Just a prayer. May the American people be like this, like John Denver's audience. Men and women, black and white, of all ages and possibly many other social classes. All together in harmony, what serenity and kindness in your eyes.
About 10 years ago, I was standing on a subway platform in NYC. I was on my way home from an awful day at work. I was late on my rent, my car had been towed, my bank account was overdrawn, and I had just used the last ride on my MetroCard. I was hungry and I knew I didn't have any food at home. I wouldn't be paid for another 2 days. As I stood on this train platform, a homeless man with a guitar sang this song, tears on his face. I gave him the last $3 in my wallet and stood there on that platform and cried with him while he sang. This song will always remind me of that moment.

I turn on this song, close my eyes and here I am standing on the road that goes into the distance beyond the horizon, where the sun is slowly setting. Someone taps me on the shoulder, I turn around and see an old man with the face of John Wayne. And he, smiling barely noticeably from under the brim of his hat, tells me - There are things, son, that you cannot understand with your mind, but only with your heart...

It is one of four official West Virginia state songs. Denver and his 2 co-composers debuted the song December 30, 1971 at the small Cellar Door music club in Georgetown, Washington, DC.
Our Swedish "John Denver" Ulf Lundell made one of the greatest songs Ive ever heard, "Öppna landskap", which translates to "Open Landscapes", is often regarded as a second unofficial national anthem of Sweden, cherished for its celebration of freedom, nature, and Swedish identity.
Last Sunday, 11/5/2023,in Frankfort Germany, this was played during the Chiefs/Dolphins game there. Suddenly, 50,000 fans from all over the world sang along in unison and it was breathtaking. With all the hate in the world, for 3 minutes during an NFL game in Frankfort, Germany, John Denver united us all in song
I read that the Brisbane Lions play it every match. They are an Australian Football Club. It’s also played at every every football game at the Univ, of West Virginia.

This song brings a smile to my face and tears to my eyes. My mom wanted this played at her funeral, so we did. I miss my mom and my home state of West Virginia.
After three brutal combat tours in Vietnam I was discharged to meet no one as I walked out the gate. I spent two years on the road looking America and for the boy that was lost somewhere in the jungles. living this song, meeting the greatest people, was the greatest of times. I’m much older now at 77 and finally found that boy and the America that I lost. I’ve walked down many of those country roads John sings about. Whenever I’m a bit blue I play this song and it takes me back. Thanks John for the memories.
One of the saddest times in America was the reception many Vietnam vets did not receive when they returned. Thank you for your bravery and courage and welcome back all these years later. ☮☮☮☮
I sang this to my mom when I was a child and sang it to her again days before she passed this past July...it will always have a special place in my heart. ❤
I think of my mom when I hear this song. She passed away a long time ago, but this song makes me feel close to her. Sorry for your loss and I hope your heart heals quickly. God bless you and may your mother RIP
I'm from Indonesia. This song is very famous here. Sung by all ages, from children to adults. Maybe this song can be a song that unites humans in the same thing: desire to "go home" [in Indonesia we call it mudik]. John Denver is amazing, miss him a lot🌾🌾🌾
Dear Surfer Rosa, yes, I agree with you. This song contains universal human values. And, don't forget, this is a very beautiful song. Bravo John Denver 🌾🌾🌾
@@MrMikerk As an American, I'm very happy that you appreciate this song as much as we do here. It may be about "West Virginia" but I'm glad its so clear that its really about so much morem
Yes, we already know that the lyrics of this song are about West Virginia but we don't care about that. First because of the beauty of this song and second, the main message that we captured from this song is "go home". These two things are very universal. Thanks to John Denver for this great song 🌾🌾🌾
We've all heard about you New England girls, even in Wisconsin/Minnesota where I'm from. ;-) This is a great song. Look how it's bringing people from all over the planet together in the comments. Just messin' with you. All the best. 🙂
In the company of the greatest guitar players of all time.... and such a nice guy. I have met him twice in the airport. The first time I had my daughter with me and he was so nice to her. She was 14 and a violinist. She had her instrument with her and when he saw the case he started to ask her thoughts on various music that she played. He was genuinely interested in her music. The second time I met him he was sitting across and one row up from me on a plane. I introduced myself and told him about how his meeting and talking to my daughter was so great for her. He remembered the occasion!!! God it is nice to see such a superstar behave like a gentleman and be so nice to a young fan. Thanks for so much great music....
I live in Argentina, and even today at 74 years old I am accompanied by his songs that reached my heart, long before I knew his lyrics. The days in the country where I spent my vacations in winter and summer, rural roads and mountains silhouetted by reddish sunsets are associated with my early childhood. During my youth I discovered that his songs and his music softened my nostalgia because somehow I also felt included. His actions in favor of peace and the preservation of nature speak of his spiritual greatness. Thank you John for continuing to exist among us.
Music is a gift from our Creator! Jesus is the reason for our existence..... for all things were made by Him and for Him. He lived a perfect life (without sin) and then died on a cross. Three days later He arose from the dead. He is coming back soon. If you believe this.....then you will be saved and go to Heaven some day (instead of Hell). It is God's amazing gift to us sinners. You just need to repent of your sins and ask Jesus to be LORD & Saviour.
I was so in love with him in the 70s as a teenybopper. he taught me to play guitar. I cried like a baby when he died. I couldn't sing along with his positive love of life songs without crying. This lasted for a very long time. A big part of my childhood crashed right along with him. Such a horrible end for a beautiful man. God has certainly rested his soul. Thank you, John, for your life and all you shared with us.
For my boy Charlie, who passed away suddenly on 3/27/23. A dog that loved to sing (howl). He would start howling if this song was played, he loved it. We love that boy and he'll always be on our mind when listening to this song
Very sorry you recently lost your buddy, Charlie. An animal's unconditional love is a wonderful thing. Sending you understanding from the country roads in north Georgia. 🐾
I am an African but when I hear this song I get emotional and feel goosebumps..especially when I am going through rough times, the song gives me reasons to be positive and keep going Love,2024
I'm 73 and everytime I hear John sing, or one of his songs...I CRY for the great memories he gave me and everyone who loved him. He's never going to be Gone as long as we remember.
What’s so ironic is that he learned to fly from his father, who was a military pilot. It helped to reunite them, as Denver had said his father was pretty stoic and unemotional. And learning how to fly killed Denver. So sad.
This song will never get old. Mr Denver knew how to capture emotion into a song and turn it into gold. RIP, Mr Denver. Thank you for your musical impact. Whenever I'm driving on a country road, I'll think of you.
When John showed up for the sound test before this concert, he was greeted outside by several fans singing this song. John was so impressed that a song he recorded 23 years before was still so popular then. And 25 years after, it's STILL a much loved song. We lost you too soon, Mr. Denver - those country roads took you home. Thanks for the music and memories, like this one.
This is probably the only song that is universally loved by everyone who knows it. It's so positive and upbeat, and timeless to boot. Makes me want to go to West Virginia, despite beimg from England.

Almost heaven, West Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River Life is old there, older than the trees Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze Country roads, take me home To the place I belong West Virginia, mountain mama Take me home, country roads All my memories gather 'round her Miner's lady, stranger to blue water Dark and dusty, painted on the sky Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye Country roads, take me home To the place I belong West Virginia, mountain mama Take me home, country roads I hear her voice, in the morning hour she calls me The radio reminds me of my home far away Driving down the road, I get a feeling That I should have been home…
Grew up in Short Gap West Virginia and when I was traveling home to see my father who was very ill this was playing on the radio and when I slowed down my wife said what's wrong? I said I am too late he has passed. That line of "should have been home yesterday" still gets to me after all those years.
Early 1980's I was traveling in my car "working as a traveling Union Pipe Welder" through Upper Maine w/my CB Radio on Channel 19. A trucker got on and sang Take Me Home word for word. Of course I grew up during John Denvers rise to stardom. Something about that trucker singing I will never forget.
My mom loves John Denver... She plays it every morning. It reminds her of my late dad because he used to love John Denver as well. Rest in peace, sir...
I remember hearing this song on the radio for the first time and I knew it would be a hit.John's voice is amazing. He will always be one of my favorite singers.
Great song, music is life as they say, when you are happy or in a good mood, you dance to the sound of the music, but when you are sad, you listen to the lyrics. What do you say?
I’m from West Virginia and it’s a beautiful place to live. People are very friendly and welcoming. This song brings a tear to my eyes now that I live in Florida. ❤
We used to camp on the Shenandoah when I was a child. West Virginia, never met a person who wasn't kind and welcoming! Good people! God bless John Denver. I still grieve for his passing. We will sing with him in the next life!
No smoke . No lights. No dancing girls. Just pure soul/folk music . Artist don't make music that last anymore like this song. 100 years from now you will still hear stairway to heaven , country roads, and purple rain , etc . Songs that are timeless.
This man was loved more than he may have ever known. My Daddy raised my brother and I on his beautiful music. And now my Daddy and brother are gone. I am left here alone with just memories.
@Random Music I don't need your permission to do anything. I will say what I want, where I want. Don't like it? Then move along. If you need a safe space, there are plenty of other channels for people seeking attention.
Im from Iran , iam proudly a country boy, unfortunately I'm living in a big city right now , whenever I miss my hometown this song saves me from the crowd traffic and city problems R.I.P John Denver ❤️❤️❤️
He was the first man I had a biggest crush on when I was 12 years old in Korea. I still remember the moment when I was 14 that this was the first English song I was able to hear, listen, or understand the lyrics that I was so, so, so, proud of myself. That was more than 40 years ago. Now.. I am over 55 and I miss him, miss him and will miss him, his songs.. forever.

I got divorced at 27 and after several months of trying to figure my life out I took John's advice. I took a week off of work and hiked eight of Colorado's beautiful 14ers. I saw fire rain, I looked down on silver clouds below me, and I made a lot of awesome mountain friends. The man that I am today was born on that trip. My wife and kids are very grateful for the effect that this song had on me. Thank you Mr. Denver.
There's Mountain Goats on top of Mount Evans. At least there are in late June, and they might have babies. They wouldn't let me pet em though, baby or adult.
I'm from Poland. Never been to West Virginia and probably never will. I'm not in the happiest moment of my life, but that's okay. Thanks to this song, I always know where my place is in this world - with my family. Travelling together, being close to nature, showing my children the beauty of nature. Maybe better times will come, maybe one day I will show my kids West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains... Take care folks, hugs to you and your loved ones from Poland!
I come from Switzerland and every time I hear this song, I think that this is the American spirit. John Denver gives us a wonderful image of what the USA represents.
I was at junior school in ( Rhodesia) Zimbabwe in 1973. My English teacher, Mr Howe was also the music teacher. He taught us to sing along along to this and other Denver songs ❤❤❤❤
Great song, music is life as they say, when you are happy or in a good mood, you dance to the sound of the music, but when you are sad, you listen to the lyrics. What do you say?
John Denver's music represents the social harmony that Americans lost in the chaos of division, anger and hatred. I wish with all my heart that that peace returns one day.
John Denver is one of those legends that never dies.. His body might have died, but his body of work is very much alive, and will be alive for as long as humans have civilisation. He is still huge everywhere in the world, not just USA.
The story of the writing of this song is beautiful. John met two songwriters on tour who played the song for him. He said he had to have it on his next album. They spent the next few days rewriting it, and then played it in a club outside Washington D.C for the first time. I wish I was there that night, It’s said the song got the longest standing ovation ever in that club.
He just makes it feel as if we are in a recording studio. I haven't heard such authentic voices coming from anyone else. Thank you John for giving us this beautiful song .
There was a huge, popular bar in Bangkok named Country Roads, Sadly, it fell to the re-development of the Sukhumvit area in the 90's. The Thai musicians were incredible and did their US counterparts proud. Unforgettable was a singer/guitarist that impersonated Elvis Presley. If you closed your eyes, you could have sworn 'the king' really lives. Happy memories and thanks to our US brothers for the great music, Bless you all
After listening to this song I have a strong urge to go on a road trip up and down the Appalachian region, and I've never been to America! RIP John Denver, you have no idea how much you and your music is loved to this day.
God bless you Mr Denver. I am from Greece, and despite having nothing to do with West Virginia or the USA, I think that this song is one of the best ever written and performed. God bless everyone who misses his hometown.
His songs live forever in my heart - Thank you, Lord, for the gift of his voice. In these terrible times it is such a comfort to know we have and have had decent and good people to keep our spirits up . . .
Hello, Tonia! How are you doing? I hope you are fine and staying safe? This song reminds me of so many things back then. Do you think nowadays country musicians can do better like him?
This is a song I've been hearing since I was young. Although I am Korean, I heard this song on the streets in Korea in the 1990s before I even knew English, so every time I hear this song, I remember that time. The lyrics talk about missing West Virginia, and I can't say I feel exactly the same as the person in the song, but I also miss that time so much that tears come to my eyes every time I hear this song.
I love how this song transcends generations. I grew up listening to him and was so sad when he died in the plane crash. Never got to see him in concert but remember the entire family watching his specials on TV. My kids are growing up in an entirely different world, but they know and play this song. RIP John D your voice brought joy to so many.
I distinctly recall the first time I heard this song on the car radio, over 50 years ago now! My husband and I took my Mom (RIP, Tutti❤) to see John Denver 3 times back in “The Day”. He put on a fabulous Vegas-worthy performance every time. He is truly an American Treasure. I thank the Good Lord for sharing this talented artist with us❤❤️❤️

I teach the Vietnam War in a NYC university. Hats off to you, sir. 😢Happy to hear you found that boy.

I'm from Indonesia. This song is very famous here. Sung by all ages, from children to adults. Maybe this song can be a song that unites humans in the same thing: desire to "go home" [in Indonesia we call it mudik]. John Denver is amazing, miss him a lot🌾🌾🌾
This song is one of the best cultural assets to come out of the U.S.A. ... and Neil Sedaka too
Dear Surfer Rosa, yes, I agree with you. This song contains universal human values. And, don't forget, this is a very beautiful song. Bravo John Denver 🌾🌾🌾

Yes, we already know that the lyrics of this song are about West Virginia but we don't care about that. First because of the beauty of this song and second, the main message that we captured from this song is "go home". These two things are very universal. Thanks to John Denver for this great song 🌾🌾🌾

I thank the Good Lord for sharing this talented artist with us❤❤️❤️
Jim Reeves, Buddy Holly, Richie Vallens, and you explain John Denver too 😮 ?
