Wow! Thank you so much for supporting the Real Doctor Reacts to series. I said that if you get the grey's anatomy video to 15k likes I'll do another episode and you CRUSHED it by getting it 200k+ likes. I dove into the comments section to see what medical tv drama you wanted me to review next and it seemed like the good doctor was the obvious choice. Get ready TV Doctors, because Dr. Mike is coming for you =]
Full disclosure, I have never watched an episode of the good doctor on ABC so I decided to go ahead and start my tv medical drama review off with the first episode ( good doctor 1x01 ) of the series. I was really curious myself to see if the good doctor is a medically accurate show.
I really did enjoy this medical tv show because I think it did a lot of things well. It gave an interesting look into what life is like a for a surgeon and a resident. Being a surgical resident is not an easy job and to make the situation even more complex Dr. Sean Murphy has autism so they did a great job of breaking down these circumstances.
I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Watches The Good Doctor / Real Doctor Reacts to the Good Doctor. If you want me to continue making this tv medical drama series please like the video and leave me a comment on which medical tv show or episode you'd like for me to review next. Love you all!

@@stuff2399I use arch btw
The most unrealistic part of this show is that all the doctors spend a lot of time with their patients and even perform procedures aside from surgery. They even visit the patients as a group. In my experience it's hard to get one doctor to come and spend 5 minutes with you at a hospital, much less a group of them.
If you're in a university or large teaching hospital, a large group of doctors will come see you. I'm currently in a hospital since Sept., and the head surgeon comes with his residents to see me almost daily. Same thing happened when I was in a big university hospital in Chicago 20yrs ago. Smaller hospitals don't tend to do it. But then I seem to be a teaching case, so that's why they might be bringing all the students with.
@@erindreams5610 I see. That's awesome.
They won't usually if you don't require surgery, but that depends, sometimes they do. However, I've had three open heart surgeries at Yale (I live 10 minutes away). Before surgery you generally meet with the whole surgery team, I've ever had them come when surgery wasn't yet on the table at that point from different disciplines and meet at the same time as a group, which isn't normal but can happen if you're a patient with a lot of issues that need addessing.
yes if its a teaching hospital, most doctors group up
It depends, plenty of medical facilities with teaching facilities and what not come to you in groups. My friends have placement at a general practicioner 3-4 times a week as a 2nd year or 3rd year cant remember. I assume most people shown in the show are students in their final years of specialization as opposed to 3rd years of med

The issue I have with early intervention stuff is that it mostly teaches masking (ie looking in the eye), which is a delicate balance. Not making eye contact isn't just unnatural, it's uncomfortable. Masking takes a lot of energy which can lead to burnout, it can also prevent someone from accessing necessary support because they are deemed "lower support needs"(previously known as high functioning) the thing to remember is, 'higher functioning' doesn't mean you find it easier to deal with, it means it's easier for other people to deal with.
Edit: Spelling
THANK YOU. I'm not diagnosed yet (adult diagnosis is hard where I am) and I've masked all of my life. It is not automatically better to cater to neurotypicals. The way we exist is not wrong.
this is the best take I've seen in this comment section
Everything you said it is so true, neurodiverse people go true training to teach them how to accommodate neurotypical people so they do not feel uncomfortable.
Wow, I've never heard this definition before, but it sounds so accurate (for many other conditions as well): 'Higher functioning' doesn't mean you find it easier to deal with, it means it's easier for other people to deal with.
@astrogeek Even that kind of recommendation can do some good cause now at least one person has bothered to look up what can be done for autistic children.

I AM A SURGEON
"Someone call 911"
Never say someone. Point directly to a few people and tell them to call/get help. During a situation like that people wont take action because they are to busy staring. Which is a normal thing to do but then everyone is also busy thinking someone else is making the call
Pointing to someone directly will be more likely to get an actual result.
Good point
Once my friend passed out in a restaurant, and I looked at the guy in the booth across from me dead in the eye and said (while standing up, reaching across the table, and holding my friend up so she doesn't suffocate in her guacamole while I'm straining against a herniated disc) "Go get a waitress" AND THE GUY STRAIGHT UP STANDS UP GRABS HIS BACKPACK AND RUNS AWAY
Like 2 seconds later a girl and her friend actually helped me but I was so confused. My friend threw up on me and she was fine.
@@202cardline I cant remember what they call this but I remember learning about it in my socially class.
It's the same thing that makes people watch a horrible accident take place and no one does anything. They just don't want the responsibility.
Good catch. In addition to pointing and saying "you" I also describe what they're wearing so that there's no confusion. You in the blue shirt or lady in the red shoes.
@@sombrs44 It's called the bystander effect. It's caused either by pluralistic ignorance or diffusion of responsibility. In a nutshell, the former is people reacting calmly when witnessing a crime if other witnesses behave that way, and the latter is people feeling less responsible for helping the victim the more people there are around - they expect someone else to do it.

Stop your not funny
As a person living with autism, I can confirm that the hyper visualization of knowledge that he uses when performing surgery on the kid is extremely accurate for some people on the spectrum. It's actually so accurate that it shocked me when my girlfriend told me that it wasn't a normal way of processing information given that it’s the only way I have ever been able to think, as I’m more or less 100% visual when it comes to thinking.
Yeah, most humans have extremely limit conceptual reasoning. When I took an intelligence test I was told 2 things. I think like an engineer (from how I constructed) and the my spatial reasoning was "of the chart". I doubt it still is anymore. Life is cruel.
I am also autistic. I also make programs for the TI-84. When i draft the programs on paper (because its a pain to get a full picture on the device itself) i SEE myself typing every letter, number, and command while just writing them on paper. The calculator has a very specific input method, not just writing words, you have to find the commands - i see every key press and menu

He was non communicative until he was 4.5 years old and being in school (therapy) has helped him tremendously and he is able to calm himself down with deep breaths and hold small conversations with us, which we are tremendously grateful for. As an autistic person, I just want to add that yes early intervention is the best thing to do, but a lot of programs that teach "social skills" (based on NT standards) disregard the actual reasons and feelings behind our autistic behavior, so the so called "result" can be only on the appearance/surface and not actually help the autistic in question, so that's something to watch out for.
thank u for pointing this out, i’m tired of allistics wanting us to be “more” normal
@@ayypapi9366 Normal is very subjective, but I'd have to agree with you. I'm allistic (least I think so, its not like everyone gets that sort of checkup), but my father brought me up to look everyone in the eyes and sometimes when I do it I feel like I'm being weird, cause I end up feeling like I'm just staring at them. I notice that so many people just don't look at you when you speak to them, it must it be so much harder for the autistic, at least in some cases.
As an autistic person suffering through autism burnout, masking symptoms is so harmful in the long term. We need acceptance and support! Not to have to hide who we are to avoid violence.

I'm Autistic and the guy who did my assessment always said that it's not for Autistic people to change its for other people to accept it. Forcing yourself to maintain eye contact and generally pretending to be "normal" often just leads to massive breakdowns further down the line as you are constantly working at not standing out.
THIS i also have anxiety and ive haf panic attacks because of people forcing me to act "normal"
im also autistic and i feel like i have to mask myself to be accepted in this neurotypical world
My son is autistic. It has taken me years of failure to learn how to accept his idiosyncrasies as okay and not necessary for me to change. It’s a massive struggle for the neurotypical to adapt to the people who are autistic and make the different social connections that they use, translating them to what that means in neurotypical. It’s like constantly translating body language where one version means things other than what I’ve come to associate with them.
Parenting is hard anyways, prone to error with lasting consequence. Parenting an autistic child, even high functioning, is a whole other level of difficult.
All I can say is thank God for my wife who has refused to let me not learn better.
@@tylerpeacock8245 thank you for being so kind! I genuinely wish my parents were like you.
This, like of course there are some things we must learn to do. Like if something stops us from functioning then we need to work on it, but forcing yourself to be normal or forcing yourself to do things that make you uncomfortable that are not at all beneficial to do are just not needed. Like if how you are stops you from having a job then you need to work on that (assuming it’s possible to help) but clapping your hands when your excited doesn’t need to be, it’s others fault if they find that weird not you.

My dad is a doctor and he watches this with me and he says it’s VERY accurate at times but very inaccurate as well
It's very interesting you say that about the autism social training. I'm on the spectrum, but when I am working you would never know, because my parents put me in situations where I could practice doing things like looking people in the eye and making sure to give professional hand shakes if needed. They sound like basic things to most people but I have to consciously tell myself to look people in the eye with every encounter. I weirdly like the intricacies of people though and have picked up on so many social cues that you would never know when I'm at work or in a social setting that I've prepared myself for. My parents didn't really know but they immensely helped me.
You sure have good knowledge and skill about your profession. Your patient's are lucky to have you
I met Freddie Highmore (the Good Doctor) once when he was filming Bates Motel near my house, he is the literal most gentle, humble, innocent and kind soul on the planet. He had been filming a really intense scene across the street but he just stood right up and came to talk to me, my mom and my sister (we were like 8 at the time). Such a pleasant person

The best review I ever watch on UA-cam tnx Dr Mike love you very much ❤❤❤
this guy is a doctor, youtuber, AND he’s good-looking. He is living SO luxuriously!
For real
Doctors make a SHIT ton of money
Not really. Surgeons do but the general practitioners don't
Adam Gawlowski isn’t he a surgeon?
@@alyssas136 no.
Yeah but you gotta add the doctors paycheck which is a bit over average and add the money he gets from 2.3 mil subs...he’s living
One of the pharmacists i used to work with was a little autistic. Name any medicine and he would know everything about it. He could answer any question a customer had. He was a genius!
I love your passion in this comment, but I need to tell you no one has "a little Autism".
There is OCD, high functioning and low functioning Autism, Asperger's syndrome, ASD, and so forth. People have specific things that give them certain traits depending on what they've learned growing up. No Autistic person has "a little" or "a lot" of Autism.
Rise Snowflake I was always taught that autism was on a spectrum. Is that wrong?
Rise Snowflake Lmao what? You’re wrong.
@@satchinjoseph3509 For your information I'm pretty sure I know more about Autism than you. I HAVE Autism, so I'm pretty sure I know more than your little books. Yes Autism is in a spectrum, but that is where Asperger's syndrome, add, high functioning Autism, etc. Come in. People have one of the types of Autism on the spectrum, but NO THEY DO NOT have a little or a lot of Autism. Don't try to act like you know more about it when you've never actually experienced it.
My nephew is autistic and can tell you any facts about whatever dinosaur you want hahaha
Thank you for breaking down the terminology it helps me a lot!
Yes my older son took those classes to mimic others when he was age 5 till he was 11 yrs of age he learned to be able to look people in the eye and have conversations he had friends in middle and high school but could still struggle because of his intelligence and trying to explain to others-like having to learn how to show his work on paper when he just knew the answers
Yeah, you feel like a psychopath, mimicking emotions you do not have that others do.

My son is on the autism spectrum, and we always had indoor dogs while he was growing up. You’re so right about their importance! His favorite dog was his “happy thought” when he got stressed and needed to calm down. He even carried a photo of her with him for times when she couldn’t be with him. He’s now 30, graduated with a degree in physics, has a partner, and is employed. 😊
Is it too late if he's 14 to get a dog?
ReelVanLife Living never too late :)
ReelVanLife Living it’s never too late
As someone who had a cousin with savants and autism one thing I have to say is they are some of the smartest people
Such happy comment. It’s so precious to read something like this when most of the comments & news are about negative things. Thanks for sharing. Bless your family.
I saw you getting slightly teary eyed there Dr Mike lol you always can tell that someone loves what they do when something simple as a video based off of what they are passionate about can take them from an idea (such as a scene in a show )to a reality. Also I do work with autistic children. I was amazed how well he did in portraying that part. It made me enjoy the show even more
"Could be a surgeon, I don't know yet" 😂😂
That's a question that's gonna get answered in season two
I think it’s really cool that your able to comment on everything and be able to tell us how accurate it is, and even teach us through out the episode what everything means ! I wish you did this for the whole season haha
yasmin alkaabi I AGREE. Do the entire season please!!!
OMG SAME
Like 500 yeah
My son is autistic..I can't speak on the doctor aspects..but the way he portrays someone who is autistic is so on point. I've seen commentary videos with him in it and its crazy how amazing his acting is..dude has an accent lol
I would like to tell the doctor above that if he watched it and didn't believe the schematics Shaun pulls up in his mind, I passed my tests in school by going to the pages in my mind to get the answers. I have photographic and audio-graphic memory. Autism IS a superpower in many ways. Too bad I didn't have a mentor like he does on the show.
@@hudsonsteele1674 I think the unbelievable part was more about the definition of the veins in the boy's arm. Though honestly I believe that's more for the viewer than it really is what Shawn is seeing.
Some with autism definitely seem to have superpowers though and I can say that as well for those with savant syndrome. It's crazy and unbelievable the stuff that they can do at times.
Good to know! I really like the show, but I had no idea if was anything close to a realistic portrayal of someone with autism. My only personal experience with autism slectrum disorders is having a friend with Aspergers, but it's relatively mild from the outside; the only thing is you have to explicitly tell him if something bothers you. He's a nice guy.
Of course he has an accent. He's BRITISH!!
The actor Freddie who plays Shaun spent a week or something like that. With an autistic person. He said that he wanted to portray it right that he didn’t want to offend anyone by just guessing at it. (These aren’t his exact words but you get it).
Freddie is an amazing actor and I can’t wait to see more.
It’s so wild to see this video pop up after seeing the excess of memes of the “I AM A DOCTOR” scene.
Thankyou doc for the info. surely one of the best channel i subscribed on youtube. All the love from Delhi, INDIA❤
