I've completed all 4 parts! Thank you so much for these videos. They are super helpful. I'm a beginner in learning ASL and I can't wait to learn more :)
Thank you so much for these videos!! I was a total beginner to ASL but wanted to start learning when someone came up to me at my retail job and I couldn't communicate with them because I didn't know a single word in ASL. My friends and I learned from these videos together, and we feel much more equipped to communicate in ASL now! Thanks Chris :)
I work as a yoga instructor at my local gym, and we just got a new trainee. She just came from America and she's deaf. So, I figured I'd learn ASL so we could communicate because I can't read very well. Also, thanks for the lessons- kudos to you!
H Chris, out of my boredom and looking for something that might useful to me as an extra knowledge, i came across your this ASL which is very interesting and helpful. i completed all the 4 parts and would like to convey my gratitude to you, i am now able to understand a little bit how to use this sign language as a beginner. Thank you very much, really really appreciated. (winson lim : Singapore)🙂😊
I just found this video after struggling to communicate with a deaf neighbor in a minor water line emergency. I couldn't remember anything other than "yes", "thank you", and "deaf" and we didn't have our cell phones on us. Your explanations are great! Thank you for making these videos
This week's challenge is to use what you have learned and have a conversation with someone that is deaf. Is this something you have already done? What was your experience like?
@@ChrisGorges usually when I go to bed I watch Netflix or Disney + now I go to bed watching your asl videos. The people who clean our shop are all deaf and I can't wait to sign a little bit with them.
Thanks for these 25 most common signs, it was fun and made me happy I remember many of them, it was fun. Also the directional signs were great and reminded me of the kids at New York School for the deaf. I like the idea of Language Parent, this should make all comfortable. I am with the beginers. Thanks so much for all you do. I look forward to the next set of signs.
Thank you so much for your videos. I spent 4 days learning the 100 signs. I have social anxiety so actually speaking to people is hard, so I can't imagine if I had to sign to someone, but at least I know a few things just in case.
Thanks, I'm glad you found this series helpful. Having social anxiety must be very challenging and I hope it is something that gets better with time for you. Let me know what kind of signs you would like to learn next or of you'd like a video about overcoming anxieties
@@ChrisGorges Oh if you had a way to overcome anxiety that I haven't tried, I'd be very surprised. :D 2 years of therapy and a dozen medications didn't do it, nor did the "just ignore it" or "just go out there and socialize" methods. But even without the anxiety, I now have MS so that cuts down my socializing even more and leaves me with more time to learn ASL. :) I'll have to catch up on your other videos and let you know. I only just finished the 100 so plenty more on your channel to dive into! Thanks!
@@OckGal Sorry to hear about all of that. However, never give up hope. I've known a few people that have struggled with anxiety or depression for years and years, and eventually they find that one thing that helps make life a bit easier. I actually have a student right now that suffers from severe social anxiety and trauma and is mute, however over the past few months she has been starting to put herself out there and start communicating with others. Just one small step at a time. Take the time to celebrate the small victories along the way. Anyways, hope you enjoy the videos :)

I learned some sign language as a kid but my new neighbor is deaf and I want to communicate with her. Yes, please share some more videos on emotions. I have watched many other instructors on UA-cam but I seem to learn the best from you.
That is great that you are learning sign language to communicate with your deaf neighbor! I'm glad that my videos are helping you learn too. Here is a video where I covered some emotion signs ua-cam.com/video/L-EuYYqMsuU/v-deo.html

Hi! I love your videos! They are very easy to understand and you are my go-to channel when it comes to learning ASL. Maybe you can do a video series talking about hobbies, like words that talk about art (painting, dancing, drama, etc), words that talk about sports, and words that talk about other hobbies too. You don’t have to do this, it’s just a suggestion haha
Thanks. If youd like, you are welcome to join our weekly group practice sessions held on Wednesday evenings via Zoom aslbasics.com/asl-group-practice-sessions/
Good to know that when I learned sign language in private school we were all taught wrong. However the deaf ppl I've come across have all seemed to understand.. The way I learned know is to make k on head and pull away, I also learned feel as middle finger back starting at top of the chest and bring it right above belly button. I've never seen this way before interesting how different it can be
Ok thanks, I had found some, but I have a couple homeschooled kids who'd like to learn more. (Some of those books are hard for me to spell, imagine a kid in kindergarten!)
Hi there Chris Gorges for instance yes or no questions, making a negative statement or correcting the information. Using no, not, none. Thanks for your quick response! I'm currently a college student learning asl.
@@lucyintheskywithdiamonds779 Good, hope the class is going well. I'll try incorporating those into a future video. In the meantime, I did cover much of what you said in previous lessons in the series, such as how to ask questions, common responses, and stuff like that. Keep up the good work 🙂
Hi Chris, I love the way you teach. My biggest problem is that English is not my first Language (it's Spanish) so I always have trobble undurstanding the signs from the other person unless that person would sign to me SUPER MEGA SLOW, witch is not real live.
Hey there! I’m learning asl cause I’m loving it but I have a question how do you say “can’t” cause u say can but I’d love to know how to make a negation thanks!
I am struggling with sign language things keep popping up i got schoolwork to do and its just overwhelming so i am trying to take time off of my schoolwork and focus on sign for 30 min or more. their are not much people that know sign where i live so its hard but i hope everyone has a fantastic day and have fun learning.
Great questions. You would use the sign for help-me moving towards yourself with eye-brows lifted ... it could be signed a few different ways depending on your local community and the specific person you signing to ... but a few ways could be "you help-me can?" ... "help-me you can?" ... "can you help-me?" etc
so if i wanted to say I want to go get lunch would I sign the I, then want, then go, then lunch? or do i need to include get? if so how do you sign that?
Chris thank you for the 100 signs classes. I cannot find the link to download your book “6 steps to sign language fluency could you please send me the link? Thank you so much!
have a question about the yes sign. I thought yes sign was the a sign up and down like head nodding. Looks like your doing the s sign ?? which one is correct?
What about establishing a website where people learning sign language could practice sign language with another live person who is also learning sign language? Does this already exist?
Yep, we've been providing weekly ASL group practice sessions on Zoom since the beginning of the pandemic and still have them available for anyone to join every Wednesday at 5PM Pacific aslbasics.com/asl-group-practice-sessions/
Hey Chris, I didn't fully understand the difference between the two "do". Is it one for questions and the other one for other sentences...? Any other example to understand that better?
In most cases, if the word "do" is used in the middle of a sentence (typically referring to an action of some sort) then use the sign for action. If it is a question, then use the other form of do (sometimes referred to as do-do)
I'd like to know how to explain to a deaf person that I am learning ASL without seeming like a faker. I know I would never be able to carry on a conversation unless they signed slowly. I'm a quick learner but I want to tell them that I'm being sincere without being awkward. Any tips?
Just be authentic and honest. Communicating with someone in an unfamiliar language is always going to be awkward at first and that's okay. One thing that can backfire is giving off the impression that we are more fluent than we currently are and we may end up being even more embarrassed in the end. Just go ahead and do your best and make sure you focus on achieving the clearest communication possible with he current skills you have... with time and experience you'll continue to improve and get better and better.
Thank you for this! I have a question, I’m learning ASL because I’m autistic and need to be able to communicate better on the days where I’m nonverbal. How would i be able to sign that i am able to hear, but not able to talk?
You could sign "I hearing, but talk can't." You can do a quick google search for each of those words in ASL and then string them together to make your sentence. I hope that helps!
The sign shown in the video is to identify yourself as a hearing person (noun) and a different sign would typically be used to describe you hearing something (verb)
I would like to learn manners, I know more, please , thank you but what about you're welcome excuse me & so on. If yiu have a link please share. I have just found you & my daycare kids & I are trying to learn ASL
That's great, here are some online ASL dictionaries that you might find really helpful where you can type in a word and it'll show you a sign. Keep in mind, often times there is more than one way to sign a word, but it can be a good way to get started learning the words you need aslbasics.com/free-asl-resources/ Feel free to check out some of my previous videos as well where I go through various topics such as colors, basic phrases, animals, and things like that
Can the sign for "do" (the question one) be used for questions such as "Do you like this?" or "Do you know what this means?" Also, for the "not" sign, is that applicable to other sentences? Like "This is not mine"? Also, your videos are very helpful! I especially like the narration along with showing the signs. It gives me a better understanding of what you're doing, so that I know I'm not seeing/doing the sign wrong.
Those are great questions! For the sentences you mentioned, the sign "do" would typically not be used. For example, "do you like this" would normally be signed "you like?" or "do you know what this means" would normally be signed "mean what? you know?" or something similar. For the word "not" as in "this is not mine", some would use the sign for "not" but others may sign something like "that mine? head-shake-no" I'm glad that you are finding the videos helpful, if you ever want to set up a brief meeting with me, you can use this link to set up a time calendly.com/aslbasics/consultation

That's great, here are some online ASL dictionaries that you might find really helpful where you can type in a word and it'll show you a sign. Keep in mind, often times there is more than one way to sign a word, but it can be a good way to get started learning the words you need aslbasics.com/free-asl-resources/ Feel free to check out some of my previous videos as well where I go through various topics such as colors, basic phrases, animals, and things like that
Ty for the "TRY""sign,,I really needed 👍💝

I'm here again . I forgot this part. I think its a little bit difficult for me.
For the word "not" as in "this is not mine", some would use the sign for "not" but others may sign something like "that mine? head-shake-no"
I'm glad that you are finding the videos helpful, if you ever want to set up a brief meeting with me, you can use this link to set up a time calendly.com/aslbasics/consultation
