What were the two bonus signs this week?
Chris Gorges McDonalds & Starbucks 🍔🍟☕️
Hi Chris,
I love pizza so it was fun learning the ZZ sign for my favorite tailgate food. 😻🍕🏈💙💚💙
Thanks for another great video. Have a nice day!
@@KT-pv5dq Glad you are enjoying learning all these new signs. Thanks for learning with me 🙂
McDonald’s and Starbucks I love ur videos especially bc I really wanna learn asl
@@larissapillittere1395 That's great, keep up the great work 👍
Yayyyy,,, I got allll this sign's ty😘
I'm so lucky my cousin knows sign, after every video, I have shown her what I've learned and we have a small conversation in asl.
That's great!
My cousin doesn't want to learn it with me🙁
@@emajagic5942 ); *hug*
i wish i had someone to do it with but i dont. i still really wanna learn it just harder
This is so very hard to memorize when I don't have anyone to sign with and practice with. Everyone in my family including myself can hear just fine. I can not get them to show any interest in signing. I'm trying very hard to put all this to muscle memory. So far I have the alphabet and 1-100 down pat and can spell anything but all the signs for objects, actions etc is very overwhelming for my 53 year old brain.
Yes, that can make learning the language very difficult. Knowing the alphabet and the numbers 1-100 is a great start! My parents learned sign language in their 50s as well and had a hard time with feeling overwhelmed at times too. I do plan on creating some more videos to address those concerns soon, but in the meantime you may want to check out this post I did about neuroplasticity here instagram.com/p/B19YGhiHu3G/ and this video with tips on how to continually make progress in the language here ua-cam.com/video/3t0nZO6X7t8/v-deo.html.
I've also worked with some students one-on-one that are learning ASL in their 50s and have helped them make some significant progress. If that is something you might be interested in, feel free to send me an email at chris@aslbasics.com.
Keep up the great work!
You can do it!
Commando602 I’m learning too! And I don’t know anyone who knows asl.
@@brittanyguy1400 That's great that you're learning ASL too, if you'd like to practice with others, this month I'm holding free weekly practice sessions for anyone wanting to put into practice what they've been learning

I have the same problem with my family! What i do is watch the video, or read a lesson, and i write down every sign in the video in a notebook. Say i learnt pop, apple, banana, and grape in one lesson. i would watch the teacher sign it a couple times, write the words down, and then practice without the video. And if you need to check, you can o back to the video!
Damn these lessons are making me wish I knew more deaf people...
I work at a grocery store, and one day a deaf woman came through my line. She had a helper with her, but I felt so bad I didn’t know what she was saying! These are helping me so much, and I’m watching and trying to learn ASL as much as I can. Thank you!
That’s great, thanks for sharing your experience so far, keep up the great work
I’m trying to learn ASL
1. Because i have less than half of my hearing
2. I’m working at a summer camp, and you never know what could happen
3. It’s a great set of skills to learn
How I’m learning?
Day 1. Watch the first part, write down what I should know
Day 2. Review signs, watch the second video, write down and practice what I should know
Day 3. Review, 3rd part, write down what I should know, practice
Day 4. Review, 4th part, write down and practice everything I learned, review what I don’t remember
I hope this helps someone!
Great system!
Thanks!
That is seriously genius!
Well now we are all curious what candy would mean in Mexican sign language! hahaha 🤣
i’m really proud of myself, i’m teaching my baby cousin (4 years old) some sign language! i’m getting better at it, also! i’ve taught her “eat/food” and “drink”, so far! 😄😄
That's awesome! Keep it up 😃
Chris Gorges thank you!
We taught our daughter the signs for “more, eat, drink, milk, sleepy.” She was about two years old and this was before we had the internet.
I taught my kids to sign before they could speak and it made it so much easier to communicate and they used it for a few years after they started speaking as well!
I need a practice partner 😭
Thats tough. I actually plan on creating online practice groups since there are many that are in your same situation that would like to learn but dont have others locally to practice with. I'll let you know once I get it up and running
Thank you :)
I have the group practice sessions up and running. You're welcome to join if you get the chance aslbasics.com/asl-group-practice-sessions/
Where are you from?
Maryland
You make it so easy for me. I'm taking ASL for the first time.
I'm glad that you're learning ASL, keep up the great work 👍
I love how the folks who came up with ASL were practical, and seemed to have a sense of humor. The sign for “full” is perfect. Thanks for the great videos! Don’t even know anyone deaf but when I run across someone hopefully I can actually converse with them. 🔥
My 16 month old is my practice partner. I am teaching him sign language by learning myself. It allows me to practice and its so cool to see him respond back.
Yes! That is awesome. We taught our daughter sign language from birth and it really helped us communicate with her when she was a baby. Keep it up :D
Toddlers are really fun language study buddies. My daughter is 2 and it's so nice studying with her.
i've been trying for SO LONG to find a good asl page!!! thank you. i'm so excited to learn
Glad that you are enjoying ghe videos and are learning sign language 👍
My son and I are loving the lessons! Learning to sign was something I'd wanted to do for ministry for years. Finally have the time, albeit while quarantining at home. "[At] breakfast, coffee I like."
Glad you're making the best out of a bad situation, keep up the learning 🙌
You’re awesome man. I just started to learn maybe a week ago and I’ve already learned so much through you.
That's great that you started learning sign language and I'm glad that you are already learning so much!
About how long do you think it would take to be fluent in sign? I am committed and really would like to become an interpreter.
Depends on the person, how much they immerse themselves in the language, and other factors (and your definition of fluency) but for some it can be as little as a year or so ... mileage certainly does vary though. The more committed you are, the faster you'll learn.
Starbucks and Mickey D’s. Nicely presented
Thanks
Lol, Mickey D’s 🤣
I took asl for half a year in high school and I've lost almost all memory of it. I want to relearn and this is helping so much. I now remember how we would write out sentences such as "i want to eat" and change it to "i want eat" to help our minds get accustomed to it. I also just signed a sentence i made up based off of this video. Thank you! Subscribed and I hope to absorb more 🤩
That's great!
@Chris Gorges you're awesome! I'm a Portuguese speaker, living in the USA and I've been learning a lot ASL from your videos! The only thing about sign language I knew before was the alphabet. I learned the alphabet when I was 12 yrs old because I had a friend who was deaf and never forgot it! I work in a grocery store, last week they hired a new employee and he's deaf. When I heard about him, I just came on UA-cam looking for some sign language lesson because I really would like to be helpful. I thought that sign language was something universal but I found out that it's not! Learning ASL is double difficult for me because English is not my native language! I've been watching your videos several times during the day and guess what? I was totally able to introduce myself, to introduce other people to him, to say where I'm from and ask about him, to ask him to slow down, to show me how to sign kitchen (because I work in the kitchen). But Chris, when he answered me, It was extremely difficulty to me to understand him and I think because I was watching him and trying to translate to Portuguese, 🙄 I felt like a parrot able to speak but not able to understand the answers! Is there some specific tip in my case? Thanks a lot for sharing with us all your knowledge about ASL! May I ask you what was your first motivation to learn ASL??? 😉
I AM SO EXCITED, I learned the alphabet a year or two ago not realizing I could start a whole language that will help me make more new connections! Amazing video!!!
I work at a grocery store, and one day a deaf woman went through my line. She had someone with her, but I felt so bad I had no idea what she wanted! These are helping me so much, and I hope I can put this to use if ever the need be. Thank you for this!
I have a friend and we both learned ASL last summer and signed stuff to each other in class and people looked at us weird.
lol, yeah, sometimes that happens
my best friend moved away and we facetime every day, we never really had anything to do on facetime until we found your videos on ASL you have really helped me learn ASL. I wouldn't have been able to learn ASL without you and your videos. Thank you!
That's awesome, I'm glad to hear that you've been finding the videos helpful
It is so helpful how you explained when you raise your eyebrows and when you lower them, thank you!!! 🙌🏻
Welcome!
I love your videos! I recently got a teacher for asl who teacher one hearing and one deaf child and your videos have helped so much! I can now begin to communicate with them and it’s soo exciting
Ahhh! Thank you for doing this! I am completely deaf now and this helped me a lot. Again, thank you. I’ve been deaf for 3 years and starting December 21st it will be 4.
I got to use my very limited signing today. The people who clean our office use asl and it was soooo fun signing with them.
Wow, that's awesome!
I don't know why, but some of these are just funny to me, like the McDonald's one. You make the M shape with your hands, then move them in an M motion. You make an M with M's
Lol, yeah, that is pretty funny when you stop and think about it 🤔😆
Loved your classes so far. I'm from Brazil and I'm learning asl with you. Thank you so much!!!
Awesome! I love Brazil, been there twice so far. Glad that you are wanting to learn ASL 👍 Obrigado!
I'm waiting for the moment I mix up the signs for hamburger and marriage/spouse lol
lol
Thank you, Chris, for making ASL so easy to learn and grasp. Basically, learning this to make my world a better place and more inclusive regardless of any impairments.
That’s great!
I have been learning for three days And have memorized most phrases
And I know the alphabet now!
That's great!

Aaaaaa ok
@KG It does?
@KG Oh, that's not bad. *Love is love and I'm trying to say that in ASL but I can't because I'm a noob :p*
OMG! I just discovered that I can turn the captions off so that I can see your hands!🤣 For anybody else who is old and "not cool," like me, if you tap your phone screen, you'll see two lower-case letter c's in a box. Tap that little box and voila! No more captions. To bring captions back, tap that box again! I'm excited and ready to roll. Thanks again for these great lessons and insights!
Thanks for sharing 👍
Hi Chris from your teaching of sign language I have learn a lot now I can make many sentences from the basics .I have spent my time usefully during this pandemic watching your videos and learning so much. Thank you and please stay safe during this pandemic.

Very informative. I learned a lot

You’re a really great ASL teacher I wish I had someone to practice with though,I decided to learn since it’s deaf awareness month and I’ve been seeing a bunch of videos on it lately, also French is to hard to learn

I’m crying at the dislike sign 😂😂😂 it makes all the difference with her facial expressions which is so important! Thank you for these videos ❤️
Yep, facial expressions can make a huge difference in the meaning of a sign lol. Glad you enjoy the videos :)
@@ChrisGorges I just realized I typed her by mistake lol I meant his! & No seriously thank you Chris! I'm slowly trying to build my ASL, finally after years of wanting to & these basic videos can guide someone so far! Also looking to get into some in-class courses in some school ☺️

@@ChrisGorges yes! I'm looking into checking it out! Thank you again :)
This was really fun to do and easy thanks so much!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for the video. It's really helpful for ASL beginners!
I'm glad that this video helped you out :)
Thanks so much for your videos! Super easy to follow and unlike some other ASL beginner/learning courses I've found at other platforms yours seems more...approachable. JUST getting started, and obviously everyone is different, but what would you suggest in terms of hours a day practicing/learning? I'm quarantining and unemployed so I've got all the time in the world... Just don't want to burn out. Thanks again!
Thanks, I'm glad that you are finding the videos useful. My suggestion would be to start small and work your way up. Better to have small wins that inspire you to do more than have a big fail that discourages you from continuing at all. You might find this helpful in regard to setting up good habits for learning ua-cam.com/video/lF0Rj_DeNb8/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for making these videos! Your explanations are very helpful, I appreciate that you explain the motions thoroughly! Just out of curiosity, how do companies like McDonald's and Starbucks get their own sign? Do the companies come up with a sign themselves, or do members of the ASL/Deaf community come up with the sign on their own and it spreads throughout the community?
I'm glad that you are finding these videos helpful. The signs come from within the Deaf community
Wow, this is so amazing Chris Gorges thank you so very much, I have learn so much from you, just wondering if you give classes, May God continue to use you in blessing others

That is great that you are finding the videos helpful :D
Chris Gorges, I’m actually South African learning ASL. It’s extremely interesting to me. :)
I just bumped into videos and I am learning and refreshing. Can you do some church words? Like I'm learning to translate for church but I am such a beginner but they want me to go ahead and learn so I can practice while at church went we have deaf friends and family members coming to church. Some of the words I already know is church, Bible, Jesus, Christ, cross, holy, Glory, forever, Heaven, God, but could you do some of the Bible or biblical words that are little tougher besides the ones I just listed?? I do no the sign for blood.
For me the hardest thing is translating what someone else to say LOL that's where the practice. And sometimes I get frustrated cuz I feel like I'm not going to learn it I love you so much and I know that I can do it it just I need practice Partners LOL
Thanks!
Welcome! Thanks for the support 😄
I need this, I work in restaurants,,ty mr Gorges, 😊🤝💝
Very welcome, glad you found the video helpful
Amazing! Got so many more useful signs mastered! thank you! I have a question though if you wanted to ask someone what they wanted for lunch would you sign you, want, lunch, what? or what, you, want, lunch?
Great question, you could actually do both, although in proper ASL the subject (or topic) would go first, so if your primarily talking about lunch, it could go like this- Lunch You Want What? Although, I've seen it signed a variety of ways
Me and my friend learned the alphabet in sign language so we could talk to each other in class but it got annoying finger spelling everything so we’re learning this as well
Nice 👍
Thank you for watching. So I can understand you to tell about it.
Oh ya..yes I am coming back to review😁
I'm from South Africa and I'm learning too
👍
I actually did have a quick question! I am just now trying to learn sign language for future purposes to have conversations with people. I am wondering if all article words are not used. Like, do we ever include article words when we do sign language or are they always left out?
They're only used in Signed Exact English, which is ASL vocabulary with English grammar. Otherwise no, they're never used.
I want candy breakfast. Is that right in asl grammar? Or is there a sign for ‘for’?
Yes, there is a sign for "for", however if you signed "I want candy for breakfast", that would be a good example of PSE (ASL signs used in English grammar order) whereas a couple ways you could sign that sentence in ASL grammar would be "breakfast I want eat what? Candy" or "breakfast, want eat candy", or something else similar to that
1:55
Thank you
You're welcome :)
I literally just signed What’s up, my name is Kendra, I’m hungry, want to get some food? I’m so proud
Wow, nice work 👍
@@ChrisGorges all thanks to you! I would’ve never been this close to sign language without u! Tysm!!!!!
When asking questions does the question word go at the end of the sentence always or is there a rule that applies? When signing “Do you want to go out to lunch” you sign You want lunch but “Where do you want to eat?” you sign You want eat where?. When it’s an open ended question, example 2, the question word (where) is at the end of the sentence as opposed to a yes or no answer is signed directly (example 1)?
Hi. As many of you followers, I can hear, and don't have anybody to practice with. Do you offer videos where you ask to sign certain phrases, or dialogues and then show the correct way afterwards? (like you did a couple of times in this video) For someone like me, that would be a tremendous help. Thank you for your time to create all your videos!
Yeah, we do that every week during our free practice sessions. We will host them on Zoom and all are welcome to join and we also will record the Q&A portions and make them available on Patreon. Here are more details if you'd like to join us next Wednesday aslbasics.com/asl-group-practice-sessions/
@@ChrisGorges Thank you for the update, I will keep that in mind. Usually I work Wednesday evenings, but if that ever changes, I might just do that :)
Good tutorials! I have a new employee in my department. With masks she isn't able to read lips without people taking down their masks. Not recommended in our current environment. I'm learning as to make it safer for her and everyone we work with.
Wow, that is amazing that you're learning sign for a new employee in your department!
So how would I properly speak when asking questions? I know non deaf people usually speak while signing. Would I say “What do you want to eat or do you want eat what?” I’m talking about what would come out of my mouth not the actually signing. Does that make sense?
I'm from Canada..... need to know the sign for Tim Horton's. Would it just be a "T" and "H" followed by the coffee sign?
I personally don't know, although Laura Berg Life might be a good person to ask, she is Canadian and is an ASL instructor. It is fairly common for popular store's or brands to be initialized, so it may be signed as "T-H Coffee"
Do you use closing signals?
I really need help! I'm just about to graduate from a 2-yr ITP and I still struggle tremendously with ASL grammar! Most of my interpretations are more english than ASL, and I lack sufficient vocabulary knowledge. I wish there was more mentoring available. Now I'm getting ready to start a bachelor's ITP and I feel like I'm behind. :-(
So sorry that you have been struggling, ASL grammar is certainly tough, especially when you are interpreting. Both my wife and I offer interpreting mentorships on a case by case basis, feel free to contact us at chris@aslbasics.com and we can set up a meeting with you .
Chris Gorges thank you! Just emailed you now. I appreciate your response!

Chris Gorges thank you soooo much
What does the candy sign mean in Mexico?
Yayy i found a practice partner
Great!
if I'm talking/mouthing while I sign should my mouth move in english order or sign order?
Depends on which mode of sign language you are using and who you are communicating with. Some Deaf prefer that you don't mouth at all and sign ASL focusing on concepts, facial expressions, and mouthmorphemes. Others on the other hand may prefer you mouth words as you sign them in an English order (which is a sign language mode referenced to as PSE, Pidgined Signed English). So, get to know the person you are communicating with and adapt to their preferences if possible 🙂
@@ChrisGorges Thanks, that makes sense. I figure in situations where one is communicating to deaf and hearing people at once, PSE makes the most sense. But ASL grammar order is ideal when communicating primarily to ASL users.
Yep 👍
i love sigh language its the best
👍
3:47 what is the Mexican sign for this?
Send me a DM on Instagram @aslbasics and I'll let you know
Okay but what did the Mexican sign for candy mean. I don't have Instagram 😂
Hey I was wondering if maybe this was because he's older, but my grandpa taught me that pizza was signed by making the letter p and moving it in a z shape
Im trying to learn because i think its a great language
That's great
I am working with a student who is non verbal and is learning ASL. If he doesn’t use the words to, is, or are when you are teaching him to to sign how do you teach him these words when he is reading a sentence ?
If he's hearing but can't speak, he probably knows the words receptively, so he can just connect it with that knowledge. You can just tell him to read it in his head, and write it when he's writing.
If he doesn't have good receptive verbal skills, but learns to sign fluently, then he'll be learning English and learning to read simultaneously, just like Deaf kids or ESL students.
What does candy mean in mexico??
Soda is my favorite sign to do lol
Yeah, to this day, its still one of my favorite signs
