“This government is not dying of shame. My father did not die of shame!” This is one of the most powerful moments in this speech for me. For context, earlier in the speech, Julia refers to the conduct of the Sydney Young Liberals as well as some members of the opposition who were also in attendance at a party meeting. Someone at this meeting had joked in a speech that Julia’s father (who had recently passed away) died of shame, alluding to her performance as prime minister. Everyone in the audience laughed and cheered and it wasn’t until someone leaked it to the media that anyone in attendance pretended to be offended.
Funny she should recount that line in a speech attacking Tony Abbott. I don't recall Tony Abbott saying that her father had died of shame. Because he didn't. It's nice when you can impute words to your opponent that he didn't say.
@@WilliamSmith-mx6ze- Abbott took a line from the shock jock Alan Jones saying that Julia Gillard father died of shame and reused it in reference to her performance in parliament. He knew exactly what he was doing and that is why Julia Gillard referenced it in her speech.

@CyrusTheGreat Ever been to Australia? They treat the first Australians (the Aboriginal people) like dogs. Believe me you don't have to go to the Middle East to find abuse. It's in our backyard. There are issues of violence and abuse of children and women all over the planet. We need to address issues one issue at a time. If women are being abused in my backyard I have to deal with it here. Are you from the Middle East? If so then it's a relevant issue in your backyard. You have to speak out in your society. Remember, that's how more light can be shone on these issues. Australia is s very racist sexist violent place.
The Leader of the Opposition also said when Prime Minister Julia Gillard,s father died - that her father died of shame in her. He is a disgusting man in so many ways. Julia was Australia's first female Prime Minister and him and others got way down in the gutter to attack her personally. Totally disgusting and a well deserved roasting from her here.
Yeah, he started spreading those rumours while Gillard was burying her father. Than Abbott had the cheek to use the same line in this debate just after Gillard got back from leave on her father's funeral. To use a death of a parent to score a political point is what constitutes a grub in my opinion.
@@Chippychops7 don't bother the Gillard luvvies change history to suit their failed leader but yes it was Alan Jones that said that about her father not Abbott.
@@brantleyfoster021 Alan Jones was recorded by phone saying this at a function he was hosting then someone released to the media, Tony Abbott never used or started this slur.
He literally went from arrogantly smirking to a deer caught in head lights when she brought out the receipts. She did her thing for not only Australia but other women who are severely underrepresented.
Well he has a point, men do tend to have a better temprament to lead since the distribution of qualities is men is highly spread out, bu extention of which there are more men who are at the very peak, hence in more of a position to lead while also making up most of the bottom of the landscape(more than 90 percent people in prison men and more than 90 percent top ceo's also men) On average men and wemen may be equal but at the extremes it is almost all men.
@Tejas Srikanth 90 percent people in jails:- Men 90 percent top ceos:- Men 90 percent top richest:- Men Its clear to see all the people with extreme traits are men, as you want the leader to be the very best, it is almost always men, not saying its all men though, just most. As for proof, in the top 100 players there is one woman, one, and 10 percent players are wemen in total, while wemen are just as capable as men, people who tend to spen 16 hours a day working their entire life mostly tend to be men. Hows that for proof?
@Tejas Srikanth yes correlation isnt causation, not necessarily but, here is the thing, of the top working people most are men, just one point, highest hours productive working people are mostly men(above 12 hours) Now this does qualify most top leaders to be men, there is no doubt here better capability more leadership skills equals top positions. This is why most top leaders are men, dont deny facts bro.
Only Change is certain - I could be wrong but I believe in many parliament democracies the tradition of doing things is referring to one by their office - MP for Fisher, Minister for Health, Leader of the Opposition - or the Speaker of the House calls you out on it
By not using his name and referring him as "leader of the opposition", she is bashing the whole opposition. If she used his name it would have become a mere personal attack.
silent power of this speech is that she hasn’t mention his name once. i’ve watched it twice and have literally no idea who tf this man is except leader of the opposition
Also that’s government rules, you aren’t allowed to call on someone by name only position and if you break that rule you will be removed from the house for the day.
And you ruin any progress towards equality by calling her a "strong woman." She is a strong Prime Minister. She is a strong leader. One step forward, two steps back with silly comments like yours....
I would point out to you that was an extremely entitled, racist, very very conservative shock jock, Alan Jones that said that. Not surprisingly, Tony Abbott and Alan Jones like the Oracle of Delphi with the right-wing shock jocks and their audience. That same entitled shock jock has the distinction of being sued by numerous people, in some cases for millions. In one great example defamed a female police office, lost and the result was an expensive new kitchen, complete with plaque telling who paid for it and why.
She delivered this speech based off of a couple of hand-written notes that she prepared on the spot. She also had the sexist quotes ready from beforehand. It was an improvised speech, which makes it so much more impressive.
She didn’t get this job walking off the street, she got it because she was a fantastic lawyer. Not to detract from what she did, but the fact she can prepare an argument on the spot shouldn’t seem exceptional.

She lost the vote shortly after this speech by a couple percent. She was slipping down the drain, and this was her last card which she blew. This was no victory, it was an admirable defeat.

Parliamentary debate rule: never refer someone by their name, always in the third person, so something like "the gentlewoman from New York" (in the US) or "the right honourable member of (constituency)" (those using the British system).
You aren't allowed to mention anyone's name, therefore leader of the opposition deputy speaker, whip, etc. It's to make it very clear that it isn't personal and it's the position that matters, not who sits in the chair, but the chair itself. At least in Theory.

“This government is not dying of shame. My father did not die of shame!”
This is one of the most powerful moments in this speech for me.
Those people are feral for making a joke about that. Wow.

@@MDWSMusic too right, Abbott was a complete disgrace.
Well he has a point, men do tend to have a better temprament to lead since the distribution of qualities is men is highly spread out, bu extention of which there are more men who are at the very peak, hence in more of a position to lead while also making up most of the bottom of the landscape(more than 90 percent people in prison men and more than 90 percent top ceo's also men)
On average men and wemen may be equal but at the extremes it is almost all men.
@Tejas Srikanth
90 percent people in jails:- Men
90 percent top ceos:- Men
90 percent top richest:- Men
Its clear to see all the people with extreme traits are men, as you want the leader to be the very best, it is almost always men, not saying its all men though, just most.
As for proof, in the top 100 players there is one woman, one, and 10 percent players are wemen in total, while wemen are just as capable as men, people who tend to spen 16 hours a day working their entire life mostly tend to be men.
Hows that for proof?
@Tejas Srikanth yes correlation isnt causation, not necessarily but, here is the thing, of the top working people most are men,
just one point,
highest hours productive working people are mostly men(above 12 hours)
Now this does qualify most top leaders to be men, there is no doubt here better capability more leadership skills equals top positions.
This is why most top leaders are men, dont deny facts bro.

@bad1dobby He would have checked his watch if a man delivered such a weak, repetitive argument. The way is appears to me, you are trying to create sexism to get offended at.
@bad1dobby It would honestly depend on the reasoning behind it, the problem is, any woman that stands up and says stuff tends to be praised as heroic right up to the point of it being discovered to being a lie and sometimes even after it is discovered to be a lie.
@bad1dobby well I find you point to be quite stupid, how could he imply anything based on gender in he acted regardless of gender?
What the PM actually did is lay out example after example and pretend they show sexism. How is anything she quoted him saying indicative of sexism? Because it offended her? Thats all the explaining that came from her on why what he said was sexist.

Margaret , I think your reply does not fairly represent the situation in 2012. Firstly , Julia Gillard was Australia’s first female Prime Minister and regardless of what side of the aisle you sat , she was the first to stand up against the inherent “boys “culture that unfortunately still exists behind those closed doors , and not so closed doors . It really was an appalling time ,and quite disgusting the things that were said about her , in particular focussing solely on her “existence” as a female , which I’m ashamed to admit ,we have been too slow to respond to.
@Stabswache How did that nice Mr Abbott go as Prime Minister? I seem to remember he also was the Minister for Women. And didn't he bestow a knighthood on Prince Phillip?
Hey Margaret. I think your comment epitomizes the typical reactive partisanship displayed by those of us on the right - or who think we're in the right perhaps. The prime minister didn't have to justify her actions in supporting Mr Slipper. The trouble with your type of mindset is that you interpret not commenting until all the facts are debated with support.
