This has been the birth and becoming the evolution of a genre. "Soulslike" is now a genre. It's a Steam tag. Like "Metroidvania" or "ARPG." So far, FromSoft is the GOAT, and probably will remain so for quite some time...But there was a time in the past when "FPS" was new, and Wolfenstein/Doom were the OGs that nobody else could outdo. It was just a matter of time and technology before other developers came along took the genre to new and innovative places. We just tend to forget about the many, many, MANY failures that came and went along the way.
My thing is eventually Miyazaki is going to retire or nove on from souls-likes or the studio go to shit. Nioh 2 for example was a great game. It could stand toe to toe with Dark Souls at least with combat. But it kinda falls short in other areas like story. The more people who make these games the more we'll learn why these games work and what doesnt work
As a huge soulslike fan I honestly cant get enough if them however there are some bad soulslike like Dolmen that don't get it. Im always keen to playing most of these games though as there fun to me. Id recommend LOTF, Lies of P, The Surge 1+2, Thymesia, Mortal Shell, Nioh 1+2, Wo Long, etc.
Tons of soulslikes are released every year and have been since Dark Souls was released. I'm starting to think you haven't heard of IronPineapple. Also, I disagree that variations get tiring at some point. Breath of the Wild was a new title that followed decades of similar titles, and it was amazing. I dont think people mind things being similar as long as they are high quality. Like you said, I do think LoP is FromSoftware level of quality.
I loved Lies, absouletly loved it however i also love Lords, LOVE IT! For me what really makes a souls game a souls game is dark midevil fantasy world and thats wat puts Lords over Lies for me... Itd got all the different classes and character customization midevil armor and weapons and the way you can farm enemies for their armor and weapons.. Thats wat makes a souls game and no ones really mentioned that at all.
Yes they are and are dominating the Market these days. Problem is most of them are terrible. The alternative Solution is Metrovania games, plenty of great ones. Hollow Knight, Moonscars, Bloodstained Ritual Of The Knight, Ender Lillies, Blasphemous 1 and 2
I want a ds2 remake from the ground up. The engine can match ER, bring back all the cool magic, bring back most of the bosses but revamp them, cut or expand the shitty areas, bring back the lore and retcon just enough to fit in with ds1 and 3 more. It definitely doesnt need to be as long as ER or ds2 softs.
I didn’t play Lords of the Fallen, but Lies of P is absolutely incredible, and probably one of my favorite games of all time. I like Lies of P more than Dark Souls III and maybe even Demon’s Souls, and if souls-likes keep getting better I have no problems with it.
I'm a little surprised to hear you liked Lies of P, the game has some pretty heavy inspiration from Sekiro which I seem to recall you did not enjoy mixed with bloodborne's speedy combat & multiple pathways to pull one or two enemies away from one another. thing is that the market will decide what is and is not tired of & so long as there is enough originality in a game I don't see the issue tbh, games like Star Wars Jedi Survivor & LoP are soulslike sure but other than having resting points and relying on a parry mechanic you'd be hard pressed to take a look at them and easily recognize they are part of the same genre. I havent been following the likes of IronPineapple and TheBacklogs all that much this year to be intimately familiar with what soulslike's have hit the market this year but only one has found some mainstream success, I find it very hard to call it oversaturated, are there tons of rather crappy clones? yeah but that goes for just about everything that is popular and I don't see more than like two or three tripple A studios even considering getting into the genre so, honestly, I can't really see oversaturation being an issue as of right now, I think Elden Ring's initial reception deceived a lot of people into thinking these kinds of games are a lot more popular than they actually are as even though ER is still one of the most popular if not the most popular Fromsoftware game its active player base took a dive pretty quickly after its release. eventually this genre is going to morph into something completely different, given the success of Lies of P and the excitement that was behind Lords of the Fallen and how mainstream Elden Ring went the studios that do understand these games are likely going to carry the genre into totally new territory and, even if things get stale that will reflect in sales which will force another shift in approach. definitely is not time to worry yet, for years all I heard was how people wanted these kinds of games to get more attention & now that they are there are people concerned about that attention, I can't help but see it as a good thing, we're definitely going to be treated to some gems over the next few years.
Hexworks .team ninja..round8 studio..overborder studios..these studios will continue fromsofts legacy of souls games ..glad that we wont be short of souls games in coming time
It’s too difficult to make a souls like. It’s biting off more than you can chew. Even for 100 million dollars budget, that almost makes it worse because it gets bogged down by committee and organization incompetence, as well as typical corporate stuff. From soft is a dictatorship. And they have super hard working talented people at every level, who are actually encouraged and applauded for creativity. Compare that with typical corporate office politics. It’s kind of like starting a car company to compete with Honda and Toyota. You might as well give up. They’re too far ahead.
from what I've heard Fromsoft actually cares about their employees, which is not the kind of thing that happens in a corporation that is run like a dictatorship.
Okay I don't understand the praise for lies of P. It tries to do both Bloodborne combat and sekiro combat but fails at both. Everytime I dodge in lies of P I'd rather be dodging in Bloodborne, and everytime I parry in lies of P I'd rather be parrying in Sekiro. A games combat system should not be making me want to play other games.
Like at this point everyone should understand what capitalism is. If you do something and it succeds. Everyone follows and we gonna get lot of mixed feelings in them 😂
Souls games are going to become like Call of Duty FPS games, eventually. Only so many variations of these mechanics and boss designs can exist. The more of these games come out the more the community will break apart. These are all becoming simulacra.
Do people actually like the awkward, physics breaking, sporadic movesets of Lies of P bosses? I loved the game but enemy movesets were so weird, felt like an artificial way to make the game harder, I just miss bosses with good telegraphs that can be reacted to.
The game felt off to me from the combat to the bosses, an imitation of a copy. Not too mention everything else it did was literally Bloodborne and Sekiro.

Lies Of P is not soulslike , it is a SOULSGAME
Its a souls like if its not Fromsoft or its just an action game@@dannyton8478

Problem with theese souls games is that they feel the same but worse, instead of the same but better.
The more soulslike the better, as long as they are doing them right. Good fun boss fights, impactful weapons good enemy variety etc..
Yes they are and are dominating the Market these days. Problem is most of them are terrible. The alternative Solution is Metrovania games, plenty of great ones. Hollow Knight, Moonscars, Bloodstained Ritual Of The Knight, Ender Lillies, Blasphemous 1 and 2
At this point I can literally only play Soulslikes or Metroidvanias lol
And CRPGS of course.@@ShawnBlaque
I mean, Moonscars, Ender Lillies and the Blasphemous games are souls-likes...
7 months later and I’m still waiting for the next video
It's like with anime, too many Isekai but only a few can have an interesting story

Commenting for the algorithm, underrated channel!
It would be curious to see your reception to the DLC for elden ring
I'm glad we're getting so many Souls likes. normal video games are just too easy now

Unfortunately, art and capitalism dont mix well together all the time, well most of the time

Of course not. The more better.
No.
