I'm a woman in her mid-50s who got into black metal just a few years ago. I got a job as an album reviewer. At the time they needed someone to review the black metal albums they kept getting sent. I was a metalhead, but knew nothing about black metal. Honestly, I was intimidated by the scene because it was so angry and so dark. Nonetheless, I took it as a challenge so I started reviewing a genre I knew little about. I ended up loving black metal. There's a primordial quality to it that just works. 🤘
It's so cool that you kept your mind and heart open for new music ❤ I'm 33 now and have always been a metalhead too. As a teenager I had quite a dark phase and just scratched the surface of black metal, but turned to metalcore then. Today I am discovering the universe of black metal and the deeper I dive, the more I start to love it. To me it's something you need to give a try without any bias, to be able to discover its quality and depht.
I got into it later. Im 49 now so probably in my mid 20s. Well I really got into it. I was all about Doom and thrash. I did have the Bathory album when I was 17. Right now im hardcore into Viking/Celtic metal. I love it.
Almost 40 here, and just got into it pretty deeply a couple years ago thanks to my good friend Hoot. I've always been into death metal and in death metal bands. It's a nice change of pace.
I don't flex much. But sometimes i wonder do i have mental problems considering how i much i like those nasty Underground one man projects. I haunts other people.
I've been throught some of his videos and the crazy thing is, that's how he judges ALL music fans: as if they don't like or hate music because of how it sounds, but because they want to flex to the outside world, or want to feel like part of some group. He did an entire video arguing that people hate nu metal "because they hate its fans and the media said bad things about nu metal". No dude, I don't like nu metal because I think it sounds bad. That's it.

@@gixxusmetalman7435 there are plenty of genres that don't play on the radio though so that isn't a reason to specifically listen to black metal, second wave black metal has the same rebellious spirit towards death metal that punk had towards contemporary rock and role. Unfortunately Black metal ultimately fell victim to the reality of music and genre categorisation which is musical conventions and tropes so black metal bands aren't exactly unique which is one of the complaints they had towards death metal.
Being a lady in the USA and not having any metalhead friends, I didn’t know black metal existed until I got my first iPod years ago… It’s like I’ve always heard this music in my head.. I’m so thankful black metal found me and I haven’t stopped listening since… I embrace the darkness… the music feels like my insides…
That's exactly how I felt the first time I heard doom metal, it was like, where have you been all my life? I was introduced to black metal by a friend in high school though and loved it ever since, it's the only music you can truly relate to when you're totally dead inside.

The most emotional and definitely most "true music" to my ears. Like oldskool grandpas listen to Mozart and Bach and enjoy it to the fullest, I listen to BM in the same way.
I think my only issue with the video is that it assumes that black metal is listened to mainly to capitalize on its image, and not because people like how it sounds. It’s interesting to me how to some people describe the music as sounding like nails on a chalkboard and others describe it as beautiful. Don’t get me wrong I love the aesthetics of the genre, and the occult themes but I’d never force myself to listen to music unless I genuinely liked it.
I think I remember when I disliked the black metal sound. To be honest I tend to like "better produced" music but suddenly the sound just made sense to me.
One of the big things that people that are not informed of the scene don’t think about the American and Brazilian, and Canadian scenes of black metal that were before and around the same time, bands like sarcafago, blasphemy, and profanatica
I'm norwegian and grew up with Dimmu Borgir and Satyricon as my main bands in my youth. Been on and off black metal through the 2000's, but now it's my main shit again, by far, with doom and sludge. I would say that black metal has never been better and more creative and fresh as it is these days. I got *counting*... 42 BM bands that have put out music between 2018 and now, that I have in my rotation and they range from more old school to modern, atmospheric black metal. It's the purest form of emotion and musically it has this genuine and creative vibe that few other genres have these days. Most importantly; black metal anno 2024 is as far from boring as it could be. Edit: Fuck, you're the guy behind Tryglav?! Fuckin' awesome. Eller. I grew up with Old school death metal and Black Metal in the 90’s ! For me both genres where very important and I still enjoy them today!! Great content Boris !
For me, black metal is more of a feeling than a sound, if that makes sense? As a genre it's raw yet beautiful, It's Dark yet enlightening, It's unintelligible yet understanable. Theres a gravitation towards it because the genre is extremely different in comparison to so many other genres of music, even within the metal scene. Black Metal contnuously flips its head as to what you make of it. The sub genres of black metal combine with other genres and themes, such as folk music, medieval themes, symphonic and melodic, Atmospheric and Ambient. Theres a strange beauty to it.

Being a BM artist or musician myself, I personally enjoy the DIY aesthetic to the genre and the raw counterculture quality it presents itself with. But again, not everything is meant for everyone.

I more or less agree almost with everything, but the guy in the original video forgot to mention very important fact that accompanies black metal almost from the beginning - a reference to our original pre-christian cultures and paganism and the resulting opposition to christianity and other authoritarian religions. Of course, not all black metal bands are like that, but it is a fundamental fact that is inextricably linked to black metal. A lot of people who return to their roots do so through black metal as well.
I don't know much about BM, but it's interesting people focus on one apparent guy who murdered someone(?) when rappers, especially trap, LITERALLY brag about real life murders in their music. Multiple rappers are proven serial killers.
I argue that Cradle of Filth is technically Black Metal at the core, it's just a bit cleaner and melodic. The Demo Spattered in Feces and the first 2 albums certainly should be considered Black Metal.
Been really getting into Black Metal over the year and im very greatful it exists. Music isn't one thing it simply happens and will always be here. Call it good or bad it doesnt matter people wanted to make it and they made it.

Yeah, Ive watched one of his vids, I remember stopping before it ended and being like never again....black metal is interesting to me for a gut full of reasons, one particular thing about it is how one must have a sense of humor.
It's pretty funny how he trashes black metal for having a gatekeeper mentality, meanwhile he's involved with a music scene that's notorious for turning against bands that slightly change up their sound (e.g. see how the punk scene reacted to Black Flag's "My War" and TSOL's "Beneath the Shadows")
I think that part of the appeal in the early days (for me the late 80s and early 90s) was that you had to work to find your way into it. You could buy a Morbid Angel album in pretty much any music store. Black Metal felt like you'd found a secret door into something a bit hidden and exciting. You'd eagerly hunt for tapes and faded photocopies of fanzines. Weirdly, part of the appeal was that pretty much everyone...even people who listened to death metal...HATED it. Black metal was the darkest corner of the basement of the metal scene.
Man, I loved the excitement of finding new bands randomly. I don't know how much money I threw at bands I didn't know anything about besides the genre they were playing. I consider myself lucky to have been able to experience what waiting in front of a store felt like. Damn, I miss those times.

I laugh now, but I bought the first Impaled Nazarene album (on vinyl...I'm that old) pretty much because I thought the band name was cool and Finland seemed even more like a place for crazy guys in the woods than Norway. It took weeks to arrive and, when I got it, I played it again and again all day. My friends who liked heavy music thought it was just 'shitty noise' but, to my ears, it's was exhilarating and almost unsettling. Like smelling salts for the ears.
Black Metal was not and never was the darkest corner of the metal scene, in most cases. It was the most DRAMATIC, when it comes to both sound and aesthetics. Death Metal takes the cake of darkness, but by a mile. The sound is a lot more powerful, cold, , without emo-melancholic moments, and you have songs speaking about people being brutally murdered, tortured or r*ped. Even identifying the Human Race in general as an inferior species lol. And there are also Satanic Death Metal bands, like Deicide and Vader, whose lyrics are extremely and explicitly violent regarding how they praise Jesus choking to death on his blood, and smashing the face of Jewish God, etc. If your concept of "Darkness" is being mellow, dramatic and melancholic, there's a ton load of bands and artists outside Metal in general, which do it in a more deep manner than most Black Metal.
@@HeathenDance I respect your view. I am just saying what it sounded like to me as a rural 16 year old English kid back in the early 90s. Back then...to me...Death metal was becoming pretty generic. Most of it was in the two sound camps of Sunlight Studios (Entombed, Vader etc) or Morrisound (Obituary, Morbid Angel). There were some bands outside of this, like Autopsy that had a raw sound that I still liked. In a time before the internet, Black metal sounded more underground and authentic. It didn't stay that way for long, but for a year or two before it blew up in the press, it was great.

I was a big fan of underground rap, various genres of instrumental and ambient music, and lots of electronic music. As my friends tried to get me into death metal, metalcore, and real techie bands I ended up getting into black metal far more than I like the prior genres.
If anything it shows how similar punk and black metal are at their driving attitudes, also to hold Finn to his standards Nazi punk and Nazi black metal are technically the Pinnacle of the contraian and anti-conformist spirit that were the impetus of the creation of the genres.

I would say a band like G.G. Finn rubs a lot of people the wrong way, but I’ve learned a lot of interesting things about music and art from him. The inner hater in me enjoys the slight trolling he does to create engagement and trigger the overly serious fans in his comments. At the end of the day a UA-camr is an entertainer. He definitely has a lot of opinions and takes that I don’t agree with, but I respect him and can still see his value in the internet extreme music space. I like almost all types of metal personally. There’s usually something good if you look hard enough and invest a little time to find the artists that do appeal to you. (nerds larping can make amazing art too)
I started to like some black metal when I started to related it to some sort of dark fantasy because Im a nerd. I have a soft spot for Dungeon Synth as well.
Since he said he's a punk musician in his 40's I'm guessing the times where music was passed mostly by word of mouth lacking the internet, Most the bands he pulled out were underground in America's which back then was fenced by hardcore bands like biohazard European bands were rare and mostly mayhem was able to break the publicity boundaries in the time, The best black metal bands were mostly in Europe which was only known to America from UA-cam itself

Finn is stuck on the perception I had of black metal which is largely from the 90's to mid 00's. When I first got into metal I was big into thrash and I discovered cradle of filth and dimmu not too long after and I tried to dive deeper into black metal via forums back in the day and it was very gatekeep-y. so I ended up having having a pretty sour taste in my mouth about the black metal community until last year when actually we acquired a new vocalist for my band who is very big into black metal and at first when we asked him for influences and he said BM i internally groaned, but he's a phenomenal vocalist and we agreed to bring him on and he's one of the most chill dudes i know and really has educated on BM. It was very eye opening and now he's showing me a ton of BM bands that are honestly fantastic. I like Finn, most of the stuff he said I understand to be factually correct, but his perception should be updated. If he still doesn't like the music that fine art is subjective, but to think all BM fans are still these elitist dorks burning churches is odd.
Great to see that adult former Black Metal elitists agree on a simple fact. It was great feeling superior in our youth, trying to live the cult. I can laugh very hard about my former self and still love the good old stuff.
Also, I had hoped he would talk about how black metal has had a massive influence across all modern genres of metal. There's so much black metal sound in deathcore for example. You hear tremelo picking parts, high shrieking vocals, etc in all of that. This is discussed enough IMO.

Good video. I enjoyed both sides. The first 2 Venom albums were incredible. Bathory from inception to Valhalla. I like Cradle, Dimmu, and satyricon. Love the dark throne and mayhem. Like the black noise and experimental.
Back in the 90s before the internet was so accessible and full of information like it is now. Lords of Chaos exposed us to a lot bands we never heard of. And gave us a synopsis of the scene, since it was so underground.There was maybe 1 cd of the major BM bands like Emperor and Dimmu Borgir in the record stores.
Truthfully, all bands within a given genre tend to sound very similar. That is the whole idea behind a genre, afterall. For me, the most interesting music is when different genres are combined in creative and novel ways. This is likely why stuff like Blackened Symphonic Deathcore are so appealing these past 10 or so years, they have the best of all worlds! To each their own, I respect and enjoy almost every form of music to some extent, from pop to metal to country to rap. But hey, that's just me, a guy with a short attention span and almost zero bias or bigotry in my perception of the world, from music and beyond.

It's so weird that for other genres, he at least lists off some elements of the music (how metalcore stole at the gates riffs and emphasized breakdowns, or how death metal used low growls, tremolo picking and interesting blast beats), but for this video he says nothing. No mention of tremolo picked intense, hypnotic, melancholic, or uplifting melodies... no mention of the european folk influence and actual use of folk instruments sometimes... no mention of banshee shrieks or hate forest orc vocals... no mention of primitive drumming... Just the production... *sigh*

The problem with Finn's video is that he implies people only like black metal for the marketing/image of the scene, rather than the music itself. That's blatantly untrue, and unless you're a high schooler, most music fans don't care about fitting into a "scene". The reality is, black metal is popular because the music is creative, atmospheric, varied, and constantly evolving. Darkthrone, Agalloch, and Blut Aus Nord would all loosely be categorized as black metal, but none of them sound remotely similar. Finn's point about black metal bands being copycats is absurd. Does anyone listen to a band like Panopticon and think they're trying to copy Burzum? No.
I think Burzum's "Det som engang var" was the first black metal I listened to, and since then I love black metal. Not all black metal, but there are tracks that are just perfect. "Ov my herculean exile" by Behemoth is my recent favorite.

I've noticed whenever I record a metal song that is fast, short, has mid range harsh vocals, inevitibly someone will say "sounds like black metal." this shows me what a superficial understanding of black metal many folks have. My influences are grindcore, thrash, death metal. I have no problem with black metal though. Its growing on me.
Darkthrone really takes the shit out of black metal on "Too Old Too Cold". On the whole political thing though, nazi punk exists too, NSBM don't have exclusivity on that, case of "punk calling the metal black". It's a perfectly valid subgenre though - it's antagonistic, provocative, offensive and anti-establishment, and what more could black metal aspire to be? If the establishment is muslim, make anti-islamic black metal. If the establishment is christian, make anti-christian black metal. If the establishment is woke, make anti-woke black metal. And so on. The establishment never lasts forever, and when it changes its values, the antagonistic focus changes too in the opposite direction. Anti-Christian black metal was a really provocative thing in the days where the Christian establishment of that era had its Satanic Panic towards music, films, video games, books and so on, but now anti-Christianity is mainstream and really just low-hanging fruit - black metal should really just start burning Qurans and LGBT flags to get back into the game again. 😈 When Hoest of Taake painted a swastika on his chest at a concert in Germany simply because he wanted to offend the Germans watching, he was doing it right - even though he doesn't play NSBM at all - the aftershock was epic, and in true spirit 😁
I really like black metal and metalcore but i wasnt really a fan of any of them before but that changed when i actually started listening to it more and found the varieties that got me into it. Im still not the biggest fan of modern metalcore but im such a sucker for the more hardcore based variety released before 2005. I think that black metal is still the style i listen to more but it feels nice having taken a dive into these genres.

I bought Blackened Vol. 1 at a record store back in 1996, and have been a fan of black metal ever since. I don't like all bands, but there's a ton of great material that's been produced over the past 35+ years. It's definitely an acquired taste, but if it resonates with you then it's a hell of a great listen. A lot of it is the atmosphere that is created by the music, and the aggression. If you grew up a fan of horror films, the occult, myths surrounding vampires and werewolves, dark fantasy novels, Dungeons & Dragons, and all that sort of stuff, especially back in the 80's and early 90's, black metal just creates the perfect soundtrack to go along with all of that.
We like it because it's awesome! The first music my son ever heard was Burzum Dunkelheit about half an hour after he was born. It calmed him down and he fell asleep.

Unfortunately Black metal ultimately fell victim to the reality of music and genre categorisation which is musical conventions and tropes so black metal bands aren't exactly unique which is one of the complaints they had towards death metal.

I’m so thankful black metal found me and I haven’t stopped listening since… I embrace the darkness… the music feels like my insides…
That's exactly how I felt the first time I heard doom metal, it was like, where have you been all my life? I was introduced to black metal by a friend in high school though and loved it ever since, it's the only music you can truly relate to when you're totally dead inside.

I think my only issue with the video is that it assumes that black metal is listened to mainly to capitalize on its image, and not because people like how it sounds. It’s interesting to me how to some people describe the music as sounding like nails on a chalkboard and others describe it as beautiful. Don’t get me wrong I love the aesthetics of the genre, and the occult themes but I’d never force myself to listen to music unless I genuinely liked it.
I think I remember when I disliked the black metal sound. To be honest I tend to like "better produced" music but suddenly the sound just made sense to me.

One of the big things that people that are not informed of the scene don’t think about the American and Brazilian, and Canadian scenes of black metal that were before and around the same time, bands like sarcafago, blasphemy, and profanatica
I'm norwegian and grew up with Dimmu Borgir and Satyricon as my main bands in my youth. Been on and off black metal through the 2000's, but now it's my main shit again, by far, with doom and sludge.
I would say that black metal has never been better and more creative and fresh as it is these days. I got *counting*... 42 BM bands that have put out music between 2018 and now, that I have in my rotation and they range from more old school to modern, atmospheric black metal.
It's the purest form of emotion and musically it has this genuine and creative vibe that few other genres have these days.
Most importantly; black metal anno 2024 is as far from boring as it could be.

As a genre it's raw yet beautiful, It's Dark yet enlightening, It's unintelligible yet understanable.
Theres a gravitation towards it because the genre is extremely different in comparison to so many other genres of music, even within the metal scene. Black Metal contnuously flips its head as to what you make of it.
The sub genres of black metal combine with other genres and themes, such as folk music, medieval themes, symphonic and melodic, Atmospheric and Ambient.
Theres a strange beauty to it.

I more or less agree almost with everything, but the guy in the original video forgot to mention very important fact that accompanies black metal almost from the beginning - a reference to our original pre-christian cultures and paganism and the resulting opposition to christianity and other authoritarian religions. Of course, not all black metal bands are like that, but it is a fundamental fact that is inextricably linked to black metal. A lot of people who return to their roots do so through black metal as well.

I think that part of the appeal in the early days (for me the late 80s and early 90s) was that you had to work to find your way into it. You could buy a Morbid Angel album in pretty much any music store. Black Metal felt like you'd found a secret door into something a bit hidden and exciting. You'd eagerly hunt for tapes and faded photocopies of fanzines. Weirdly, part of the appeal was that pretty much everyone...even people who listened to death metal...HATED it. Black metal was the darkest corner of the basement of the metal scene.
Man, I loved the excitement of finding new bands randomly. I don't know how much money I threw at bands I didn't know anything about besides the genre they were playing. I consider myself lucky to have been able to experience what waiting in front of a store felt like. Damn, I miss those times.

I laugh now, but I bought the first Impaled Nazarene album (on vinyl...I'm that old) pretty much because I thought the band name was cool and Finland seemed even more like a place for crazy guys in the woods than Norway. It took weeks to arrive and, when I got it, I played it again and again all day. My friends who liked heavy music thought it was just 'shitty noise' but, to my ears, it's was exhilarating and almost unsettling. Like smelling salts for the ears.
Black Metal was not and never was the darkest corner of the metal scene, in most cases. It was the most DRAMATIC, when it comes to both sound and aesthetics. Death Metal takes the cake of darkness, but by a mile. The sound is a lot more powerful, cold, , without emo-melancholic moments, and you have songs speaking about people being brutally murdered, tortured or r*ped. Even identifying the Human Race in general as an inferior species lol. And there are also Satanic Death Metal bands, like Deicide and Vader, whose lyrics are extremely and explicitly violent regarding how they praise Jesus choking to death on his blood, and smashing the face of Jewish God, etc. If your concept of "Darkness" is being mellow, dramatic and melancholic, there's a ton load of bands and artists outside Metal in general, which do it in a more deep manner than most Black Metal.
@@HeathenDance I respect your view. I am just saying what it sounded like to me as a rural 16 year old English kid back in the early 90s. Back then...to me...Death metal was becoming pretty generic. Most of it was in the two sound camps of Sunlight Studios (Entombed, Vader etc) or Morrisound (Obituary, Morbid Angel). There were some bands outside of this, like Autopsy that had a raw sound that I still liked. In a time before the internet, Black metal sounded more underground and authentic. It didn't stay that way for long, but for a year or two before it blew up in the press, it was great.

I was a big fan of underground rap, various genres of instrumental and ambient music, and lots of electronic music. As my friends tried to get me into death metal, metalcore, and real techie bands I ended up getting into black metal far more than I like the prior genres.

Finn rubs a lot of people the wrong way, but I’ve learned a lot of interesting things about music and art from him. The inner hater in me enjoys the slight trolling he does to create engagement and trigger the overly serious fans in his comments. At the end of the day a UA-camr is an entertainer. He definitely has a lot of opinions and takes that I don’t agree with, but I respect him and can still see his value in the internet extreme music space. I like almost all types of metal personally. There’s usually something good if you look hard enough and invest a little time to find the artists that do appeal to you. (nerds larping can make amazing art too)

Finn is stuck on the perception I had of black metal which is largely from the 90's to mid 00's. When I first got into metal I was big into thrash and I discovered cradle of filth and dimmu not too long after and I tried to dive deeper into black metal via forums back in the day and it was very gatekeep-y. so I ended up having having a pretty sour taste in my mouth about the black metal community until last year when actually we acquired a new vocalist for my band who is very big into black metal and at first when we asked him for influences and he said BM i internally groaned, but he's a phenomenal vocalist and we agreed to bring him on and he's one of the most chill dudes i know and really has educated on BM. It was very eye opening and now he's showing me a ton of BM bands that are honestly fantastic. I like Finn, most of the stuff he said I understand to be factually correct, but his perception should be updated. If he still doesn't like the music that fine art is subjective, but to think all BM fans are still these elitist dorks burning churches is odd.

Also, I had hoped he would talk about how black metal has had a massive influence across all modern genres of metal. There's so much black metal sound in deathcore for example. You hear tremelo picking parts, high shrieking vocals, etc in all of that. This is discussed enough IMO.

Good video. I enjoyed both sides. The first 2 Venom albums were incredible. Bathory from inception to Valhalla. I like Cradle, Dimmu, and satyricon. Love the dark throne and mayhem. Like the black noise and experimental.
Back in the 90s before the internet was so accessible and full of information like it is now. Lords of Chaos exposed us to a lot bands we never heard of. And gave us a synopsis of the scene, since it was so underground.There was maybe 1 cd of the major BM bands like Emperor and Dimmu Borgir in the record stores.
Truthfully, all bands within a given genre tend to sound very similar. That is the whole idea behind a genre, afterall. For me, the most interesting music is when different genres are combined in creative and novel ways. This is likely why stuff like Blackened Symphonic Deathcore are so appealing these past 10 or so years, they have the best of all worlds! To each their own, I respect and enjoy almost every form of music to some extent, from pop to metal to country to rap. But hey, that's just me, a guy with a short attention span and almost zero bias or bigotry in my perception of the world, from music and beyond.

It's so weird that for other genres, he at least lists off some elements of the music (how metalcore stole at the gates riffs and emphasized breakdowns, or how death metal used low growls, tremolo picking and interesting blast beats), but for this video he says nothing. No mention of tremolo picked intense, hypnotic, melancholic, or uplifting melodies... no mention of the european folk influence and actual use of folk instruments sometimes... no mention of banshee shrieks or hate forest orc vocals... no mention of primitive drumming...

The problem with Finn's video is that he implies people only like black metal for the marketing/image of the scene, rather than the music itself. That's blatantly untrue, and unless you're a high schooler, most music fans don't care about fitting into a "scene".
The reality is, black metal is popular because the music is creative, atmospheric, varied, and constantly evolving. Darkthrone, Agalloch, and Blut Aus Nord would all loosely be categorized as black metal, but none of them sound remotely similar. Finn's point about black metal bands being copycats is absurd. Does anyone listen to a band like Panopticon and think they're trying to copy Burzum? No.
I think Burzum's "Det som engang var" was the first black metal I listened to, and since then I love black metal. Not all black metal, but there are tracks that are just perfect. "Ov my herculean exile" by Behemoth is my recent favorite.

I've noticed whenever I record a metal song that is fast, short, has mid range harsh vocals, inevitibly someone will say "sounds like black metal." this shows me what a superficial understanding of black metal many folks have. My influences are grindcore, thrash, death metal. I have no problem with black metal though. Its growing on me.

On the whole political thing though, nazi punk exists too, NSBM don't have exclusivity on that, case of "punk calling the metal black". It's a perfectly valid subgenre though - it's antagonistic, provocative, offensive and anti-establishment, and what more could black metal aspire to be?
If the establishment is muslim, make anti-islamic black metal.
If the establishment is christian, make anti-christian black metal.
If the establishment is woke, make anti-woke black metal. And so on.
The establishment never lasts forever, and when it changes its values, the antagonistic focus changes too in the opposite direction. Anti-Christian black metal was a really provocative thing in the days where the Christian establishment of that era had its Satanic Panic towards music, films, video games, books and so on, but now anti-Christianity is mainstream and really just low-hanging fruit - black metal should really just start burning Qurans and LGBT flags to get back into the game again. 😈
When Hoest of Taake painted a swastika on his chest at a concert in Germany simply because he wanted to offend the Germans watching, he was doing it right - even though he doesn't play NSBM at all - the aftershock was epic, and in true spirit 😁

I really like black metal and metalcore but i wasnt really a fan of any of them before but that changed when i actually started listening to it more and found the varieties that got me into it. Im still not the biggest fan of modern metalcore but im such a sucker for the more hardcore based variety released before 2005. I think that black metal is still the style i listen to more but it feels nice having taken a dive into these genres.

I bought Blackened Vol. 1 at a record store back in 1996, and have been a fan of black metal ever since. I don't like all bands, but there's a ton of great material that's been produced over the past 35+ years. It's definitely an acquired taste, but if it resonates with you then it's a hell of a great listen. A lot of it is the atmosphere that is created by the music, and the aggression.
If you grew up a fan of horror films, the occult, myths surrounding vampires and werewolves, dark fantasy novels, Dungeons & Dragons, and all that sort of stuff, especially back in the 80's and early 90's, black metal just creates the perfect soundtrack to go along with all of that.
