As a deaf/HOH person I want to thank you for emphasizing how important the facial expressions are when signing. I may understand what a new signer is trying to say but it’s much easier with the correct facial expressions used.
Thank you for your videos. Im a nurse with my first deaf patient. I've binge watched for 2 days now and I can communicate with him. I work the COVID ward so even that video was useful
Dude I started learning sign because of corona virus. I'm glad I did it, now I can actually interact with the deaf community. Also a tip I picked up for all the other learners, watch videos where deaf people only use sign. It helps a lot.
Thank you from Columbus Ohio! I started my ASL journey 3 weeks ago. I've watched all of your videos 2-3 times; they are awesome. I've scheduled the Wednesday Practice Session on my calendar for next week! I'll keep practicing for the upcoming practice session.
I really appreciate these lessons. I started work at a warehouse and was surprised by the number of deaf people working there. I love all the people I work with and I have really wanted to get into their silent world a little.
There has been a lot of ups and downs during this time but I have personally experienced a lot of personal growth and I’m happy and grateful to be in the position I am in. Knowing there is always someone in a harder circumstance.
I love your videos! They are so easy to follow and the pace is great. I have always wanted to learn just because. I’ve met several people who are deaf in my life time and I (being a social butterfly) hated not being able to connect with them. Thanks to your videos I am gaining confidence with every one that I can at least hold a decent conversation. I’ve been teaching my kids with these videos too!
Hi Chris, I love your videos! I started May 1 learning ASL. I spend about an hour a day watching videos and trying to learn 5 words a day. Your videos are so easy to follow! Thank you.
oh no! you spoiled us with the quick review on the comments but this one does not have it!! i love that option as when we are reviewing for the second time is easier to practice clicking in the sign we want to review!!! This was very help full, thank you. For feelings/ emotions, I would like to learn angry/upset, annoyed, surprised, disappointing, anxious, hopeful, grief (oops may be ideas for part 2 of this video!!)
The time stamps unfortunately take quite a long time to do, but I do still include them on a few of the videos. Thanks for the feedback. It's great that you are reviewing the videos to reinforce what you're learning. Keep up the great work! (I'll add those words to my list of to do videos)
Hi Chris, I'm fairly new to ASL I've been learning it on my own for about two months off and on from watching your videos. The hardest part for me is the receptive part of it. It's very difficult to read what others are signing because they sign fast. Whats a good way to learn how to read sign language? Thank you
I'm glad that you are taking it upon yourself to learn sign language, that's great! In regard to reading others signing, the biggest thing is exposure, so try to expose yourself to as much sign language as possible, watching videos, lessons, vlogs, etc. Second, be patient with yourself, it will take time and it may seem like progress is slow, but be persistent and stick to it and you'll get more and more comfortable with the language. In the meantime, if it is a video, feel free to back it up or slow it down. If it's in person, simply ask the person the either slow down or sign what you didn't understand again
Usually, countries have a local sign language that is used by Deaf ones from the region (ie. German Sign Language, French Sign Language, etc) however, with that said, ASL is also widely used around the globe as well. In some areas, like Dubai, there are several sign languages used in the community at the same time (Pakistan, India, Arabic, ASL, and others)
This is an interpreting question. Do you need to know how to simcom to be an amazing ASL interpreter because I can't sign in ASL and speak in English at the same time.
@@tessaw8644 Interpreting is a tricky subject because you'll be interpreting for a very wide array of people with different signing styles and preferences, but yes, I wouldn't worry too much about simcom when you are just getting started
@@ChrisGorges Okay, thanks. I worry that I just won't be able to do simcom and I really want to do ASL interpreting. It's a passion of mine, same for the language of ASL.
Hi! So I saw a few other videos of other ASL and I saw them sign nervous differently. I saw it sign with your hands out, palm down and shaking your dominant hand like you’d shake “So-so”. Is that incorrect or just another way to sign nervous?
Great question, just another variation, although with a slightly more nuanced meaning. It's like you are shaking with nervousness. You can actually see three different variations shown on Signing Savvy, the one you described is the first one while the one I showed is the third
Thank you for these great classes. i have a question, I am sure that you have heard about LSQ sign language in Quebec Canada. is it very different from ASL? I mean, can a ASL signer understand a LSQ signer and vice versa ?
That's a great question! One of my students is from Canada and shared with me this video which does a really good job of explaining the various sign languages used in Canada ua-cam.com/video/TEpXugRwgYI/v-deo.html From what I hear, they share a lot of similarities, however I don't have much experience with it myself.
Would you say "I am feeling sacred" or would you say " feeling sacred I" because I have seen other youtube videos that put it in a diffrent word order. Thanks!
The covid hasn't affeced me much or my job im still working same o same o nothing changed , except more work and same pay..shmk😕. I keep my hands clean. # 1 trasmition of any virus picking it up on surfaces and sharing/spreading what's on your hands.
You talk forever, 2 mins before a single sign. Very over explained. Also there's hundreds of beginner signing videos, cant find any intermediate. At least sign while u promote yourself so we can pick up on whatever we dont already know

What other emotions or feelings would you like to learn how to sign?
Freemason sign language?? Or Illuminati type sign language? I see it everywhere on UA-cam and cant decipher
Is there verb tense in sign ASL? For example, instead of staying im scared, if I said, " that time, I was sacred " ???? Thank you.
Anxiety/ Anxious

Very interesting! I would think that I'm more anxious. Would that be the same sign as nervous?
Depending on contextual meaning, sometimes yes, however, anxiety does have it's own sign as well
