The thing that always struck me about this (like the first Dark Forces) is the way it merged a lot of genres. Nominally Outlaws is a FPS. It plays like an FPS. But there's this rich vein of Lucasarts' point-and-click adventures running through it, too.
This game has a striking resemblance to Call of Juarez: Gunslinger if you ever get to play that one. It's absolutely fantastic and has a similar reloading system to this
@@scarlet_phonavis6734 the whole thing with old guns is the fact that you can (usually) reload them only by one bullet at a time. Smh, just use a clip/magazine, lol
It also reminds me a lot of Fistful of Frags, a Source arena shooter that uses almost the exactly same reloading system as one of the core mechanics of its combat.
The Ballad of Dr. Death is catchy as hell and is full of interesting motifs. I couldn't help but yip along every time I heard that palm muted riff in the video. Even if the level it's attached to was a dark maze filled with pain and misdirection.
I played Outlaws back when I was like, 5 on my dad's old computer. I regularly mention that Outlaws is a game that exists, and would deserve a remaster. "WHERE ARE YA, MARSHALL?" is going to be a line that sticks in my mind forever.
The art style and 2D/3D blending reminds me of Full Throttle, and Doctor Death really makes me think of a younger Eustace Baggs. Thanks for showing off this game Civvie, I never knew it existed before, and never knew about that Max cameo either, gotta pick this one up now.
I'm super glad i'm not the only one that thought Doctor Death looked and was animated like Eustace Baggs. Fuck man it just has mouth movement and face look down.
I *STILL* have my CD of the game, and I remember loving the fact that they let you listen to the soundtrack with the game disc in music CD players. That game was in my music disc book (REMEMBER THOSE KIDS?) for so long. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, Civvie.
i didn't think of it until i saw my old PC Tower a few days ago; but the old DISC drive had a play/skip button on it and remember being able to skip songs on the fly when i'd play games like Warcraft 2 and the like. miss those times too.
God damn those cut scenes are great. The character designs, the animation, voice acting, music, it's all just so damn good. Something about the scene where Dr. Death loses his pistol just hits good.
I want to go frame by frame with every cutscene. It's so busy but smooth. Go to 18:12 and look at the motion of the scruff of hair he has on top going with the motion of him looking around just before Civvie switches back to the gameplay at 18:15. You get that kind of animation if you got people who know what they're doing with a pen and they love it.

It's probably the first thing my dad let me play by myself, and i'll never forget the feeling. Thanks for bringing back the memories Civvie. On gog we go!
The character design has such a strong Full Throttle energy that I can't help but love!! Never really paid much attention to this game before, gotta change that now... pardner!
"Where are you marshal?" Most under-rated voice acting line in history. But yeah classic game this, tis a shame it never got a sequel. Playing on ugly really made it feel like you were in a spaghetti western well and was good training on hit scanners
I wouldn't mind Nightdive getting their hands on this one. Looks like excellent fun and the next generation deserves to remember the lesser but just as lovely shooters or yesteryear.
*"You never killed an innocent man Marshall"* *"I never met an innocent man"* What a badass line 😂 RIP Stephen Ash. Ironic when Doctor Death only have one thing left to do... Die Guess the takeaway from this story is always kill the children...? I wish games are like this, creative because of limitations. A lot of love poured into this game
@@AnimatedTerror You are either creative or not, limitations are just hindrance, limitations don't make you more productive if anything would stop you from achieving your true potential. to prove that just look at some of the greatest sequels in gaming history, like Half-Life 2.
@@AnimatedTerror there are some games that have been good despite their limitations, my favourite for this is Silent Hill 2 which had a short draw distance but disguised it with a fog that was perfectly in keeping with and enhanced the creepy ass nature of stuff. The thing is those limitations don't make the game great, what made it great was how they overcame them without compromising their artistic vision which is the main difference these days where you have studious forced to release basically unfinished products because the producer figures they can patch it later or they just don't care. Aliens Colonial Marines had plenty of limitations but that sucked because ultimately no one really cared.
Not gonna lie - that is some of the most stylistic, creative, and cleanly animated game cinematics I have seen - considering the time period and the risks they took with it.
I don't remember the air currents I knew the fly cheat from the beginning which makes levels like Bloody Mary's Marshall Training level super fun, but since I knew the cheat I just flew around in the canyon level.
Steam sells old games and just doesn't bother patching them to run on modern hardware. It's ridiculous. GoG is where it's at for the olden days of gaming.
@@walnzell9328 Well it's the fault of windows in many cases, I remember having no problems playing Dark Forces on linux but when I tried it on win10...
Having to contend with the limitations of such old guns is usually interesting in a game that actually thoughtfully incorporates it. I love Hunt:Showdown for it
@@harrybirchall3308 I never thought of it that way. i do appreciate you going to that much detail. I do love red dead, but the combat does feel pretty flat.
I'm not so sure about that. Having your aim and reloading get hampered whenever you get hit sounds "Tripping from Brawl" bad. I'd ditch that in exchange for a more traditional reloading system.
I really like the dialogue in the cut scenes. it's back and forth and slightly quippy especially with the doctor, but not to the point of being insufferable and terrified of coming off as genuine.
Huh, in all of my years of watching UA-cam, I don't think I've ever seen "No Views" on a video from clicking on a video so quickly. Love your content as always Civvie 11.
Played the demo for years before I could convince my parents to buy it for me. Absolutely loved this game. The looks, the sounds, the smooth gameplay, it brings so much nostalgia. Back when Lucas Arts was just pumping out great games left and right.
But....wasn't the Dark Forces source port super inaccurate? I don't mean to shit talk the developers, that's just what I've heard. Then again, maybe Outlaws' SP will turn out better. I don't know, I'm just talking out my ass now.
20:17. The marshal missions came with the original game. It was a great addition if you wanted to play a little less linear. When they released the addon they grouped the marshal missions under the "histrorical missions" label. Edit: Also, the game is 2.5D just like Doom and Duke 3D. The geometry is a bit more complex though. To make roofs, pltaforms and room on top of rooms, they intersected sector height - To make a platform in the editor, you drew a rectangle, then made the roof height lower than the floor height. The engine then only draws the intersected sections. I hope this makes sense, don't really know how else to explain it.
The expression work on the character's faces, especially Anderson, are insane. I don't usually feel much when I watch animated character facial expressions, but damn his makes my dead heart twitch just a bit.
There's something so satisfying about loading each individual round into old timey guns in video games. Each bullet feels meaningful. As a kid I hated the westerns my dad was always watching but games like Red Dead and Hunt: Showdown really turned that around. It's really cool to see that this gameplay mechanic has existed longer than I was aware. It's a shame I missed this when I was younger.
God, this game was my childhood. I still remember playing it on my '95 for the first time all those years ago. God, its been too long. I need to play it again one day!
No friggin' way! Just yesterday I was like "Man, Civvie should review Outlaws..." and here it is! I loved, loved, loooooved this game! First FPS I played, on my uncle's PC...the Morricone's inspired OST, the sound design, the cutscenes...great game, underrated and something which made me fall in love with Italian spaghetti western (despite the story not being like that of a spaghetti western, tbh). P.s.: taking note on the music selection playing in the background, Civvie too loved "the Ballad of Dr. Death": it is an ecleptic and amazing piece of music, and I suggest all of you folks give it a listen; it moves from baroque and Renaissance music to a slapping banjo tune, then adds a choir and ends up in a slower tempo. It is fitting of the character and the level, which shows a descent into a dark mine, with molten lava too at one point.
I do believe is due to his admiration for those games and their interactivity, and maybe because it gives a bit of a "build vibe" to him. In a sense, he's explicitly voicing his implicit 'bias' (not in a bad way) when it comes to old 2.5 dimensions FPSs, which, to me, it's a show of his honesty. This is how I see it, but I could be wrong.
This game has what I consider the best smoke effects of any DOS-era title. Especially the muzzle-flashes in the weapons. They are of extremely high resolution (for the time).
Interestingly, weapon sprites from this game were used for Pirate Doom total conversion, which was inspired by Monkey Island, another Lucas Arts game. It's also very fun and I recommend it to everyone.
"Oh everyone's always on about the _children._ I've _tried_ leaving them alive, but nine times out of ten, they either grow up under my rule or dedicate the rest of their pathetic lives to revenge. ...Usually both. Honestly, killing them is a kindness! I could retract that question -- but _then_ who's the real monster?" "...You are. Still." "I- No, that was a rhetorical question." "And I gave you a rhetorical answer." *Audible silence*
Man this game was my entire childhood, it's what led me down the path of loving old timey westerns.. I'd like to thank my grandpa for having gotten this game for my 4th birthday
I love how aside from the VAs listed, you can hear at least 3 VAs from the classic TMNT cartoon from the 80s/90s doing work in this. Cam Clarke, my beloved.
A great western FPS, and the best western game before Red Dead Redemption. Shame not more was ever done with it, and Disney of all companies has ownership over it. Maybe they'll get Night Dive to remaster it since that's in vogue these days.
I highly doubt that Disney even knows this game exists. Besides, I’d rather not have the company that managed to kill Star Wars be in charge of, well, anything, really.
Love this game. Absolutely massive open levels that still leave you scratching your head as to where to go next. The reloading system is dope and the alien easter-egg scared the shit out of me. That whole shoot out on top of the train and the ability to use scopes was also mind-blowing. Didn't know it had music, though. Still have the CD lying around somewhere.
Holy fucking shit I LOVE the animations in this game. It's a damn shame there aren't more and that you don't see stuff like this as often anymore. The folks over at Lucasarts were damn talented artists and animators as well as game crafters. First time commenting on one of your videos and I gotta say I love your stuff, Civvie. I love everything about your videos from the random dungeon bits to your humor and especially learning about some games like this I've never heard of before. Keep up the fantastic work and I hope you have a great day!
You'd think having to mash R to reload every single bullet/shell would be absolutely awful, but it surprisingly feels really good. Only other game I can recall that does it is "The Citadel". It's rough, janky, and has questionable level design, but goes all in with the gun mechanics while keeping the speed high. It's just so satisfying to play.
Can you confirm for me if hitting r once reloads two bullets in the revolver? People are saying it's 1 per tap. And I'm having issues with the shooting controls not being reliable. It makes me think it's polling too fast, causing it to take my one input as two or more .
What annoys me about modern mil shooters - among other things - is that you always play the biggest, saltiest, grittiest, meanest, most battle-hardenedest of Special Operations Operational Operators, yet you still reload like a 17-year-old in boot camp picking up a rifle for the first time. Yeah, sure. Fifteen seconds to drop a mag and plug in a new one.
A year later and I still can't believe this episode happened. It's surreal. I really appreciate this channel. This episode kinda hits right in the chest.
Jesus, looking at the shots firing at 2:03 you can just feel the quality and effort in this game. The smoke, animation, and subtle screen shake provide such an amazing feel just watching it.
I still love this game, the atmosphere and creativity, and music are unmatched. Unloading a roaring 6-shooter into a group of enemies, glass breaking and bullets hitting sounds amazing to this day. The sound of the single barreled shotgun was my fav. The weapons FELT powerfull too, that's rare.
I'm really glad you did an episode on this one. One of my favorite UA-cam moments. Played this in 1997, and the aliens in the sewers under the outhouse on the first level scared the crap out of me back then hahah
Okay but can we talk about that flourish the Marshall does after hoping onto the train, which as a whole was just a bunch of really well done animation? If I'd seen that as a kid I'd have been ecstatic.

Don't need to reach across the gun or move my shooting hand. I was trained to keep the gun aimed when reloading if possible so having the loading gate on the right when shooting lefty makes more sense to me
The bygone era of immersion.
@@inkmime I noticed the revolver was single action, not a swing out, so it has the same quality as the rifle in terms of the position of the loading gate being optimal for a left handed shooter with more modern habits

Absolutely adored this game as a kid. Those early LucasArts games were really special Grim Fandango, Dark Forces and Jedi Knight. Great memories
Fun Fact: Spittin Jack Sanchez, the second boss of the town level appears in different spots on the level according to the difficulty. On "Good" difficulty he always shows up at the storehouse near the hotel to the west after killing 90% of the outlaws in the level. On "Bad" difficulty he will randomly appear on the map after killing half of the outlaws and lastly on "Ugly" difficulty he always spawns near the player. last time i played, he showed after i cleared out the saloon and was heading to the pharmacy when he showed up and one-shot me. scared the piss out of me!

@LabRat Knatz Aw man, ol' Jack is really getting sentimental these days, adding the ... right before he hits enter!

It's absolutely fantastic and has a similar reloading system to this
One could argue that game is directly inspired by this one
Funny how I was thinking about that game constantly during the entire review
@@scarlet_phonavis6734 the whole thing with old guns is the fact that you can (usually) reload them only by one bullet at a time. Smh, just use a clip/magazine, lol
God I love that game. Such a unique game

I still fondly remember booting this thing up in 97, and even my 12-year-old ass was blown away by those cutscenes. Style for days.

Yeah a lot of care went into making this game.

I wish games are like this, creative because of limitations. A lot of love poured into this game
Limitations doesn't bring out creativity, but creativity helps overcome limitations.
@@pyramidhead7780s nah, I’d say it’s more like “limitations brings out creativity and it’s creativity that overcomes limitations.”
I've still got my copy. There's a very good reason I've been collecting physical media for over two decades. The soundtrack is absolutely fabulous!
Not gonna lie - that is some of the most stylistic, creative, and cleanly animated game cinematics I have seen - considering the time period and the risks they took with it.
“This air current nonsense.” That was a solid chuckle for an hour.
I don't remember the air currents I knew the fly cheat from the beginning which makes levels like Bloody Mary's Marshall Training level super fun, but since I knew the cheat I just flew around in the canyon level.
This is one of those underrated games that I'm really glad GoG has made available again. It's not perfect, but it is still really worth playing.
GOG does put out games that are old and make it available for modern PC’s
Steam sells old games and just doesn't bother patching them to run on modern hardware.

Thankful my father brought me Outlaws, Doom, Witchaven, Dark Forces and many other gems of the decade! You were the best, dad!

I really like the dialogue in the cut scenes. it's back and forth and slightly quippy especially with the doctor, but not to the point of being insufferable and terrified of coming off as genuine.

Why does Civvie keep comparing the game to build engine games though? I'm confused when this game has a totally different engine and is much older...
This brought back a lot of good memories, thanks Civvie
Omfg the Brisco County Jr. footage at 00:10 I already love the vid Civvie
This game has what I consider the best smoke effects of any DOS-era title. Especially the muzzle-flashes in the weapons. They are of extremely high resolution (for the time).
Never heard of this game but Civvie is always classic
Interestingly, weapon sprites from this game were used for Pirate Doom total conversion, which was inspired by Monkey Island, another Lucas Arts game. It's also very fun and I recommend it to everyone.
Civvie I am shocked that you only mentioned the soundtrack in one sentence. This is one of the greatest soundtracks in all of gaming.
This is a childhood core memory of mine, you making a video on this game has made me so incredibly happy.

A great western FPS, and the best western game before Red Dead Redemption. Shame not more was ever done with it, and Disney of all companies has ownership over it. Maybe they'll get Night Dive to remaster it since that's in vogue these days.
