This is a huge step forward for scalers. The retro community is so blessed to have people like Mike. Thank you for your hard work as well, Coury and Try!
I've been eagerly awaiting this episode and was not disappointed. It looks amazing, especiallys how it handles 480i. Hopefully I'll be able to afford once soon, I absolutely need this. Thank you for this video!
I own a 5X and a 2X Multiformat. Mainly I play Tony Hawk Pro Skater (all If them) and Burnout on a PS2. I actually find that the Multiformat produces a smoother, more appealing image. The one exception I’ve found is with Burnout Revenge outputting 480p.
For anyone who might be wondering what's at 11:26 - that's an NES game called Legacy of the Wizard / Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family, 14:20 is PC-Engine's Dragon Egg, and 17:40 is Breath of Fire II for SNES, 18:03 is Mega Drive's Magical Taruruuto-kun, 20:48 is SaGa Frontier 2 for Playstation, 21:17 is Valkyrie no Densetsu (I'm assuming running from Playstation's Namco Museum, but could also be PC-Engine), 24:06 is Playstation 2's Odin Sphere! I swear, everytime I go into one of these, I end up going down a million gaming rabbit holes...
Pulled the trigger on these and it arrived the other day. Even connected with my crappy Amazon composite cables on the SNES it makes a world of difference. Now I'm just waiting on the gComp, and component cables from HD Retrovision for SNES, Wii and Dreamcast to be available! This channel is really great. I had an itch that needing scratching bit wasn't sure what it was until a few months ago when I stumbled on a MLiG video while watching another video.
Wow that instant switching is huge I've been waiting years for a "perfect" solution. I may try to get one of these purely for that. Glad to see more of these products other than ossc and framemeister coming to the market.
I want someone to release an updated video on the 5X now that the firmware is basically finished. It's crazy how much it's changed since initial release.
hot dang that is a nice solution that i might just have to pick up. great video again guys its crazy how excited i get when you guys upload its like chirstmas each time.
Try's enthusiasm is so, so funny. I love it haha. Excellent overview, so detailed, guys! I l would love to get the RetroTink 5x for PS2 now.. man --- and the PS1 480i problem!
With the introduction of the Retrotink 5X, the entire Retrotink line has become my go-to recommendation whenever people ask me about scalers. The Retrotink 2X was always an easy recommendation because there wasn't anything to worry about as a plug-and-play device. The best thing about the 5X (outside of miraculously fixing the Chrono Cross problem) is that, for all of the power it has, it too remains plug-and-play for most people and for most consoles. Personally, the only reason I still have to keep an OSSC hooked up is that it handles PSP video out for me and can scale it to a much larger size on the screen, so that would be the only feature I could request in an update.
[Try4ce] Yep, the 2X stuff is such an easy recommendation for people who are new to this, especially for N64 fans or people who don't want to deal with mods or pay for the best cables. At the very least they're getting WAY better composite than their TV would show, and no added lag. No matter what future devices may offer, the 5X too will remain an easy recommendation for people who are just looking for the results, which it delivers in spades. I think it's a very very smart product.
Just got the Retrotink 5x in. Already had an OSSC. Went to town on it for hours and was up until 1am trying a bunch of games PS1, PS2, and SNES. Love the CRT filters. I wasn't sure if it would be worth it, already owning an OSSC, but I'm loving it. IMO, the killer feature is how well it handles composite video, ease of use, and the amount of CRT filters and post processing effects with the latest updates. Taking a soft, analog composite signal, upscaled 6x to 1440p, then overlaying a super sharp, pixel accurate scanlines with a CRT mask on top of that is *chef's kiss*, IMO. It's fantastic for getting a really convincing old-school CRT look. I may even like it better than super sharp RGB. Cleans up video noise on pre-rendered videos on ps1, ps2 games. Also love how the scanlines and CRT filters scale and correct accurately based on the input signal 240p, 480i, etc. So with scanlines turned on, while playing chrono-cross for instance, going into the menu, the scanlines and CRT filters seamlessly switch to being more dense and pixel accurate to retain the 640x480i detail. Then seamlessly switch back to the fat 240p scanlines when going back out of the menu. All with no signal drop, if using triple buffering. Even without Triple buffer, it's close to perfect, with only a split second audio drop. It's crazy good. I think in some cases, the OSSC can still give a sharper picture, using FirebrandXs profiles. But the Retrotink gets really close with the timing presets. They aren't perfect though and I've had occasional issues and I've had to fallback to the generic 4:3. But the OSSC can be a pain too sometimes. The Motion Adaptive De-interlacing is awesome for PS2 and way better than the OSSC. I'd gotten used to Bob and learned to accept it, but now that I have this, I can't go back to that jitter. Overall super happy with the purchase. Think about selling my Sony PVM, which I've mostly kept for interlaced PS2 games nowadays. The retrotink 5x is very well worth it!
For PS1 can you simply use the regular Composite output? (yellow, white, red). Or its recommended to get some RGB -SCART cable? I know the regular Component output does not work for PS1 (the 5 cables, RGB + audio)
Yours channel was revelation to me otherwise never will heard for these products and such a deep technical analysis. Only wanted to play GT4 in Full HD but now must have that 5X. ;)
Truly a watershed moment in gaming history. An unbelievable video - maybe mlig's best. Made with such care and dedication. Thank you Coury and Try and thank you Mike Chi for creating the 5X.
[Try4ce] I'm really happy with it! It was a great price for what is offered. I'm kind of debating getting another one or two for my editing setup, since my 1080p ultrawide is the same horizontal resolution... so it would actually be an upgrade for editing too... but maybe I should look into what has the best color reproduction for that. But I bet I'd be happy with the same $250 monitor for that too, honestly.
Awesome content as always! One suggestion I'd like to make is adding a little card which tells what game is on screen. Small detail, maybe a hassle but just a thought. Cheers.
Despite having this product and having watched Bob’s and Scarlet Sprites’s videos three times each already, I knew I’d love this. Great job, boys. This might be the best video yet!
@@MrDayday4641 it’s definitely 0 lag, or as close to it as possible. RetroRGB’s videos on the Tink show that frame lock mode introduces a fraction of a frame of lag, and buffered mode wavers between .2 and 1.2 frames.

As someone who is not an expert, but enjoy retrogames and like to occasionally play when time permits, this is the video that I was waiting for on the 5x. Been waiting for this episode because I _knew_ you guys would have the info I needed about SNES compatibility. Looks like I'm saving up for another new piece of kit! :)
Who in the world is downvoting super high quality content like this?! Great video guys, I thought I was perfectly happy with my OSSC, but each review I see that sings the praises of this device makes me think I am mistaken!
[Try4ce] Well, as we say in the video, you should definitely be happy with your OSSC! It's as good today as it was yesterday! The appeal of the 5X is definitely in having 240p + 480i handled equally well in one device, though!
Other than the mistaken belief that videogaming was born in 1985 (And thus no coverage of say the Atari 2600 through this), very good video. I didn't learn anything I hadn't already known about (As a close follower of this product in recent months), but it was great none the less to see confirmation that Mike Chi indeed had fully delivered here as expected.
[Try4ce] Heh, sorry, we aren't really too into Atari, I have to admit. I don't have an RGB mod or composite mod for any of those systems either, so you'd have to route the RF through a VCR or something.
Wow, the optimised sampling mode looks incredible but on the OSSC that sounds like an incredible pain, I definitely wouldn’t bother with that. With the RetroTink 5x, maybe I would. But I’d probably also stick with the generic 4:3 because it just works on everything and looks great, you’re totally right that unless super zoomed in the difference is basically unnoticeable, I know it would be for me as my vision is terrible.
This video convinced me to get a 5X Pro, and after a day of messing with it I am SO glad I picked one up. I am a diehard CRT enthusiast, but I can't argue with results...with the proper settings and cables, this thing makes some of these games look DAMN good on a modern display... Now I'm looking into the best possible cable output options for all of my unmodded consoles. Got expensive QUICK!
I've been in the market for a new scaler ever since I picked up a CRT monitor that has BNC connections and supports up to 2048x1536 resolution. (1920x1440 here I come) But now that I hear about the Pixel FX Morph and it having VGA on board I'll have to wait a little longer to see. Keep up the outstanding work!
Seeing that CRT Simulate is very fascinating, I had an idea for something similar to that years ago when I first saw Bob deinterlacing on your channel. It’s a shame if causes retention and stuff though.
I absolutely love my ossc but the Retrotink 5x's deinterlacing modes and the presence of s-video are the reasons I'll probably be wanting that over my ossc. The exclusion of vga is a bit of a letdown for Dreamcast owners like me, but the already mentioned scart solution and hopefully future component solutions will make this a non-issue. It also makes it so that I don't need the Koryuu transcoder anymore. The 5x would basically be replacing three different devices in my setup LOL.
This is a perfect video for the launch 5X but there are so many new features that have been added that it really needs to be updated. The thing If you thought the it had an amazing set of features in this review, boy oh boy it's so much better now.
I was skeptic at first since I had my Framemeister, but this is really convincing me. Maybe it's time to ditch the Framemeister and get the Retrotink 5X.
@@wrena79 The only benefit of value to me for this over my Framemeister is the 240p to 480p switching (which makes some games unplayable for me with the framemeister, such as Killer Instinct Gold on N64) - I’m gonna stick with mine though and not bother with this as the lack of HDMI inputs will prevent my Dreamcast and Gamecube from being connected using HDMI; the Framemeister does have some let-downs IMO but it still does a great job on the whole
Great video, although I do have to say I'm a teensie weeny bit disappointed that there was no dedicated 480i consoles section. I'm really into getting the best out of the PS2. But it's just a small thing, this is THE definitive video overview of the RT5x. Thanks guys!
[Try4ce] Did you miss this part? ua-cam.com/video/FvFzcn8NCb4/v-deo.html Deinterlacing is definitely one of the unit's most important features, especially for PS2! I felt like we showed quite a lot of 480i stuff from that, PS1, and Saturn! There's even a bit of 3DO stuff later.
@@mylifeingaming Oh no, I watched this part of course, and I ever finally learned why people dislike Bob so much (bob deinterlacing, bob from retroRGB is awesome) It's just that I'm a hungry little fellow who maybe wantes just a bit more :P But nevermind me, it's just that I'm kinda fixated on 480i PS2 content, and I definitely got a lot here today
[Try4ce] Well I'm definitely happy to have a perfect PS2 solution integrated into my setup now so I'm excited to play even more PS2 stuff! It's an incredible console, one of my favorites to buy games for still!

if you could list the games shown in every video in the description box, it would be even more amazing.
id love to see more of the og xbox on this device!
Got expensive QUICK!
we are on the same boat, just ordered my HD retrovision cables and gamecube prism component cables.
Incredible work once again, my dudes.
That is one sexy piece of kit!
What game is featured at 9:23 in the video? You guys always do such a great job that I’m always watching your old videos as well as new ones.
Sky Gunner
Seeing that CRT Simulate is very fascinating, I had an idea for something similar to that years ago when I first saw Bob deinterlacing on your channel. It’s a shame if causes retention and stuff though.
Great insight into the 5x - thanks.
As someone with a 1440p monitor.. this looks amazing
As someone with a decent 1440p pc monitor and a 4K oled, I will be picking this up when the next orders open up.
Great video! This helped me decide to look into a RetroTINK 5X.
Will the next one be a RetroTInk 9x (2160p) ?
Yes.
Though, it's not RT9X, it's just RT4K.
This is a perfect video for the launch 5X but there are so many new features that have been added that it really needs to be updated. The thing If you thought the it had an amazing set of features in this review, boy oh boy it's so much better now.
Will be interesting when the VGA to scart adapter cones out :-)
I just want to say how excited I was to see dragon quest 6 featured! One of my all time favorite and overlooked titles.
Now I just want to play Chrono Cross again
Very comprehensive video. If this was an rpg I imagine I’d gain plus 5 to MIND stat.
The instant switching of resolutions is the best part. Silent Hill 1 is finally playable again outside of PS3/PSP emulation.
Wasn't expecting to see Rainbow Mika at 240p but here I am.
The Framemeister easily still looks the best 4:35, 36:44. Much more pleasing colors and scaling.
I just bought one. I'll be using it for ps2, ps1 via ps2, wii, and gamecube via wii on a small samsung LED. Can't wait!
I was skeptic at first since I had my Framemeister, but this is really convincing me. Maybe it's time to ditch the Framemeister and get the Retrotink 5X.
I have a framemeister too and on the fence as to what to do!!?

@@mylifeingaming Oh no, I watched this part of course, and I ever finally learned why people dislike Bob so much (bob deinterlacing, bob from retroRGB is awesome)
It's just that I'm a hungry little fellow who maybe wantes just a bit more :P
But nevermind me, it's just that I'm kinda fixated on 480i PS2 content, and I definitely got a lot here today
[Try4ce] Well I'm definitely happy to have a perfect PS2 solution integrated into my setup now so I'm excited to play even more PS2 stuff! It's an incredible console, one of my favorites to buy games for still!
Here's a really great review of the 5X Pro that features mostly the PS2 by a guy named Adam Koralik ua-cam.com/video/xJYiZMbY8p8/v-deo.html
