I attend this school district, and the students are 100% behind the teachers. The board has stagnated their pay while increasing their workload, and this speech is just one of hundreds teachers have given in the past months.
@Grant Colvin You don't like the pay then find a different job. Neurosurgeons have a much higher workload and they have to work on call 24 hour shifts after studying for 15 hours a day for 15+ years.

I always wondered why sports players are seen as heroes and are paid high salaries when it is actually the teachers that helped them launch their lucrative careers. When do teachers get cheerleaders boosting their spirits and supporting them? Maybe some board members, legislatures, and secretary of education need a lesson or two or three...
If only all teachers truly cared. I had two very good teachers who never gave up on me. I never got the education I wanted because my home life was so disruptive, but I had two of the greatest teacher's refusing to give up on me in first and second grade. I was never spoken to because I was an introvert, but that doesn't mean I wasn't observing. I always felt dumb. I would forget to do my homework and be so upset with myself. There was no routine in our home. My parent's would take us to my aunts house right after school and keep us out until 3:00am and expect us to go to school; we had no time to do homework once we did get home. I seriously feel 4th grade was the last grade I had completed; I'm lucky I can read for as much as we moved around. I did eventually study at home to get my G.E.D.; though I wish I had an actual diploma. I owe anything I do know as far as reading, to my 1st and 2nd grade teachers who both took the extra time, attention, and concern for my education.
I still go back and watch this, I’m a Middle School Teacher for the 7th grade. And she’s right. “You never get your needs done, but you stay in it for the kids”

America is a nation wired Catholic, labeled Protestant, and functioning secular. People don’t believe this when they first hear it, but it’s demonstrably true. And the cryptic interaction between Catholicism and both the young nation’s native Protestantism and post-Enlightenment secularism has wrought a land of deep and possibly fatal contradiction. The impasse between the American republic’s wiring, labeling, and functioning has also turned it into a republic in name only that, without change, will soon perish. Our national infirmity is betrayed by six symptoms indicating that America misses muster as a true republic. The stubbornly incredulous American anti-Catholicism on the religious right (today’s grandkids of the Reformation) and on the secular left (today’s grandkids of the Enlightenment) must evaporate before the existential threat can be nullified. There is only one solution to American decadence in 2016-and, like it or lump it, that solution is Catholic. Here is the paradox: through shameless plagiarism of the Catholic natural law tradition, the Reformation-Enlightenment-inspired founders of this nation created a new regime centered upon the very thing that the Reformation and the Enlightenment had rejected throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: the Catholic natural law. Let that irony sink in. As Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote of the Protestant preacher Arthur Dimmesdale in The Scarlet Letter: “The pale clergyman piled up his library, rich with parchment-bound folios of the Fathers . . . and monkish erudition, of which the Protestant divines, even while they vilified and decried that class of writers, were yet constrained often to avail themselves.” History is stranger even than Hawthorne’s fiction. This secret plagiarism features in American history as a sort of intellectual schizophrenia by the religious right and the secular left. Each camp’s sixteenth-century “grandparent”-respectively, the Reformation and the Enlightenment-has for five centuries sermonized against the Catholic natural law. Stranger still is the irony that the two “rivals” have far more in common-a potent allergy to natural law-than either side wishes to recall. They are false rivals, fake opposites. Think of both “Protestant natural law” and “Enlightenment natural law” as contradictions in terms. One could argue that Catholic natural law (Thomas Aquinas’s brand of Aristotelianism) is the only genuine brand of it. But a luminary or two from either camp occasionally referred to something they called “natural law,” however misguided their criteria might have been. It proves to be a sufficiently argumentative task just showing Americans that the ideas they’ve long embraced about politics and culture are uniquely Catholic. So let’s just stick with that.REST ABOUT BOOK BY TIMOTHY GORDON" CATHOLIC REPUBLIC:WHY AMERICA WILL PERISH WITHOUT ROME" ON CATHOLIC ANSWERS PAGE

As a former teacher, I’m sooo glad, after 36 years, I’m retired. This government has destroyed the teaching profession and I’m so upset about what the children have suffered. This lady said it so well. Sad but so true.
But - has not the government destroyed everything? Labor unions are near-banned in the majority of states, as with the right to strike. Pension funds for state employees at risk of default - and much of this is due to incompetent financial management (think: the very wealthy keep on increasing their wealth near-exponentially, yet so many state employee pension funds that held billions of dollars failed - the 'managers' of these, protected by obscure laws, conjured-uo by Republican administrations at both the state and federal level). Very expensive medical care - unlike most 'western industrialized democracies'. The expected collapse of Social Security within ten years, if new funding and/or increase if premiums is not found or imposed. Continue voting-in GOP administrators and all the aforementioned and more, will continue. Heaven help the United States...
You are mistaken and misled. This great administration has provided funding, but State Legislatures must use the funds properly. The Federal government has nothing to do with that. You are blindly prejudiced, and that is also part of the problem.

Being completely honest, in my life I've had maybe a three or four teachers that have ever taught me anything of value. The majority of the rest of my education was either because my parents put in the effort, I did or I got a private tutor. Teachers are one of those groups that like to cry crocodile tears while in the spotlight but the moment the light is off they exercise their insecurities over their students and take every opportunity to let their personal politics leak into their curriculum. There are plenty of teachers that are legitimate in their intentions and sincerely deserve better work conditions but even there a great many just dig their own grave either through the politics they push or the associations they chose to be a part of. It's why context maters, we don't know what the problem is here - for all we know she could be acting like a spoiled brat.

In my district, there's a woman who was a superintendent and goes by the name 'Pat'. She gave herself $30,000 annual raise on top of $220,000 years ago while none others got any raise. It was approved in an "approved or fire the one who disapproved". Yes, it's in CA as well.
@holiday671 You do realize that a lot of teachers don't just work from school bell to school bell, right. They start anywhere from an hour earlier to an hour or more later as well, along with having meetings with parents and students after school and also helping students with problems after the school day has ended. They also take work home with them to grade assignments, grade tests, create lesson plans, gets grades ready for report cards etc. They are also required to work a week past the schools closing for the summers and they also have to get lesson plans and activities ready for the beginning of the next school year during their so called summer vacation and the same goes for any of their vacations throughout the year. The amount of work that goes into being a teacher isn't just what you want to see but a whole lot more. And yes there are some teachers that do the bare minimum and ride it but they are very few and far between but the most of them go that extra mile to do their work and make sure their students are taught and ready for the next stage whether it be grade 2 or college/university. The $60,000 for the amount of work that is required and the extra they put into their job probably works out to be like $4-$6 an hour which isn't a lot compared to the lack of work from the school administrators that make $160,00+ per year and vote their own raises in when they feel they need more money and do less than half the work of any teacher
Teachers used to be students and they too got bullied when they were young. Now they're teachers but still ended up getting bullied by the school board. Poor teachers! They don't get the respect they deserve nowadays!
I think the main reason that teachers don't get much respect is that the lazy teachers and the teachers who bully their students ruin things for the good teachers.
You know what you talk about a segment or a population that's taking advantage of or bullied or whatever best teachers I mean I've known some of the best people in the world are teachers and they're so dedicated to their work and so concerned about the kids and what they do I mean a lot of times money comes out of their pocket for supplies because the school system will not supply and they go to school for years to get a degree in teaching and a lot of people make a lot more than they do they are really a much undervalued professional and my heart goes out to them God bless them

Very illuminating and powerfully descriptive!
OLD TIMES EXCELLENT PUBLIC SCHOOLS & TEACHERS GONEE ---NOW INDOCTRINATION
This definition should be included in the Oxford Dictionary. It's the best I've ever come across on "bullying".
Then you must also believe that parenting is bullying because there's an uneven power dynamic in which the child could accuse the parent of disrespect because they don't like being disciplined. Do you believe that offering your employees a 3-year contract is bullying them because you aren't giving them the increased pay they want now--regardless the circumstances that affect your ability to pay? I don't. If there are jobs in your field that pay better, then go get one and stop puling on video because you couldn't get the raise you want.

@Elizabeth Cambridge well here in Texas the education system is all about standardized testing. So they do not approve of teachers going off the strict curriculum, and it hinders what/how these teachers teach not just about the subject they are teaching but also how life actually works. Certain things that they will actually need in life. I remember being a kid, and learning so much more from my teachers, and as I got closer to high school that started changing, and it really effected a lot of students

Be careful of being convinced by your emotions, she didn’t say a single fact, it was very vague. If you are” on her side” at this point then you definitely shouldn’t be a judge, you wouldn’t send anyone to jail lol especially not women.
As Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote of the Protestant preacher Arthur Dimmesdale in The Scarlet Letter: “The pale clergyman piled up his library, rich with parchment-bound folios of the Fathers . . . and monkish erudition, of which the Protestant divines, even while they vilified and decried that class of writers, were yet constrained often to avail themselves.”
History is stranger even than Hawthorne’s fiction.

@holiday671 Teachers educate the future adults that will be deciding the futures of our wrinkly old butts...They should absolutely be considered as important as doctors and paid respectively. Parents all over trying to home school just their own (not a class of 30) and failing miserably...get bent.
