Nintendo GameCube HDMI Adapters have been out for a while now. Earlier this year we saw some releases including the EON GCHD. While it was a great product it was considered expensive at $150 USD. EON have listened to their customers and annouced the GCHD MKII which has many new features all for the same price of $150 USD. But is it any good? Is it worth the cost over some of the cheaper gcvideo alternatives? Lets find out !

Awesome review on this, my guy. I picked up the original earlier this year, although it looked nice I wish it did have more for the $150 price tag. This looks to be everything people were asking for and more at the same price, I'd definitely nab this model if I didn't already have one on hand.

Last week I had to make a review video about RecalBox on a new SBC. The RockPi4B. I had never played N64, PSP, NES, SNES, ...
I actually did not enjoy playing all those games. Only games I'm used playing are racing games. All the others I truly didn't know what I had to do. My video will be online by the end of the week. I've got to wait until RecalBox is released.
My favorite game was F1 Championship on the N64. PSP also worked great on the RockPi4B, I was amazed by that.

I bought the GCHD-MK2 when I was rebuilding my console collection and chose it over the Carby for two reasons, neither being the price: Feature list and that it looked like a more professional product to me. Having the Wii RCA/Component as an option as well as having an optical audio jack were things that the Carby just didn't have when I was shopping around.

If the Carby has the same performance as this adapter, $75 sounds like a fair price. But $150 for the EON seems excessive. At that point, you’re better off just spending the extra $50 on the official component cables, and still getting superior image quality with it.

Well id assume most ppl arent going to stream their games. I get that ppl need to be rewarded for their work making this stuff, but 150 dollars to most ppl is not worth it. They really need to keep this stuff in the $20-30 ballpark, saving some of those added features and bigger price tags for the streamers who need it.

The funny thing is they didnt do any of the work. The gcvideo software used by these hdmi adapters is open source, anyone can use it. Eon simply made their own but had the nerve to charge $150 for theirs as if they are having to recoup the cost of developement. Their second adapter (also $150) rips off the Mike Chi's retrotink2x line of of products, which arent open source. Going so far as to scratch off the chip labels and cover them in epoxy in an effort to hide it.

It's cheaper to get a launch day wii and an hdmi adapter for the wii than to buy just this gamecube adapter. As an added bonus, you don't need to change discs on the wii.
I have all sort of nastalgia for the gamecube console, but given that the wii has improved the user experience so much (no need to change discs when playing backups) I don't see the need for the actual console itself.

For me, a big charm of vintage gaming is the price. I still have a NES with light gun, 10 games and a game-genie for $15 at a yard sale, but I wouldn't pick one up these days because they are ridiculously expensive.
Same goes for this gamecube adapter. $150 for a hdmi output adapter makes no sense to me, especially since you still need to have a gamecube. At this price, just get a Wii instead.
Vintage gaming at posh prices makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

This is for the people who want better quality than the Wii, but don't want to shell out $250+ for the component cables. There is a difference in quality between the Wii component cables and the GC cables (the GC looks better).
I wouldn't pay $150 for this, but at $50 it starts to become a more reasonable buy.

I noticed some audio delay on the Metroid Prime 2 segment of the video. Is audio delay persistent with the HDMI adapter?
Also, shoutouts to using the Analogue Super NT/Mega SG HDMI cable there.

Yes, I noticed the delay too. This & the Carby have an audio delay that is really annoying. Not sure why no reviews or comments mention it? I got around it by using the Carby & plugging the composite audio connections into a soundbar & used the Carby for video, though for the price of these I wish it just worked.

I got my component cable for my GameCube a couple years ago when it was $200. Now they're going for $350 or more, probably because gaming hardware is in demand because of COVID. Anyway, this setup will probably be worth $1000 in another few decades.

Seems like a stellar offering and great upgrade from the original for streaming. I will say the Carby is the better buy IMO if you just want to hook up the gamecube via HDMI to a modern TV for sure. I will say this and could be youtube or my monitor, but the official component cables seemed to have more detail vs the HDMI when done side by side. Now to be fair it is very minuet, and you would have to be really trying to split hairs. I would say for the absolute best picture go for the official component cables if money is no big deal and your not worried about TV's no longer having component hook ups. However, for damn near the same thing, less money, and somewhat future proof hook up (compared to component cables) the modern GCHD or Carby are the way to go hands down, and to be honest the slight detail increase in the component cables don't justify the price or lack of future ease of access for me at least.

    • @NotMoreZombies
      @NotMoreZombies 5 років тому +11

You can probably get better video quality in Dolphin, if you've got a beefy GPU you can pump up the internal resolution, apply texture filtering, antialiasing and even install HD texture packs.
Still love my real GC though, somehow emulators always have enough little problems with them to put me off.

Honestly, I think emulation is the future. Because you can upscale like crazy. I can upscale on my PC to 8k easy with gamecube. Which is dope. My phone (sony xperia 1 mark 2) can upscale to 4k. and its got a 4k screen. so it looks GREAT. (note I physically own the console and games I emulate, so its legal)
Side note, we have the progressive cables.... two actually. one for each console (i had a gamecube and my brother got his own gamecube. my mother had learned by then we both need our own console because we both want to play at the same time lol)
