In my opinion, I think Jonas wrote Varg like that in the movie to give the middle finger to the real Varg Vikernes. I love the actors who played Dead and Faust. Those two stood out to me more than the rest.

@@flonkplonk1649 You forgot who Jonas is. It's not like movie was made by someone like Ben Stiller. It was always cringe (not part with murders/suicide ) but whole shtick about dress code and certain ridiculous rules set by some edgy overlord who was dealing with napoleon complex, were indeed cringe. Mayhem (besides Attila who don't give a fuck and knows when to be diplomatic) were always about the image of deranged and dangerous satanists . Or BM mafia like someone said (varg or fenriz, I dunno). Every documentary on this topic was done in a serious tone, nobody's story matched which resulted in constant debates and mystique which perfectly blended in their idea of cult band with fucked up background (it is). But who were these people who made Mayhem's cult status (euronymous, Dead & varg )? Basement dwelling nerds, all 3 of them. Jonas didn't mocked their music (you're all missing that) costume department was more than legit, having edgy nerdy teenagers and their bizzare antics depicted as cringe gatekeeping nerds is more accurate than official story. That didn't sit well with band and their fans because it made them look less dangerous or fucked up than they really were/are. If there's something that BM musicians and their fans hate, that's being ridiculed for their culture. Many bands who were hanging with Mayhem on daily basis or some foreign bands who met them while touring were mocking some of Mayhem's antics. Abbath, Satyricon, Deicide etc didn't find Mayhem's shenanigans scary or dangerous, they found it cringe. Music aside, crimes aside, everything besides that was cringe. Their early spandex era was cringe, their demo was hilariously cringe, Euronymous was cringe, and when someone as Abbath himself finds you cringe, then you are cringe. The movie is dark where it needed to be dark and it was funny where it needed to be funny. Since there is no 100% accurate truth about Mayhem's adventures in early 90's, I think that this movie could be the most accurate thing about this topic and that makes butthurt fans even more cringe. So, yeah, movie does have heavy dose of cringe because main characters were indeed cringe dudes like it or not.

My most embarrassing moment was when I was with my ex, she lived just outside Bergen, Norway & I was over there for 1 month to see her as I live in the UK. Her daughter was being being dropped off from the babysitter & I had a few drinks, I made a comment about Varg's antics at Fantoft Stave as it was in the middle of January, Norway is COLD at that time of the year & I made a joke about warming the place up like Varg did. The lady gave me a weird look which I took to be she was shocked an English man knew about what happened, it turned out she used to work for TV 2 Direkte & it was her Husband who filmed the famous clip of Varg going into Court back in the 1990's.
They were also VERY Religious & were very strict Christian.
Before the week was over it had gone around the Town the English guy was into Black Metal & was a "fan" of Varg etc, I laughed so much. I have NO TIME for the views Varg has, I think he may be on the autism spectrum disorder to say the least BUT his music is amazing, Hvis lyset tar oss & Belus are amazing albums & are the best form of Norwegian Black Metal.

I agree that the girlfriend and the redemption of Euronymous were fiction and only there for plot purposes and otherwise uncalled for, and those were the weakest points of the movie. But the cringe moments you discussed were not a writing mistake but very intentional, meant to portray the protagonists as the edgy teens/early 20year-olds they were (and which most of us were at that age, let's face it). I enjoyed the dark comedy of this movie very much. Great writing (with the exceptions I mentioned) and excellent directing.

Nice review Boris. Thank you. I have not watched it yet. Perhaps never as it seems to be sensationalized. When Black Metal started, I remember most of us musician rocker type guys were big fans Iron Maiden, Metallica and Slayer ect. Anything new and different was interesting. I listened to second wave Black Metal bands and was intrigued to hear more, but it wasn't even close to being as mean and tight as Slayer's masterpiece "Reign in Blood." Then as time went on, we learned that Slayer were influenced by punk and second wave of British Heavy Metal (and Venom who are British, influenced by punk and First Wave Black Metal.) Who knew? LOL. The third wave of Black Metal really became a different beast. A lot of the the goats and pentagrams became secondary to epic songs, scenic nature and intense melodies. Which Bathory perfected after Quorthon honed in on his Viking Metal style. Then Windir put out their Sognametal style. "Likferd" is my personal favorite. Lo and behold if it wasn't influenced by Varg/Burzum. So what is my point? It's all twisted up like an old fishing net. They are all part of the story of Black Metal like it or not.

I believe the movie would have been better if they would have stuck more accurately to the actual history instead of fabricating some kind of "redemption arc" for Euronymous. It just don't believe Euronymous would have felt that way at this point of his life. He might eventually have if he lived to become older and more mature, but when he died he was still so young and radical.
I actually kinda liked the more comedic bits especially in the first part of the movie. Why? Because in my opinion it shows how freaking young they still were. How it all started out quite silly and funny and later on turned really, really dark. Or atleast I always interpreted it that way.
I didn't mind Varg Vikernes being protraied as an absolute douche and loser. Because in my eyes he's exactly that - an absolute douche and loser, as much as I respect what he did as a musician - as a human he's really a dumpster fire.
What I absolutely loved about that movie was the imagery and music, how that all came beautifully together and gives the watcher a glimpse of the absolutely unique atmosphere in those circles back then.

Well said & well reviewed. I love black metal and I have the movie on blu-ray and really like it. The biggest reason is the amazing detailed nostalgia and atmosphere. It is like a time machine. I absolutely agree with you that it should have been in Norwegian, with English subtitles. That really was a missed opportunity there, and it would have given the film a whole different feeling.
I have been into the black metal scene for over 30 years, and was active in it when the events of 1993 took place, and I would like to thank you for your videos, especially the tours you did for the locations of Varg's apartment and where the murder took place.
    BUT
I would like to point out that church burning and graveyard desecration also happened here in the UK, with PAUL TIMMS being found guilty of arson and going to prison, too.
What is also interesting is that he came from the same town as Dani Filth and Diamanda aka Stupia, the owner of misanthropy records.
Although the events here in the UK were not country wide news, it did make the media and was reported on by kerrang magazine.
Once again, Boris, thank you for an amazing channel and keep up the good work.
Also, I am a published author on demonology, Black Magick, and the occult, and I would like to send you signed copies of my books for you to read and review, please let me know if this is something you would be intrested in doing.

A highlight that I didn't expect to even be in the movie was The Host of Seraphim by Dead Can Dance. That song has been used in a bunch of films like Baraka and The Mist, it makes every scene so much more sombre and emotional. I'm so glad that Lisa Gerrard and Dead Can Dance gave the creators the rights to use that song. Musically, it's the perfect contrast against the black metal tracks while still sounding like it belongs in a film about black metal.

I think they were definitely more than simply “crazy adolescent children”. Not just because Euronymous was 25 years old when killed and Varg was 20 (so actually well into adulthood) but because they created some of the greatest music ever made in metal, taking atmosphere and meaning far beyond mere garage rock. This is an aspect that I think the movie underplayed, leading to conclusions about the scene like the one you are drawing here.

However, it brought back those times to me, the early 90s feeling that I lived through. I'd just left the military, was growing my hair, learning the drums and playing in a band with my other ex army mates, and that's what the film brought to me. The feeling of that time.

  • @HowardLovecraft1936
    @HowardLovecraft1936 4 місяці тому +5

I agree with the sentiment in this video. What I think was missing from the film was the fact that the music that Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor et al were making in the early 90s was utterly astounding. Like the perfect storm of talent, will and an understanding of atmosphere. That’s far beyond the capability of simple edge-lord kids just wanting to rebel (also people seem to forget that Euronymous was 25 when he died and Varg was 20, so hardly children). The impact and quality of the music was secondary in the film but I think it needed to be on an equal footing to the drama. That might help non-metal people understand that it was in fact about more than simple teenage rebellion. It was about incredible art, too. Also the poor casting choices removed pretty much most of the evident charisma that Euro and Varg must have had back then. Neither strike me as leaders in the film. Culkin was a frightened child and the guy who played Varg was a chubby dork. Hard to replicate (the Motley Crüe movie failed massively in this aspect too). Early 90s Norwegian black metal isn’t just garage rock with murder.

They needed to make a film similar to “Metalhead” (2013) about the mood; especially with that cold, blue-ish color scheme.

I really enjoy this film too, man. For me it actually blurs at least two distinct genres - the Rock Bio, and Classic Teensploitation, the latter being a type of film that isn't really explored very often any more. Overall I agree with most of the positives/negatives you already pointed out so I won't belabour those here beyond the biggest one which is my gripe that it should have been done in Norwegian with Norwegian actors. As you said, that would have shifted the entire tone and texture of the project dramatically. There also should have been more actual Black Metal in the soundtrack since that is what the focal point of the whole story is supposed to revolve around. At the end of the day though, there is much to enjoy about it and it's strangely both better and worse simultaneously than one might expect if that makes any sense. Definitely one I can rewatch at least once a year. Would love to see a different director attempt the story again one day. Time will tell.
If you want to see some similar, and arguably much better films that both attempt to tackle the same sort of 'Teen Nihilism Run Amok' theme in very different ways, try The Rivers Edge from I think, 1985/86 with a young Keanu Reeves, and the classic 1979 Matt Dillon effort Over the Edge.

In the meantime I will just stick with the documentaries like Until The Light Takes Us, that and the actual live footage from back then, to give me that "first discovery" feeling. Someone who doesn't over romanticize it with Hollywood pretty boys for the Twilight crowd (similar to what they did with the Germs movie What We Do Is Secret, with teenage girls suddenly becoming big Germs fans because they are in love with Shane West). But also doesn't take the "everything sucked in the BM scene" attitude that Varg seems to exude constantly. Just show people who they really were.

I agree that the movie could and should have had a much darker, more serious tone, and it would have been a much better movie if that had been done. However, I also like the movie very much as it is, because metalheads just tend to be kind of goofy, and it's possible that the guys starting black metal were also kind of goofy as well as completely messed up (they were teenagers after all, they probably were kind of cringe at least once in a while). Also I think the weirdly comedic tone fits in a way to my personal discovery of black metal, when I was around 14 and cringe as hell myself. It makes sense somehow, in a strange way, to me at least.
