@Simba Your observations are accurate to be sure, but the real horrors of the US system are the electoral college and campaign finance laws. There have been five elections (including two in the last 20 years) in which a candidate got more electoral college votes but lost the popular vote. Most recently, 2.8 million more people voted for Clinton, but because of the way the electoral college system is structured, tRump got in. It puts the election in a handful of swing states which decides the results for the entire country. The recent erosion to campaign finance laws have basically legalized political bribery to the benefit of the power elite in both parties. Both of these issues are responsible for squelching much chance for third parties to gain traction. Recent extreme efforts by Republicans to suppress voter participation have also contributed to the point where the U.S. is now considered a "Flawed Democracy", ranked 25th on the Democracy Index compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The so-called "Beacon of Hope" the US used to aspire to be is now a cautionary tale about how a noble experiment can, in time, fail.

I must be wired wrong: when I was a little kid my father showed me a piece of wood and showed me how the grain of the wood branched-out in different directions throughout the depth of the piece of wood. Then he told me something profound (profound enough for me to remember it 40 years later!) What gives the wood its strength is the way the grain runs in overlapping patterns, all through the thickness of a piece of lumber. He told me - that is how people work too. My dad was an immigrant to the USA. He had four years of education to his name - that’s it. He spent his life making furniture in a workshop surrounded by people from all four corners of the world. And right up until the day that he died I NEVER ONCE heard him refer to anyone as anything other than a person/man/woman… their race, their color, their religion never once entered the conversation. That was a guy who had virtually no education at all - just what he could do with his two hands at his bench… but he seemed to be more sophisticated (or simple) than a whole swath of society still!

Why don’t you Americans have someone like this running for your presidential election ?
Seriously. American leaders with both integrity and a backbone are pretty rare.

The person who wrote the messages turned out to be black. He claimed he had suffered previously from a head concussion, which caused him to write the messages, even on his own dorm room door! Imagine that!.
Investigators discovered that this guy had several bad incidents in his past while attending the prep school, so the writing was to shift focus away from his history and get people to feel sorry for him because he was now a poor victim of evil white racism. So there wasn't anything "Going on in there" no "corruption" no "Racism" This was just some guy who had made some mistakes while attending the prep school and felt those mistakes would keep him out of the Air Force Academy. So he engineered this little charade so that people would feel sorry for him and perhaps allow him to attend the Academy because, you know, he had been a victim and all.

It's a shame in the 21st century that racist incidents have to manufactured because there are so few of them.
Thank you for sharing your father with us.
Yes, thank you for sharing this story. So true. Diversity makes us strong when we love and understand. My mum taught me to do good and be good. Just a helping a hand sometimes. Your dad is a blessing to this world.
Mario, that's the best thing I've heard in a long time. Your father was truly human and what you wrote makes me happy but also thoughtful. Because obviously, the majority of people have not understood that it is as you have described it. We are all human beings. I think we have to live with it because there are so many others out there that we are not even aware of. Keep your thoughts of your father, because they are the most beautiful and best thing I have heard in a long time. Please excuse my English, I am only a German.
Thank you - Dad had a funny way of telling me about trees and wood that turned out to NOT be about wood. It was an eye-opening experience when I realized how weirdly profound some of his lessons were.
Ya pops sounded like a good man m8, and it means absolutely nothing in this world what type of education you may have opposed to the next man or woman, because no matter how much a person knows or think they know, they can still learn something from their fellow man, after all there ain't a person alive that knows everything is there. Ya dad sounds to me like he had good qualities, a lot better than many of this era that's for sure.
