  • Plug 'n Play w/ Carby & GCHD Mk-II to make HDMI and Component on your GameCube video a snap! Third-party GameCube options have come a long way since we saw the very first HDMI mods. In this episode, we take an in-depth look at the Carby by Insurrection Industries and the GCHD Mk-II by EON Gaming. Including additional info on GCDual, the original GCHD, and a first look at Insurrection's component cable!

    Thanks for this video! I was debating on getting an EON GCHD for months, but didn't want to spend $150 on one. But when you pointed out that Carby has identical output for half the price, I bought one immediately. It looks great! I think the dithering becomes more visible when turning off deflicker (deflicker was meant for 480i and blends together each scanline with its neighbor above and below, acting as vertical blur, disabling is commonly done by video mods which force 480p on games).

    When it comes to 300 level content, I don't think i'll ever be an 'A' student. The level of complexity and trade-offs at this level of scrutiny make it so there is no 'best' solution. I enjoy and appreciate this content and the detail it provides, but I'm probably only going to take the 20% that gets me 80% of the way there. Thanks for another great video guys. Look up photos of Phantasy Star Online Ep. 3 at E3 and you’ll see a GameCube hooked up to a mini LCD TV. That was the prototype 3D display, but they never activated or mentioned it.

    RE: Dithering -- People only give the Genesis shit when it comes to dithering. It's OK for other systems to dither, but not the Genesis! But I think that's just because people REALLY like to badmouth the Genesis for whatever reason. Makes them feel good and more secure I guess. The good news is that this attitude seems to be going away somewhat as people unclench their asses and enjoy games from all consoles as we all should!

      When I 1st noticed it on my GC games when I upgraded from composite to RGB, I thought my cable was broken, so I got a better one, I still had it.
      I bought component cable, then I got ossc, still THEIR. Then last thing toooo try upgraded to HDMI and it was still their.
      I love the game cube, but some games with dithering are soo bad for me I can not play them on the game cube without plugging in my composite cable or just playing them on dolpin.

    I had pretty huge differences between two Wii component cables I bought(the first one was like 7.99, so maybe that's to be excepted).
    With the current ones, tho, I don't see why you'd need anything more than a Wii. The picture is super sharp and you get the added benefits of running Wii custom firmware, which compared to a GC doesn't require any mods or extra hardware whatsoever. This is pretty important if you live in PAL land, where none of the games released even had official support for 480p.
    So yeah, I'd say go for a Wii unless you *really* need that extra 1% in picture quality(and remember to get good component cables for it, thick ones usual indicates quality in my experience).

    • @boomerkuwanger3700
      @boomerkuwanger3700 6 років тому +2

      I totally agree with what you say except one point: if you want the best GB/GBC/GBA picture quality through some sort of monitor, you only real two options* are either a GB Player with a component/HDMI/RGB solution or modding a GBA to output that way. To that end, a GC controller is substantially more comfortable for long-term play. Also, the chroma shift they mention in gcvideo 2.4a vs 2.4b is precisely most noticeable on 2D art for GB/GBC/GBA games.
      Having said that, throwing $75 just to get an improved image in GBA games isn't enough for me. GBI gives me enough options and flexibility to be a good enough solution for the time being. For GC games, I'd just go for a Wii/Wii U. Probably the most amazing thing to me looking at the videos is unless you magnify the video or are very close to the monitor in most circumstances even composite cable looks really good. I guess I'm more inclined to accept soft edges over jaggies on 3D art (and vice versa on 2D), so that's probably more a bias on my part.
      * I don't include emulation primarily because as awesome as it is, AFAIK we're not to the point of 100% fidelity and obviously this whole discussion is focused on that. If not, then yea, a Raspberry Pi 3 would be good enough in almost all circumstances.

    Honestly while all of this is great I think I'm just gonna stick to Nintendont on my Wii with Component cables to my HD tv. It can make most Pal Gamecube games that support 60hz run at 480p and if they can't the NTSC version most likely is. While all of this other stuff is great for people that can't dare to look at Gamecube games through the Wii's Component video I personally couldn't care less. At this point the only thing I'm missing is a PVM so I can guarantee a lag free experience for myself. Anyway great video as always! At this point you guys feel so professional to me that you could probably be put on TV and nobody would bat an eye. If you guys ever released a Blu-ray I would buy that in a heart beat!

      I'm pretty similarly-minded. Wii component 480p going through my trusty old XRGB-3 to a PC monitor looks like playing a damned arcade game to my eyes, even if it downsamples the color.
      Even with my Game Boy Player (the only reason I keep my cube), I just can't be bothered to go beyond S-video because thanks to GBI, I can output all of that stuff at 240p, and it just looks fine to me on S-vid.
      I still watch because I like the work that MLiG does and have an interest in these kinds of things (and a few friends with equal interest that may actually benefit from hardware upgrades like these... gift ideas lol).

    • @danieljimenez1989
      @danieljimenez1989 6 років тому +4

      A PVM isn't remotely needed for a lag-free experience. If a light gun works on your set, you have a lag-free crt. Most consumer 15khz crts are lag-free.

    • @licentioushowler3400
      @licentioushowler3400 6 років тому +1

      @@danieljimenez1989 I don't think the OP was under that impression about PVMs having less lag or whatever--just that he probably doesn't want to get a consumer tube if he's getting a tube at all. It was implied in the text ofc, but I'd be inclined to think that was a mistake first.
      Personally I think it's way too much hassle and nerdcore competition and just opted to use a consumer PC monitor instead, but to each their own.

    Man, I love how crazy and interesting all this new tech is, and yet I’m just using an RGB SCART cable on my CRT. Honestly, the quality difference is noticeable, definitely with a direct comparison and maybe kinda without it, but only when upscaled on an LCD. I bet you it’s damn near impossible to tell when sat on a sofa at the other end of the room when using a CRT, and I definitely can’t tell the difference. But even if I could tell, it’s far easier to just buy a Wii SCART cable for 20 quid and then just have it work, rather than buy £100-200 of cables and dongles and adaptors and then have to spend hours trying to configure it. (I’m a massive nerd though and would need to spend all year checking every option.) And worst of all, my CRT simply cannot handle 480p and is limited to 576i, so I can’t make use of any of this new stuff anyway.
    I expect that for now I’ll be sticking with my current hardware as 576i is my max resolution and hides any picture issues, but when I acquire a PVM-20L5 or some BVM model, I’ll probably be upgrading to a GCHD-MKII.

My Wii works for saving space since I can play both Gamecube and Wii games with my vast collection of VC and WiiWare games on one system. In the end, I love how all this will help more people be able to appreciate the Gamecube and what it could do visually. What I would really want to see is a plug in solution like this for the N64. I have an S-video cable to HDMI upscaler and it works very well on modern TVs but it would be nice to see an all in one HDMI solution specifically geared to the N64 that does not require you to mod the system. Keep up the great work and so glad I subscribed.

      [Try4ce] Sadly we didn't have one on hand, but as stated, RGB is a color space conversion for the GameCube (from YCbCr) so you could make the argument that component is more "accurate." However I thought the RGB looked excellent on the Mk-II, no real downside to that versus component. Also remember that the native RGB on the PAL systems cannot do 480p, only the digital connector can do that.

      I’d consider buying the actual component cables or monster cables, or alternatively the AR card/disc. Because there are several videos, forums, and post indicating these hdmi attachments fried peoples GameCube. Although they do work, there’s a specific chip that Ninentendo used to convert and upscale the image...these attachments were made to bypass that, and ultimately over work the cosnsole and dry the mother board.

      Depends on what systems your using. Any thing with av or component cables can be ran through most home theater systems. I use an old Yamaha AV receiver for all my games and it handles everything from the snes to the ps3 just fine. If your mostly using hdmi get a decent sound bar from bestbuy or walmart. Stick with brand names and you should be ok. If your trying this with a system like a nes that's just mono or uses coaxial cable I'd just use whatever speakers the TV your using for it has.

As a competitive Smash Melee player, some of these options get brought up a decent amount with the ongoing threat of the CRT apocalypse, and from what I've heard the GCHD is about as good as you can hope for with regards to latency, something heavily scrutinized in a game requiring frame perfect inputs.
