Floetrol vs. Water 😊 An Acrylic Pour Experiment. Let's see what happens! Here I am trying to make two identical paintings, the only catch is that I used different fluid paint mixing recipes. One is mixed with Acrylic paint and water, the other with Acrylic Paint, water and 1/4 Floetrol. See what happens for yourself! Oh and how you see the paintings at the end, they dried exactly the same how I left them 😊.

FlowerRemedy same super relaxing
Me too!!
I really like both but water is free... LOL! on a budget!!
Haha.
LOL... Exactly!

@@NosActivated420 its free at my house...come out of my well.
@@NosActivated420 so true. Right now my water is added in my rent, but its still expensive.
Floetrol is about 80% water. It also has some acrylic polymer (which is why it will form a film) and some flow agents which are really what makes it create cells a bit better than water alone. The cells form from differences in paint pigment density which is why you get them when you put the white over the colors since the white pigment basically weighs more than the less dense colored pigments. The flow agents (including silicone) help the lighter pigments flow to the surface while the heavier pigments tend to head towards the bottom. Floetrol and silicone are not necessary because the instability of the different densities is the ultimate cause of cells... not the flow agents. But they do help and accelerate the cell formation. So I use Floetrol in my fluid acrylics if I want cells. Note that if you have heavy pigments UNDER the lighter ones, neither Floetrol or silicone will generate cells. The heavy pigments are already where they want to go.
Anyhoo love your paintings and technique. And of course your lovely smile!
Thx for the explanation about the cells creations💖
Good to know the science behind the cells. Thanks for showing us this but how do we tell a heavy pigment from a lighter one.?
@@ritageorge2348 specific gravity of the pigments. Water is the standard at 1.0. Mars Black is 4.6. Titanium white is 3.9. 4 x heavier than water. Dioxazine Purple is 1.44.

Great information! Thank you!
I like the water better. I think the metallic just needed to be blown out a little. I could identify with the water as it being an Iris, where the flotrol looks more outer-spacey. Both are beautiful and have an audience.
Christy H agree, both are very nice.
Christy H I also agree.
Very nice job Rinske, thank you, Pam
I do think the water one looked more like a water colour. Each has its charm.
I recently ( few days ago) started practicing this art form. I have to say it's kind of pricy, but if you do your research enough I found out that 1000ml of paint is around 15 20 dollars so If I buy only the base colors like black , white , yellow and red and blue with 50 ml of gold, I can mix my colors and since we need water in it it makes it last longer . I also recently learned ( but gonna test it in a few days) that you can practice this on photo or aquarelle paper as well wich is much cheaper than a canvas .:) Im addicted to this way of painting I spent 9 hours last night practicing and altough I never got to the part where I get these eautiful shades Im sure Im gonna get it right one of these days. Thank you for teaching me so much, your an amazing teacher
I thought the same when i first started out about buying just the base colours and making my own, turns out you can't really do that with pour paintings. There are heaps of beautiful colours that cannot be made up. Also you need good quality paints to get the best results.
I'll try photo paper for my practice. Thank you for the information
Hola, estoy empezando a practicar pero no le se la dilución exacta y me queda duro como espedo
Perdón me queda como espeso.
You can practice on old/used/unwanted CD and DVD discs
I usually take both Floetrol and a bit of water. Using only floetrol makes paint a bit heavy and thick (in my opinion). But I also use your method (only whater and paint), all versions give beautiful results. And forgot to say: Rinske, I am your big fan, thank you a lot for the inspiration you give! :)
Love the water one better! I'm not a really big fan of some of the larger cells or a lot of cells, so for me the one with the water is just beautiful! Thank you for demonstrating the difference.💜
I first landed here because of art, but then, it's always Rinske's beautiful soul that drags me back .... artist soul and body, bless you!
From my research, the Floetrol has a better chance of lasting long term. If you mix in too much water, you have a better chance of getting cracking and peeling over the long term (unless you seal it with a top coat). Something to keep in mind... never mix more than 30% water with your paint! Both of them are lovely, but I agree: I like the one with Floetrol more. Great job! 😁👍
Thank you for demonstrating what the differences are. To me both are beautiful
Well done, Rinske. The Floetrol is definitely better with more cells. I use a 50/50 mixture of Floetrol and Elmer's glue + a few drops of silicone oil. You are a good teacher. Thanks.
I'm new to fluid art so I really appreciate you doing this experiment. I'm a huge fan and just tried two paintings using just water like you and adored the results, but have also used floetrol as well as liquitex. As for your results, they're both lovely!
It’s like looking into the universe. Both are wonderful with their own story to tell.
My sweet Miss Rinske. Lovely experiment. I use Floetrol to get longer life out of my paints. And I agree with you of the 2 I also like the lacing/cell effect with the the floetrol one better. I have learned so much from not only you but all the wonderful fluid pour artists on You Tube !! Thank you for all the information that you share. Much gratitude ! Cyndy from Sacramento CA
I really like both. Good to know you save a bit of money mixing with water and still get a professional look.
I really like using the Floetrol better. Thank you for sharing side-by-side
Cool experiment. One’s almost tempted to just use the water to cut down the cost, but I’m like you, I definitely see the difference the FloTrol makes. Thanks for sharing
I think you need to experiment more! Tiny differences can make such a huge impact in this art. Thank you for the comparison though! I love things like this! Both paintings are stunning as usual but yes I like the floetrol one a bit better too.
What a fun experiment! Love both paintings. But I agree with the one with flotrol being the more pretty of the two. Im a huge fan of lacing, and it goes so well with Dutch pours. ♡
What is your ratio of water with paint? Do you ever use acrylic in tubes or are all your base paints a fluid type that pour from the container, rather than being squeezed from the container/tube? I absolutely love all of you work. You as a person is pure entertainment! Such beautiful work.....I'm now going to try it.
What a lovely person. Nice experiment. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your experiments. I enjoy watching them. I do like the water one in this instance. It looks great
They are both equally beautiful because you have the special touch my friend!! Everything you do is beautiful and I appreciate you so much thank you for helping me in my healing journey!! Sending you all light and love!!😘❤❤
So excited I worked out my paint was to thick to move nicely I finally did one that's worth keeping yay😀
Floetrol is known for creating cells.
Both pours are pretty and colorful, but I lean more toward the water only Dutch Pour technique.
Hi Rinske, I Always wondered what the difference was. I'm going to have a go myself now. I was waiting to get Flotrol, now I'll go ahead without. Thank you.
Hard call, as in my view both are exquisite and have their own appeal. I could watch your tutorials and videos all day Rinske
I just wanna know who is clicking thumbs down 👎 on all the Fluid Painting videos? I'd give this video 2 👍👍 if I could...
I live stream a game that I play and there is always one thumbs down after only a few minutes into the stream. Are they clicking that because they don't like the video or they don't like the streamer? I call them an unfavorable name and you know it is the same person all the time.
Andrew Fowler I call it jealousy you think ✌🇦🇺
@@HayDayPhoebe Jup, think so too! I have a couple of those as well... but it's really bad for a new channel with only a couple of subscribers. Bleh!
Funny , I never notice the hands down before ...some people have nasty streaks and would "hands down " their own mother..sad , unhappy people do these things ...they actually have no love , even for themselves..just feel sorry for such people.
People who don't appreciate the art or artists, I guess, Andrew Fowler.
Hard to pick, both are gorgeous. I always use Floetrol premixed so it’s easier than mixing up paint with water each time. The Floetrol one appeals more because of the cells. Thanks for your wonderful contribution to my heart & soul ⭐️⭐️⭐️♥️♥️♥️👏👏👏
Both are beautiful!!! I do like the water only mix (colors look more vibrant & less cells)... Thank you for sharing!! ❤️
Both lovely. I think it's just a personal favorite, whether you like the extra cells. Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent.
I’d love to see this experiment done using floetrol also in the white for the canvas made using floetrol mixed colors. What do u think? Thx for the demo!
Linda Dummitt AGREED The white needs have the same weight/viscosity as the color for this to be a true comparison. Water only in the white may still win out, but I’d really like to see side by side
I'm new to pour painting so I apologize in advance if my questions seem dumb, but here goes:
1). Do you always need to put pour white paint over the surface of the canvas before adding any colors?
2). Did the paint with Floetrol also have water added?
3). Why didn't she add Floetrol to the white paint?
4). I've seen people use equal parts Floetrol & Elmer's "Glue-All" to make a "pouring medium" but I didn't notice or hear her say anything about glue, so is glue not necessary? If not, does anyone know the purpose of using vs
not using glue?
5). Are there different types of Floetrol or is Floetrol just Floetrol? What does the torch do?
6) What is the best "budget" paint to use?
7). Did she use silicone oil?
Thank you again, in advance, for your time answering my questions. As au mentioned, I have just started learning about pour painting any other advice you can pass along would be greatly appreciated. 😊
@@lisamays7818 You need to watch some beginner videos. Too many questions for one vid!
Both are very beautiful. For me, economically wise the water is better.
Pretty. I don’t think it’s possible to make two paintings look exactly alike but you got as close as any I’ve ever seen.👏👏👏👏👏
I have tried a lot of the techniques and recipes for paint, but it seems that water works best. Both of your paintings look great.
I just think you are so refreshing to listen to and learn from. Your personality and your work is tops.
I've done it both ways , also and I use a spray bottle of water to expand the colors sometime after I've blown the paints ...occasionally I have cracking , not often ...ijust count them as. Interesting texture and go on.
I personally love the cracking. I find it that it adds depth and feels like a tree. Hehehe. Looks fantastic with tree ring pours.
I prefer Floetrol. Very pretty Rinske!
I like the Floetrol. Thanks for the experiment!
Both are beautiful but I like the water one. Brilliant colours
I like using Floetrol and the painting you did using it better too!
Thank you for the demonstration and sharing your time. I prefer water. Each time I’ve purchased flotrol, I’ve had a mess using a stocking to filter the lumps. It’s not worth the frustration to get the lumps out. Your paintings are always beautiful.
Pam Kreisman Use a wire mesh strainer, much less messier & easy clean up.🥰
I’d like to see you experiment with a lot more Floetrol. I either use just water or paint and Floetrol 2:1, with the Floetrol being the most. At least you never get lumps with Floetrol, but the just water is special too.
Thanks for doing this video - I'm a beginner and appreciate your videos.
Thanks for being objective in your experiment. I learned a lot. Will require further trials, but a great start. Thanks again! Two beautiful pieces!
Water pretty with floetrol prettier. Thank you for that experiment 👍🏽
I think they look amazing as a pair.
Both are lovely paintings but if I can get out of using Floetrol as well as silicone and have a 'natural' painting then I prefer just water and acrylic paint. It's good to know that Floetrol doesn't detract from dutch pour, just in case you use left over paints with Floetrol in them, but it's just so expensive in Australia that I resent paying $56 for it when I know people overseas pay $15 for the same quantity. Thank you for being open to experimenting, Rinske.
Raelene Gavin $57 will get you 4 litres at bunnings.
I get you, unfotunately quite a few of mine with water have cracked!😣Annoying that Floetrol is made in Aus too!!
close as can be, lol..and funny thing is ya know if a person tried to get two to match, using the exact same mix, they wont...lol.. really enjoying your pure water dutch pours, got here after seeing your blindfold challenge done by an artist ive subbed for almost two years... pretty cool. bravo, you're touching many lives..i appreciate nice people :)
They are both beautiful, however, I prefer acrylic pours with lots of cells and lacing, it adds more character I think! Water is good for beginners because as we know art supplies are kind of expensive.. great experiment. You are a wonderful artist. You give us all so much to think about and inspiration to try different methods. TFS
They both turned out beautifully!
They're both beautiful!!! Love your experiments! 💙💜💙
I use floetrol for all my colors, even the background. It tends to mix better with the colors on top. I think for the long haul floetrol will help the colors stay true and fade less than just using water. However, I could be wrong about that. I love floetrol and have found that the colors aren't muted at all. Both of yours turned out really beautiful! Thanks for doing the side-by-side comparison!
May i ask you: Do you only use floetrol or also a little bit of water in de colors to make it thinner?
@@JuutjeParapluutje2283 I only use floetrol. Only on rare occasions do I use water. When I do use water I use only distilled. I much prefer the texture of the paint when using floetrol. I just don't have great luck with water.
Try adding a splash of GAC 800
Hi, Rinske. I like the water version. If you look on how the paint ran, the Floetrol seemed less runny, the surface had more mounts. On the other hand, the paint with water ran smoothly even to the sides. Floetrol May have produced more effect, but I prefer water. In fact, I am currently in the "water only" mix phase. I used to mix with Elmer's glue all because there is no Floetrol in Panamá, but I switched to water only and am loving the results. 😉
The floetrol one did not flow as much because floetrol is thick. Maybe if the density have the one with floetrol was watered down a little bit more it may flood more. Who knows more experiments in the future I guess
Hi Gabriela. It's been 2 years since this comment. Can you tell me if your art cracked like everyone mentions using water and acrylic paints? I'm just starting now and dont have any budget for expensive floetrol. Also which paints do you use and the ratio of water and paint mixture
@@heenaqadir5338 Hi, Heena. The paintings remain perfect. I can't assure the ratio because all products are different and require custom formulae. Paint and water has worked very Well for me. 😉
They both are so pretty.
Thank you for sharing this with us!
I love the water! It is more fluid and delicate looking. The floterol results in too many cells and makes a piece look too busy. Water for the win!!!
With Floetrol for sure! Try to put 2 drops of silicone to see if you like the result. I made the tests too and I love with silicone oil. 😘
Mel Gama silicone will give cells however if you want to apply a clear coat of resin after, it’s problematic (not impossible) to wash the silicone off. The resin will “pit & dimple) if it’s not cleaned.
@@ivonnemistudio9433 How do you clean off the silicone without damaging the painting?
@@stephaniemitchell8509 gently a little dawn and warm water i was told. I haven't tried it yet as i don't use silicone.
love your art work without floetrol more ☺️ your pictures are unique and clear! Nobody makes it as beautiful as you! 😍
dont like bigger cells because they brings too much restlessness ☺️
Agreed!!💯‼‼‼‼‼❤
Merci pour la démonstration et les explications.☺
Great job on this comparison Rinske. Fabulous paintings! 💙 Look foward to your next experiment, and as always, your next painting!

You get to the point!🎉👍🏼👏🏼 and perhaps, because your method is very simple, it's easy to understand! They are both beautiful, I think I like the one with floetral better
Both are beautiful. But I prefer the one with the Floetrol. Love your demonstration.
Skimming over your videos between painting ...always learning.
Both are lovely 😍 Would like to see how the paint with water dries. I have tried this before and found that when it dries it doesn't dry level, but some of the paints leave "dents" or pit marks....
Thank you for sharing your beautiful work. 👌🏻
This was the best explain video so far thank you
And again, you're the best!!!
You are a science lady as well as a artist.
Hi Rinske! I know you've already said you don't use measurements to turn your acrylics into fluid, you check that the consistency is falling off your stirring stick. I was wondering however how you determined the 1/4 floetrol for your floetrol mix. For example, if your paint and water was mixed to the right consistency and weighed say 40 grams, would you then add 10 grams of floetrol into your already complete mix? Or would that thin out the paint mixture too much?
If you, or anyone, in the comments section can figure out what I'm trying to ask, I'd love some help figuring out the floetrol mix!
Thanks a bunch :)
I like them both too
My heart pops out wen I see so much Color dripping down 😮😮😲😲😲😲
I have been using Floetrol and watching your experiment I’m thinking the Floetrol may be giving my D. Pours to much elasticity. All my colors seem to pull back towards the middle when I’m finished. Thanks so much Rinske.
I agree with you I’ve noticed that the paint pulls back toward the middle. I’m so glad you mentioned this. I keep blowing it over the edge.
Hi I follow Molly and she mentions you and your paintings I love it and the colors! I agree love more with the floetrol!
Love them both
It will be interesting to see what they look like when they are dry!
Rinske, I like both paintings, but the one with floetrol, is better due to the reactions with your paints. ❤️🌈🌟🥰💥👍
They are both gorgeous !! Thank you for sharing the difference of water and floetrol very interesting 😊
Great experiment! I do like the floetrol one best 😀 You are so pretty! You are like the Nigella Lawson of acrylic painting lol 😀💜🐨
Great experiment, Rinske! I like the Floetrol one a lot better because of the cells and webbing.
They are both beautiful!! As a general rule, Floetrol will lighten the color but the colors will dry to their original intended vibrant colors, as floetrol drys clear. Floetrol also does tend to make some cells.
I like both as they are lovely but i like your artistique way of speaking english & i just love to listen to you with that beautiful smile 😁 merci Mam
Great experiment. I liked the floetrol one. They were both beautiful. I agree with Katiewelborn about the elasticity. I thought I was just imagining it. I’m going to try with just water I my wind up preferring it. Thanks for sharing
I get amazing cells with Floetrol in flip cups!
Wonderful practical experiment, you are always great to watch!
Love your methods and teaching techniques.
I always use floetrol and water to help get it to the consitency i want without using too much of either one. Thank you for the videos. I've never done a dutch pour before but I'll have to try it! Yours always come out so beautiful ❤

Amazing Rinske! I tested out thinning my paints today after many fails. Haha! No wonder, I was making it too thick. I like how Flotrol makes the bottom layer of white I use lay smooth and flat, looks like white glass. You're the best, I've binge watched your videos trying to do it like you do. Thinning it was the key. Thank you sweet lady, you're a wonderful teacher. #Grateful 🙋✝️♥️🇺🇲🌻
Hey gina!! Ohh thats so great!! Yes it is fairly thin. I have tried this week a colander pour (not video) but i couldnt believe how thick the paint needed to be. But when you got it right, you wont forget and can get used to the substance. Haha if im making sense. Well wanna wish you hapoy holidays and enjoy creating!
@@RinskeDouna aw, you're such a sweet lady! You make sense dear. I think reverse dips, and half cup pours and tilts need to be thicker or they make a thin puddle in the middle.
