Claire thank you so much for doing this experiment, it took a lot of time and effort on your part and is really appreciated. As you rightly said, art is very personal and for Dutch Pours I prefer just the water BUT with really good quality paint. Rinske Douna is a master at these pours and only uses either Windsor & Newton or Amsterdam paints. Her dutch pours are gorgeous, really etherial but not really celled. It was incredible to see how your results differed with the different products. Thank you.

The cells form with just water because a lot of cell creation is based in the density of the paints (and the addition of oil such as silicone or oily pm). I hope that’s useful to others, it’s certainly helped me since I learned about this x

Are you a pour paint artist also?
I just discovered Acrylic Pouring on 6/7/22 and I've already done 7 pour Paintings and posted 4 videos on my Channel!
The first 2 were actually tempera paint pours because that's all I had.
The next one was with Acrylic craft paints.
The next one (6/12/22) was what I consider to be my first official one, because it was done with "real" Acrylic Paints and it turned out beautifully if I do say so myself! Lol
      Happy Pouring!!

I’m in Australia and have easy access to the floetrol but am discovering that the cells can be a bit much. From your video, the water and paint combo looked the most vivid in terms of colour purity with the US floetrol adding a bit of extra interest.

@@Angie-zx8ft One suggestion you might try is to decide to splurge on the Aussie Floetrol, but order it from an American supplier (PixelPaintDesigns) so you don't have to pay as much for shipping. THEN.... rather than using the Aussie Floetrol as your pouring medium, try putting just an ounce or so into a shallow plastic lid (think yogurt cup lid, for example) and then, if appropriate for your style of painting, dipping a strip of acetate into it, and use that acetate as a swipe across your paint.. amazing cells result. Learned this from watching Priscilla Batzell of Expressionist Art Studio.

Each painting has its pros and cons. It's really in the eye of the beholder. What effect you are going for. So many flow artists copy each other and don't experiment or try to be creative on their own. The flow art technique can be used in other ways, such as for florals and landscapes. Even abstracts. Don't copy everything you see, find a way to use the flow acrylics in other kinds of art. Great tutorial on using the different products, thanks!

Apparently Aussie Floetrol has some sort of oil in it. Cathleen at CozCreations was talking about that in her latest video, how she had trouble varnishing a painting where she had used it. She also showed us her cup of paint with the Aussie Floetrol in it, and it had an oily film over the top. Just an FYI. That's why you're seeing an uneven surface. Aussie Floetrol comes into its own in the Shelley Bloom technique : )

It may have had some silicone oil in the cup too. Silicone leaves oil on top of a dried painting. I clean mine before I varnish with a good rub with a paper towel. Most pourers will clean with baby wipes or mild soapy rag, then dry off with a paper towel. We all have our own ways of cleaning the up to varnish or resin.

Thank you for showing this. I've never used the UK and US floetrol and despite everyone saying the Aussie floetrol is the best, I thought they're all pretty much the same. Watching this has now shown me. I'm in Australia, so it's all I use. I only use the glue and water mix for the base coat on the canvas. I find that Amsterdam paint with Aussie floetrol gives the best cell activation doing swipes. I'm glad you like our floetrol. I feel for anyone buying it overseas because they pay a lot more for it.

I think you should consider painting the canvases with one or two coats of paint prior to pouring so the texture of the canvas does not intrude so much on your otherwise lovely designs. Perhaps let the first coat fully dry, then the second coat can be wet or dry prior to the pouring. This hides a lot of spots that might also be bare under your design. Worth the time. Thanks

Thank you Claire, you have saved me a lot of time and work and also convinced me that I do need to use a pouring medium for some projects and not just water. Like you I like the way the colours react and spread, if that’s the correct term, with just water.
I am pretty new to all this and finding out new things all the time, like in a couple of sea/beach pours I have just done, I got cells and lacing with the white (Amsterdam Titanium white) over iridescent colours, not so much over the plain colours. All the paints were mixed with a pouring medium (1parts Owatrol to 2 parts water) - 1 part paint to 1 part pouring medium and then water if needed to get the right consistency. I’m very happy with them and luckily we have holiday accommodation, my experiments will grace their walls! And hopefully some will sell!😜

However, what this demonstrates is that it really is all about personal preference. Thankyou for spending your time showing us what each medium can do - side by side I can now see that I'm not that keen on the multi cell look, and instead if I were to invest in any, it would be the American, closely followed by the British.

Hi, Barbara in Germany here. Super tutorial s, beautiful pics. 👌🏼Lots of questions... I'm newly interested in pouring. How long are you doing this already, how long does it take to get some good results not just a mess 🤔? How did you start out? How many types of pouring are there? What do you do with left over paint? How important is the blow torch? Is it to fix the paint or for effects? Is it dangerous?
How long does it take to dry before hanging on the wall, especially for bigger pics? Is there a finishing process? We're you very frustrated often with results?Oh, & is this paint easy removable?
I just viewed your Floetrol comparisons... Good to know. 👍🏼
What kind of prices in £ are you selling for? Im guessing the pics get a very positive response, they look super😊 I paint Acrylic paintings so have some experience in art but want to try something completely new😉

Many cells appearing truly has much to do with how you layer opaque/translucent/metallics as well. I loved this video because there can be so many confusing things to remember. I was unfortunately getting cells with Elmer's pva glue, Elmer's reg. school glue, just water, or American floetrol. I've also tried most (90%) pouring mediums and still I get cells.ugh. I tried thickening and thinning the paints, still cells. Now my brain HAS to figure things out when 2+2 doesn't equal 4, so I figured it out with the help of a couple videos with more depth on the science behind the density and layering of translucent and opaque paints. Still getting little cells, so it comes down to which paints you use-especially types of black. Certain brands create more cells and using satin black or white with other matte paints will create cells. It's a never-ending, enjoyment of learning. Thank you for your videos my dear, if you have any ideas for no cells, please do a video for us. Much love from Canada ❤

Very interesting. I actually quite liked the pva one except the big blue blob in the middle and I think that might have been better if you’d added a white line or the gold on last. I also really like the negative space stuff and the impact the contrasts create though too. Really informative video though. Thank you 🙏🏻

Thank you for this fascinating demo and experiment.
Thinking maybe one more test... add more PVA to your own mixture to thicken the medium...
Also simply loving the affect of the gold in the water version... wondering how one could add that type of golden sheen affect to a favoured medium pour eg the American or UK pour...
    🤔

Floetrol & PVA glue dull the colors a little. If you put a Gloss medium or varnish when you mix then you should keep the shine. Or when you varnish or resin the painting the shine will comeback.

Excellent job. Australian floetrol is oil based, gives cells. American floetrol is latex based, no cells, needs silicone oil.

I have to say YAY for the USA Floetrol. 🙂 I'm in the US so that's all I have access to, but to have you say that you like it best, was amazing. I shouldn't say that it's all I have access to, because there are other types and brands of pouring mediums, but I like the Floetrol the best. I personally don't like an overwhelming amount of cells, and I'm not crazy about super large ones either. I think the big cells take away from the composition of a painting, and to many small cells seem to hide the paint, or push it out of the way. Thank you for this awesome demonstration. It was the best one I've seen, and I've watched many, and tried many as well. I Love your work, and have tried a few of your ideas, without much success, but then I'm pretty new to pouring. Eventually I'll get there, and I hope I can create masterpieces like yours someday. 🙂 God Bless, and Happy Pouring.

iyes it is very nice, just way too expensive. Why they charge so much, who knows. I rather just do what many do by adding some additives to the American flo.. and get about the same results than pay that high price. I still get good results.

But, most people who use American Flood Floetrol mix it with the paint, water, AND a tiny bit of silicone. The Flood is for the movement, not for the cells. The silicone is for the cells.

I totally agree with you on all fronts! Lots of cells with the aussie one, but I really love the UK one because I love how it almost looks like light dancing in a pool of water. The American one was also nice with the flow!
You are also noticing the same thing with Metallics that I did! I just use water with them because I love the shimmer and intensity ❤

Loved your comparison of the different profiles and the glue and the water I really liked the two first ones the UK and the US but it also really like the Australian and I use water in most of my pours and depending on my paint mixtures and their thickness and their pigment value I can get cellss and lacing . I also use glue and water and it's okay but I prefer between the two the water only and I'm going to try polyacrylic and liquitex medium next thanks what you did help me a lot as well

I congratulate you on your work. I use elmers glue Australian floetrol, water and cheap acrylic paint. I am very pleased with my work. I guess you had a dimensioning mistake in your application and mixture preparation. Your Duch technique is wrong in my opinion, you should cover up your top layer paint to your floor paint and bring the colors from the inside out. Thank you for preparing and sharing your video.
