateful, like the “autistic are not normal” and “they have certain traits and behaviours that make them worse than normal people” for example. It sounds like you’re calling autistic people nonhuman. I get what you’re saying tho! Not trying to sound harsh :)
@@amandarose861 I totally understand what you mean by that but that’s kinda my point. Autistic people aren’t normal. Depressed people aren’t normal. People with Down syndrome aren’t normal. I’m sure as hell not normal. Normal sucks and I’ll gladly call people not normal because in many ways they’re better, and in some they’re worse. Different for every case but it’s definitely not normal. For example I have no hatred at all for people with Down syndrome but can you with a straight face tell me that they speak like a “normal” person and act like a “normal” person? Cuz no they don’t. They’re much happier, a bit hard to understand but honestly better then some peoples English and I absolutely love them. It would really be a disservice to call them normal. Hope that better gets my point across

Well yeah, people with ASD are very accomplished in a lot of cases. Asperger is an old term for autism that is not used (or should not be used) anymore as it is offensive as it's the name of a Nazi known for the murder of children.
Yes, but they don't really call it Aspergers anymore due to it being named after a ehm "german" collaborater. If you catch my drift. That's why people are trying to get it changed to something like ASD.
I've just gotten an appointment set finally for a psych eval for hopefully getting diagnosed with autism. I'm kinda hoping I do get diagnosed, it would prove a lot of words with Ava a few right about me, justify some things in my head and make me feel better. I'd just have to deal with the opinions from then on.
Doesn’t even make sense when you realize autistic doctors go through the same 10 year college courses as every other component doctor hence why I stopped watching this show, I get the point is for awareness that they aren’t lesser people and shouldn’t be treated diffrent but they just dragged it out and made it the main issue for a GOOD amount of episodes
My nephew is like this at times...I try to keep my vocabulary simple, but otherwise, treat him with patience and kindness. He appreciates it, and we've had some really amazing conversations at times. ❤!
The last sentence….. damnnnn “It’s amazing how accomplished you are with ASD”. Seriously? It sounds like tht guy is calling ppl with ASD “incompetent”….. please don’t come at me, this is only how I interpret from the sound of it
Nice to see the representation not just of proper ASD, but also the people who still just hear the name of any neurological and/or musculoskeletal disorder or syndrome and immediately think "utterly incapable of learning or thinking for themselves." Unfortunately this mindset still exists pretty commonly despite what we know now about these conditions.
Holy cow what a slap in the face competent for someone with ASD? The evil makes me wanna cry. I was trying to write ableism but spellcheck knew that I meant evil.
"For someone with ASD" Really pisses me of tbh autistic people are normal functioning people too its not our fault the world was made for just one kind of brain

What i liked about this video clip is "how do you define intelligence ?" Humans are limited when faced with this question because we limit what intelligence actually is instead of what it can be. 😉

Like any child, if if they are not pushed to find something they enjoy, that they can succeed at, they will never find anything that works for them.
@@dreamwolf7302 Yep
No way that last guy said "you're pretty smart for an autistic person" 💀💀💀
That's so disrespectful 😭
Fr if im remembering correctly that was the patients dad. I actually screamed when i first heard him say that. The episode is pretty interesting though he ends up learning more about how autism is a spectrum not one set way of how things are and also that his son is capable of a lot more he originally thinks. I definitely recommend the show in general but this episode was especially good
@@ashleyx7454 it's probably not a show for me, I can usually tell, although I'll gladly watch the UA-cam shorts I get of it lmao
“For someone with ASD”? WTH is that supposed to mean?
He’s literally a savant bro
I knew i acted like a dog or a toddler more than an adult human, this explains why i felt that way
I know i have autism, i have every symptom and im trying super hard to get a diagnosis as an adult because as a kid i was denied one due to my guardians believing it would mean i was retarded @hugothibodeau6137

Chances are, you’re autistic as well. But chances are, it was ruled out because “you’re a girl and girls don’t get autism.”
For anyone wandering this is called "The good doctor"
Thanks bro!
Thank you 👍
I kept seeing stuff about the show for the longest time when I used to watch cable TV
I actually had no idea the doctor had ASD because I think I was in elementary at the time and didn’t know stuff like that
I did have a hunch tho while watching this that it was “The Good Doctor” but I was still trying to find a comment that confirmed it
W
It was one helluva great series! I loved watching it. In a way it was a niche show kind of like House. Medicine with a “quirk”.
Dude is a way above board actor....
Spot on!
If they could be as present, and distinct!!!!!
Imagine if they actually hired an autistic actor for the role
@@keroki932 we can only dream 😢
@@keroki932 The show would flop. Because actual autism is not nearly as dramatic as this show. Savants are rare. Most autistics fly under everyone's "autism" radar thanks to the fiction of these shows.
Anthony Hopkins got his autism diagnosis shortly before he won an Oscar for Best Actor. Autistic masking is acting for hours on end every day.
Imagining an actual mentally challenged doctor being able to help normal doctors better understand mentally challenged patients is so amazing
Trust me, I know
We are NOT mentally challenged, sweetpea. We are just mentally wired differently.
Now go wash yo leg.
Damn nerds I WAS PHRASING IT SIMPLY AND POLITELY BECAUSE I COULDVE AND SHOULDVE SAID RETARDED BUT I DIDNT
The Good Doctor
Season 1 Episode 7 “22 Steps”
Thank you stranger.
He knows alot about that and it's good
I say this as someone who has an autistic brother who I love more then anything, and quite possibly could be mildly autistic myself.
@@markdarc0448 ok I get that part better now, thanks!
What about the “worse than normal” though?
as an autistic person myself, this show sucks. They should’ve hired a neurodivergent lead, not some allistic dude pretending to be autistic. Would be fun if maybe the media could stop presenting us as supergeniuses so that when we ARENT, we’re not looked down upon.
This show is called the good doctor for anyone who is wondering ❤
I know that but I just don’t know what episode
Wow. I’ve never seen this show but this is a beautiful video. I’ll have to watch the show now.
“He’s not psychotic he’s autistic” got me 😂

"I AM A STURGEON"
Love this
"Its amazing how accomplished you are with asd"
Many people have lived their lives not knowing theyre autistic and have done great things- anthony hopkins is my favorite example. A well accomplished actor, musician, and overall good human
Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton too. Autistic people have invented the two most fundamental and important theories of physics.
"where are the stones?" Thanos, asked nicely.
This is a way better way to spread this message than the one in that predators movie.
what i love about this episode is that shaun helps the kid learn to cope simply by being himself. the kid also refuses to allow anyone else to treat him except for shaun because he is the only one who understands him.

Well yeah, people with ASD are very accomplished in a lot of cases. We can complete SPECIFIC tasks better than most everyone dependant on the person and level of ASD, it’s a seriously intricate balance on brain wiring and personal interests. However, usually comes at a loss for our EQ or overstimulation of our EQ altering how we feel emotions
I love this show I have ASD and it shows even ppl with autism or other disabilities can do many great things
"It's amazing how accomplished you are for someone with ASD." I would be so mad if someone dared say that to me. 😡
Why
@@curzethemalljust because I have autism doesn’t make me less able than anyone else.
@@andrewdoesguardyes it does.
@@daxiatothemaxia4225 what? I’m literally in college studying marine biology- I’m not less than anyone here and I’m not treated as such.
@@daxiatothemaxia4225 You’re saying autistic people are less able than “normal” people yet that comment alone is proof enough that you are less able than the other guy despite him being autistic. When bro said "this patient is psychotic" first time Dr. Shaun has been fill with true rage
This scene is why i hate the show, it's such a fake representation
I went to school with a kid exactly like this so idk what you’re on about
@dyldog the interaction and recognition on Shaun's part is completely out of line with his diagnostic features

THANK YOU OMLLLLL all the comments praising it was doing my head in 😂😂 I really like Shaun but scenes like this really take me out of it. Like dude, you couldn’t have consulted a few more people?? Really???
Girly really said “oh he’s autistic? I bet he knows step-count” like hun I love you but just because YOU count steps… 😂😂. It’s an easy fix, too, and one used ALL THE TIME FOR MRIS. Let him focus on things other than scratchy fabric and loud noises and tiny metal tubes??? Are y’all THAT DUMB????
This guy seems more like a surgeon than a doctor tbh
Finally I found people that also count steps from places 😂😂

The last line made me so mad “FOR someone with ASD” he’s well accomplished PERIOD!

Such an incredibly backhanded compliment from the father.
“It’s amazing How accomplished you are with ASD.” While you have accomplished nothing
That last line was the most back handed compliment
28:46 Dylan finally getting the Anthony Bridgeton fever is so funny LOL
is ASD Asperger syndrome? my 4month old son was treated by a lead nurse who has Asperger and she was so sweet nice and didnt treat my questions like i was stupid for asking. i wondered why she would not look me in the eye n my mom told me she jad Asperger
Asperger is an old term for autism that is not used (or should not be used) anymore as it is offensive as it's the name of a Nazi known for the murder of children.
Yes it is😊
Yes, but they don't really call it Aspergers anymore due to it being named after a ehm "german" collaborater. If you catch my drift. That's why people are trying to get it changed to something like ASD.
Its AUTISM

I've just gotten an appointment set finally for a psych eval for hopefully getting diagnosed with autism. I'm kinda hoping I do get diagnosed, it would prove a lot of words with Ava a few right about me, justify some things in my head and make me feel better. I'd just have to deal with the opinions from then on.

autism spectrum disorder
Not ADD. ASD is autism spectrum disorder.
ASD = Autism Spectrum Disorder
Even after this the parents still refuse to let him work on their son
Shows you never to juge some one with asd if only. My best friends would be nicer when I’m stimming
Yall can even check the later seasons and for a decent amount of episodes that’s still the main point of drama
It’s also terrible representation.
Please bless us with with special doctors like this

The last sentence….. damnnnn “It’s amazing how accomplished you are with ASD”. Seriously? It sounds like tht guy is calling ppl with ASD “incompetent”….. please don’t come at me, this is only how I interpret from the sound of it
"How accomplished you are for someone with ASRD" is such a backhanded compliment.
As someone with autism, even though I know this is a film, I am really happy about how Murphy reacted, attempting to calm the paitent.
The fact that he helped someone like him❤❤❤...
The zing at the end and the facial expression Shaun gives just wow.
Like yea that was nice but damn ouch 😮
Holy cow what a slap in the face competent for someone with ASD? The evil makes me wanna cry. I was trying to write ableism but spellcheck knew that I meant evil.
"For someone with ASD" Really pisses me of tbh autistic people are normal functioning people too its not our fault the world was made for just one kind of brain
I've got a touch of the tism myself and I've always sworn we can notice each other from across the room. It's like some kind of radar; I've always been able to tell who has it.
What i liked about this video clip is "how do you define intelligence ?" Humans are limited when faced with this question because we limit what intelligence actually is instead of what it can be. 😉
What would happen if Dr. house and Dr. Murphy met…
Who is Dr. House
Why do people still doubt him?? Like his always right who's with me?
Here’s a message for young autistic children out there: if you think that your weird or odd because of your condition that’s not true autism doesn’t make you weird it just makes you different
