Lyrics:
Oh, Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies
#JohnDenver #WildMontanaSkies #Live #ItsAboutTime #Country
John Denver is fantastic, of course, but I'd like to put in a word here for his backup singer (the woman with red hair). Not only does she know how to accompany a main singer, but I really enjoy her "theatrical-ness" (for want of a better word). She's so into this song and committed to the performance -- it's charming and infectious. That style of performance is not so common nowadays; it's a shame.
Pat Hawk. A Kearny Komet, class of '68.
The same thing occurred to me. In fact, I just made a comment about that woman a few minutes ago; it sounded rich when her vocals kicked in at "His mother's brother took him in...."
@@nathanfitzgerald6651 yes. They harmonized very well.
You've said it all!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This song was released with Emmylou Harris doing backup. I don't know who the Redhead is.
I'm 71, former USMC Officer, rtd FBI Agent....from Montana. I traveled the world, missing terribly my folks, friends and Montana....John managed to "patch" the hole in my heart so many times I can't begin to count. I pray he's singing for the LORD...hope when I get there, he has a concert! Thanks John!
semper fi! i hope so too
Born and raised in Philadelphia, but Montana is my home. I fled an abusive adoptive family, and this state has really embraced me with open arms. Been here five years and I have no intention to leave.
Montana is a wildly beautiful place - been there a couple of times, but for me Michigan is home and always will be. For me, nothing is better than sailing the Great Lakes. But I can sure understand falling in love with Montana.
I'm from Tasmania and I enjoyed reading what you wrote, My father and I used to listen to John every Friday night, As the west coast of Tassie is very rugged and full of mountains it felt like he was singing about our small rugged little place , I hope my dad is in heaven listening to John
The
Fun fact, Pat Hawk (who sings with John in this) is the skateboarder Tony Hawk's sister!
No way!!!
I cant believe it 😳
She was at his funeral. As was most of his band.
And it doesn't even need to make a DNA test... Same face, with a longer hair!
Pat Hawk is also married to Alan Deremo, who was a member of John’s band.
I will carry john denver and his music with me
the rest of my life..
How are you? So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song
Me too
John Denver's all-time best song! And this is his best performance of it ever. There's nothing like driving a pick-up truck across the continental divide in summer in Montana with this song going full blast. That was 20 years ago I last did that. I listen to this song even today and I'm back in Big Sky Country loving life.
Someday I’ll live in Montana!!!
This song is too underrated. When he and the woman sing the line "Wild Montana Skies" I always feel a chill
My favorite version is the one with Emmylou Harris. I grew up on this concert (it was recorded, so, commercials and all) so I’d watch it all the time, but this woman (don’t know her name) just never did it for me.
I wish he and Emmylou performed it in a concert (or if they did, there’s no video of it).
The only other version I like of this song is a live performance (it’s here on UA-cam) with a woman named Elizabeth Lamers (she was a background singer in three of his albums) although you can’t hear her as equally as John in that video.
I sooo agree...smile
One of my top 5 John Denver songs.
Her name is Rene Armand
@@winterblossom9546 Mine, too. I don't know who she is, but I know it isn't Emmylou Harris. The only reason I can come up with that JD didn't use her is that she was unavailable.
I'm a millenial, 23, and I like this old music better than the new shit that they put out. This is PURE TALENT! NO AUTOTUNE!
You're a zoomer
I’m 19, and we’re on the same boat, pal
Lucas Bitencourt I’m 13. Same page mate
38 and I love this comment (and the responses) so much. You have no idea the shit that I took for my music tastes when I was your age! :D
poorjf how do you think I feel? Everyone saying that JD, Mama Cass etc. are terrible. That everyone these days listens to that Billy Eyelash (or whatever it is) and tell me to learn some “real music” on guitar. This is real music not that crap nowadays!
I like that redheaded female singer, her vocal harmonies were perfect for this song.
it's such a shame that we lost such a rich soul who cared deeply about nature and preservation, its because of him that i decided to go to college in the wildlife field.
❤
I dont know what you mean he was a country boy not an environmentalist
@@raijingaming3193 he was both
@@lauchfranzos your right, not talking about John but some people care a little too much.
That’s really cool, Colt. I remembering crying the day I learned he had died.
That he did. He gave the wilderness a voice, a beautiful voice.
My husband and I were married on June 27, 1982 and put the honeymoon back to see John on the 28th.
Pat Hawk (female backup vocals) really brings fun, heart and brightness to John Denver's superb performance. I'm glad she was brought out to the front for the audience to see.
Thank you SO MUCH for Pat’s name!!!!✌️
@@lizgorman5634 YW. I was so impressed by her wonderful, enthusiastic backup vocals during "The Wildlife Concert" that I just HAD to find out who she was! I was just a young guy entering High School when John Denver's popularity started to soar and he quickly became one of my favorites. Best Wishes.
So this is Tony Hawk's sister.
John should be considered a national treasure! He is one of the best sons of this land and the Earth in general!❤
I love John denver. His legend will never die.
agree
Love this backup singer as well.
I still get irritated of all the music that was lost when he died.....I was always (and still am) a big John Denver fan - that voice... I remember the day (same as when I heard Elvis died) - and I just sat there saying no . . that cannot be!! I listen to CD's anytime I'm driving for any length of time -- his music makes you happy, makes you calm - even makes you cry .... what a talent!!! Miss you John - thank you for the music!!!
I so miss this era of music.
Best. Ever.
Who doesn’t
yeah the only music people make now is rap and its sad
I know right!
Too good, a bygone era...
So I'm taking my 3 stepdaughters, 20 year old twins and their older sister who is 25, out to Cameron, Montana in just another couple of weeks,,,they are beyond excited. The oldest just sent all of us a link to this song. I have misty eyes right now. They lost their sweet mother 4 years ago, and their dad has never, ever been there for them, not even one day. I've raised them with their mother since the twins were 5 and Kk was 10. I know what song we'll be listening to on our way to the ranch from Bozeman Airport. I grew up listening to John Denver on the TV, back in the '70's. Really proud of my girls, they really like music from that decade. God bless their mother Heather, God bless John Denver, and God bless Montana.
Don't know how this makes you feel but I want you to submit your thoughts on this year's tribute remembrance day of John's this year, on this note albums of all his songs will be made available via CDs, Internet.
Thanks for the much love all these years 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🌷🌷☝
25 years ago today the world lost a fantastic musicians and an amazing human being thank you for your amazing music you left behind 🏴🏴
Wonderful harmony!^^
Legendary singer/songwriter, performer, actor, and humanitarian... This man was real, and so was his music! The music world isn't what it used to be... I really miss the days when you turned on the radio, and they played good music!!
Paul Powell ... you are so right about that! I can't believe that some even call it music... it's not even worth listening to!
You mean Mythic singer/songwriter
That 70's Girl I agree with everything you wrote about John Denver, and miss him so much. I haven't turned on a radio in YEARS, and never will again, unless they quit playing that cacophonous vulgar noise they now play and actually play MUSIC again.
Absolutely! Totally with you!*!! 😃
A wonderful wordsmith, musician & artist of life ... 🎶😊❤️💞💕
I can't agree no more....
God Bless the Great State of Montana!!!
This song seems so cleansing somehow. His backing singer is flawless. Such a pleasure to watch. John is much loved & much missed . His absence is very difficult to cope with. Hate being without him.
I feel the same way even 27 years later. The world has seemed thinner, emptier without his music and vision. His work anchored my young life.
There is nobody like John Denver, miss him so much! Such meaningful lyrics, just wonderful!!
Born and raised in Colorado but live in the Bitterroot Valley now…a bit of Heaven….always loved John Denver💕
I'll add my two cents worth. Pat Hawk seems to bring a joy to the performance, loving the song, the audience and especially the fun of singing with John Denver. Just a great presentation by two stellar artists!!
I am proud that I was born and that I live in Montana!
I miss John Denver.
I learned to play guitar and perform by listening tioo John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot. I was a fan of John Denver when it wasnt "cool" Actually played a couple of his songs on the street in San Francisco in the mid 70s. Many a bar and small venues also. He and Gordon helped me form my own style and left me with musical memeories of my lifes journey. So much of it spun on a song.
Two of the best concerts my husband and I attended were by John Denver. First one in Nashville and 2nd in Salt Lake City. Both were wonderfully entertaining!!
How are you? So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song
"His mother died that summer and he never learned to cry. He never knew his father and he never did ask why. He never knew the answers that would make an easy way, but he learned to know the wilderness and to be a man that way."
This is what the world needs to be listening to 60s n 70s great time to grow up on do it all over if i could im now 63yrs old my daughter is 37yrs old h listen to Mr Denver best of times im listening to him has i post
Great performance. John and Pat are great together.
Ah John, we miss you and love you so. You are the Eagle
How are you? So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song
It's a wonderful to introduce this man to millenials who have never heard of him and watch at their amazement at his voicing so beautifully their deepest concerns. Love you still John.
Ruth Lewis you are so right!

I met John in 1994. He was a great guy. I have always been a fan but appreciate his music even more as I grow older. Pat Hawk is awesome too!
Real immortal Legend...simply...
Yes, John loved the wildlife and he did so much for all of it. I really miss him . There will never be another like him and may he rest in peace. God bless him for all he did for everyone.
amen.....
Every time I hear this song I feel that it should be made the official Montana state song
Donald Brent 😂😂😂
Donald Brent actually John didn’t write Country Roads
Donald Brent yeah exactly, I’m not trying to take any credit away from him, but instead give credit to everyone who wrote it. It’s not that well known he co-wrote the song!
He should have been state senator
If you know the real state song, IT REALLY SUCKS!!!! Learned it in first grade in 1951. Never did like it!!! This one always brings tears to my eyes.
John Denver inspired a generation. God rest his creative soul. These two, such magic.
Painting a story with his coloured tunes and notes of countless myriad hues.... Timeless Denver... Crystalline voice and unabashed earnestness... Miss him badly in these artificial times...
I miss John It's been so many years but I still love his music.
Such a rare talent. He could sing it as good in a public concert as he could in a recording studio. I loved his music, what he stood for and his contribution to millions of young people of his era.
What a wonderful human being!! 😃
Beautiful wordsmith, musician & humanitarian, lover of life ... 😊❤️💞💕
RIP John...we miss you much.
I miss John so deeply. His music was generational. I named my daughter Calypso. She is 12 now and she will tell you about why she got her name and what it means. It was because of his song and the marine biology vessel named Calypso. It was in honor of John Denver and the marine biology vessel named Calypso who was captained by Jacques Cousteau. True story.
Its really ironic, that an immigrant from (East India) is a lover of country music, and graduated on John Denver on his radio station finally makes it to North America. Stay blessed John. You were taken too young.
SO GOOD AND GOLDEN! 😎😎😎😎😎😍😍😍😍😍😁😁😁😁😁😭😭😭😭😭🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🌇🌇🌇🌇🌇🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I have this concert on CD. Cost me like $5 at Target and it's honestly probably the most played album I own.
@D Porto that's Pat Hawk.
Magnificent talent…. Truly missed in this world …..❤️💕
John's death was true loss the music industry but not everyone will not recognize that.
do you think charlie rich was jealous
Who
God took him to sing for him. He loaned him to the world for a short time and he wanted him back to sing for him.

A beautiful story of the American Wild West.
Still miss him after so many years. His caring for nature and love of the wild is so needed in this generation. One of the greatest entertainers that gave a voice to wake up so many to the plight of conservation. Cannot imagine what he would think of the condition of the world now,
What a song writer, what a talent, what a person. Every time I listen to this it just makes me smile. Music today just doesn’t do that.
He was born in the Bitterroot Valley in the early morning rain
Wild geese over the water heading north and home again
Bringing a warm wind from the south
Bringing the first taste of the spring
His mother took him to her breast and softly she did sing
Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies
His mother died that summer and he never learned to cry
He never knew his father and he never did ask why
And he never knew the answers that would make an easy way
But he learned to know the wilderness and to be a man that way
His mother's brother took him in to family and his home
Gave him a hand that he could lean on and a strength to call his own
And he learned to be a farmer and he learned to love the land
And he learned to read the seasons and he learned to make a stand
Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies
On the eve of his twentyfirst birthday he set out on his own
He was thirty years and running when he found his way back home
Riding a storm across the mountains and an aching in his heart
Said he came to turn the pages and to make a brand new start
Now he never told a story of the time that he was gone
Some say he was a lawyer, some say he was a John
There was something in the city that he said he couldn't breathe
And there was something in the country that he said he couldn't leave
Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies
Now some say he was crazy, some are glad he's gone
Some of us will miss him, we'll try to carry on
Giving a voice to the forest, giving a voice to the dawn
Giving a voice to the wilderness and the land that he lived on
Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies
Oh Montana, give this child a home
Give him the love of a good family and a woman of his own
Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eyes
Give him the wild wind for a brother and the wild Montana skies

This is one of my favorites of John Denver. Pat Hawks does a great job here and Emmylou Harris does great on the album version. The members of the band at the Wildlife concert deserve to be given credit also.
A lot of the band are Elvis TCB band amazing musicians when you have Glen Dee Harden and James Burrton backing you. You are truly blessed ❤
That guitar solo was EPIC!
I once had the privilege and pleasure to play the very same 12 string John is playing in this video. Long story of how it happened. Good memory! This is near my favorite of all John's songs.
This is so beautiful! What a voice!!
John denver, so beautiful, brought happiness to the world
A LEGEND! I was so lucky to see you in concert a year before you died. You live on in your music!
That’s one of my favorites from this concert and I listen to it nonstop and it looks like both JD and the incomparable Pat Hawk know how to sing that harmony with quality tone!
I was so excited to hear him playing again and sounding better than ever. He was making a big comeback and he was happy to be performing and he loved life. What a beautiful person he was. His music will live on forever. His music had passion and the love for nature in them. Nobody else will ever be able to write beautiful songs like that. Thank you John Denver for all of your beautiful music. Rest in peace.
John will live through his music,l loved him. He loved and appreciated nature. As I do. ❤😢
Phenomenal
Loved getting off the plane at Denver airport and they were playing Rocky Mountain High!
Sister Goldenhair omg I would have cried
Amen to that. Many public places in West Virginia you'll hear "Country Roads" all the time. He had a travelers heart, and he honored many places in those travels with a song.
Very cool. I'd've LOVED that too!

I used to live in Bozeman, MT for 4 years during mid 70's. Listening to his songs remind me of my college days in those years. I never grow tired of listening to his songs even now. He was and remains my favorite singer of all time.
What an artist he was!
A great song and a great production by all! I miss these days! joy
This is one of those performances that makes me wish I could "Like" a UA-cam video over and over and over again. I never tire of this song, and this performance of it is exceptionally satisfying...
