Just some clarification: KillPixel Games isn't really a group of people, it's just me and my programmer friend. It's true that WRATH was my baby and I made most of the design decisions (for better or for worse) in addition to doing the majority of the art and sound -- textures, models, animation, fx, name/logo design, etc (I only did a texture set or so for episodes 2 and 3 and the rest were done by someone else). The Symbol (tentacle enemy) and the Lance (rail gun) were my final contributions to the game before I ended my partnership with 3D Realms in 2020. I agree that WRATH has many problems. Some are just plain poor choices/implementation on my part, some not, and some are the result of regrettable circumstances. I respect the people that were brought in to complete the game after I left -- I know the mess they inherited and I'm not sure anyone else could've done much better in that situation. I deeply believed WRATH had everything going for it, everything it needed to be a truly great FPS. I believed it so much that I dedicated my entire life to it. I went all in. I can rightly place the blame for WRATH's failure on certain 3D Realms leadership, but I can also blame myself. To varying degrees, I permitted the fatal blows WRATH was dealt during development. Developing a game is one thing, but developing one while simultaneously trying to protect it is something else. I truly, truly loved WRATH and believed in it and really did the very best I could, but I eventually had to face the reality of the situation, let go of it and step away. WRATH was an extremely painful lesson, but I still hope to do another game someday and succeed where I had failed.
I don't know anything about what happened behind the scenes, I just patiently waited for the game to come out (1.0) and it was a great experience. One of the best Retro FPS so far for sure.
I still think, for at least what I've played of Wrath during early access before the rough times, and the amount I've played now, it's still pretty neat. Shame about what happened still. My sympathies, but also thanks for doing what you do.
The idea of having these HUGE levels is kinda novel and cool, at the expense of not being able to play for hours on end, I like it actually. The guns remind me of Darkwatch (PS2), were you inspired by that game? The revolver and DB Shotgun especially. Seems pretty fun, definitely on my wishlist.
Don't know what you where aiming for but i like playing it. For me you delivered a good game and one that i cherish. The only thing i miss are the progs.dat source files and a compiler, to toy around with it.
Is Aftershock coming to consoles at all? Big fan of the original and would love to get more of that in my veins. It's a shame you guys weren't given the "sequel"
I've played you 'Buenos Aires Explosive Remake' a long time ago and it was sweet. It's very nice to see how far you and everyone from Voidpoint have come. You guys are among the elite of the boomer shooter industry.
on the one hand, Katie not being real makes me appreciate and respect Civvie's output even more since I assume that means he does all the editing himself. on the other hand, I will never emotionally recover from this.
@@TheExFatal Absolutely. It's one of the things that make him so much fun to watch! Also, he's observant, has strong reasoning abilities and can eloquently express concepts that I - as a fellow writey wordy person - would likely struggle to be clear about. Or at least, he does it more concisely, which is also an art worth mastering.
The part starting from 14:10 where Civvie drops his usual character and earnestly tells us how he doesn't want to fall into the usual UA-cam guy thing of being a hub of negativity and spite who just casually shits on the hard work of others for some dollars is possibly the most wholesome thing I've seen on this channel and makes it all the more righteous when he rips into Graven. Because at the end of the day, its still a broken product they ask 25 dollars for.
Yes, it's so important to stress that negativity (while sometimes fun) is unproductive and harmful in general. Good to clarify that it's a persona from time to time!
We'd had a peek behind the curtain with his coverage of Death Wish, back when he stated he normally doesn't cover mods because he's not about to tear into a fanmade project done entirely for free and with obvious passion and a _lot_ of time invested into development. Because mods are the logical extreme of a game done with great intentions, but rarely the great design to carry those intentions. Civvie is a considerate dude behind the kayfabe.
I'm really sad to hear about the state Graven is in I bought it in Early Access a couple of years ago and came back a couple of times. I enjoyed it despite the clunky melee and lackluster magic, but I thought it was. . . you know. . . going to maybe *do something* to address those issues. Unfortunately it looks like the fantastic visuals might be the only solid thing the game has going for it.
@@jeremyabrahamson7147 A lot of them were, but if the 2001 build of DNF had hit shelves as it is it would have gone down like Blood 2. 2001 DNF absolutely could have been a better game than the DNF that actually released, but it needed more time to cook. Much like games that Slipgate releases: it had the vibes, but was fucking raw.
@@jeremyabrahamson7147they had tons of B and C type bugs, i.e. bugs that don't completely prevent the player from finishing the game, but never any A type bugs, since you couldn't reprint hundreds of thousands of discs/cartridges (you could, but no budget would ever allow that).
@@abdou.the.hereticThe hair broke overtime with modern rendering, the voices were placeholder as far as I can tell and what went on in 2002 might’ve been closer to 50% done?
I guess it’s because the dude had a lot of respect for them in his younger years, so it hurts seeing their modern iteration not always making the best choices. Reminds me of my feelings on JK Rowling. I loved reading Harry Potter growing up and watching the movies, but it really sucks knowing this author who wrote stories I have a lot of fond memories with basically just hates people like me (I’m trans).
I bought it after Civvie's video, and damn, I did not regret it. We need more zany, unbalanced mechanics in single-player games. They're a sorely under-used spice.
Zortch is fantastic and is some of the most fun I've had with a shooter in some time. I bought at least five more copies for friends for Christmas last year just because I need more people to experience it!
Hearing Civvie break character and confirming that Katie isn't real was a bit shocking, even tho I always suspected that she was part of the bit I thought that maybe there was someone else actually helping with the channel (a sort of second author that preferred to remain hidden) and that Katie was a stand-in for that person. I mean, we had confirmation that Noelle had done the music for the channel and we have had other VA's doing parts sometimes. Maybe if we all focus really hard we can make Katie real, like some sort of collective hallucination.
@@corvusdominus9835 I had completely forgotten about tulpas. When writing that comment I didn't remember that things like that can actually happen in real life, oops.
Honestly, hearing that 4th wall break to talk to the audience feel refreshing. I found Civvie during a dark time and it's always refreshing to see a new video drop. May not see this, but thanks Civvie, the audience appreciates you.
Well yeah, Have you played the SOF sewer level ?, it's awesome, the one genuinely bad sewer though is the one from Redneck rampage with all those switches, PTSD inducing
To me, the worst part about Graven is how smug the developer is. I was a part of that game’s discord server, and every time someone came to him with criticism, he just brushed it off as the player’s fault. For example, there’s an in-game manual in the pause menu that explains certain mechanics the actual game never tells you about, like how if you hold down the “use” key when opening a chest, the chest won’t “burst out” items and they automatically go into your inventory. The manual also tells you that crouch jumping is a mechanic. So whenever people complained, the developer would just say something like “oh, well the manual in the pause menu tells you these things, so if you didn’t know that, you didn’t play the game correctly.” It was the same thing with the spells; to the game’s credit, they actually became really powerful when upgraded, but you would never know that nor be incentivized to spend resources on them because of how bad of a first impression they make. The developer again brushed this off as the player’s fault for not experimenting. And don’t get me started on his attitude towards the lack of a save system; “that’s a mechanic that would require a whole different game.” Absolute douche bag.
I feel like this is is a common sentiment, but I don't want to have to do homework to play a game. If I'm paying for a product that I would like any interesting mechanics to be thoroughly playtested and introduced in a way that gives me a fair chance to learn it properly. Also the dev hasn't earned the right to be smug about any of this because Graven looks awful lol. It's one thing to be weirdly gatekeepy and eccentric about a game that's actually good, but it's something else when the game seems about as polished as sand paper.
usually the people that bother me are the people that feed devs that act like this, lately the git gud crowd have been stating every bug is a feature because it makes the game more challenging, while its obviously just broken or tedious/unfun.
It's absolutely astonishing to me that you not only edit your own videos, but also make closed captions for them on top of assets for the prison bits, while having a pretty good output of content. Thanks for the videos man. You brighten a lot of people's days with your work.
Having Civvie caution and advise his menagerie of lost children on the dangers of nostalgia based marketing as well as the joyful (and cheaper) alternatives out there, really gives me all the positive vibes I need to survive the gut wrenching reveal that Katie is just a product of Civvie's correctional facility induced insanity
Speaking of a cheap and joyful alternative, play Ashes 2063. It is easily the best post-apoc shooter in recent memory, and IMO the very best Boom Shoot as well. Yes, despite Ion Fury and Zortch existing, I still say Ashes is better. That's how muc I like it. Best part? It is entirely free.
I think one of the main reasons the Civie character works so well even though he's meant to be like a grumpy dude living in some sort of dystopian prison works so well is because you clearly are having so much fun, It sort of reminds me of Old Cinema Sins Vs new Cinema Sins, there's a clear passion and joy there that come through.
I think Civvie's bit is genius, honestly. If you don't like his, and I mean him playing the bit, opinion, then at least you get something from him being tortured and shocked. I have watched and rewatched many if not most of his catalog of videos because he is very good at writing an incarcerated critic.
I think it's not so much "old/new Cinema Sins", more "first generation Internet reviewer" in general; being a content creator whose content has literal "lore" within it was all the rage from 2007-2013 (the likes of AVGN and TGWTG/CA); a character like "CV-11" would have fitted right in around that time.
I was just thinking about how old cinema sins was based on legitimate complaints and plot holes and bullshit in the movie, whereas new cinema sins stretches so hard to find flaws. Makes it hard to watch and easy to unsubscribe. Civvie is fucking amazing however. I enjoy the old and crap stuff equally.
I've never really known CinemaSins to be anything more than click/view bait. He's always tried to find "flaws" in well known movies whether they be new, old, well made, or flops. Civvie plays what he likes, or at least stuff that's related to what he likes *and knows about*
@@jorger1818 That was the point of old Cinema Sins, it was to be a person that points out the tiniest and dumbest of flaws in good movies. It was more of a joke about that type of person. Now it's purely 'I need to put something out' Where as Civie is clearly passionate about what he puts oout.
Honestly, thank you Civvie. Your humor and videos have gotten me through some pretty rough times. I'm glad you have such a loyal fan base because you deserve it.
Iv been watching civvie for close to 7ish years now and i can safely say he has become my favorite creator. Between the lovely acting and the world building he has done for his cast i am so happy to hear he ACTUALLY enjoys makeing his videos. I look forward to these videos now and make it a point to watch every one that comes out to keep up on the sub plots and to hear genuine reviews of games i remember playing when i was younger.
It’s so (I don’t even know the word, jaw dropping I guess) that civvie was so angered that he broke character, revealed the secrets of his channel, had a really sentimental moment thanking the viewers, and exclaimed how he actually enjoys making these videos and it’s hard to balance playing a character that hates his job while he actually likes it. Not even DNF can do that.
What an emotional rollercoaster. Civvie breaking character for the first time to address the audience makes me appreciate him even more (which I didn't know was possible). His commitment to the bit is something I have rarely seen elsewhere. Also Katie isn't real? Damn. Was she ever real? And Phantom Fury sucks? And the new episodes of WRATH suck? And also the original dev is here down the in comments giving his account? Truly a monumental video.
Civvie breaking character to fully express he's distain of Ironworks makes me imagine a Knight taking off all he's armor and throwing away he's sword just to beat he's opponent with he's bare fists. It's real-shit and it's somthing you'd never see coming.
It's kinda like when MandaloreGaming, normally a stoic and deadpan footman, breaks out into laughter. That one moment in the Marathon 1 review made every hair on my arms stand up, as he transitioned from subdued chuckling to a menacing, manic cackle. You don't see it coming, especially when it isn't one of his descent-into-madness Halloween videos like Ring or Cabela's Dangerous Hunts.
Hey, Civvie. I do not even play the games you review, I just like your videos. Hearing you talk about how you enjoy making them is heartwarming. I hope you never lose your joy for this.
Man, this video caught me off guard. As a long time fan of your work, the heart to heart moment in this one was a genuine pleasure. However, as a level design contractor for Slipgate Ironworks, it's also a disheartening watch. I worked on Phantom Fury and it's a shame that the demo released as it did. A lot of people were excited by the reveal trailer and the response to the recent release date trailer has been comparatively grim. I do appreciate that you give the artists their due credit. There are some ridiculously talented and dedicated people on the team and it should go without saying that nobody ever sets out to make a bad game (unironically at least). Of course I hope that the game releases to a positive critical reception , but I'm honestly just glad to have had the opportunity to work alongside the team.
And nobody WANTS a game to fail. I'm genuinely excited for Phantom Fury. I didn't get to play the demo before it was taken down. But I wish you and the team the best of luck with the remainder of your development time with the game, and of course hope things turn out in the end.
Glad you can accept criticism. A great game requires a lot of things to go right. I know of mediocre games with great soundtracks, for instance. Better luck with your next project.
For what it’s worth dude, I actually did really like the level design and interactivity in Phantom Fury’s demo, even if I felt the combat was lacking. I do hope the people in charge of THAT aspect took the critique to heart and improved it.
Well I guess I don't have to rant too hard about Slipgate/3D Realms in regards to Core Decay over in my niche of gaming cuz you've basically said everything I could have said about them and you did did a fine job doing it. Also oh god I am so glad the Graven pivoted away form my wheelhouse.
Man, hearing Civvie break character and address the viewers directly was...something else. Also Katie not being real feels like I've left behind another childhood belief, like the Easter Bunny or trickle down economics.
Civvie, if I as a commenter can also be allowed to break character for a moment - we appreciate all the work you put into this show and your genuine attempts to make something unique and enjoyable and - speaking personally now - seeing a new video pop up in my sub box from you legitimately puts a smile on my face. additionally, as an enjoyer of the boom shoots, I believe you have had a deep positive impact on the genre over the last 5 or so years which I and many others have benefitted from. so... thank you for all your efforts brother.
Civvie, as someone who is trying his damn hardest to actually start a solo dev project, i can tell you should be proud of all the work you do and I should be thankful of it too... It was your passion for this small niche of videogames what finally got me to embark on a project, and big part of the understanding I have about the genre is not coming just from my own experience with it, but because of your videos. So yeah don't go out there thanking anyone brother, you are the one putting honest to god brilliant entertainment out there for free. Honestly, a fan of your work. Edit: I promise the sewer level will be short lmao
civvie going mask off and genuinely just talking to us about stuff feels really really good and the impossible rarity of it makes it so much better than if he did it often also real talk-civvie sounds so much different from character-civvie, and it's actually kinda comfy
And that got me actually thinking that I have more respect for Blood 2 than I will for Phantom Fury if it will turn out even half as much of a disaster as Blood 2 was. I mean, the whole boom-shoot era is shamelessly piggybacking on nostalgia for 90s shooters while having both the technology and the blueprint for making a good game. The only other thing a project like that needs to succeed is passion of those in charge (and money, but I assume 3DR can spare some of those), both because it usually is a prerequisite for the creation of an artistic work, and because passion is the thing this whole era sells itself on. Blood 2 is a landmark, a monument (a monolith, you could say even) to the developers' ambition and their failure to bring it to fruition. Phantom Fury, as a product - if it happens to fail - will be nothing but a footnote.
Blood 2 was an unfinished game with much of the original team missing that only barely got patched to a playable state with the expansion pack money that didn't cover even half of what needed to be done to finish it, and yet it's a better game than pretty much any "boomer shooter" revival game I've played, with the sole exception being Ion Fury for bringing back the Build Engine goodness. Ironically Civvie was one of the guys that shat the loudest on Blood 2, but it's honestly an underrated game worth playing if you're into the genre.
The Build Engine curse. Shadow Warrior? Canned and rebooted. Duke Nukem 3D? Duke Nukem Forever. Blood? Blood 2. Ion Fury? Phantom Fury. Hope this ages poorly, but as things are...
mad props to civvie calling out slipgate and hiding gameplay issues behind aesthetic and "vibes". lately it really seems that gamers will buy into any indie game as long as it looks good.
The Slipgate art department is fucking YOKED. Like holy shit their talents carry anything they do. I bought both Aeon of Wrath and Graven because I am 1. a Heretic baby and 2. Loved LOVED the art style of the screenshots. But over the course of the EA for Graven I learned that the people behind the mechanical implementation? Absolutely dire. Absolutely fucking dire. One of the greatest sins of the whole Graven EA adventure was that they were interacting with us in the comments for the game when we were reporting large issues. I for one made a post reporting the fact that enemy spawns on backtracking were fucking broken. They responded with "Thank you so very much for your diligent reporting blah blah blah. Then it comes out and not only are the bugs and issues still largely there in the ONE episode that got play tested. They introduced or replaced entire mechanics that never got to be tested in EA at all! Like what the actual fuck was the point in EA then?!
This. So much this, I enjoyed Graven and Wrath even with their shortcomings. I believe Splitgate can make something special, but alas seems all that is copium. I will still be playing PF just to see how it plays other than that, I'm done with 3DR.
The point was to get more of you're money upfront, early access games that become successful rarely gets more attention or improved upon from the devs, just more paid for content gets released for it or there's a sequel bait announcement..which guess what, Early access baybee
It’s clear some stuff happened behind the scenes as none of the games Slipgate are working on have seen the light of day until recently, with a lot more of them cancelled . This game clearly needed more dev time but considering how fractured its ideas are I’m not sure it would have saved it.
I am so damn sad to hear this stuff about Graven and Wrath -- I bought both a long while back and enjoyed what I played, but expected them to improve a lot more than they seem to have done since then.
Civvie putting aside the facade for a moment to talk to us directly was strangely touching. Thank you for the content man, I'm glad you enjoy making it as we do watching it.
The heartfelt peek behind the curtain was a real moment. Thanks Civvie. You make great content, and many people, myself amongst them, appreciate you. Long live Civvie.
Thank you, Civvie, for being the reason I play retro games, for getting into DOOM, for being overall entertaining, and helping us regular folk forget about our problems IRL with your content~ I did a full playthrough of DUSK on twitch because I learned about it through your channel (unfortunetly I didn't save it all) and many more boomer shooters I would have skipped over. Also, bringing to light how many fucking sewer levels exist. I've even started keeping track of any I run into when I'm gaming (Pro Crash Bandicoot 2, right here) Also, congrats on quitting smoking. I understand addiction (right now, it's food for me) so being able to break that habit is commendable. I look forward to more of your videos, and maybe if I learn how to make games, maybe you'll end up in it or playing it...there will be a sewer, but I promise to make it good enough to remove one from the counter.
Goddamn...your comment was good. I'm not a game designer, but I know that a sewer level should contain a water puzzle, some quirky enemies and a creative setpiece.
Maybe the real Katie was the friends we made along the way Also congratulations on quitting cigarettes! Lastly, I absolutely love the photo of young Civvie (as seen at around 0:31). It's not hysterical or anything, but it sure is a delight every time I see it
I'm so glad you said it, I've been holding it back this whole time. I hope the work of all the wonderful artists that worked on Graven is put to better use someday. It really could've been something special.
A year ago I went on a limb and released my first ever in depth youtube video on the state of Wrath and 3D Realms. Mostly because it frustrated me all these big review channels werent covering the obvious shit show that was occuring. THANK YOU Civvie for finally being one calling them out. 3D is a company banking on nostalgia while slipgate is a studio of boom shoot fan boys that aren't up to snuff. I unfortunately see their downfall on the horizon, one of their own making, which sucks because there really are some talented people there. OH! And the Founder's Box preorder for Wrath is STILL in development 😂 game was delayed for years and they couldnt even get the limited edition preorder made in time!
The brief moment of Civvie being real for a moment feels strange, but nice. I knew it was all a bit but hearing Civvie break character for the first real time hit different
Civvie 11 breaking character was not something that I expected. Keep up the great work. I find most people on UA-cam who "review" (i.e. usually just ranting trying to make it seem like they are objective) games to try to inject their ideology, trying to promote their opinions as fact, give poor insight into the actual game being discussed, and/or genuinely make me question if they played the game that they are talking about. Whether or not it is part of the character that you play for the channel, you do come across as genuine, sincere, honest, and blunt about the games you discuss and certain subjects directly and/or indirectly related to them and seem to (if not unknowingly) be able to naturally indicate whether something you think is a personal take on somethin. In short, your videos are both informative, funny, and entertaining to watch. I am excited to see what games you will be covering in the future.
I feel like Slipgate Ironworks provides much needed perspective on how these boom shoots are perceived. A lot of people can be quick to write them off as 'good' by association simply because of their approach and visual appeal and chalking up any shortcomings in design to 'well that's how they made games in the 90s' with no regard for actual quality which is... incorrect. It was cute back in 2013 when we didn't have shit except ROTT, Wrack and Strafe. They were still figuring stuff out. They don't have that safety blanket anymore.
Man I remember being so excited for Strafe and then it was soooooooo mediocre. I should really give the Millennium edition a try but I just haven't had the will to after the bad taste the launch left me with.
I actually gave Strafe an 8.5 back when it came out because I was so happy to have something remotely retro. It's one of the biggest regrets I have with a review score.
I remember that when Wrath first came out (in early access) there also weren't THAT many boom shooters, much less them being quake-like. If Wrath came out back then, I feel that it would be better received than now.
It's actually pretty wholesome to see you, the primal boomer shooter youtuber/reviewer, point out these flaws in the industry, and yes, it's not only AAA or "AAAA" greed problems we're seeing right now; some of these "indie" companies are marketing themselves as the "top retro fps/boomer/old school extraordinaire connoisseur of everything made in the 90's", but in reality they can't find their own ass in the dark. As you precisely pointed out: it's just for vibes alone, to look good in a trailer. The FPS renaissance was looking cool when there were only 3 or 4 games coming out, but then Doom Eternal happened and now every shooter has a space marine, every enemy is a demon and every level is a hellscape. With double barrelled shotguns. From one side we have this new "3drealms" patting itself on the back for accomplishments made by THE OLD AND ONLY Apogee 3D Realms, getting so bold as to literally list original 3DR games on their bios, this should be illegal; but then on the other side we have developers who actually know what they're doing, releasing games like Arthurian Legends, Forgive Me Father, Perilous Warp and Zortch, which comes out of nowhere and no one gives a damn because they don't have big names like New Blood or 3dreams behind them. Even most of youtubers, except you, deny to cover said games because they "don't move the algorithm". Civvie, I must thank you for all the work you put in here, because of you I even started my own channel 4 years ago, your line of work really inspires me ( and I'm sure it inspires a lot more, way bigger than me). I also started talking about old school FPS, but I grew tired of the genre in about 6 months, since then I talk about old games in general. Needless to say, I admire you even more for not only sticking with your style, but speaking out loud so many truths that need to be said.
I would say it was all foreseeable and the bloat that rushed down later on was the clear sign that the boomer-shooter approach ended up being "Andrew Hulshut typical mad guy goes killing hell and its demons because doom eternal did it "-slop . While some games are awesome and a breath of fresh air , the rest just were cheap and badly made Duke Nukem clones (Except Ion Fury) and really lackluster projects that dont have a point at all to be played . When Daikatana stills looks much more interesting and actually brings fun even in its badly designed moments compared to the boomer-shooter slop nowadays then you know that something incompentently happens again . Even Indies arent safe from scamming.
Calm down buddy it's not that fucking bad. Boomershooter enthusiasts are so hooked on the doom and gloom, it's ridiculous. Even the stinkers like Graven are just mediocre, but you try to act like it's the worst thing and all boomershooters are terrible. Its so tiring to see this shit
At the very least thank god Core Decay is back in Ivar Hill's hands and he's trying to find a new publisher and SiN reloaded is purely under Nightdive now. Envisioning what those games could've been like under slipgate (especially sin after kingpin) makes be shudder in fear. What hurts the most about phantom fury is that the potential is there. it has the potential to be a GREAT game. But it's being made by people that clearly didn't understand why IF's gameplay was so good, and that's the punchy fast combat. At the very least even if the game is bad, maybe it'll be useful to the people making stuff like the DNF01 restoration project to help refine their experience. also it was really refreshing to hear you just be real at 14:28. i love how you'll always make stuff not for the views, but just because it'll be fun or interesting. That's what more creators need to do tbh. on that note I'd love a Deadly Shadows vid/series, your T1/2 vids are so good
That part of civvie talking honestly really got me dor some reason. Love your videos by the way. I find you with the Duke Nukem video and been watching you since.
I wasn't entirely aware that Voidpoint wasn't doing Phantom Fury, so now I'm really skeptical. I thought Aftershock was actually a lot better than the main campaign, so my hope was that Phantom Fury would be even better still. Instead, now I'm bracing for a tremendous letdown.
Thank you Civvie, I really love your work man, your channel is one of the most interesting things to watch on UA-cam. It shows that you put a TON of effort and work your ass off for these videos, i hope you keep being entertained making them for a long time, as much as we enjoy watching them. You're awesome.
good to see the kayfabe drop for the first time in years. the bit's great but I'm really genuinely glad you, the creative, are not as curmudgeony and miserable as Civvie, the character. I thought as much, but it's good to see the backdrop of a prisoner locked in a torture chamber/Guantanamo Bay Space-Prison wasn't some twisted metaphor for a man who feels hopeless and out of control of his life forced to be a circus clown to an audience of unfeeling, aging hypocrites, a cry for help from a desperate syncope for new blood in a dying society filtered through layers of irony as some sick attempt at protection against the harsh, unfeeling space we sit in. Because, y'know, that'd be sad. I'll admit it's parasocial, but I was worried that interpretation was reality, and worried for you, the man behind the Monty Python electric chair. It's calming in a way to know you do genuinely enjoy this weird, awesome job you've ended up with. I also sincerely appreciate you focusing on GOOD new releases and making sure your "Drag the game out to the pillory and give the crowd a basket of tomatoes" games tend to be far less recent. I feel guilty making fun of games like Phantom Fury for the exact reason you pointed out: real, talented people were given no other option but to spend their time polishing a turd. Even if it looked bad, it'd be because great, talented artists were FORCED to do a bad job, which sucks. Old and bad stuff, made by three dudes who didn't really know what they're doing, who have either moved on to doing something else or practiced their craft until they make BETTER shit (Like going from Redneck Rampage to fucking Return to Castle Wolfenstein). It's nobody's baby anymore, it's not gonna hurt anyone's feelings the same way shitting on some 3$ indie single-dev steam game that's weird and annoying will. I really, really respect that about you. I also like that you use your platform to uplift. It's not lost on me, or the audience, that a good quarter to a third of your content nowadays is unheard-of indie titles that you just like a lot. Keep doing what you're doing. Thank you.
Hearing Civvie be genuine is something I never saw coming but genuinely it's awesome to hear. This channel has been awesome to watch for a few years now and always brings a smile to my face, keep doing what you enjoy man
Hearing real Civvie is so nice. The bits are important to the identity of the show, I think, but real civvie sounds like a cool dude. I hope he gets his nutriloaf this week.
Civvie, I absolutely loved the moment where you broke character and let the real you through. It's clear that you're passionate about what you do, and it shows in each and every video--but especially here. If you were to let loose like this more often, I don't think we'd complain, because--again--moments like these come from a place of really caring about the source material that you've spent an entire life consuming and watch get shit on again and again for the sake of nostalgia and vibes. It would break lesser men. You do fantastic work, and you don't need to be *on* all the time for our sakes. Engagement and the Algorithm, however...
Civvie, as a guy that don't really tune into your vids alot, I appreciate you on what you do and thank you for being a YTer and an inspiration of why I like Boomer Shooters. Thank you for being a YTer where you talk about Boomer Shooters that you like and spread positivity about the genre instead of the bad stuff and remind me WHY I love Boomer Shooters. It was very surprising to me that you were putting on a character and Katie wasn't real, but that goes to show how well you act and I have to thank you for making it so entertaining. And about these layoffs, these layoffs in general hurt the gaming industry more than I ever know, and I really hope to see the end of this problem. One day, though. Just gotta let our voices be heard and let em know that this is not ok. Keep doing what you doing, Civvie.
You ever heard of a game called 'Evolva', Civvie? It's a super obscure game from 2000 with unique evolution mechanics that I've never seen in a game before
For some reason a small part of me really believed that Civvie had a VA sidekick who undercut his videos with Daria-esque dry humour for comic effect. Well, that's the last shred of innocence gone, back to the howling gale of nihilistic despair that is reality.
Jesus, Civvie. I really wish you'd been wrong, but you got Phantom Fury HORRIFYINGLY right. Game's a dumpster fire burning hotter than the corpse of the franchise right now.
Great video, Civvie, and I really appreciated the honesty section in the middle. People get too into these personas sometimes, but a breath of fresh air once in a while helps keep things grounded. Also, HUGE congrats on quitting cigarettes! Can't wait to see what you're cooking up in the other roundup video. Maybe some Arthurian Legends or Chop Goblins?
April release after that disastrous demo not even 6 months ago? Yeah, it’s gonna be a mess. Still no sign of the remaster for Sin that was announced years ago either.
Imagine the release is not only complete, but all the bugs have been squashed, all the mechanics work, and the game is just plain fun to play. Boy, that would be a reason for an alien invasion!
Damn CULTIC shout-out lets gooo Also some crazy timing - I literally finished my first hands-on session with an updated Phantom Fury build and saw this video had dropped! The difference between the demo combat and the current build is staggering. I know it might not mean much coming from someone close to 3DR, but the team really listened to players' feedback from the demo and the combat is vastly improved. Combat feels much more dynamic, meaty, and visceral now with improved gibs, hit feedback, enemy reactions, sound improvements, etc. etc. - I haven't gotten to play the full game but I was so relieved personally to see the gigantic strides the team was able to make with the gunplay and combat!
Really hope this is the case. Slipgate's track record their last few releases has been questionable, especially with Graven and Kingpin Reloaded. Here's to Phantom Fury coming out more than half-baked
Great news! Because it definitely looks promising, as long as they address the issues. Love Cultic by the way, looking forward to episode 2, the first one was really fun!
I mean yeah, coming from someone close to 3dr, this sounds like corpo speak for your concerns have been noted (buzz word buzz word buzz word) buy their game.
Aww, Civvie. We love you too! But also holy god damn fuck the demo of Phantom Fury was beyond raw. Let alone your gripes with Graven (which I gave up on after the demo gave me a severe headache because of *something* with the way it looked) At the very least, how you feel about Wrath is how I kinda felt about it playing it during Early Access and dipping my toes into release version. Those goddamn Not Cacodemons didn't need to be so tanky, but at least we got John Outlander's Superman Punch to solve that problem. Wrath is definitely best enjoyed in bursts, even back in Early access, everything felt very overwhelmingly vast lol. But it's good!
I just want to say that you breaking character and giving your viewers a glimpse into who you is heartwarming. I got into classic shooters like original doom, quake, half-life and others because of your videos.
Graven just breaks my heart because you can tell the artists really gave it their all, the mood in the first episode just take it to 11 but as a game Graven so profoundly unfun to play. I would've actually thought better of it if enemies died in 1 hit and you take only minor damage from everything so I could at least go "Oh hey wandering through these interconnected world is fun!" but not even the easy mode does that it just gives you *slightly less* spongy mckill-you enemies.
I enjoyed Graven immensely. I know it has rough edges and that Mystic bug MUST be fixed but to me it has what seems a lot of games don't these days and that is a soul. As you alluded to the atmosphere really nails it. I hope modders can take this thing and improve what is there, starting with the save system as it really sucks. You can see that the devs did care about their and it shows, it just needs a bit more work to get it honed. This game to me never felt like it was made by a corporate board room committee. I really didn't much have a hard time with the monsters and overall thought they were fine. The bosses I always suck at so I just trudge through them time and again until they are dead.
wonder if this will finally attract attention to that ion fury dlc aftershock . was surprised it was like ion fury 2 and it got no marketing at all rofl
That's what happens when you announce an expansion/game like 4 years ago and imply it's gonna come out very soon, then go radio silent. Then you announce a whole-ass sequel years later while still giving no info on your previous unreleased project. Then (correct me if I'm wrong on the order of events) the demo for the sequel gets released and it bombs, and you release your expansion without raising any hype.
I've been watching you Civvie for a long-ass time and I am thankful for your content. Not only I keep my level in English, as it's my second language, but over the years your videos opened my baby-zoomer-gamer eyes to the vast world of old-school games and retro throwback games. If not your videos I'd probably forget about the magic of video games while drowning away in AAA live service bullshit. So thanks man. Thanks for keeping me, us entertained and showing us why videogames are magical.
Seeing Civvie lifting the curtains of the stage for a moment, is why I love content creators like him. Putting on a show for the audience, but also reminding said audience that he isn't lost in the character he created. Not chasing the latest greatest, but many times just doing, what you wanna do. Thanks for all the Pro-Series episodes and reviews so far Civvie. Hope you continue enjoying what you do. Seriously, thanks man.
I was not expecting a peek behind the curtain, behind the character of CV11, and I very much appreciated that honest and tender little moment. I’m glad to hear this is done with love and respect for these games and developers, and that you enjoy shitting on the occasional Chaser! Also happy to hear that you haven’t smoked for so long, that legit made me proud to hear! Love ya, Civvie! 👍
Man, as a person who did not grow up with 3d Realms height, and was excited to see the return of old game design aspects, its sad to see 3D Realms drown again. Hopefully they can comeback from it, wounded but stronger, but if civvie is being pessimistic about their survival, idk if I should have hope.

Dude, spoilers!
If I may ask, what caused you to leave mid-development?

Because at the end of the day, its still a broken product they ask 25 dollars for.
i thankfully got it in a bundle for much less and i still felt ripped off
Yes, it's so important to stress that negativity (while sometimes fun) is unproductive and harmful in general.
Agreed 100%
You know the situation is dire when the funny internet man breaks character, but at the same time, thanks for having the integrity to do so, Civvie.
That someone from Slipgate Ironworks thinks the DNF 2001 trailer was "90% completed" makes sense given what that company considers a finished product.

And don’t get me started on his attitude towards the lack of a save system; “that’s a mechanic that would require a whole different game.”
Absolute douche bag.

So yeah don't go out there thanking anyone brother, you are the one putting honest to god brilliant entertainment out there for free.
Honestly, a fan of your work.
Edit: I promise the sewer level will be short lmao
Well, what do ya know, Civvie was *right.* Phantom Fury turned out to be a janky dumpster fire. SMFH
real life civvie jumpscare was crazy but it made me really happy for some reason, love your videos man keep it up
civvie going mask off and genuinely just talking to us about stuff feels really really good and the impossible rarity of it makes it so much better than if he did it often
also real talk-civvie sounds so much different from character-civvie, and it's actually kinda comfy
Man, that bit with Civvie breaking character was genuinely kind of heartwarming.
Thanks for always making kickass content!
The Ion Fury to Phantom Fury change reminds me of Blood to Blood 2.
That's one more way Phantom Fury captures "the vibes" of the era
Having played Blood 2, yeaaaah that lines up lol.
When the prophercy hits way too hard
mad props to civvie calling out slipgate and hiding gameplay issues behind aesthetic and "vibes". lately it really seems that gamers will buy into any indie game as long as it looks good.
Slipgate has invented a brand new genre of Unreal Engine 5 Asset Flip
I am so damn sad to hear this stuff about Graven and Wrath -- I bought both a long while back and enjoyed what I played, but expected them to improve a lot more than they seem to have done since then.
look up what "known shippable" bugs are
Civvie putting aside the facade for a moment to talk to us directly was strangely touching. Thank you for the content man, I'm glad you enjoy making it as we do watching it.
I did not expect the 4th wall break in this vid
The heartfelt peek behind the curtain was a real moment. Thanks Civvie. You make great content, and many people, myself amongst them, appreciate you. Long live Civvie.
I'm convinced that Graven was a deliberate attempt at re-creating the Witchheaven experience in modern times.
I've even started keeping track of any I run into when I'm gaming (Pro Crash Bandicoot 2, right here)
Also, congrats on quitting smoking.
Also, I'm wanting to make games, but, I'm trash at coding, though I can do dialogue and voice acting well.
Maybe the real Katie was the friends we made along the way
Also congratulations on quitting cigarettes!
I love how you can just barely tell he laughs while saying “Reading Comprehension” when talking about Graven
Great ad for your great channel brother
And yet people will defend these anyway. Because it's "better than Call of Duty" and that's all the more vapid boomshoot fans care about.
I actually gave Strafe an 8.5 back when it came out because I was so happy to have something remotely retro. It's one of the biggest regrets I have with a review score.
@@KingSigy I was acting similar. I was so determined to enjoy it I kind of forced myself to try and enjoy it.
I remember that when Wrath first came out (in early access) there also weren't THAT many boom shooters, much less them being quake-like. If Wrath came out back then, I feel that it would be better received than now.
shoutout to both of your thief series I love them! You made great videos then and that hasn't stopped since. Thanks a bunch
I am so glad that I found Civvie. His videos always make my day.
@@Snyperwolf91 It's Doom clones all over again (literally), which is in a way weird kid of irony, I guess.
Wanting a decent Heretic/Hexen successor is such a painful burden, I swear... might as well make one myself
@@InternetHydrawasn't there supposed to be one that was a Doom 3 mod? Whatever happened to that?
Glad to see that ur aight cuz to ne whenever someone doesn't upload for more than 3 months they're PROBABLY DEAD
Tragically, Kingpin Reloaded will remain stuck in 3D Realms' mitts and the terrible damage Slipgate did to the game can't be reversed at this point
Still hoping Civvie does Deadly Shadows with the Sneaky Upgrade mod. Even better if he actually HIGHLY RECOMMENDS it over the vanilla release.
Glad you broke character to thank the fans and explain some things.
Been watching for years and legit love every time the channel uploads.
I was NOT ready to get hit with Katie lore more than the ending of the Fight Club movie...
14:12 Well, we appreciate what you do, it's very entertaining and works with your presentation.
You ever heard of a game called 'Evolva', Civvie?
It's a super obscure game from 2000 with unique evolution mechanics that I've never seen in a game before
I enjoy when people ask me if I've ever heard of something super obscure.
I have now!
@@Civvie11Novelty detected: charging brain shock.... Bzzzzzt!

Thank you for that massive nostalgia hit. Civvie or Mandy reviewing Evolva would've been wonderful.
Holy crap I thought I was the only one who had!
I still think it deserves a remake. It had the makings of a really cool game.
Ooh, flashbacks to a certain... pcgamer? demodisc with Evolva. Had that Shiny Entertainment vibe (although it was not Shiny).
Hey Civvie, we love you, never forget that. thank you for the years of incredible content and laughs
Oh hey Civvie.
I hope Phantom Fury doesnt suck.
But it probably will.
that new trailer is rough
Boy am I glad you commented here. UA-cam hasn't sent me a notification for your uploads in forever, I thought you died.
I don't want this to be true ;_;
Damn CULTIC shout-out lets gooo
Also some crazy timing - I literally finished my first hands-on session with an updated Phantom Fury build and saw this video had dropped!
Hearing that coming from you gives me hope.
Great news! Because it definitely looks promising, as long as they address the issues. Love Cultic by the way, looking forward to episode 2, the first one was really fun!
You're awesome!
Let alone your gripes with Graven (which I gave up on after the demo gave me a severe headache because of *something* with the way it looked)
At the very least, how you feel about Wrath is how I kinda felt about it playing it during Early Access and dipping my toes into release version. Those goddamn Not Cacodemons didn't need to be so tanky, but at least we got John Outlander's Superman Punch to solve that problem. Wrath is definitely best enjoyed in bursts, even back in Early access, everything felt very overwhelmingly vast lol. But it's good!
It got worse.
It got way worse.
Like to realize that Katie was never real
I don't know if it's wrong to hope for a fan patch that salvages some enjoyment out of the experience, but I hate to see all that going to waste.
@@kivie13Agreed.
Graven looks beautiful, but I'm very much not the type who will stomach bad-to-mid gameplay for the sake of good visuals.
wonder if this will finally attract attention to that ion fury dlc aftershock . was surprised it was like ion fury 2 and it got no marketing at all rofl
@@tobiyoarcangel i believe ion fury and phantom fury are from different developers
I adore straightforward and genuine Civvie. Bring this guy on more often.
fourth wall breaks only keep their impact if they're rare.
Seriously, thanks man.
man that segment at 14:28 was so nice to watch :]
I'm glad you have fun making these. Thank you for your work Civvie
Since Civvie and Katie are one and the same, I sleep easily knowing she gets paid equally.
as in nothing at all
I don't think nutriloafs count as payment.
Civvie makes the kind of videos I like before I've started watching.
14:30
This heart to heart was just great to hear. I love your videos Civvie and I'm glad you're having fun making them
I was not expecting a peek behind the curtain, behind the character of CV11, and I very much appreciated that honest and tender little moment.

Hopefully they can comeback from it, wounded but stronger, but if civvie is being pessimistic about their survival, idk if I should have hope.
yeah if Civvie went on a proper rant, putting all his usual antics aside, it is serious.
I felt sorry for Splitgate, they have some talents in there but the management fuck them all up.
The best part of this video was hearing you've been off the smokes that long. Three years. Great damned job Civvie.
Man you're the best, that character break was wholesome af
