- We catch up with director Jonas Åkerlund and actors Rory Culkin, Jack Kilmer, Anthony De La Torre, Valter Skarsgård, Lucian Charles Collier, Wilson Gonzalez, and Sky Ferreira before the World Premiere of 'Lords of Chaos' at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
Based on the novel Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind, director Jonas Åkerlund returns to the big screen to adapt his long-time passion project. 'Lords of Chaos' tells the real-life story of the birth of the Norwegian band Mayhem who would go on to create a new genre of unrepentant music called “black metal.” In its wake, Mayhem also inspired uncontrollable chaos in a wave of death and destruction.

I felt sad that the wig he had was so fake looking. Compare the pictures of Pelle back in the day to Kilmer's portrayal, the wig looks dull and dirty.

When Varg created all the media exposure with the burning of churches, Euronymous got very upset with him but not because he was jealous, he was afraid that Black Metal would attract too much attention and become something mainstream.

Jack Kilmer is an amazing actor considering how he portrayed Pelle, so please, stop being so hateful. I've been into black metal since I was 13, (for 12 year now). I know the movie is "based on lies" but it doesn't give you the right to be rude to these actors. I've seen comments filled with hate and frustration and I don't get it. YOU would've been casted if you could do it better, so shut up please. I truly think that Jack Kilmer is very talented and he did a great job playing Pelle! I can't even imagine someone else doing it better than him. I've been obsessed with Dead, so I know what I'm talking about. Be nicer, people! :)
At this point no one can seperate lies and legend from fact anyway. I was one of about 12 people in the US that even knew who these bands were in the early 90's. I can recall that some of the things accepted as fact when all of this went down are considered complete bullshit today. Besides that, It's not a fucking documentary. It's a dramatization based on actual events. So was Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Ed Gein didn't live in Texas. To our knowledge he never used a chainsaw on anyone. The scene at the begining where graves had been desecrated and Leatherface's mask are about the only details resembling the story of Gein. Lords of Chaos got more "facts "right than it did wrong.
@@user-bq2xc2fl6l Exactly. If you talked to people who were part of the scene at the time, you'd hear so many conflicting stories and opinions you wouldn't know what was what or who to believe. Some of the people involved have a different perspective on events that's come with age and no longer view things the same way they did when they were interviewed about them 20 years ago. And if you use Varg as a source you can't believe anything he says anyway.

I first came to know about the scene when the LoC book was released back in the late 90s. There were so many interesting characters involved in the black metal scene at that time. When I first saw the previews for the movie, I groaned thinking it looked bad.
Mostly, the movie didn’t let me down in that regard, lol. I didn’t feel anything for any of the characters, except for Jack Kilmer as “Dead.” His portrayal felt genuine and was, to me, the best part of the movie.
Dead was a really mysterious and very VERY tortured soul. Any of us who love black metal know this. He poured his soul into the lyrics and performing, but he was someone who did not enjoy life. Kilmer did a good job as Pelle I think. He made it easier to feel sorry for and empathize with Dead

I'm gonna contradict everybody who hates this movie, I think Jonas Åkerlund was on to something by focusing on how teenagers in groups can become monsters to each other and others. I like that he took a step back and really tried to convey how ridiculous they were. I don't think he succeeded in everything he set out to do, though. I missed at bit more depth to some of the other characters and it didn't feel like it was a movie about a group of boys when I really think it should have been. The only characters I remember were Øystein, Varg and Pelle. Everybody else just faded into the background and then suddenly one of them kills a guy kinda out of nowhere and you never get to experience that boy's journey from regular teen, to killer to dealing with the consequences. I think if the movie had decided to make the group the main character instead of making it all about Øystein, then it would have been a much more interesting analysis of what happens when teenagers go too far.
I think the most interesting thing about this film is how controversial it is and I almost enjoy reading comments and watch rant videos more than I enjoyed the movie.
IKR according to the credits Occultus and Fenriz were in the movie. Like wtf where? I don't recall Fenriz or Occultus being in the movie at all.
How very impressive, they have managed to memorize Freezing Moon, Mayhem, and Burzum from the movie. God forbid you guys might have done some research on bands like Darkthrone, Bathory, Venom, Emperor, Tormentor, etc.
Jack Kilmer is about saying to us "Even though I look like a privileged rich Hollywood brat,and still a poser to black metal, I am still hip with my skulls on my tie.

Yes he was in the movie. Honestly, i didn't even see him either the first time i saw the movie. He is the one who runs around in the background, screaming Hail Satan randomly without any context what so ever (as if that was the only thing he did)

I've never seen a cast so genuinely disconnected from and univested in the people and the story of the people who they are playing ... perhaps its because they realised that the true story was so different from the film that theres almost nothing you can say .... jack was probably the best but sadly Pelle gets very little screen time
Most films are like this now. Films are simply content to be consumed. . In 2015 I stopped watching altogether.

The makers of "Lords of Chaos" are liars. Darkthrone, Burzum, & Mayhem disapproved of both the book and movie so much that they refused to have their music featured.
