    My problem with the temporary vestiges is that if you go through an area and complete it and carry on, if you need to go back to get something, you have to start at the very beginning of the area and run through all the enemies. So I found it was best to go through each area and 100% complete it on my first visit to prevent having to trek back for something where it ends up being a pain in the ass since you have to run all the way though some big and tough areas.

    I think many of the complaints you've made are warranted, but i think the reasonings for those things (mainly attributing it to the developers mindset) is honestly very very cynical, with no room for any "devils advocacy", considering none of us are devs for the game.
    I think the issues that plague the game boil down to a pitentially rushed release date, as well as very little QA testing, if any. I remember when Lies of P had a demo out, all my Souls friends HATED it, and it got better. LotF didnt have that, to my knowledge, and the reason for that is probably because of the rushed release for one reason or the other.
    The other point I have to make in defense of the game is about the cheesy narrative. As a longtime Souls vet myself, a 360 Dark Souls release day vet, i can absolutely tell you that Souls games all have cheesy storytelling. Everything revolves around that kinda cheesy, fantasy telling. Its not the best story, and everyone gives it a pass because you learn about it through item descriptions, NPC dialogue, or VaatiVidya LOL.
    There are many things LotF does correctly imo. Like you said, the visuals are stunning, but we can't pick and choose which Souls game were going to compare the game to. In terms of DS1, the world interconnectivity is underwhelming, but in terms of DS3 its much, much better than its linearity. We have to keep in mind that the Souls community constantly bickers as to which Souls game is the best one, so we cant just sumerize all the games and parts into its best theoretical version to compare to a rebooted IP, thats just dishonest.
    I honestly think, after the game reaches a stable place for consoles/PC, you should review this game again. There has been no mention of the daily (sometimes twice a day) patches slung towards the PC edition, with the console patch out now. Theres no mention of the developers acknoledging their mistakes. Theres no mention of things developers stated are coming to the game that might impact how you feel about enemies, vestiges, and NG+ (even though you havent played it yet). Nothing. Its a tremendously rare thing for a developing team to put out 3 patches in the launch week, let alone 7+ patches in the first week alone. I understand where the points come from, and why it wasnt mentioned, but in the same breath you cant say they DONT care or DONT get it because they have specifically targeted what players want most and are patching in these features daily. Can we at least get props for devs working on getting the issues ironed out as efficiently as possible for once?

    • @ChaosSoulYT
      @ChaosSoulYT  Рік тому +2

      I will give the devs no props at all for the speed of updates, because they specifically hid the games technical issues until after launch. I was offered a review code of this game, but then when I requested one for xbox, they refused to give it to me. All reviewers only were allowed pc versions of the game because they knew about the horrendous console performances but shadily kept it a secret until after launch.
      For me that stuff makes me lose all respect for the developers.

    • @sideofpeas
      @sideofpeas Рік тому +1

      @ChaosSoulYT oh, I know you never got your Xbox code. You said it in the same video in which you stated you'd do your best to make sure that fact wouldn't provide a bias towards the review.
      Was that shady? Yes. That action was inherently shady. But why does their previous action colour the multitude of positive actions they are making now? Are they not allowed to push out all these patches in order to fix the game? Do you see any other developer doing this? Take Insomniac Games, wherein they released Spider-man 2 recently and have yet to patch out the Cuban Flag instead of the Puerto Rican flag for Miles Morales. That one single thing they haven't patched yet, despite the comparatively easy feat, which is plain lazy. If there's anything you CAN'T say about Hexworks and CI Games, it's that they didn't realize the massive mistakes they made at launch and that they didn't push out 20+ patches thus far.

    • @ChaosSoulYT
      @ChaosSoulYT  Рік тому +1

      Okay that is true, I did say I wouldn't allow it to make me biased. Its difficult though. For me they are just doing what should have already been done, but yes it is good that they are releasing so many updates. They shouldn't have had too though.

    • @sideofpeas
      @sideofpeas Рік тому +1

      @ChaosSoulYT That's something everyone can agree on: it shouldn't have to be done, it should have been optimized from the very beginning, and it should have had its issues ironed out before release. It should have already done, and if they were truly a shit company/team of devs, they would have run off with the money and have done the bare necessities to make the game run how it should.
      I'm only trying to point out that, yes, this is true, but they're doing much more than even I, someone who pre-ordered LotF and NOT LoP (I don't like bloodborne as much, sue me) would have expected. They're even going as far as to have console cross play included in the latest patch, something that wasn't even included in the general gameplan for them, as well as reworking NG+ and even adding modifiers and randomizers natively, something us console peasants couldn't get that PC players could. It's clear to me that the dev team, while patching and fixing optimization, is also including community suggestions and requests, something I would have never expected from any studio.
      That's all I wanted to bring forth. Again, many of your points I agree with, solid video. I just hope that you give it another honest go once things have been fixed and do a follow up after the disaster that was Launch, I'm sure it won't just be a fluid experience at that point, but potentially a much more positive experience considering the features they're adding/tweaking

      @@ChaosSoulYTI could be wrong, but it sounds like you should be blaming the publishers instead of the developers. My biggest issue with this, it's that you realize how bad is to control the direction of your swings in this game. In fromsoft games, the lock-on has some noticeable issues, but when you're surrounded or fighting giant things, you simply turn off the lock-on and manually control the direction of your next attack, hitting your enemies without trouble. Here, you try the same, and the forward momentum makes you miss your attacks half the time, so manual aiming isn't a reliable option and it the lock-on doesn't target the foe your need to hit, you're going to have a bad time, even more with the absurd amount of enemies that will attack you at the same time.

      @@kusansimpson2514 Nah man LoP does the levels pretty well. Of course they repeat enemies but it has more variety and just overall less enemies. The linearity also helps in creating shortcuts which actually make sense.
      LIke in LoP you will take 40 minutes to clear a level then get to a difficult boss which you will also need around 40 minutes to beat.
      In LoTF you will take 90 minutes to clear a level, then get to a boss which you need 5 to 10 minutes to beat. The bosses are such a let down even if they are visually very good.
      Defeating a boss is the best feeling in souls-likes and if you leave people feeling "That's it?" after a boss you have failed in being a souls-like in my eyes. The final boss is also an insult, you can choose between a worse version of deacons of the deep, a recolor of an early boss or no boss fight at all.

    • @Avdimax
      @Avdimax Рік тому +5

      But it's kind of fortunate ironically that many of his points, respectively, either aren't valid at all, or aren't valid anymore. NG+ vestiges are changed, you can have all of them still. You can now send back Elevators. The agro range of enemies is now comparatively smaller and they won't chase you all across the map anymore. The density of the enemies has been reduced in certain areas. There has been almost always an optional temporary vestige spot available right before any boss fight, so the run back is essentially optional, it is player choice. About the damage enemies do, there's a fact you also not only have double the life, and more than that, a very strong comeback mechanic; the first time you die doesn't even count because when you enter the umbral upon dying, you can regain almost full health by a single Lond Sword charged attack without using any healing potions. Even in his gameplay right here at 21:45 he regained 50% of his lost health by doing 4 basic light attacks and at the same time he is complaining how many hits it takes to recover, I just don't understand it. Not to mention there are sufficient spots where you can transition to the real world again, so you get back your comeback mechanic again.
      In my opinion the biggest issues with this game right now are lock on system, certain boss fight encounters, performance issues and lack of enemy variety.

    This game has many issues, mainly being the enemy density and aggressiveness resulting in the character being "boxed" and the annoying platforming which is usually just hateful in soulslikes.
    But for your other points, I feel like you just wanted another Elden Ring or Lies of P, without putting the time or mental effort to understand the unique challenges and goals of LotF.
    Even more so than Elden Ring, this game is about builds and unlucking that build. With item combinations (talisman, rings and eyes) you can become overpowered, virtually unkillable. And there's great satisfaction in that.
    The placeable bonfires furthermore make the exploration and progression trivial. With 5 at your disposal to be used in between main bonfires, with some exceptions (wtf were they thinking with the archer + dogs boss fight), you can progress with minimal backtracking and the drop rate of seeds is generously high, you never lack them.
    I honestly quite enjoy the NG+ added challenge, which, in design, was supposed to be the base game mode.
    But luckily was not, as navigating the map for the first time, it's vital to be able to teleport around freely. But once you know wherevto go, adds an element of commitment to an area, before moving away from it. Feels more organic and like an actual journey.
    Still, while not even close in polish to Elden Ring, I believe LotF 2023 to be a gem in the rough

    To be fair i think its a great game! Yes, it has performance issues but most games being realised now does. Even Elden Ring had bad performance issues the first couple months on pc. Taking out the vestiges in NG+ might not have been a popular idea but doesnt neccessarily mean its bad. Demon Souls didnt have bonfires at all! Dark Souls was nicely woven as far as going area to area. But the game was a much smaller scale. Think they did a great job in this game. Not perfect by any means but it works. Im not at the end of the game but i dont get the complaint of enemy density. You have a dodge to kite enemies. Also have really nicely implimented ranged attacks to take them out. That being said they need to fix the lock on. When it works its great. When it works! Snipers shooting you all the way across a map is rediculous. If we obtain that crossbow/bow/spell and cant achieve that range then enimies shouldnt be able to do it. So i dont believe LOtF is perfect by any means, but everyone riding Fromsofts coat tails is just getting annoying. I love them as a studio. Obviously passionate about their games. Especially the souls series! But at the same time none of their games are perfect. They implimented mechanics in their games and then pulled them by the next title. Some people believe it was because it was a bad mechanic for some and id argue they made it easier for the common gamer. I just like how Hexworks made this their passion project. And how theyre fixing what needs fixed. Taking feedback from people and implimenting those changes the community wants. Or coming to a middle ground. Like theyre having it to where you can have the vestiges now in NG+ if you want. Or take them out with a modifier. Adding a hardcore mode. Among alot of other things. Really wanting a strong co op and pvp gameplay experience. Which for the most part pvp was at the backburners for Fromsoftware. With limited co op play. Not to meantion spells were annoying to cycle through. Even in Elden Ring. Feels more fluid in the LOtF. Combat not being perfect feels faster paced but smooth and fun. I dont think it feels cluncky. Not saying everyone will agree but this combat isnt bad. Rolls feel nice unless your over burdened. The attacks feel great. I mean you will still have to go through your full animations if you do combos and stuff.

      There is no reason for you to slide forward to your death everytime you attack with any weapon. And the game likes spamming hazards, ambushes, etc. Everything in this game is either enemies' weak-ass frail pushes pushing a 200kg, fully-armoured player 6 feet across the floor, or the player manually falling to their death.
      If we're talking about the "speed", for sure it feels nice. But the actual application itself DOES NOT feel good. The reliance on slide/push mechanics to punish the player for actually choosing to actively fight skirmishes in platforming levels is just questionable at best.

  • @Locaneo
    @Locaneo Місяць тому

    I agree with basically everything you said. I hated playing this game. Besides the overbloated damage what really solidified my disdain for this game was the movement. Open up Lies of P, Dark Souls 3, and Elden Ring and dodge in every direction then attack in any direction. Characters in Lords of The Fallen THROW themselves. They don't dodge or attack, they lunge and moon leap.
    Then there was the writing...I'm an artist and a storyteller in RL and have been for a long time. The narrative of this game was piss poor, especially the dialogue. The setting was basic, decent, functional, but whenever the characters talk I felt insulted. Written dialogue, cadence, functionality, dialect, context, subtext; all failures. Watch the opening of FFXIV: Endwalker and listen to how each character talks, then listen to the opening of this gutter-trash.
    Credit to the art department, you guys excelled; my only complaint is thematic cohesion and thematic components being only Flesh and Templars when you boil it down, but you did a great job with those two main components. Great job.

    you can send elevators back up though I literally did it all game. touch the button and roll off before the door closes. There are numerous lifts in ds3 with closing doors. Same thing. Performance has been fine for me on pc as well. I have a rtx3080. It runs fine on high settings. I keep it on medium though because it looks better imo. less clutter. They have also fixed the NG+ bonfire issue.
    The thing that upsets me about some peoples critique is shit like bosses being normal enemies. Everyone jerks of Elden ring about it but its suddenly bad if LOTF does it. I was fine with it in both games. It's a non issue. We could do fore more variety there are too many zombie like enemies. But the placement of the boss enemies as normal enemies is really good. I like the ambushes. I like the mimics.
    Actually yes. The mimics are my favorite part about the game. The tell is easy to identify but grabbing an item in the heat of battle is risky. Its the players fault 100% for just being grab happy. I see so many people bitch about mimics when they wont take 2 seconds to glance at the item in an obvious spot. All I can say is, if you bitch about mimics its 1000% a git gud moment. Most of people complaining when it comes to combat or enemy density is a git gud moment.
    The devs already addressed enemy density due to complaints. Its fine now. Stop running past all the enemies then giving a surprise pikachu when they follow you and you get surrounded.
    The only 2 actual issues with the game are 1 weapon move sets. We need more. its sad to pcik up a new weapon and its just a reskin. The movesets are good as is, But we need more
    and 2 PvP is unplayable invasions are somehow worse than DS1. Co-op works great. I played the game solo and played it again the whole way through on a new character co-op and it worked just fine. I only had 2 or 3 instances of a de sync issue. that was fixed by re summoning my brother.

Both are great games in their own way and I have fun in both, it's great times for a gamer right now. Lies of P definitely a bit more polished and enemies a bit better designed but both different artstyles and LOTF art is also really beautiful. The game just need a bit more threatening big knights and other scary stuff. An easy boss, I'd think, spurned progeny can one shot my character with his fist which is ambiguous in how to dodge correctly.. I died over and over to this boss and the hushed saint because of their one shot kills, not because they are difficult. If you are going to make enemies do so much damage don't give the player a heal item which doesn't even heal them up to full, because they are useless. I was one of the first people to finish elden ring so I have gotten good, the enemies in this game just get cheap one shot kills or gank the player with tremendous swarm damage that raising your hp or putting on the heaviest armor won't change.

That reminded me of the classic dark souls boss with 2 dogs. (cant remember the name of the boss) Only this time yore not super dead dead if you don't kill the dogs instantly.
    I also liked the 2 dimension part where you are super stressed because it keeps spawning in more and harder enemies as time goes on. The temporary bonfire system is great but too easy to abuse, because you can buy infinite of them from a early vendor for cheap. In my opinion it's the most refreshing souls like in a long time. It actually has new things with the 2 world concept.

    You're right about everything you say I think. I am probably only about a quarter through (I haven't freed the blacksmith or gotten the ability to get boss weapons yet) but I've played for many many hours already. You are expressing some pretty reasonable criticisms.
    I wanted to make two jokes.
    The first would be pretending to champion the game and say something along the lines of:
    "Why don't you just 'Git Gud'...then?!!!" LOL
    Because I watched your footage..and you 𝘢𝘳𝘦...good! Ha Ha.
    And as you've said... the game does look very beautiful. And some things are pretty amazing. I think another reviewer said something along the lines of... he just doesn't think the designers ever play Souls games.
    I think the idea of having The Upside Down (Ed. - He means the Umbral realm) is definitely an interesting twist. I am going to make a second bad joke regarding the extra 15 quid or so Lords charges vs. Lies of P's price and say "Did you ever wonder if that money is going to H. R. Giger's estate? For their licensing his designs for their underworld? Joking but their inspiration is pretty obvious.
    But I did pay my money. So I want to try and stick with it. I played Elden RIng (amazing) couple times and then went back and played Dark Souls.
    I am happy to hear that if LotF doesn't seem fun I have Lies of P to look forward to.
    I have been invaded several times. None expected. And once when I was deeply peering into an NPC's menu buying her wares.
    I am happy to report that I have defeated them all. Probably by the skin of my teeth. And the adrenaline rush from that battle I will have say probably made the purchase worthwhile. (Even if your review just makes me think...uninstal..now...and Get Lies of P!

    Your logic about the bodies floating and us not is illogical. The Umbral world can percieve the word of Axiom, that does not mean that it is the same the other way around eg. We need the lamp to perceive and interact with it. When we are in Umbral we are percieving those bodies yes, but they are still in the world of Axiom, thus they stay afloat. Us shining the lantern on the body doesnt make them interact with Umbral, you need to hold the Lamp for that to take place.
    A lot of your complaints are really just pure subjective opinion; Not actual review objective criteria. I don't think that makes for a compelling review. Best of luck in the future.
    eg. You complained about the "limited" vetiges.... no, you can buy infinite amounts of those, from the beginning, you can farm them EASILY. It's barely an inconvenience. If you are going to make a complaint, at least make it a rational one. Yea?

      Also you seem to be completely misunderstanding the health regain mechanic. The health regain has no time limit. If you handle it as aggressively as LoP of BB then yeah of cours you'll just take damage again. Here you could essentially run around for eternity with your grey health bar and carefully pick your attacks and you will get everything back. You saying that it's useless because you "will" take damage again, that's a skill issue. The regain system is much better than LoP or BB. But yeah if you start frantically mashing the attack like in BB then yeah you will take damage again.

And you can't just keep rolling because three enemies, with unbalanced, overlapping attacks means eventually you will get hit, and I guarantee you did too when fighting. The three enemies together are not balanced well so ignoring the dogs means you're hoping to be lucky, and finish the woman before the two dogs end up hitting you and stun locking you so you get hit by an arrow etc.

      Congrats, you found a way to exploit the bad boss design. Just because it's possible to exploit or cheese a boss doesn't mean the boss design is good. Bed of Chaos is easy if you cheese it. It's still a shit boss.

    …. Did this man really just say this combat was more floaty than DS2??? Helllll no man hell no. Yes, the main issue is the performance. They 100% need to fix that. And did you finish the game?? Cause recovering your wither health when you have an upgraded weapon you get your full health back in 2 hits man. Early game it’ll take 4-5 hits for sure if you have a shit weapon but as soon as you upgrade your weapon you are solid. Man I have had a 90% withered health bar and hit 3 times and got back to full. This game is nowhere as bad as you are saying it is. This is the Lies of P fans dogging LotF way more than needed. And crazy LotF fans are doing the same to Lies of P… like they are both great games what the hell. I do agree Lies of P is more polished for sure but man cmon. Lies of P wasn’t using Unreal Engine 5 either. Guarantee it wouldve been just as buggy if they did. Not excusing the state of LotF cause they shouldve delayed this game but still.

      If the game has issues because its in unreal engine 5... then maybe it shouldn't have been made in unreal engine 5...
      And yeah to me the combat is worse and more floaty then ds2.
      And yeah later it does take less hits to regain health... which is counter intuitive to a regain system. So the regain system was built only to work properly and be useful at the END of a playthrough? When you're already stronger? Where's the logic there?

    • @bloodchron1880
      @bloodchron1880 Рік тому

      @@ChaosSoulYT uhhh people need to move to Unreal Engine 5… It is already the next thing that eveyone is going to move to. So yes they should have made it in UE5. Like I said in my previous comment, they should’ve delayed the game cause of this.
      DS2 is way more floaty not sure how much of that ganky game you have played.
      And certainly not END game for gaining all your health back. Literally beginning of the game when you unlock the blacksmith. Upgrade your weapon once or twice and it is doing very well at gaining your withered health back. You don’t have to be so dramatic about that hahaha! It stays handy throughout the game and is a concept done well other than getting withered while parrying. I do agree with that. What is the point of a parry if you take any wither damage… doesn’t make much sense. But otherwise it is done similarly to Bloodborne.

I hated surge 1, Surge 2 isn't anywhere as good as Nioh 1&2 or Lies of P in terms of non Fromsoftware souls likes but I do think it's superior to most of the non Fromsoft attempts at this genre. It's character creator is better then LOTF (tho still could be much better), gameplay feels more polished and focused, better enemies and Bosses and builds ect. I will say tho that surge 2 is worse then surge 1 in level design IMHO 😂. I think it's worth trying out, more content for your channel if anything

    The bonfires are back in NG+ with a new update. Consoles have to wait. Either way, NG+ sucks in all souls games. They should just make a boss rush bc that’s what NG+ is really and some trophy/achievement hunting.

    All I hear is a bunch of crybabies saying it’s bad because they can’t sit idle in the spirit realm because it’s too hard. Duh 🙄 where do you think the dead demons go after you slice them? And the game literally tells you that more enemies and tougher enemies will come if you stay in the dead realm for too long that’s what the eyeballs 👀 mean it’s literally a wanted level like GTA. And it tells you that it’s rising so these complaints are stupid. Then the weapon sounds not sounding like other games you’ve played is also another dumb argument as well.

    i hate this game with every sell in my body.. it looks stunning thanks to UE5 but goddamn that gameplay is miserable... clunky animations, poor or sometimes non existent sound design, very confusing level design and the cherry on top is the infinite number of enemies. this game was designed to annoy the fuck out of the player. And that Ui, looks like something from 2006...Also don't even get me started on that final boss...
    PS: i'm a huge fromsoft fan so naturally i love exploring and navigating complex levels, but this game get you lost in a very frustrating way and most shortcuts you find are useless, other paths just lead to a dead end.
    this game had big potential, but the guys behind it have no idea how to make a good souls game. they had a bunch of cool ideas and tried to sloppily stitch them together and they failed miserably.

      The changes aren't good enough. They are still removing some vestiges in ng+ and more in ng+2 and then by ng+3 there are no regular vestiges once again.
      Anyone who actually understands what makes souls so good knows that removing vestiges goes against the core design principles of souls games. Removing vestiges is artificial difficulty. Not well balanced, hard but fair difficulty.
      The fact hexworks said they wanted to keep removing vestiges entirely from ng+3 onwards to 'keep their original vision' says it all. They like unfair, frustrating mechanics. They don't understand what makes souls games good.

    All in all I think your overall assessment of the game was fair and your advice very reasonable and there are several things that you said that I agree with. However, there are many things you said that make me think that you didn't completely engage with several of the systems in this game. If you did then I am just confused about some of your opinions and statements.
    1. You can purchase an unlimited number of the reagent needed to create as many temporary bonfires as you want and they are not even expensive (1200 for each I think)
    2. The developers have now changed new game + so that there is a new game 0 and now each new game + level has fewer and fewer bonfires rather than none right off the bat.
    3. The developers have added a delay in when a you activate an elevator so you CAN send the elevator back up.
    4. When you start new game + and they took away the permanent bonfires, you still have all the shortcuts you opened. That is why there are shortcuts that feel strange. They are there for when the permanent places are gone for ease of traversal.
    5. The developers have lowered the number of mobs in key areas in the basic playthrough. I agree that there were and still are too many.
    6. Parry and block are not the way you described them at all in my experience. Blocking with a solid shield and armor mitigates a significant amount of damage AND the damage you do take is only wither damage. In addition, your wither recovery scales with the damage you are doing. I can recover my life dual wielding light weapons quickly and with a shield and heavy weapon even more quickly because there is less to recover in the first place. If you have the armor and shield for it, blocking is actually overpowered because you cannot die while blocking as long as your stamina holds out and your stance is not broken. So a few well timed blocks to take the brunt of a heavy hit followed by high damage strikes and you will never actually lose health. Obviously a heavy blocking style of play goes best with heavy armor and weapons or shield. If you are using light armor and weapons than blocking is an "oh sh$%#t" mechanic and you will be mostly dodging. You can also get runes and rings that increase wither recovery if that is the playstyle you are going for.
    7. Did you use magic or ranged weapons at all? To me, in this game, not playing with any ranged attacks is the equivalent of playing without dodging. Ranged weapons and magic are both highly effective and, due to unlimited recoverability of ammo, not something you have to save for a rainy day. It's a great way to thin out enemies, apply nasty status effects and to recover withered health. Every playstyle is intended to have several associated ranged styles and they do a heck of a lot of damage.
    I do agree with you that Lies of P is a fantastic and much more polished and complete experience, but I will say however that the developer seems to be working very hard to both fix problems and respond to player feedback. So, I do admire them for that.
