Thanks John. Unfortunately there's no way to get those marks out. Vegetable tan leather is easily marked, which makes it ideal for leather carving. Chromium tan leather is not a problem in this way. I don't really mind though, it gives it a bit of a rustic look. An expensive sewing machine like the Cowboy CB4500 would not have this problem, but I think the machine costs about $3000.

@@jeffallen3382 Hello Jeff, sorry about the late reply. I had trouble sewing thick leather when I first got the machine and often the thread would break. First I had to find #20 needles, which wasn't easy, but I found them on eBay from China. Most needles this size are made for industrial machine, and they will not work in such a machine. Then I sharpened the needles to a chisel point, you can Google this and see what that looks like. This is how needles used for leather look. The last thing I did was take a small metal file and round off all the sharp edges from my bobbin (but not the sharp point at the front that catches the thread), I think it was this sharp edge that was cutting the thread on a tight stitch. The machine is really not designed for thick leather. The thickest I can go is about 1/4" or maybe 5mm. The thread I use is from The Thread Exchange in North Carolina, USA and it's 100% polyester. Hope this helps, and thanks for the compliment!
@@jeffallen3382 Hi Jeff. I don't know anything about the Tippmann Boss machine, but it looks like a decent machine. If it's in good condition and think $700 would be a fair price, but I haven't looked into it. I've thought about getting something heavier myself but I'm not into this in a big way. If I was going to get into this in a big way I would buy the Cowboy CB6500 machine, but that's about $2500, Good luck!

I wish I could use my shoe patcher machine like you do. Maybe with more practice and of course more patients. Really good video. Steve at Kawartha Leather
Thank you Steve! I had some trouble with mine at first too and I had to make some modifications, but it's minor stuff. I use a #20 needle that I found on eBay from China because most needles for standard sewing machines don't go that high. I sharpened the tip of the needle to a chisel point, as is common on machines made for sewing leather. If you go about a third of the way down on the website attached below you'll see where it says, Leather needle what I mean. If you have a diamond sharpening stone and hold the needle with a small vice-grip you can do this quite easily. The thread is 100% polyester from a company called The Thread Exchange in North Carolina. Also, you've probably noticed that the bobbin has very sharp edges all around. I was breaking thread and I didn't know why, so I filed these sharp edges down (except for the point of course) so when the thread loops around it is less likely to get snagged and severed by these sharp edges. On the swing-out metal plate that covers the bobbin I filed down the metal on either side of the hole just a little so the leather would glide over it a little smoother. Hope this helps. fluffystuffy.wordpress.com

WHO IS THE ARTIST FOR THE MUSIC .PLEASE LET ME KNOW ABOUT IT TO BUY ONE VERY RELAXING MUSIC . I HAVE STILL NOT FORGOTTEN TO ORDER THE WALLET FROM YOU .THANKS
I've done lots of hand stitching, but I never used stitching chisels. I see a lot of videos of people doing this and it looks amazing, but I never got into it myself. I wish I had, and maybe I still will. Thanks for the compliment!
Vegetable tan leather does not contain any oil so you have to add some to keep the leather supple and prevent it from cracking. The oil I use is Neatsfoot oil, but any oil made for leather products will work. Most leather products are made with chromium tanned leather which comes with the oil already in it.
Not really... maybe a little. It's a problem with this kind of machine (and this kind of leather) but you get what you pay for I guess. I'm not into this in a big way otherwise I'd buy something like a Cowboy CB4500 for $3000. The marks don't really bother me but lots of people have expressed a dislike for them.
Thanks Kitajskie, I use 2 different kinds of vegetable tan leather; cowhide and sheepskin. The lighter leather for the inside is the sheepskin. They are both 2.5 oz. thickness. Hope this helps.
Lovely instructive video. I learned a lot. At 20:10 you put a bit of scrap leather under your work in the middle of a cut run before cutting. Can you explain why you did that, please? Interested to learn. An endless student in the U.K. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL EDITING WORK ON THIS VIDEO. You got it just right for my viewing.
It's because there's a gap in the middle of the wallet on the inside (the fold). The scrap brings it up to the level of the surrounding leather so it's cut evenly. :)
I guess I don't know the difference between cowhide and leather. I thought if it's the skin from an animal then it's leather and if there are man-made materials in it like vinyl or polyester then it isn't.
@@wm17959 Genuine leather doesn't just mean that the product is made of real leather (which it is), but it also means it is the lowest quality of all products made out of real leather. Goods marked as genuine leather will be several layers of low-quality leather bonded together with glue and then painted to look uniform.
Thanks Milan. Yes, those marks are a problem, but it's an inexpensive machine and there isn't much that can be done. They don't really bother me because I think it gives it a bit of a rustic look, but it would be nice if they could be avoided. I thought about filing down the teeth on the foot a little bit, but then it might not be able to transport the material, especially if that material were something other than leather, like vinyl. Expensive machines like the Cowboy CB4500 do not have this problem, but they cost over $2000.
Hello Krida, thank you for the compliment! The oil is just neatsfoot oil. You can use any oil recommended for leather because vegetable tan leather does not contain oil, and neatsfoot oil has been used for hundreds of years.

Great craftsmanship. I'm researching leather craft as a hobby and eventually a full time career. This is beautiful. On a side note, I'm in the leather business and if you're interested in purchasing vegetable tanned or chrome tanned leather from India let me know. Cheers!
I really like your work, I am looking for a leather, canvas, sewing machine to use at home, any pointers? O and I like the music, just gotta ask who it is playing, I mean who wouldn't want to work with that kinda music playing in the back ground.
Thanks you! Actually, I added the music later. I don't know who it is, I just found a video on UA-cam of Spanish guitar. The sewing machine I would suggest is called Sailrite Ultrafeed. The one I use is good for small projects but if you're going to get serious you'll want either the Sailrite or if you have a lot of money, the Cowboy 4500.
You can use whatever thread the needle will handle. I bought larger needles for mine but I had to do a bit of digging to find them. This machine uses standard needles as used on a consumer sewing machine, and these needles are hard to find for heavier thread like what I'm using. When I sew a seam where the underside will not be visible I use the plastic thread, but all around the outside I use a 138lb polyester thread on top and bottom. I should mention this machine does not handle thick leather very well but for something like this it works pretty good. You can't expect too much from a machine of this price range, but for hobbyist like myself it's not bad, and a lot faster then sewing by hand. Here's a link to the machine if you're interested. www.ebay.ca/itm/Leather-Sewing-Machine-Manuel-Shoe-Patcher-Singer-Adler-Repair-Cobbler-Antique/132594116949?hash=item1edf39a955:g:60wAAOSwYUBa5CxO:rk:1:pf:0

Well, the leather is only 2.5 oz vegetable tan leather, which is not very thick. the outside piece is cowhide and the lighter coloured inside part are sheepskin (both vegetable tan). Then at the end I apply Neatsfoot oil because raw leather does not have any oil in it. Hope this helps.

What did you apply to the outside of the wallet? And why not apply finish when all parts were separated?I am new to the field of Leather Working, but trying to learn. Thank you. Lead on.
I'm actually learning too. LOL. There are so many tutorial videos and it seems like everyone is doing something different. I use different techniques too depending on what I'm making. The stuff I put on in the end is just pure neatsfoot oil. Some would say that's not really the best thing to use, but it's just a plain oil that soaks in and darkens everything down a bit. I don't put it on before I assemble the parts because when I'm gluing the parts together the glue may not hold if there's oil in the leather. Also, sometimes I like to dampen the parts down a bit before sewing them so the leather is a bit softer, and if the oil in in there it won't absorb the water as well. When I put this stuff on in the end it looks a bit blotchy, but after a day or two it will creep throughout the entire project and look uniform. Hope this helps.
You can use all kinds of finishing products and you have to watch and read what are they and where and how to use and small or more in amount. hola me gusto tu trabajo dime al final que liquido le echaste porfavor gracias y como lo puedo conseguir en peru si no fuera mucha molestia . bendiciones
Hola Daniel. El aceite al final es solo aceite pie nido (neatsfoot oil). Puedes usar cualquier tipo de aceite para el cuero porque el cuero vegetal no tiene aceite.
I thought about doing that, but I really don't like watching those kinds of videos. Maybe I'll just add some text here and there about material and tools. I'll answer any question you have if I can.
Hello. I used 3 different kinds of leather. The darker leather used on the outside and 2 of the pocket is vegetable tan cowhide, 2.5oz thick. The lighter coloured leather for the card pockets is vegetable tan sheepskin, also 2.5oz thick. For the billfold pocket (inside) I used chromium tanned pigskin because it is very thin but also firm. This is to reduce the thickness and over-all bulkiness of the finished product. Since vegetable tan leather has no oil in it you have to put something on, which I do at the end of the video. I applied neatsfoot oil but you can use any kind of oil that is meant to be used on leather. Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Hello Sahid. If you're referring to the cutting matt it's just a cheap one I bought at Walmart, but you can get them at fabric supply places or craft stores.
Yes, it's thick, but I have a tendency to over-design things. I want everything to last forever. And besides, I don't carry my wallet in my pants, I always have it in y jacket.
Hello Mister Smith. At the end I apply a liberal amount of pure neatsfoot oil. The vegetable tan leather has no oil in it so you have to put oil to keep the leather supple. Hope this helps.
Yes, it is a little thick. I haven't experimented with other kinds of leather and I have a tendency to over-design almost everything I make. There is room for improvement.
Hi Striker. Yes, it is a little thick in some places. I wish I could use some thinner leather, but where I live I'm limited to only a few suppliers. But you're right, that would be an improvement.

Hi Jef. Yes, it's a Chinese machine, sometimes called the Able 290. I like the machine, but I had to do some tweaking to get it working perfectly. I modified the bobbin and also sharpened the needle to make it better for leather. It's also not a good machine for sewing thick leather, and on some projects, like this one, where you're sewing through 5 layers of leather and then through 2 layers the lower thread loops will sometimes show because you can't change string tension between the thick and thin sections.

They're made in China and have no plastic parts at all, and are not very expensive either. I had to do a bit of tweaking on mine to make sewing in leather a little easier. Hope this helps.
hello sir, i really enjoyed this video. excuse me but is it possible for you to tell me what size of needle and size and type of thread you used? i got my self one of these handcranck sewing machines for my leather work but I'm limited on knowledge of how to master this machine the way you do. any help from you would be really appreciated. Thank You, Daniel Rivera
Hello Daniel. The machine takes a standard needle, as in any consumer sewing machine, and it is a size 20. I had some trouble finding these needles at local sewing stores because they don't carry ones that big. Ordinarily a commercial machine would be used for this thread this size but those machines have a different style of needle. I ended up buying them from China on eBay and it worked out well. When I got them I modified the point of the needle on a sharpening stone to make it more effective for sewing leather. I have attached a link of a website showing this kind of needle (near the bottom of the page). Also, when I got the machine there were almost no instructional videos on UA-cam showing how to use it or service it, but now there are many such video. One thing I haven't seen anyone do, and it's something I would recommend, is rounding off the corners on the bobbins. The metal bobbins are driven in a circular motion on what's called a shuttle carrier - the little thing with a gear on the bottom under the bobbin. The thread must pass around the bobbin with each stitch. You'll noticed the edges of the bobbin are kind of sharp because these machines are somewhat crudely made, and at first I had a lot of trouble with thread breaking. For leather sewing the thread has to be somewhat tighter than normal fabric sewing, and I think what was happening is when it looped around the bobbin that sharp edge would sever the thread. So I took a small metal file and went all around the bobbin and rounded off that sharp edge, and I haven't had a problem since. If you do this remember not to round off the sharp point on the bobbin, just the body part of it. I should also mention that if you ever remove the shuttle carrier it is very important that it goes back in correctly or the machine will not work. If you have questions about this just contact me. The thread I use is 92 lb and 138 lb. Mostly I use the 92 but the final stitch around the outside of the wallet I did in the 138. Normally I use a clear nylon thread that looks like fishing line in the bobbin, But when I'm sewing something where both sides of the stitch will be visible I use the 138 thread in the bobbin as well. Getting this to work might mean experimenting with which hole in the bobbin to feed the thread through and also moving that tensioner spring on the bobbin up or down. It's important to get just the right amount of tension on the thread as it pulls out of the bobbin. This is harder to adjust than adjusting the tension adjusting screw for the upper thread. If you ever need parts for this machine you can contact a company in Australia through their Facebook page called Able 290. I have ordered parts from them and they can also answer questions you have. I ordered the thread from a company called The Thread Exchange in North Carolina. I use only nylon thread. Hope this helps.

Great craftsmanship! I'm not going to lie. I was so sad to see the use of a sewing machine though!
I've done lots of hand stitching, but I never used stitching chisels. I see a lot of videos of people doing this and it looks amazing, but I never got into it myself. I wish I had, and maybe I still will. Thanks for the compliment!

Beautiful wallet nice job. I would love to have one of those.❤❤
Thank you. I appreciate it!
what's the liquid that your applying to the leather and what it is for?
Vegetable tan leather does not contain any oil so you have to add some to keep the leather supple and prevent it from cracking. The oil I use is Neatsfoot oil, but any oil made for leather products will work. Most leather products are made with chromium tanned leather which comes with the oil already in it.
Do those big marks left by the sewing machine ever go away?
Not really... maybe a little. It's a problem with this kind of machine (and this kind of leather) but you get what you pay for I guess. I'm not into this in a big way otherwise I'd buy something like a Cowboy CB4500 for $3000. The marks don't really bother me but lots of people have expressed a dislike for them.
beautiful craftsmanship, sturdy construction, good fit and finish, and well designed, i am impressed and thank you for allowing me to watch
Thank you!
super, and what is the thickness of the skin that you used?
Thanks Kitajskie, I use 2 different kinds of vegetable tan leather; cowhide and sheepskin. The lighter leather for the inside is the sheepskin. They are both 2.5 oz. thickness. Hope this helps.
@@wm17959 Thanks
Lovely instructive video. I learned a lot. At 20:10 you put a bit of scrap leather under your work in the middle of a cut run before cutting. Can you explain why you did that, please? Interested to learn. An endless student in the U.K. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL EDITING WORK ON THIS VIDEO. You got it just right for my viewing.
It's because there's a gap in the middle of the wallet on the inside (the fold). The scrap brings it up to the level of the surrounding leather so it's cut evenly. :)
If you are using 100% cowhide, I wouldn't label your merchandise "Genuine leather" if I were you.
@@chrisapattee I wasn't aware of this. Thank you.

Very nice. I just don't like the marks left by the walking foot. Seems like something could be done to eliminate that?
Thanks Milan. Yes, those marks are a problem, but it's an inexpensive machine and there isn't much that can be done. They don't really bother me because I think it gives it a bit of a rustic look, but it would be nice if they could be avoided. I thought about filing down the teeth on the foot a little bit, but then it might not be able to transport the material, especially if that material were something other than leather, like vinyl. Expensive machines like the Cowboy CB4500 do not have this problem, but they cost over $2000.
@@wm17959 perhaps you could glue a thin piece of suede to the sole of the foot. It might have enough grip to work, and is removable if it doesn't
@@milanradak269 Yes, that might work. I even thought of putting a few thin strips of duct tape. Thanks for the suggestion!

great work. What oil is that ?
Hi, may i know what oil that you used on finishing ? That's make perfect looking . Love it
Hello Krida, thank you for the compliment! The oil is just neatsfoot oil. You can use any oil recommended for leather because vegetable tan leather does not contain oil, and neatsfoot oil has been used for hundreds of years.

I have just had a look at the sewing machine you are using,do you have to use it with the plastic cord or can you use any thread

What kind of sewing machine is that, that things amazing
Hey Bryan. These machines are not expensive, but mine took a bit of tweaking to get it working smoothly. That tripod stand is useless so I made the wooden base, and a few other minor things. See eBay link below.

May i ask what you did to make the spine so supple?
Well, the leather is only 2.5 oz vegetable tan leather, which is not very thick. the outside piece is cowhide and the lighter coloured inside part are sheepskin (both vegetable tan). Then at the end I apply Neatsfoot oil because raw leather does not have any oil in it. Hope this helps.

Hi Jim. I have made a number of wallets for people since I published the video even though I'm not actually in the wallet making business. I charge $130 Canadian so if you're interested please contact me at wm17959(a)hotmail.com.
Hope this helps.

you marked it genuine leather ?? looked like you where using full grain at the begining.
You are correct, it is full grain leather. I guess I think of 'genuine' as anything that is not synthetic or man-made.
Very cool design. I never saw that design of wallet before. Enjoyed your video. I learned a few things. Thank you.
Thank you, and I can't take credit for the design, I just changed it a little bit.
What kind of leather is??

Hello Mister Smith. At the end I apply a liberal amount of pure neatsfoot oil. The vegetable tan leather has no oil in it so you have to put oil to keep the leather supple. Hope this helps.

Nice sewing machine! Wallet seems kind of thick for just having 2 credit card slots and a bill holder slot
Yes, it is a little thick. I haven't experimented with other kinds of leather and I have a tendency to over-design almost everything I make. There is room for improvement.
Looks kinda thick. Ever try this but with 2/3oz leather?
Hi Striker. Yes, it is a little thick in some places. I wish I could use some thinner leather, but where I live I'm limited to only a few suppliers. But you're right, that would be an improvement.

I modified the bobbin and also sharpened the needle to make it better for leather. It's also not a good machine for sewing thick leather, and on some projects, like this one, where you're sewing through 5 layers of leather and then through 2 layers the lower thread loops will sometimes show because you can't change string tension between the thick and thin sections.

hello sir, i really enjoyed this video. excuse me but is it possible for you to tell me what size of needle and size and type of thread you used? i got my self one of these handcranck sewing machines for my leather work but I'm limited on knowledge of how to master this machine the way you do. any help from you would be really appreciated.
Thank You sir i really appreciate it
is that milled vegetable tanned leather and what thickness, looks lovely soft leather
Sorry, I don't know what 'milled' means. I buy it at Tandy Leather in Canada. It's the higher grade vegetable tan leather they sell, 1.5 - 2.5 oz. The lighter coloured leather is vegetable tanned sheepskin, also 1.5 - 2.5 oz. Hope this helps.
I like the desing.
I wish I could take credit for it. I borrowed it from the Brian Oltrogge wallet video.
man that's a lot of oil you're slathering on there,
LOL! Yea, but vegetable tan leather doesn't have any oil in it so you have to put enough to make it supple. All the oil gets soaked up by the leather.
Yeah, I get that. I'm a leatherworker myself. It's just I'm used to multiple thin layers. You get to the same place. It was just kinda surprising to see is all. Not judging....
Nice craft! Also, very special sewing machine for leather works. Could please share where to buy it? What is the brand name? Thanks!
Hello Yo. The only brand name I know if is Able 290, but it is not often sold under that name. If you go on eBay and type in 'Chinese shoe patch sewing machine' you'll probably find one. They sell for around $250 new. I think there is only one company in China that makes them and there are no plastic parts on them at all. They are not ideal for heavy leather, but for things like this they work well.
Thank you so much for sharing. I will try to find it out. Have a nice day!😉
What are you using to paint wallet and how thick leather is?
I'm using mostly vegetable tan cowhide and vegetable tan sheepskin, both 1.5 - 2.5 oz thick. In the end I just apply neatsfoot oil
I'm not experienced with your measurement.Looks to me,it is about 1mm.
I think you are correct. The thickness varies slitty. I went to the Tandy website but I could not find the vegetable tan cowhide, only the sheepskin: www.tandyleather.com/en/product/natural-veg-sheepskin
Всё хорошо, но след от лапки швейной машинки остался. Я бы прошил вручную.
да. Этого нельзя избежать с помощью этой машины.
You are a tremendous & wonderfully skilled artist sir! That's more than just "Leon's" wallet.....it is a heartfelt work of superior craftsmanship!
That's very kind of you, thank you!
Can i contact you in whatsapp?
