I agree, very few people have true passion for Sign Language & the Deaf. I learned my SL from my Deaf class mate & I discovered that the Deaf are the best teachers because you tend to sign without a chance to speak😄. So I became really good that other Deaf people thought I was also Deaf...I really love SL🙏🏼💖.

I'm now 16 and I am doing just as well as I was maybe even better, since my hearing has deteriorated over the years this channel and many zoom classes later I have learned an extreme amount on communication skills within the signing, vibrations, and lip reading. I'm French, I lived in Japan for 12 years and now I'm 6 years living in Brazil. I've studied the Japanese and Brazilian sign languages and now I'm learning the ASL. Honestly IMO, ASL should be as popular as English itself (being kinda universal). It's the funniest sign language I've studied so far, at least up till now while I'm practicing. Idk quite how to explain. Thank you so much for the videos!

Same, i have watched 4 videos worth 2 and a half hours and already picked up the alphabet and a decent amount of phases..... These videos are amazing!. So glad now too that schools are starting to implement ASL as an optional course for students; i have always believed that sign should be taught regardless of deaf students present or not.

That is great that you are taking that kind of initiative for you're friend. There really is no down side to learning sign language, it only helps you connect with even more people and can even lead into a career you'll fall in love with. Keep it up!

Lol, yeah, although there are masks that you can make or buy with a clear piece so you can see the other persons mouth, many interpreters use these types of masks for better communication

Lost my voice form chronic laryngitis 1 yr 4 months ago, decided it was time to learn sign language. sadly most ppl dont know it, so i might end up still using my phone app tat speaks what i type, perhaps i can convince my family do learn it. at any rate these videos are just what i needed.

It’s crazy how he is till replying to comments from like 10months ago, im here and it says “a year ago” but despite how long it was, this helped me very much, I am learning ASL and this helped me get a better understanding of ASL🖤

My parents have a friend who know ASL. She’s completely hearing but she has deaf friends. But I was really caught up in the beauty of it and wanted to learn. She’s coming to visit and I’m excited to show her what I’ve learned! My dad also knows some sign language. But very minimal, his friend is fluent he just knows most starter signs and other things like dance/dancing or cat/kitten. Or dance you make a person with one hand and have a flat palm up with the other and you wiggle the person back and forth like they’re on a dance floor for dance. For kitten you make an f or in other words you touch you pointer finger and your thumb together and let your other fingers stand up. And then you touch your cheek with your thumb and finger together and basically draw a whisker like a cat.

so this is pretty cool to learn. i went completely deaf when i was 12 (8 years ago) im a lip reader so ive been trying to learn sign lately. very helpful

I like that you teach the variations as well. A lot of people who sign on a regular basis don't use formal sign language. They have their own idiosyncrasies and add personal touches to the way they communicate. So when you learn sign language, it's always good to know all the other ways in which you might see it for recognition purposes.

I haven't met any deaf people before in real life. I got to know some online in a VR game called VRChat and there were some people trying to teach me some of the basics so I already have knew some words like good or bad. Besides the whole words are pretty much the same but due to the limited finger-movement the spell different. Its really beautyful to see how a community manages to cummunicate through different languages and disabilitys. I hope that I'll be able to have some actual conversations in asl when I learned some more.

I'm hard of hearing and have signed for a good many years. No one in my family signs (I wear hearing aids so I do interact by speaking with my wife and children) and sometimes I wish they did, but since I can hear ok, it isn't on "their radar". You're a terrific instructor and I can see where someone would learn easily from you.
On a side note, it has happened in past years where those of us who are not totally deaf nor do we hear 100% can find ourselves on the outside socially. Rarely, but some deaf don't readily accept us and hearing folks ( a few, not all) think either we must be shouted at or have minimal interactions with. I get it, some hearing people are trying to be kind they just don't know what to do.
Thank you for the kind words. I'm sure it must be very frustrating being stuck between cultures. My wife and I have had a few friends that were in the in-between zone and they found it very frustrating too and feeling like they didn't fully belong to either one. I hope that your family become more understanding and will put forth more of an effort to communicate with you using sign language. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
I now work with our small town school district. When the school year ended, I still needed and wanted to work. The only open positions were as an Instructional assistant in Special Education classes. I was assigned a class of mostly 6-9 year olds. I fell IN LOVE with those kids! Most are on the Autism spectrum and are non verbal. We have been learning how to communicate through signs, eye contact and facial expressions. This now gets to be my regular position! I am SOOOO EXCITED! I can't wait for school to start up again next month and I am using these few weeks off (summer break) to study up. Thank you for providing a way for me to learn how to communicate with those very special children I will now be spending my days with. Actually, "thank you" isn't adequate. You are a blessing.
What inspired you to learn sign language? I am just curious if you had a need (to communicate with a parent or friend), or if there was another reason. I taught myself the ASL alphabet when I was about 9 or 10 from the dictionary, now I'm 54. I can't wait to learn more from your videos! Thank you : )

I would like to Thank you, our grandson was born legally deaf, 16 years later his hearing aids aren't working for him any longer, this hurdle was crossed 16 years ago, with your help, we all are learning, including him.
A colleague at my wrk always sat and talked face time in the lunch room.
I went up to her and started writing on paper to talk, then texted .,,,,till I came across the ASL lessons by Chris. She is so happy and since then she and me have a Bond!!!

Even if it turns out to be only mild, there's no downside to learning ASL! And if his hearing impairment is severe enough to cause speech delays, the fact that you started learning ASL right away will be very beneficial to him.
I love this channel so much! I wanted to learn French, sign language, and Japanese and I didn’t think I could do it but this has been encouraging me. I’m so happy I was able to learn these all in one day and memorize them.

this is why I'm doing it too! normally when I have deaf customers we get through just fine with pen and paper, but I also feel morally responsible for taking it upon myself to learn the basics at least! it would be nice to have a friendly, small conversation without a communication barrier, and I know it would make things a lot more easier for deaf/hard of hearing customers :)
@@lizjohnson3702 I agree!!! I felt it was my responsibility to learn at least some basic sign to interact with her! I finally got to try it out last week. All I could remember on the spot was "I am learning sign." but she was so happy and replied back, "Good!" :) I was so tickled. I can't wait to learn more and to pass it on to my daughters
I've been watching videos about the deaf community and finally got the energy to learn some asl because it's so cool. It really is so much different than other languages, and so much EASIER than I expected, it's not like learning a full language it's literally "signs" for things or actions rather than full sentences which I didnt realize
I work at a bakery and we have a couple regulars that are deaf. Including an old co-worker. The smile on there face when I sign the littlest words make me wanna become fluent!

I’ve partially lost my hearing from having neuroblastoma and osteosarcoma due to the chemo. It is very hard for me to hear others and read lips. Thank you for this because I’m sure it will help me communicate more clearly in the future :)

Thank you! I work retail and have run into a couple different customers who are deaf who no longer get the option to read lips. I know very small amounts of sign, but have realized i now desperately want to learn more.

I have a friend who was deaf, before we used to talk using her phone. It's been years since I last saw her and I am planning on finding her again, I'll religiously learn sign language just for her. I don't know how she'll react when I do the sign language to her all of a sudden, and we were still like kids when we met but she was older. I miss her dearly and I hope she is doing okay, thank you for this! Also the name is STEVE I am glad my P.E teacher taught us the letters from A to Z in sign language.
Thank you for this video. I'm in my first ASL class and very excited. My only suggestion is to repeat the gestures (3 times) instead of once as you seem to rush through them. I realize I can rewatch but I find things stick in my brain a bit more when I repeat 3 times. Thanks again!

I realize this video is old, but if I could make a suggestion….go a little slower when you’re signing more than one word. Some of the words are a little difficult to see how they are formed going from one word to the next. Thanks, and look forward to watching and learning more from you.
This is fantastic! I've been wanting to learn ASL for years but the format was always too clinical, or it just didn't connect with me. I love the notes you add with learning and the variations. It's like learning from one of those "cool teachers" in school! Can't wait to come out of the C19 lock down with lots of ASL knowledge :)

A good way to remember "sorry" is to take the 'a' from "apologize" and rub it into your heart. So if you're sorry, you mean it from your heart.

My doctor just told me I am going to go deaf in about a year. I'm only 12 so this is very helpful for me. Other videos just end up teaching very few phrases and I don't end up remembering anything. I love your teaching style, and tips. Keep up the great work! :)

I decided to learn because there’s a boy in my class who feels very isolated and alone, as none of us know how to sign, and sometimes when students talk to him, they speak to his interpreter and not him. In the upcoming March break I’m hoping to learn a bit of the basics so that I can hopefully help him feel more connected:)

Hello finding video helpful but it's hard to see your hand signs w/the subtitles 🤷♀️ so am not sure if am doing it correctly because I cant fully see the hand movement 🤦♀️

this video is so helpful! I've been wanting to learn sign language for a while now, and since we've been in a pandemic for months, I thought that there's really no better time. I started trying to learn sign yesterday, and so far so good! even though I don't have a real need to know sign language right now, you never know if you'll need it in the future. And one of my friend's mom is an asl interpreter ( I think, its something to do with asl) and he speaks fluent asl (not speak, I don't really know how to word it) and since kindergarten, I've wanted to know sign language. Now I'm in 5th grade and finally starting to try learning it. Hopefully, it will go well!

I have struggled to learn ASL for years, every since I learned the alphabet. I learned good morning and good night after that. Bought a few books that were. So complicated. Watched several vids on UA-cam n they always go too fast. This is the 1st one I was able to understand except for 1 or 2 you did low n the closed caption letters were blocking the sign but I learned most of these. Thank you for going slow n keeping it simple. I will continue to follow along. Merry Christmas n a Joyful n healthy 2022.

I am mostly learning sign language to communicate with my hearing friends who always talk far away from each other and in loud places. Such a useful language.
learning sign language is nice, knowing you will make a difference in society and help people HOH or deaf, and especially not knowing if you will ever lose hearing, its nice to know sign language, im saving this to my ASL playlist to watch it again, but now, im going to go to my books, and work on them!, i bough tthem and kidna forgot about them because, we have electronics now, but i should work on it, it will def help.

My apologies, the captions can be tricky since they change sizes depending on each device. If you watch from desktop however, you can adjust the size of the captions. In future videos I will try adjusting the composition to compensate for the closed captions. Thanks for the feedback

Thank you for your educational videos. Thanks to you, I am learning ASL. I decided to learn ASL because I want to communicate with deaf people. I once had a classmate who was a deaf lady and I talked to her so much thanks to her translator, I wish I knew simple signs before meeting her. I know how it feels to have a language barrier and try to make friends (My native language is Spanish, and I learned English when I moved to the USA as a teen).

I'm just starting this sign language journey but I recently saw a video that said the version of welcome you're signing is in more accurate to welcoming someone into your home not to saying you are welcome. Again, I don't know sign language I'm just watching a lot of videos trying to figure it out.
Yes, that is true, for instance many will simply sign back thanks in return but depending on your local community the version in the video may also be used, we encourage students to learn as many variations as you are comfortable with and you’ll be better able to understand a wider range of people

I was the same way, ASL was much easier to learn than verbal languages
You can also write it down here is how I did it
*How are you?*: two fists like a brain then twist next point towards that person
*fine*: 5 then put thumb on chest the slightly wave
*good*: fingers on chin while other hand is flat in front of you. Bring other hand down to flat one
*my name is*: hand flat on chest then two fingers (index and middle) on both hands cross over each other twice
Where are you from? You-from-where. You, from: cross pull finger back. Where: pointer finger wave like telling a child no
I am learning sign language: sign-language-I-learn. Language: cross pointer fingers, bull both fingers opposite directions.
Slow: (I’m right handed so this is how I wrote it)
Left hand out, right hand start at fingers and go up arm a little
Stop: left palm face up right hand comes down sideways

That is actually pretty close, A can look similar to an S, the N is pretty close to T, and Y is a little similiar to Y. The name was Steve :)
