Souls community has two sides. First one contains people who genuinely enjoy the game and welcome all type of other players with different backgrounds and not hesitate to bring up negatives; while the second one contains basement dwellers who thinks being a veteran for a video game is a social status.
Yeah, exactly; FightinCowboy's thinks he's a veteran and thus earns a social status himself. In all seriousness, well yeah, I thought there's worth in these people, uploading themselves being new to the game and being ecstatic when they've defeated Taurus Demon after failing a few times, that was wholesome. I kind of miss these simpler times.
"So my approach or play style was to use everything I have at my disposal, all the assistance, every scrap of aid that the game offers, and also all the knowledge that I have as the architect of the game… the freedom and open-world nature of Elden Ring perhaps lowered the barrier to entry, and I might be the one who's benefiting the most from that, as a player, more than anyone else." -Miyazaki
Exactly, I think this quote says everything that needs to be said. It also clearly proves that the opinion that ANY way to play these games could be considered "wrong" is completely just some made up, circle-jerking spawn of probably some niche reddit community of insecure neckbeards - these people are not to be listened to or treated with any validity or respect.
There is also this other side that shits on you if you dont utilize all the mechanics of the game. E.g I dont like playing with summons, using consumables, or levelling vigor to tank bosses because that gameplay is not as engaging to me. I just like simple and clean sword fights like sekiro. But whenever someone sees that, they call me stupid, saying I'm trying to be an elitest making things harder for myself for no reason. Like jeez, I play these games to have fun, not to quickly finish them to brag about it.
@@askeladden450 It is also not true, that those things make the game easier necessarily. I suck at the game and pretty much have to use the Miyazaki strategy a lot of times but all in all, I try to do it straightforwardly. And, in the end, I found it is not just more engaging and rewarding. It is also easier to not cycle through consumables for example. Ranged attacks do not work on highly mobile bosses. Which includes many consumables (assuming they even work on a boss in the first place). Ranged combat can work well with summons. However, using summons makes many bosses harder to fight in melee. Timing your (melee) attacks is hard if not impossible with a summon drawing the attention away from the boss. A boss can cut through a big health bar easily if you suck at dodging. Maybe in 3 attacks instead of 1 but not needing to dodge will just end up in you not learning how to. It will not prevent you from getting staggered for example. Good armor will prevent you from getting staggered when eating attacks but you will also not get that attack window that a successful dodge gives you. Etc, etc.
You have to remember that 95% of Elden Ring's playerbase have only ever played Elden Ring. It's not their fault that they're retarded, cut them some slack lmao

The community was primarily the reason why I held off on playing souls games until today when I bought elden ring. Had people in high school talk about video games, and only ever ended up bringing the souls series into the conversation, and how they would say "You aren't a true gamer until you've played or beaten DS" or whatever. I think the souls games have really gotten to people's ego, especially if they haven't touched grass in 7 years
Elden Ring isn't a "souls game", it's not a sequel, a prequel, a midquel, a spin-off, nor is it even in the same universe, nor is Dark Souls even an open-world game, so no, you have yet to play Dark Souls. Not that I share the opinion of the people at your high school, but I think it's hilarious how insecure you are about not having played some videogame, so just letting you know, that to those people you are *still* not a "true gamer".
@@SteveFard No they haven't. Attitudes like that only started becoming common with the release of Prepare to Die Edition... coincidentally when the games became mainstream. In Demon's and OG launch nobody cared if you found a way to cheese bosses or played spellcasters. Nice try though.
I’m very new to the series, so I was stunned when I learned how toxic this community really is. First playing through Dark Souls I wasn’t having a fun time at all, and I asked the sub Reddit, respectfully, is this just a me problem or do most people have the same issue when they first pick up a souls game. I was not ready for the level of hate I was about to receive because I wasn’t enjoying the game to that point. I was shocked at how unhelpful and defensive those people are. I beat the game anyway and I’m on to playing other souls games but damn I hate the community with a passion and wish they would stop being little babies
from someone who's first souls game was darksouls 3, yes it is that hard for most people when picking up a game like it for the first time, i spent hours on the first boss alone
I also started with elden ring and got better, i come from the cod community and I didnt think the souls community could be this toxic but damn I was so wrong
I really hate that every discussion about the quality of anything in these games immediately changes to a discussion about the difficulty. That’s how OBSESSED with it the community is: you can’t criticize any aspects of the game or else you’re just bad, unless you call certain parts too easy. It just completely shuts out any criticism or interesting discussion because all anyone cares about is if it’s hard or not, not if it’s GOOD or not. For instance, I love Sekiro but hate Dark Souls. I consider Sekiro the harder game and also enjoy it more by a mile but I really do not like playing DS because I think the controls are absolutely terrible. But nope, I’m not allowed to criticize anything about these games, I’m just bad (completely ignoring that I’ve beaten both games and have completed Sekiro without dying)! It’s such bullshit.
It's crazy, they have never changed. I made a reddit post years and years ago when I first played ds1 essentially doing the same thing. Asked for some tips as a noob and criticised some things (which I still think are bad even after playing all the games multiple times) and was met with nothing but hate and defensiveness. It's not even worth interacting with the community outside of youtube because they are all so angry at the world.
That's the part that sucks, some parts of the community is actually awesome and is so much fun to find out about each other's experiences but you will inevitably came across that one guy that loves ruining everything
@@TJuice1986Plat chaser does everything you need to get the plat, he will skip and leave behind stuff if it doesn’t contribute to the plat. while cowboy is just a walkthrough of helping people get through the game and get almost everything.
Yeah the souls community has some real elitist goblins. I've seen them flooding 5 year old horizon zero dawn clips that previously had like 200 views and rave in the comments about how elden ring is better. Thats just the most current example of how toxic they are, not even the fact that they're seeking out the videos, but ITS THE WRONG GAME 🤣
@@Neon_Henchman It is easy to blame it on those "git gud" scrubs. I bet those idiots never even beaten a really challenging game for themselves without googling shit or looking anything up on youtube. But looking down on others? Man. I played games before the internet was fully functioning. The fuck are you talking about?
For me, playing as a mage is harder. You get locked into attacks that refuse to hit moving targets, have a limited amount of mana which can only be refilled by your flasks that can either heal you or refill the blue bar. The attacks don't do any massive damage over time like bleed, rot or ice so you have to spec into int for real damage and that usually involves you having lower defensive stats. Even endgame, being a mage is a challenge just as much as anything else.
People completely miss this point and thinks mages are the only OP playstyle in the game cause they see some comet azur on reddit/youtube vs bosses on first try. The truth is, that "kill" probably, multiple tries.
If anything, mage builds are the ones that demand good positioning and timing your attacks and overall strategizing the most, because for eg: while malenia WILL dodge most straight projectile spells, she won't be able to dodge the comet spells because they are semi invisible.
This is how I see it for most souls games: Mage builds make some parts easier and some parts a lot harder Melee builds make some parts easier and some parts a lot harder Hybrid builds make most things normal
Personally I'm more of a pure strength enjoyer, but unless your using the pre-nerf comet azur setup being a mage is absolutely harder. It's as you said, way less health and defensive stats, you can't really use good armour, and you have to sacrifice heals. Being a pure strength build is so much easier. Dual wielding two colossal greatswords that do 2.5k per jump attack with a hp and endurance bar filling your whole screen + flasks that you can keep exclusively for healing and ignore mana. And also dodging is way easier, you don't get locked in place for nearly as long with melee builds.
I'd never do that. That's like someone telling you their dream and laughing at them. It's no different than laughing at you. A bunch of disrespectful twats whose parents forgot to whip with branches. Then it goes the other way. I tried to give genuine advice if I pair with a host whose struggling. I don't even tell them to swap stuff I've told people they can jump Horah Loux/Godfrey stomps and they've gotten pissy with me. I've had people where I offered to shield tank to help them with aggro, they still got pissy with me. I'm a co-op enjoyer who gave up on PVP due to a lack of fun hosts. At this point I'm just about done helping.
Yes. Well put, actually. I think this happens a lot, where newer players are sharing their experiences with excitement and they're happy to be experiencing this thing that everyone has been raving about all this time... and then instead of being welcomed into the community as they'd have assumed would happen, the people they were kind of looking up to as mentors of the franchise just clap back at them out of nowhere to ridicule and mock them for the choices they made while playing. I hate it. I'm also convinced it's a group almost entirely composed of 7-16yr old boys with low self worth and high insecurity, and then there's a gap of 17-25yr old males who don't play (it's a fact look it up there's never been a single person of those ages that played these games and never will) and then it starts up again with like, 26+ yr old people who clearly live alone and are just insufferable, arrogant and shockingly immature.
I played the game how it meant to be played and destroyed Melanie multiple times, called her the most overrated “hardest Souls boss ever”. And people are like, “you’re playing a broken build, you’re using summons”🤓 Like 🐩 they give me all these tools unlike the rest of the souls games, it’s not cheating to use the things the games provide you 💯
Totally agree with cowboy here in the terms of gameplay, play how you want, wear what you want, having someone dictate your playstyle just isnt right unless its constructive feedback as it provides you options, a choice to your characters progression. It doesnt give you the right to be arrogant towards somone not running a broken meta build.

@@Ruffington_Roast That's not even relevant. There are problems with modern gaming, BUT there were crap and mid games in the past as well. We just don't remember them as well.
@@Mr33500 You pointed out why your point is irrelevant. Secondly, how many of those games a decade ago were pushing identity politics and treating every game like a lefty struggle session?
Still relevant today, especially dlc. It’s crazy watching some streams of people playing any Souls game and there’s always someone in chat that is complaining on the streamer’s gameplay. I genuinely don’t understand it, especially when it’s someone who is playing blind and has never played a souls game. It’s their first time, why are you bitching in chat on someone’s first experience?!
It's undoubtedly because they are using one of the 5 streamer weapons that other chatters pressured him into getting and using. That made new player streams completely unwatchable for me since 99% have carbon copy setups that I've seen countless times. Sad part is most setups can be op but the neanderthals in chat just dont let people play organically and must have the streamer play bloodhound fang, greatsword lions claw, moonveil etc.
Back in the day before the souls games went super mainstream it was socially acceptable to criticize them. People criticized the hell out of Dark Souls 2 back in the day and no one gave anyone shit for it. Now you cant even say Dark Souls 2 was bad without Fromsoft fanboys losing their goddamn minds
@@KitsGravityit's the worst community in gaming Imo. You can't criticise boss design etc . Or that we are playing against more and more anime stuff while still using demons souls combat
The reason for the community's elitism is a combination of two things. The first is the industry, which ignorantly pushes Souls games as the new status quo for what makes a game challenging. The second is the influx of players into the community over the past few years who play or acknowledge so few video games that they don't realise how many other games, old and new, demand more from the player than any Souls game.
Its funny how people consider mages easy mode. I’m doing a mage build on NG+ 3 after a respecc and bosses like Morgott/Hoaroaxh Loux and DLC bossess etc spank my shit when I try to get a spell going. Mages without summons using timing and spacing to cast a spell that can actually take a chunk of boss health is a struggle in itself. Oddly enough the easiest playthrough I had was the unga bunga stagger strength build because I could tank damage, get staggers etc.
I'm 100% with him on this. It's the biggest problem with these games and I can imagine it's why there are so many people who are deterred from playing it because they know they're going to be ridiculed for the way they play or they'll feel like they're playing the game wrong which results in them getting even more frustrated with the game. In the end, it's a game. Play it the way you feel most comfortable and is most fun for you. Whether it's running around smacking things in nothing but a loincloth and a pot on your head or it's being decked out with the best armor slinging magic everywhere. Just play the game, have fun, and don't be a prick. It's not a hard thing to do and it's not asking for a lot.

My best friend had never played dark souls, i got him to play ds1 for the first time. He barely leveled dmg stats and mostly leveled vigor and endurance. He still beat the game with a plus 15 broadsword tank build. If souls elitists were to see how my friend played, they would have probably lost their mind. The point of a soulsborne games for me is figurine out with your own way how to beat the game, not how others tell you.
my friend is playing DS1 for the first time with a black knight halberd and we killed O&S in about 60 seconds (with summon hp boost) honestly I felt bad for him that his sense accomplishment was robbed. he was just like "is that it". I'm not trying to be an elitist but he honestly doesn't sound like he's having fun with the game by breezing through it with no effort. wouldn't overcoming an insurmountable challenge be more rewarding?
@@Alistair_7609 There’s nothing wrong with summoning, though for O&S in particular I think it’s a lot more fun to have the 2V1 experience. Even with an OP Weapon and O&S having less heath it’s still very possible to die since you could get cornered or 2nd phase Ornstein can give new players a lot of trouble. For the most part though I think the fun of DS1 is exploring the world and navigating the areas, it’s one of the reasons why DS1 is my favourite. But if your friend wants some tough bosses, or at the very least tough endgame bosses then maybe they’d enjoy DS3 or Elden Ring more if they haven’t played it already. Alternatively there’s trying DS1 with different builds or playing NG+ with what they’re currently using. The Black Knight Weapons are always very good but they don’t tower over standard weapons by that point.
@lukefitton7329 that's the thing, he played every other souls game with normal, average builds, just saw a cool looking weapon, and started using it. dark souls 3 is his favorite game of all time, which is why I think using the op option just harms the user experience more than helps it.
The most prominent divide I've seen in the Souls community is between cooperators and invaders. It's astounding the amount of distain they have for each other
I am admittedly VERY anti invader but it's because most of the invaders I've had have been assholes that camp RIGHT BEFORE BOSS AREAS and then instantly kill me because I'm not good at the PvP. I wish it was an opt-out system tbh. Just let me have fun, enjoy the silly messages, and summon Solaire without camping and assaulting me before I've even beaten the gargoyles. I always get the guys that like to pick on new characters and players. The sweaty try hards make the game REALLY unfun.
@@HollyAnneThePaganChaosWitch There IS an opt out system. In DS3 invaders only come if you are embered. You can either choose not to be embered, or jump off a cliff if you want to remove the embered state, go back and collect the souls. In Elden Ring, you can turn off your multiplayer in settings.
@@rationalrama but that isn't really an option when playing DSR which is the one I'm currently playing. Also, why can't it be a toggle switch in the options menu for earlier games? It'd probably save plenty of invaders a lot of time if someone who's going to disconnect or jump off of a cliff anyway turns it off. Then they'd only get people who _want_ to PvP them. Now, I have yet to play Elden Ring but I'm pretty invested in how it handles its PvP because it sounds way better than the way DSR handles it. I always play alone in RPGs but I love seeing those little funny messages and hearing the bells go off for another player but when invaders hassle my new characters in the Burg or Parish (or Anor Londo tbh) I get frustrated. So, being able to be online without inviting invaders (or looking like a piece of beef jerky the whole time) sounds kinda nice to me.

I usually just stay hallowed and go offline when I want to summon Solaire for a boss fight. Part of the issue comes down to when the vast majority of invasions happen in DRS becuase it's normally people twinking. Especially in the Burg and Parish but also Anor Londo. This community has a lot of bullies in it who get off real hard on making potentially new players quit the game entirely. Makes it hard for me to get my friends into the games despite how good they are. :/

Making the most OP melee build is my way to play. Around the time when I was new to Elden Ring, I saw comments that were like, "If you start with X build, you're not a true player." Like, why do you care what this person chooses. I'd use some of the most OP magic + melee builds, with a mimic summon to cheese the bosses.
It's true that every stat has OP options, doesn't mean that every weapon is OP. In fact most "OP" weapons are only strong when you use their Ash of War, like Moonveil, RoB or Blasphemous Blade.
Souls games are puzzles, these puzzles have more than one solution. Each solution has varying levels of difficulty. Finding an easier solution doesn't make you worse than others.

Honestly I've been playing these games for a decade, and the way ER shifted the discussion around them is sort of weird. FS fans have always been annoying but ER brought in a much wider scope of people. In one camp, some of them tend to mimic the older annoying attitude of FS fans in an exaggerated and flanderized way, removed from the original irony. On top of that, you have people who are more casual but have bitten from the "oh my god these games are so hard" mentality. They clear a boss with level 200 magic beam spell and say oh my god this game is actually not hard at all, (they're not wrong). Where this turned into two camps shitting on each other was with more experienced players talking shop about boss design, and newer players proudly bragging about how they oneshot x boss with magic fuckbeam. This originally used to be an ironic joke, which instead became an earnest point of conversation over the game. Even worse, it's a totally useless and unconstructive way to talk about boss mechanics. There's nothing wrong with avoiding mechanics to reach new content but it adds absolutely nothing to a conversation centered around how those mechanics actually work. From my point of view, it's even more annoying to hear somebody smugly brag about how all you need to do is just not engage with a mechanic at all, when other people are trying to discuss how the mechanic actually works. It's like yes, we all remember playing DS1 and running away from the Asylum Demon but you're not actually contributing to the conversation, and it's also genuinely kind of annoying.
I agree that the conversation has shifted and become more polarised. I find it annoying when people act like we can't nitpick aspects of the game like how much time you're forced to spend not doing anything engaging riding around on the horse. Or the topic of whether or not the soulslike formula is played out and whether or not new mechanics or a new direction is necessary in future titles. So many people either abjectly hate the game or blindly worship it. It's strange how few nuanced opinions there are.

About the "magic is easy mode" bit. Yes it is. It's naturally easier to keep your distance from a boss while spamming projectiles. I know it because after dying so many times to Malenia's first phase while using a melee build, I first tried it spamming projectiles. Bleed builds are very good, but you have to expose yourself more. This is OBVIOUS. It shouldn't even be a debate. You can play however you want, but do not try to gaslight people into believing projectile builds are equally harder because that's simply not true. This modern youtubers who try at every cost to virtue signal are embarassing. "Look at me, I'm sooo tolerant. I am the protector of newcomers, now worship me 🥰🥰"
you're completely misrepresenting the points hes making. all hes saying about the people whining about magic is easy mode are ignoring the fact that other setups, although not 100% equally as easy, can still make fights so much easier than they are. i told my friend to use rivers prepatch on malenia after using a weaker weapon, and it was night and day for him. all the stress and malding he was doing, ended with "well that was easy". point im making is, what cowboy was saying is you can sit there and argue about what is the absolute easiest and have a stupid pissing contest or actually acknowledge the multitudes of setups that ISNT magic that can just make things trivial. also not once did he say magic builds are "equally harder". the entire crux of this argument is why tf does it matter so much to others how people play in single player non completive modes. in the end its not even about virtue signalling, its about being annoyed as fuck about insufferable elitists. the funny part about alot of those pve elitists too is they pigeon hole themselves to strength unga bunga builds and have zero game iq and most likely trash at pvp too.
You bought the game, play it how you want But ffs people try to brag about beating a boss first try after using mimic tear, dual great stars bleed life steal build to a rl1 player after sitting in mohgwyn palace for 2 days Its fine to use anything, but these people rating bosses or saying something is easy is instantly invalid and adds nothing of value to the conversation

The community will attack you over any little thing and content creators act very hypocritical and with immense cognitive dissonance when they bring FromSoft up. I'm really tired of FromSoft. Souls games are not even the best action RPGs on the market. Or hard. They're not even that hard, especially with how many broken options you can use.
I'm curious as to what action RPGs you think are "better." Also yeah, I've heard bad things about the souls community. I just refuse to engage or interact with ANY gaming community for the most part outside of smaller circles (such as with friends) or the occasional response to a comment like this. The gatekeeping and elitism by fanboys is all on the internet. They would never dare speak this way irl since it would expose their face to being punched.
The thing is, people have been giving themselves self imposed challenges in gaming since FOREVER. Look up Quake or Doom speedrunning. No death challenges. It's sad really that people act like this.

This is what happens when you change anything with your formula, especially when your first journey is really personal to you. Ds1 fans hated 2 for that reason. I am seeing thing happen against Bloodborne, Sekiro, and especially Ds3 players against this game. My point is, which ever game you play first will be more personal to you, but if you play another one and if the devs change anything, it pisses people. Everytime some art comes along that is personal, it has to be an expansion or appeal to that first game a person played. It's the price of success and it's why most art is generic because those artists will not embrace change due to sales. From Software may not seem like it, but they are one of those dev teams who do. As they made Deracine in 2018 and then made Sekiro, which was completely different to Souls before as it is more of an action game.
Dark Souls 2 has some flaws The enemy placement can be very annoying, It made some run backs painful (fuck the iron passage, I Lost a part of myself there😂)
This comment section is like a therapy session group for all the people that cant handle some hard hitting truth. Is playing as a mage or with phantoms "wrong"? Of course not. Is playing as a mage or with phantoms easier than most other builds or playing solo? BIG yes. Stop crying, face the reality and keep it pushing. Nobody really cares how you play at the end of the day.
I kinda agree with this to some extent. The experience is far different if you look at it. If you play as melee oriented guy, you are in the fray of the battle, middle of combat and all danger, as mage you are effectively outside of it and either using support or keeping distance. The experience and vibe is then vastly different, main reason from memory is Gundyr in 3rd DS, he was insanely easy as mage/pyromancer, but a nightmare for melee builds.
If no one cared about this, then such discussions wouldn't even exist. However, I've seen many players who actually believe that there is a “right” and a “wrong” way to play the game.
@@Alexander-pm4pp What I should say is: Normal souls players don't judge others how they play and they don't look for excuses if they play with easy builds. Simple as that
I actually really enjoyed my playthrough as a wizard. I didn't find it easier than melee builds overall, some bosses were actually nearly impossible without summons to buy some casting time.
And its all because people love to title this game as "difficult" lmao its a game. You do the same shit as every other game die➡️ repeat ➡️ learn ➡️ get better ➡️ win
To be fair, don't know why bosses need to be nerfed. Unless there's some truly crazy stuff going on they should just keep them as designed. Don't know exactly what was going on with Radahn in DLC according to players but I don't feel it was warranted.
First off how can you get mad at someone who utilizes what was put into the game in the first place? Secondly I never understood the whole gate keeping & elitist fanboy-ish types in games (or any form of entertainment) but unfortunately the ones in the souls community stand out! Sucks too because the souls community has so many cool people who offer help & guidance yet remain respectful! Unfortunately they are usually overshadowed by the ones taking the games way to serious!
@@glungusgongus I disagree, summons should definitely be in the game. And realistically, they're just an option, them being there doesn't mean they have to be interacted with
let me play devils advocate my friend played through ds3 and bloodborne multiple times with average melee builds and he considers them two of his favourite games of all time. recently he played ds1 for the first time and decided to use the black knight weapons after hearing how good they were. we killed O&S in roughly 60 seconds and he was utterly disappointed with his experience with the game and dropped it shortly after. I'm not trying to gatekeep or be an elitist. I love this series and think everyone should try it, but having seen how removing the challenge strips away such a significant part of the experience, I cant help but think people are doing themselves a disservice by using the "easy mode" builds. obviously everyone has a different skill level but I think everyone should try to challenge themselves or the whole point of the series becomes wasted.
That is, unironically, the smartest comment on here yet. You're 100% correct. Me too, I've enjoyed these games best when I just "winged it", going at my own pace. In fact, I will never forget this experience; DS2's Smelter Demon in the Iron Keep kept demolishing me, to the point that he taught me how to Roll correctly, but I still needed a bit more of an edge, so I looked into my Inventory, and found out I have the Gyrm Greatshield, which completely nullifies Fire Damage. Then, I was able to crush him with a very sizeable amount of health left. Just this one fight means a lot to me, in fact it's my favorite fight in all the Souls I've played so far, it rewarded me being resourceful with what I have, and it gave me the proper timing for Rolls too. When all these people care about are big numbers, instead of something that simply works for them or let alone experimenting with things, it just strips away a lot of the magic the games have. Your comment was a very good read.
Exactly this I know I'm late to this but me and my friends still approach the game like this because it's more enjoyable for us. I think it's ironic because you are easily labeled as an elitist if you voice this opinion and it seems the toxicity towards these elitists is just as bad if not worse at times.
@@seide2829 yeah I don't know when this happened but everywhere I look, voicing concern on someone else's behalf is viewed as being a prick. what most people mean by "you shouldn't use this build because its too easy" is "if you do this, you will damage your own first experience with the game". its too bad we live in an age where people are so defensive that giving someone a piece of genuine good intended advice, is seen as a personal attack on their existence.
@@seide2829 It really doesn't help they act this way, as; Why do the "Elitists" act toxic to begin with? Well maybe the animosity stems from somewhere else, hate just brews more hate. Besides, they cannot explain what their "Easy Mode" would entail, you know how they keep advocating for it while using their "parental responsibilities" as an excuse, among others? Well I asked them how they would make Anor Londo easier, by adding not only it seldomly uses enemies, so removing people would make the area empty, but even with damage reduction, it doesn't prevent the infamous Silver Knight Archer to push you off the edge, you'd still die as many times to the void. They have yet to give me good arguments on my points on why Dark Souls CAN'T have an Easy Mode, I didn't say "shouldn't".
i think the community got so much worse with the release of Elden ring due to bringing in alot of non souls players and just glazing elden ring like crazy becuase before elden ring the community was so much smaller and tbh it was gestures and meme videos wich was hilarious back in dark souls 3
Especially if you look at the achievments. Some games do "No damage this multiphased bullet hell boss", while "hardest" dark souls achievement is "grind for rings/magic/weapons".
I like cowboy but some gatekeeping isn't bad. It helps to keep the spirit of the game alive. Also, mages are easy mode but there is other builds that are as well.
Problem is that melee builds are more engaging and overall creative than mage builds. Everyone can keep the game how they want, its their product and their experience, but I can confirm from experience, for me playing up close and personal was way more fun than being in a distance casting spells.
Melee might be more mechanically demanding but ranged is a different kind of fun. Making a mage as OP as possible in whatever school of magic is a different kind of fun. E.g. Smarag's Glintstone Breath counts as both magic and flame while scaling off 3 different stats, so if you optimise it to insane levels and demolish everything, that's pretty fun. Obviously melee is the more developed system though and offers the most adrenaline
What's so sick about these games is, both player archetypes demand an entirely different skillset and feature different resource-management mindsets. Melee resource-management would get you killed if you're ranged/magic, and magic resource-management wouldn't make sense or be useful to a melee archetype. The two operate on different rules and to play one you have to get good at _those_ rules. The way they position is different. The way they explore is different. Even the things they each find _difficult,_ are different. Things that shut down a mage, a melee would find trivial. Things that are a melee's worst nightmare, casters have tools to beat easily. Personally, I couldn't play as a Mage, I'd find it hard in a way I'm admittedly not great at overcoming. I don't have the mind or thought process for it. Love being a rogue and using brutally dishonest methods to kill everything, though. Something that rides the line between melee and ranged, dipping into aspects of both.
To be real. Dark Souls groomed this gate keeping. The start was basically like so many came and they all lost and you will never gonna make it and if you do you are something better than all the other losers who quit. FS clearly used this pride fostering to make the game more popular. Also stuff like Prepare to Die edition, what a name. Also that the dev refused easy mode with basically saying "on easy mode you didn't play the game" enforced this.
Dark Souls' just good bro. Nobody had to play Dark Souls, there's also Umihara Kawase series which is still ongoing recently and saying stuff like "Hard to master", amongst other games, don't they also harbor this "Hardcore Gamer" mentality? Dark Souls just became mainstream by some degree luck (from what I recall Demon's Souls started off kinda slow afterall), but it was also a good game, why is FS the only one getting whipped for it when previous games were sleeper hits? There's nothing wrong in not liking it, but now everyone wants everything to be made for anyone instead of it remaining niche.

I joined Dark Souls with 3 in around 2019, 2020 or so. My end builds have always been High Vigor/Vitality Heavy armor Strength builds. I love these games, a lot, Dark Souls II being my favourite. I joined the souls community right before the "You arent playing the game correctly" purge that Elden Ring brought. Sure, it was there beforehand, but not nearly as bad. My first and only response to the people who regurgitate this garbage is that if its in the game, and you want to use it, use it. These games are in my mind, action puzzle games. Each boss and area is a puzzle, and with enough time they can be overcome, it is sinply choosing the answer that is easiest or the most fun for you to do, sometimes challenging yourself. Using the tools in game to beat the game is not "Playing the Game Wrong." as these people claim, its playing the game in your own way. Pay no mind to anyone who says anything about playing the game wrong, they don't like the fact that these are fun and challenging games that encourage you to solve their "puzzles" with the tools they give you, they like the fact that the games are seen as hard, and want to stroke their egos by telling themselves and others that they're playing the "Right" way.
Reading these comments is so bizarre. Everyone in an echo chamber saying "community is bad!! PvP trash!!!" but what community are they talking about? Redditors? They aren't the Souls community, just random people usually looked down upon by everyone else due to their confident ignorance. The Twitch chat of streamers getting into the game? 95% of them haven't even played the game. I can't think of any other "community" example that fits the description these commenters are talking about, because all the ones I've been consist of the best people I've met in gaming.
If anything these comments are a glimpse at the fact PvE'ers are generally way more toxic than PvP'ers, while trying to gaslight everyone else into thinking the opposite
Well another one sees through the cracks. It might sound like a conspiracy theory, but some of these people have nonsensical Profiles, like Cocomelon in their HIp-Hop & Rap Playlists, among other things like Twerking in a Gun Playlists, in other words, a lot of people in this Comment Section are Bots, they keep parroting each other and missing the point of conversations. Melee have to get close to the danger. Mages can sit in the back and end the fight before it ever started. That's just facts. I've played them all, all classes and builds. Mage is boring af imo because it's too easy , but again you do you.
Funnily enough is how a lot of those same people make fun of some players for taking longer than they did (they can easily be lying) to complete the game , when they also probably used a lot of guides , overpowered items or whatever and calling you skill less. Also unless you're both famous and extremely skilled no gives a f*ck how you play the game , if it took you 3 hours to 100% or 500 , no one cares but you. Gatekeeping is so common in all videogames though, I'd argue the CS GO and competitive games hardcore community is even more toxic
The souls community is weirdly competitive for a game that is mostly single-player. Everyone has to be the next letmesoloher. People want bragging rights while gatekeeping how you should beat the game. It doesn't make the game more appealing to shun people for simply playing it differently. If you want competition, go to arenas and duke it out, do invasions. But dont cry when someone kills you with a busted you dont know-how to counter, git gudder.
I am personally of the opinion that beating bosses solo without summons is the most fun way to play the game, as is going in mostly blind on your first playthrough. I think there is a fair argument to be made there given that learning the bosses' moves after dying repeatedly makes the thrill of combat that much better once you get into the groove. That's my favorite thing about these games. I love overcoming the different enemies. When my friends ask me about the games, I'll lead with my first recommendation. HOWEVER you will never find me hating on other people for the way that they play. I do think most wizards do not know how to play the game very well, which is amusing to me but that is not something that warrants hate or any kind of serious argument. Games are just games.
Souls game aren't always hard, you are just making it hard. This game is easy if you fully utilize what the game gives you. Yes, I know, this is coming from someone who beat all Souls game on NG+7-10, with different accounts using different builds.
I get exactly what you mean. It may not be easy, but it's not "that hard" either, I feel its reputation is a bit off. For me, I don't pretend I did exceptionally well on my first playthrough/s, but I always managed to push through, using whatever new things I like, for example people loathe Capra Demon, but I did it on my first try simply using the Elite Armor Set. I even did a LP where I pretty much rushed through it without grinding and overlevelling, in 7h30 and I still think I have more to learn and to try out.
@@Neon_Henchman Man, Souls games are set to "I'm too young to die" difficulty. Way too easy, TBH. These events are partly why I just don't look favorably to modern gaming, but thankfully, I'm still able to put my skills to the test, albeit with older games, for example I did all Purple S+ in Assault Android Cactus, which... was tiring, but I'm glad to have seen through all of it, and as you spoke of an FPS, I also have one that I love; I keep replaying Serious Sam 3, which was considered a black sheep of the series, but I love how it rewards my recklessnes to this day, such as timing my hammer swings to one-shot invisible Kleers (on Mental Difficulty). I buy the game, i learn its mechanics and what the devs give us to use, i use what they gave me, i have fun, the end. Sekiro has a limited approach on how to finish the game but still gives you ways to make bosses easier countering specific mechanics with your tools and i never see anyone complaining about “right way to play”.
Imagine caring about community in single player games. Community was always a bad idea in almost every single single player game. Wake up dudes, Elden ring and Dark souls are not MMOs.
😂😂😂😂 You shit players keep using “ItS a SiNgLe PlAyEr GaMe” for everything huh. First, No. it’s not a single player game, it’s never been, other wise co op and PvP wouldn’t be apart of it. Nor messages, bloodstains or even the ghosts of players playing the game wouldn’t be constantly everywhere. Sekiro was a single player game, ER, DS1-3 and Bloodborne have never been single player games. They have always had some sort of connectivity with others. Claiming it’s a “single player game” is a cope to complain about balance patches and an effort to eliminate invasions so players like yourself can pretend you aren’t absolute dogshit at the game.
Same with monster hunter community when they see you having defense, divine blessing, heroics, or any of the defensive skills you are now considered a lowlife. Especially that guy who bragged about having played world for 5000+ hours, and made a video on how Asmongold should play the game.
Souls community has two sides.
Etc, etc.

This is how I see it for most souls games:
Mage builds make some parts easier and some parts a lot harder
Melee builds make some parts easier and some parts a lot harder
Hybrid builds make most things normal
But mages do have ice spells :0 and bleed if you count the blood sorceries but those need a bit of faith.

Bro really gets upset and people just being people. Bill got trolled hard here.
If you didn't beat the game with the Donkey Kong Bongo controller, can you REALLY say you beat it?
The reason for the community's elitism is a combination of two things. The first is the industry, which ignorantly pushes Souls games as the new status quo for what makes a game challenging. The second is the influx of players into the community over the past few years who play or acknowledge so few video games that they don't realise how many other games, old and new, demand more from the player than any Souls game.
Its definitely also the people who act like they know anything about a video game they've never touched
Elden Ring enemies didn't play fair, so neither did I.
@@HollyAnneThePaganChaosWitch Is it not possible to play DS Remastered offline? Idk but I am sure those few messages that you might want to read on the ground aren't worth it if you dislikes invasions so much. :(
@@rationalrama you'd be surprised at how worth it they can be but yeah it is a hassle to manage. I find the experience worth it most of the time. I love hearing the bells and saluting my fellow undead for their achievements and getting the funny messages after a really hard area (I'm thinking of all the ones in Anor Londo).

Like, why do you care what this person chooses.

Exactly this
If no one cared about this, then such discussions wouldn't even exist. However, I've seen many players who actually believe that there is a “right” and a “wrong” way to play the game.
@@Alexander-pm4pp What I should say is: Normal souls players don't judge others how they play and they don't look for excuses if they play with easy builds. Simple as that
@@UncleGael1999 No one would make excuses if there was no need for it. However, I've never seen casual players get mad at someone else's playstyle.
And then there's the "beat the boss before it got nerfed" mentality
I dont think summons should be in the game
@@glungusgongus I disagree, summons should definitely be in the game. And realistically, they're just an option, them being there doesn't mean they have to be interacted with
@logicwizard783 I dont care. Get rid of the low skill summoms.
@@glungusgongus Why does it even matter anyway?
@@logicwizard783 The games were better without them.
I appreciate this video sincerely
let me play devils advocate
my friend played through ds3 and bloodborne multiple times with average melee builds and he considers them two of his favourite games of all time. recently he played ds1 for the first time and decided to use the black knight weapons after hearing how good they were. we killed O&S in roughly 60 seconds and he was utterly disappointed with his experience with the game and dropped it shortly after.
@Neon_Henchman I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way 😊
Exactly this I know I'm late to this but me and my friends still approach the game like this because it's more enjoyable for us.
Saddest part is souls games aren’t even close to being the hardest type of game
@@Neon_Henchmancause other fanbase don’t bully gamers like the Fromsoftware fans do. The argument could also be made that Fromsoftware zealots demand ever game be like dark souls. Fromsoftware is basically the Wes Anderson of game developers.

mages are actually easy mode.Just like summons and op builds
Wow I remember this one haha. It's just a game. Games are meant to be fun at the end of the day. I played every build I could think of with this game. Any build can be OP barring straight hands. I love these games so much, despite some of the annoying shit(that elevator in mergos loft).
Who pissed in this guy's cornflakes?

Strength builds are easier, trading and tanking hits is easier than timing perfect dodges for the entire duration of a 25 hit combo from a boss lol

Play how you want. Your game. Calling someone a bitch because they took the easy route in a VIDEO GAME is smol pp energy. However,
Mage is easy mode tho, in every Souls game.
Time to find a new series to play.
Real! I do think our discussions around hard bosses though can be disrupted by people who basically played a different game from us!
@@Neon_Henchman
Man, Souls games are set to "I'm too young to die" difficulty. Way too easy, TBH. Souls players are just incompetent losers who think Longswords are original and try hard to be Guts instead of actually learning good strats. You want a hard game? Doom Eternal: Ancient Gods but Modded, Synthetik 1 and 2, Doom Plutonia, Blood, etc.
@@RedSunUnderParadise On that same train of thought, Donkey Kong Country 2 is a game I loved and of course beat as a kid, I remember vividly my mother cleaning when I got to the Credits, but I swear adults today can't even beat the game, they literally get outplayed by a toddler that was in kindergarten.
Speaking of invisible enemies, Resident Evil's Invisi Mode was a fun time for me, I had to make my own maps and ended up with 140 handgun bullets, but I liked how it forced me to do my own research before entering the mode.

Since dark souls 1 ive always played with str build and heavy armor. I decided to play elden ring with dex and int for the first time and its the most fun i had recently with souls games. Its not a common archetype in most rpgs and the customization allows you to create the perfect balance of spells, weapons, types of attacks, schools of magic, fashion etc etc. as a employed man with responsibilities and with no gaming ego, i couldn’t care less about what a neckbeard say about how i should play a game.
