I agree, but I think I might be misunderstanding, but it feels like more of the hatred comes from the purists (real hardware or none at all) vs emulation in all forms, rather than software vs FPGA. It feels like, especially in the speedrunning community, there is a large amount of animosity towards any sort of emulation. FPGA or no. Which is a real shame. As these systems get older, they're going to get harder and harder to come across, so something really has to give.

    • @Trinigoth

I would like to disagree that there is hatred or animosity towards emulation from the speedrunning community. Emulation seems pretty accepted to start out if you want to learn a game and develop skill to get to the competitive level. At the high levels of speedrunning though it seems software emulation is just way too inconsistent to make things fair since each person could be competing on different emulators and hardware builds. I get that they could require you all play on a certain spec PC with a certain emulator but when it comes down to it playing on original hardware more or less eliminates that factor and ensures a fair display of skill. Just my two cents on it. @@TheDarkestPhoenix

Indeed, I prefer software emulation, you see, living in a small apartment, it's the thing that keeps my youth games and memories alive, but, no matter software or hardware, those games (and memories) must live on. For us, and for the ones who will come after us, so they can learn what good games were, back in the day. Memory preservation.

@@TheDarkestPhoenix a genesis is $20 and readily available almost anywhere in the US, so this doomsday scenario you paint of hardware being on the brink of extinction is laughable.
at the end of the day, it's an imperfect hardware emulation machine, that cost *more* than an RGB and Triple Bypass modded Model 1. that is a hard sell.

Oh man, I'm sorry. Should have got the MiSTer FPGA instead. It does way more consoles, also arcade cores, and computer cores as well, and it's Genesis core is more accurate than the Mega SG's core. Can change between Model 1 and Model 2 filters, and also change between the different YM chips.

@@jackbootshamangaming4541 I'm on the fence about this. Do I buy Analogue SG where I know it will work out of the box and play all my old Mega Drive games, or do I buy something I don't understand and will probably face frustration and disappointment trying to replicate, as I have had with every single emulation product I have ever tried? I have never got the hang of emulation there is too much faffing around involvded for the end result to work properly! How easy is it to setup and configure MiSTer FPGA? I find all this stuff so overly complicated.

@@rafaliciousbmx Bruh, if you can't set up a MiSTer, then you shouldn't even be using electronics. Misteraddons, and most other vendors, even send you a pre-flashed microSD card, so all you need to do is run the script that connects to the net, and then the one that updates it, called Update... If you have to set a card up yourself, you literally just download the image, use a USB mount tool, mount it, plug it in your DE-10 nano, let it install, then run the update script, which you select from it's On Screen Display with just a click of a few buttons. It's super Easy. If you really need help setting it up for some reason, I'm willing to upload a fully setup SD card that all you'd have to do is download the .rar/.7zip for and just unpack it onto your SD card. @@SilentShadow-ss5xp Except there is a lot to cover for the OG Xbox. There's a number of quirks to the system that many people are probably unaware of. For one, certain revisions of the system handle component video differently (later revisions break 480p on certain games like Panzer Dragoon Orta, Quantum Redshift, Gun Valkyrie, and the standalone disc of JSRF, just to name a few). Theres also the differences in hardware revisions that changed out parts like better disc drives and removing the notoriously leaky clock capacitor. Another issue is that not every game supports 480p as widely reported (Final Fight Streetwise to name one). There's also the issue of third party cables not being as robust as the first party cables. There's also RGB which is supported via an RCA converter for European systems. And let's not forget Xbox originals on the Xbone. That's quite a bit to cover for a video.
And of course, there's the copious modding the system is famous for, sone of which can fix the aforementioned broken component output on certain models.

This was a really outstanding video showcasing what to expect and more from the Mega SG. The speech at the end was especially great, although I see it didn't stop certain armchair experts from blindly hating on the SG and chiming in to show their "knowledge". To all the know-it-alls claiming that it's "cheaper" to simply get a Framemeister, put your money where your mouth is and actually show me and everyone else here where you can get a Framemeister for less than the cost of the Mega SG. I would love to see that so I can buy one. Not only that, but one must already OWN the console and the Powerbase converter to even come close to the value of the Mega SG. The Framemeister was discontinued in 2017 and is extremely expensive today, costing more than SEVERAL Mega SGs just to buy, and that doesn't go into the costs of modding your consoles for RGB to even make use of the thing (although thankfully this is not an issue with the Genesis/Mega Drive). The clones are simply a cheaper and less dedicated alternative to importing an expensive upscaler and having your consoles modded for RGB. Like some other comments have said, I for one am happy to see these alternatives. Many consoles and CRTs are dying out, making them harder to find in working condition. I'm happy to see there's alternatives and I'm glad the retro gaming community is so alive! This is all coming from someone who has never even bought a clone console.

The dithering consideration is an interesting case. It's nice that it has the option of blending them together for those who want it. Personally, I am of the mind that the dithering was primarily a result of the limitations of the system, and weren't utilized specifically to make use of composite blending but was more a case of implementing certain features as best as they could. Many other systems that used RGB or eve LCD screens (computers and hand-helds for example) used dithering to much the same effect to create shading or mimic half-toning and even though they too would "blend together" on composite output, they were not designed for it at all, so it doesn't seem to be a foregone conclusion that the Genesis graphics were.

Yet another awesome video, guys. So I have an aspect ratio related question in regards to 256 x 240 games (which actually only fill out 224 lines, just like the SNES)... in this video (at 16:52) you determined that an ideal width and height for non-integer scaling on a 1080p display was 1482 x 1150, which works out to an aspect ratio of approx. 1.289:1. You said this was based on the OSSC's generic 4:3 sizing. However, in your Analogue Super NT video (at 15:44) you determined the ideal to be 1365 x 1149, which works out to approx. 1.188:1, which was based on the aspect ratio of your Sony PVM-20L5. There's a bit of discrepancy here and I was curious as to which aspect ratio you would prefer to go by: either the OSSC's generic 4:3 definition or the PVM's produced aspect ratio.
I also noticed in the Super NT video that your PVM didn't appear to show any overscan; is this pretty easy to produce with PVMs in general?
    Thanks!

Holy crap, I thought the Super NT had a lot of options, but the Mega SG goes way beyond! I love all the different audio options, this is pretty outstanding. IMO, out of the box the Mega SG sounds better than the original Genesis (and there's a ton of variations with the original hardware, so I don't necessarily consider "authenticity" to be more desirable over something that sounds better), but I love that there's so much available to tweak. And again, it sounds great without tweaking so it's not absolutely necessary to do so.

I do think it looks weird attached to a Sega CD with the mouse pad looking spacer underneath. Was hoping for a more aesthetically pleasing look. Also was hoping for more coverage on the Sega CD when attached to the Mega SG. Like picture quality of Sega CD games running through the Mega SG's HDMI. I am not upset over the lack of 32x support because that is only 40 or so games and most of them I have checked are unappealing to me. If they do come up with a solution for 32x at some point, maybe a more pleasing looking addon for both 32x and Sega SG would be great.
Hoping there is a firmware updating for either the Mega SG or Mega Everdrive to eliminate the need to swap regions whenever I boot up another region's game. I wanna stay out of the menus as much as possible. An all around settings solution is what I hope to dial in the first time I boot the game up and never have to touch it again.

[Try4ce] That's what I've heard, it's less latency, yeah. And it also connects instantly, no seek time. Much more positive experience in my opinion over the Bluetooth versions. I intend to use it as my main Genesis controller going forward, whether on the real system or Mega Sg. I can't say the same for the other 8Bitdo Retro Receivers, which I like, but ultimately the little hassles have caused me to not use them much compared to my wired controllers.

The SMS games loses one vertical line of tiles in the left side of the screen in games who uses horizontal scrolling (vertical scrolling or static screen games don't loses this line of the screen). I don't know why this is happen.
In the otherside, almost all Codemasters games for SMS uses 248x224 of screen resolution against the standard 256x192, who gives four more tiles in the screen's height (Micro Machines, Cosmic Spacehead, Fantastic Dizzy and Excellent Dizzy Collection. Dinobasher is the only exception). I miss the screen tests with those games.

Wait, you can use the Mega Drive cartridge slot and Mega CD disc slot simultaneously!? WHAT THE HELL!? No way! That’s incredible! You could use the cartridge for gameplay and faster loading, but stream audio and even video from the CD! That’s super cool! Why did no one use that back in the 90’s!?

The best way to play mega drive games on a modern tv without question. Obvious the original model 1 on a crt will always be king in my eyes but this is easily the next best thing. The fact is it actual hardware and not emulation is a huge selling point and makes the gameplay and audio amazing

Excellent video as always. I agree that 480i is probably a low priority at this point, but many of us have fond memories of Sonic 2 split-screen. Personally I'd love to see a "bob"-type deinterlace added at some point to get rid of that ugly combing.
I'd also like to see if the audio could be tweaked to better mimic a Model 1. The examples in the video don't quite have that bass-heavy, rolled-off "grit." Of course, the community is still getting acquainted with all the unit's functions so it may take a while for someone to develop some well-defined profiles. I'm sure it'll come, I'm in no rush. :)

  • @martinfarinha

Received mine in the UK yesterday, up to now the only slight issue i have found is a low hiss from the headphone jack. Out of the box there was no start-up audio and Ultracore was missing, then I noticed a tiny sticker on the wrapping that said it needed an update and that solved that problem.
The one thing I would love to see would be future cart adapters for Atari 2600 and 7800 (not sure if 5200 is possible) along with a jail break update to run those systems, the controller ports are already Atari style so this shouldn't be a big issue.
What would be cool is if they made their own CD Rom drive add on that could play mega cd , Saturn and perhaps dreamcast all region free, it could be styled after the mk2 cd and attach side by side but use a front opening off the shelf drive from a reliable brand such as Samsung or LG to keep the cost down.

[Try4ce] Oh they did send us the systems to be clear (I say so early in the video), and we offered a lot of pre-release feedback as well (most of which was thankfully implemented through updates). But certainly we were under no obligation to give a positive review. This video passed no one's approval but our own.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  5 років тому +2

[Try4ce] Honestly I don't understand how we did it either. It was a real team effort. We had several weeks of experience with the system, but didn't start writing the script until 2 weeks ago today (when we learned the embargo was 2 weeks away). A head start with testing the console helped, but it's a miracle we pulled it together, especially when it ended up being twice as long as we imagined it would be.

I would really like to buy one these and a Super NT one day or just be able to use one, as I would still prefer to be able on a CRT. It kinda sucks that the NT Mini is discontinued. At least a lite version would be great but completely discontinuing it does not make any sense to me. Regardless, I still really like the idea of these FPGA consoles (which I like to call Hardware Simulators, as that is what they are doing). I can't wait to see the next episode of you guys.

About psycho-acoustics in audio comparisons : if you switch between A and B while both tracks are synced, any difference will be hard to detect. But if you restart A and B from the beginning every time you swap, the differences will be way easier to detect.
I don't know why, it's weird, but that's how the brain does. I suppose the effect can vary between people, but I confirmed this with everyone I tested.

I'm not sorry for purchasing good video cables and nice refurbished controllers for the original hardware, as I'm financially supporting a community of fans of old hardware. I've got a Model 1 still kicking, nice stabilised power supply, decent jailbar fix, c-sync, etc.. It feels good to keep old hardware in working order.
edit: HEY THERE'S A READ MORE LINK, CLICK IT
That said; the "against FPGA" argument is running dry. I think the purists are running out of things to complain about. This thing is soooo unbelievably close to the real thing, I bet the time for doubleblind testing is very near. In the long run, having a compact and luggable setup is vastly more desirable than supporting 'going 40' hardware with leaky caps, frayed cables, old controllers, dodgy power supplies, etc. Reconfigurability and upgradability of fpga's make it one of the most versatile methods of "soft soldering" together a working system.
tldr; There is room for OG hardware as well as modern products like these, as long as they are well-developed, which this is. Kevtris is a goddamn rockstar. Singlehandedly delivering a product that not only tries to match the original hardware, but pays homage to it, improves upon it, and futureproofs the system for a couple of "monitor tech"-generations to come, while at the same time literally obliterating the market for cheap clones. You get an Analogue product, you know you're set for life.

  • @SchmingyYT

Hey I have the Mega SG set to boot to the menu. If I select Run Cartridge, Genesis games run exactly as expected; Master System and Game Gear games apply the Genesis profile settings. If I re-enter the menu using the hotkeys after the game has booted, and select Run Cartridge again, then the Mega SG applies the appropriate core settings I’ve entered. For the Master System, the scaling is slightly different and I have the crop settings turned on to get rid of that large overscan border the Master System used. For the Game Gear, I have a 7x scale set, so it’s pretty apparent when the Mega SG boots with the Genesis profile of settings. If I go into the menu after booting the Master System or Game Gear and look at the settings, I do not have a Core Settings selection available unless I restart the game by selecting Run Cartridge again.
Also, if I go into the menu after selecting Run Cartridge the first time, all the settings I can see are those I set for the Genesis when I configured that yesterday morning after I installed the 4.7 firmware. After going into the menu for a GG or MS game, and hitting Run Cartridge a second time, the game shows the right settings, plus if I go into the menu again, the core settings option is available as are the specific settings in video and audio for the given system type.

Regarding the tip at 40:00 to unplug the MegaCD, be aware that if you do this there will be a significant voltage drop on the base unit. This is enough to cause the MegaEverdrive X3 to fail to POST on my Mark 1 Genesis, for example. The severity will depend on your console version and power supply but I would not recommend this, as you'll be stressing the power supply of the base unit.

Since the release of the DAC, I think that my favorite way to enjoy them both is pretty much exclusively on my Sony WEGA CRT. 5 years later, if Analogue kept offering these consoles, they would definitely make bank, but they seem to like the Nintendo method for hating money.

You should reconsider how you present sound comparisons. Several key sounds have been recorded in the two versions, but appear only in the video on one version.
The example around 32:24 is a good example of this. Just pausing one video while the other is demoed, then switching it around would help a ton.

    Woohoo Virtua Racing!
Right now my Framemeister and SCART cable to either my Sega CDX or Genesis M1/CD M2/32x works extremely well with my 4K Visio TV. The Mega Sg would probably be a bit more convenient and less cables though. But for me I think my purchasing decision would be based more on the adapters to play the other Sega systems, since I have no issue with my current setup with real hardware. Plus I also have a MiSTer. :) Of course, the options for both video and audio on the Mega Sg is quite impressive. Tweaking things with the Framemeister is kind of a pain to me.
