Developers Always Nerf Powerful Things - But Why?

- In this video Soul discusses powerful weapons, and items as well as exploits in games, and whether or not developers should nerf or fix them.
This is based on a comment discussing the Red Tearstone Ring and Clever Cat Ring in Dark Souls, however I always use the Hoarfrost Stomp seen in Elden Ring, and discuss how that was nerfed by FromSoftware.
I agree with keeping in overpowered weapons or items, at least for PvE, but bosses jumping into the void kinda breaks the immersion for me, so I think it's fine they actively try to prevent that.
moonveil needs a buff
Surely
Nooo stay away from my moon baby
yeah being able to play the game in a challenging way on one playthrough and then make yourself op on another is a great feature and just allows for more gameplay hours
There are two kinds of fun. Being super OP and finding the combinations that let you demolish everything with ease is one kind; facing a real challenge that demands skill and practice because you can’t just stack the numbers in your favor is another. FromSoft design for the second kind of fun, and that’s OK. Keeping the OP stuff in there because people enjoy exploiting it means that the kind of fun they’re actually trying to cultivate is damaged, and I wouldn’t accept that either.
about hoarfrost stomp, imo its not unrealistic to find it on your first playthrough and at least on release that thing was busted, sure having something OP is fun but if its too easy to get it devalues everything it touches, other weapons seem worthless compared to it, bosses and enemies seem like a joke because your weapon deletes them, it breaks the experience and in the case of hoarfrost stomp it wasnt hard to get, no great enemy to overcome, no puzzle, it wasnt even far in the game
personally I think that games should have OP PvE weapons but only available if you do something impressive or get further into the game, kinda like high level sorcery in DS1, dark bead with best gear for sorcery is not something that you can stumble upon early game, its end game gear with end game sorcery that turn you into a god, its deserved
tl;dr
imo powerful things are fine if they are end-game gear or behind some powerful obstacle (best sorceries in DS1 for example), hoarfrost stomp is available in the second major area of the game and its just in a chest (the weapon with the art, the art itself is from one of the loot bugs, also not hard to get)
Agreed, as soon as I found it very early on I was like oh damn Im using this all the time
While I disagree with this video I will say it is well written and produced. Good work.
Was waiting for someone to talk about this topic. Moonveil and ROB got nerfed so hard, atleast SonF got a buff after being hit, but now these two Katanas are almost useless. Why? I never got to use them and I couldn't care less about PVP . It's just sad especially since it's the first time ever a Katana was actually good in a Fromsoftwere game.
I don't know what nerfed means to you but as someone who's used those after their nerf they are still really good. You can still experience the feeling of watching the bosses health bar disappear
@skylermorrow4849 I don't think so I used ROB on Melania who is supposed to be weak to bleed, and even with a mimic tear her fight was impossible. Attacking her with the aow does nothing unless you actually hit her with the sword. The weapon skill was extremely nerfed. You can use the weapon like a regular Katana yes but Corpse piler is just useless so basically everything that made ROB special is gone. It's better to use an Uchi with unsheath.
@alenezi989a3 yeah that ash of war that stuns her out of the majority of attacks. Maybe the weapon just doesn't win the fight for you anymore. Maybe you have to correctly build for the weapon. I don't know how it sucks since it works with the best talismans and buffs in the game.
@skylermorrow4849 it's not about being good at Malenia's fight or not, it's about ROB being infact nerfed to the ground with most of its damage gone. As I said a regular Uchi does better in every single way it a bleed uchi with unsheath makes ROB, unless you choose to play a weak weapon, a weapon going from S tier to B if not C tier is what being nerfed mean. So yes ROB was nerfed hard.
@alenezi989a3 I'm not saying it's still S tier. It was certainly nerfed. I'm just saying that among the weapons in the game. Moonveil and ROB are still some of the best weapons. Certainly A tier weapons that do great damage despite bad scaling on ROB. Now they are good weapons that don't just trivialize the later half of bosses. And comparing weapons that are infusable and can have different ashes of war is a goofy argument.
I'm okay with them nerfing items and trying to crack down on One-Trick players. What I am COMPLETELY done with is the complete obscurity with my characters equipment.
I'm tired of reading item descriptions that just say
"MASSIVELY increases maximum health"
And then I have to STOP PLAYING, open up fextralife to find out that its 8%.
This is outrageously unnecessary.
You don’t need to search how much those things increase numbers tho. You can literally just equip the item and see how many health points it gives you, or test the damage difference on items when you equip them by attacking enemies. It’s about testing builds
@@thegrimeyhole You know what game DIDN'T have a problem with being transparent with its numbers upfront no research required?
A little critically acclaimed title called
*_Bloodborne._*
Caryll Runes AND Bloodgems give you the exact statistics upfront right from the item description.
Metamorphosis rune? 10%
Red Brooch Gem? Increase damage by 5%
Its not THAT hard and it doesn't take away from the experience to be transparent with your players tools. Bloodborne is still championed as a peak Souls experience from the majority of the fanbase.
I do miss Dark Souls, we broke everything and it was fun. Nerfing a build i worked hard for is not fun.
Nerfing things because 1% of the community found a glitch makes no sense when that 1% is constantly looking for that and they will finda new exploit that same day. I remember when i was in school and we would talk about how the glitch and cheese bosses and i was a fun experience. Now hell forbid you tell someone because if you do Fromsoftware will take it away.
My friend easily found out Hoarfrost Stomp on the early patch and he spammed it on the less than an hour he played the game. He certainly had fun but that is from breaking the game/rules. That’s not game design, it’s lack of polish. It’s fine to leave it but it ruins the meticulously and hard worked crafted experience that the devs made just for speedrunners or gamebreakers to have a tiny bit more fun for 15 minutes. Btw OP and broken builds/strats will obviously ruin variety and uniqueness because everyone is naturally inclined biologically to seek the path of least resistance. I have friends that know how to break certain bosses in DS3 and they NEVER fight them legitimately since, and they replay the game at least monthly.
On the topic of glitches in video games, I'm all for keeping them in. I feel like glitches help create unintended skips, can add enjoyment to play time if you just feel like messing around, and really adds a lot of variety to speed running
One of my favourites is playing COD zombies maps on release. Finding cool glitches in the maps to spice up high round attempts was always so much fun to mess around with and was always unfortunate when they would eventually get patched out
They should have one guy do nothing but test weapons and spells or anything that causes damage on all the enemies in the game in a variety of different ways
From should remove weapon upgrade entirely, that feature is just hinder fun and made enemies scaling really mess up. Especially when elden ring isn't linear like a ds game. They would balanced enemies better if weapon update isn't a thing.
It would certainly have made PVP more lively
But that would really harm alot of weapons, like can find a weapon you really like, but it's weak now, so upgrade it to make it stronger, if there is no upgrade then the weapon will forever be useless. Upgrades actually add an interesting mechanic to the game,
@@alenezi989a3 if weapon upgrade doesn’t exist then you can use the new weapon you just pick up at their peak. No more over level no more under level, no more can’t use weapon bc you doesn’t have smithing stone, if you have the required stats just use it.
That's a terrible idea
I kinda agree
Bc then there's no reason to use anything else
fromsoft will tell me whats fun
Because modern developers hate fun
