The Redditors seem angry (as usual) that this wallet isn't for sale for $50. There's about $50 in materials in it so what's my time worth? Nothing? There is a lot of work involved in an item like this which isn't conveyed by a short video when it's edited down, they take a long time to make.
***** I have to say I love how you combine great music but also include the working sounds of you producing your wallet :) it makes it very enjoyable to watch. This is a high quality product and the price should reflect this, its a world market (I am in Australia) price the items to reflect the quality, you wont attract the market segment that wants a cheap product but you will attract those who want a premium product :)
***** Great job Ian! Very nice! When I first started watching your video, I was thinking to myself "awesome, another great video from Ian showing how I can start making wallets and selling them!" Then I watched the video - way too much labor for me! :) I didn't see what you're charging for the wallets, but I'm sure it's a fair price. My nemesis (a local maker that always seems to start making something I had been planning on making, but haven't gotten around to it yet) charges $115 for a bi-fold wallet, un-lined, machine sewn, with exposed edges. Much less work, but he seems to sell a lot of them. Videos like this are precisely what is needed to convey to customers exactly what it takes to build a quality product. I did a similar thing when I first started selling leather holsters. Customers watched my video and eventually decided it took too many tools and way too much time to build it themselves, so they hired me to build one for them. Very cool use of the little woodworking plane to skive the edges. I will have to try that! And the little edge scraper to rough up the grain side - super cool!
A machine will produce quantity. A man will produce quality. Masterwork, very solid i like your videos man keep em comin. Handmade wallet would cost fortune here in Germany
While I prefer my wallet to have burnished edges and to be unlined, that all preference and doesn't reflect how wonderful this piece is. I respect when people can create something so lovely and you can tell how much time and care went into making this. I applaud you, your skill set, and for sharing it with others. Keep up the great work!
***** Thats awesome. You have a really serious setup so I'm not surprised. The stacked leather after burnishing reminds me of a closed book. Its a little detail that generates a nice feeling. Thats what its all about right?
What can one say ? Except the whole thing is fabulous, the tuition, craftsmanship, the expertise and the video filming, just right. It is a credit to you and grateful thanks for sharing it with us !!
Hello Mr. Atkinson, I've watched this video 2 yrs ago while drinking beer, and that night I've decided to learn leathercraft as a hobby. Today, I make wallets during my days off and I earn extra money from those. Thank you for this inspiration.
so beautiful , handmade wallets rocks ,they can stay with you for ages ,my grandfather gave me his handmade leather wallet that he bought in the 1940s from Italy ,the leather looks so vintage and it looks very new from the inside ,i use it everyday , the thing is that some people doesn't understand that the materials that are used in these things are high quality materials and that this kind of things will stay with you forever ! i bought many cheap wallets ,they last for a month then the whole wallet starts to fall apart ! thanks for the video ,you are very talented ! and i love the music in this video !
Didn't understand what you were doing half the time, but sure was fun to watch. That fold-it-over thing was sure clever. And that device that held your work while you stitched - great idea. Nice calming music. I will never have the patience to try this. Excellent work.
Incredible craftsmanship. I think sometimes the work that goes into this kind of stuff is pretty under appreciated. At least I know I used to overlook the amount of time and skills needed to make sheaths and wallets like the ones you make. Really cool stuff.
I have been seeing your videos for a few years and I am very very impressed over how far you've come. I hope you can make a decent living off your craft because you certainly deserve it.
Beautiful workmanship! I immediately checked out the etsy web-store... VERY reasonable prices ! Now I know what I'm getting my wife for Christmas! You just earned a customer!
one thing I want to say, you have a lot of practical tools, even some of them made by your self. The wood edge folder is very useful, will make one by myself.
Congratulations Ian for your craftmanship !receive my telepathic hug from Acapulco,México by myself an avid rumanian violin player in Acapulco orquestra fascinated always by leathers craftsmanship !
Absolutely worth the money in my opinion, people are only mad that they cant afford such a lovely piece. will be purchasing soon! keep up the good work
quality vs quantity. Very well done. You are a true leather craftsman. I would gladly pay for one of your quality wallets, knowing that it won't fall apart in a year. Thanks for sharing .
Great choice of music. Incredibly long process, you do beautiful work Ian! I wonder if leather workers ever even make minimum wage of the projects they make. You’re an inspiration to us all.
Enjoyable to watch as always. When my enthusiasm wavers with some of my leatherwork your videos help, its good to see how others craft their goods, pinching a couple of observed techniques also hehe. Great work!
A brilliant display of excellent craftsmanship enhanced by the music played during the synchronized swimming scene from the film, "Caddyshack." Well done, sir!
that was incredible. it must have taken days. I only just started today and it took me about 5 hours just learning to do basic pattern cutting, stamping and use of dye... and that was just a little precut drink coaster! more than anything, I want to thank you. I definitely picks up on a few things watching this.
many people are not used to the quality of hand made product , they feel if they purchase something for 20 bucks that was made in a china sweat shop they made a good deal and if it lasts a couple years before it falls apart they just spend the 25 dollars and purchase the same on so out of 20 year spent 200 or more dollars on wallets instead of one that would last them a life time , this is the mentality of most it a throw away world . up till a couple years ago i still had my grandfathers wallet that was made for him by a leather crafter ,this was made back in 1961 and after I came in to possession of it threw my time I had to re-lace it twice any good hand made leather wallet is worth 100 to 200 bucks compared to that you purchase in wall mart or K-Mart ,, your wallet what you have invested easy 125.00 or better and I am not insulting you one bit , nice wallet ,
Another amazing piece of craftsmanship Ian. Well done. I know the massive effort it takes to do great quality and the patience that you need to exercise in order to not cut any corners that no-one will ever notice. Your work is really inspirational and extremely informative. And you designs are so clean and classic. Lovely work mate ;)
i love nice wallets. and i can say the price on the shop is quite cheap actually for the quality and precision used to make this. i will buy it for even 200 usd. great work mate.
Se avessi anch'io tutti quei marchingegni, avrei meno pensieri per come realizzare uno qualsiasi dei progetti che faccio. Complimenti per la maestria 👍
I'm a first time viewer to your channel and must say you do amazing work ,when I buy a wallet I always look at the quality that goes into making it im 44 and have owned only 4 wallets and from what ive seen so far I would not think twice about buying one of yours .
Thanks for sharing this wonderful how-to/tutorial. It's obvious that no everyone can afford such a high quality wallet, but the prices seem quite reasonable based on the work involved.
I don't know how I stumbled here, but I'm glad I did, it was interesting to see the process and how much care and detail went into it. Yes, your wallets might be considered expensive, but anything of quality is.
If you would like to buy patterns from me to make your own leather wallets please visit my shop here www.etsy.com/shop/LeodisLeather?section_id=15216140
Hi Ian, Just getting started in the hobby and your tutorials are simply fantastic. Do you have the pattern for the lined wallet for sale as well as the unlined ones on your Etsy site. I'd like to make one for my dad.
This is Real craftmanship! I mean Who the hell would want to buy one of those carbonfiber, bluetooth tin cans to store your money in, rather a really good quallity leather wallet! Great Job btw and an awsome video!
Excellent work Ian .. thank you for posting this was very interesting process. Cant beat things that are made by a skilled craftsman. Excellent wallet.
Really enjoy watching these being made. I can see you really put time and love into your pieces... Please don't think I am trying to detract from your skill, but one tiny change I would have made is the fold on the corner... I know it adds extra time, and a huge amount of faff... but the corners look so much better in my opinion if they are pleated rather than cut square. Please please don't take this as anything other than a comment. I love your folding machine too!

***** Don't worry, it is painfully obvious how much effort goes into each of these. The quality of your products shines through.
***** I have to say I love how you combine great music but also include the working sounds of you producing your wallet :) it makes it very enjoyable to watch. opensprit The price of everything, the value of nothing. That's all they know. Brilliant work, Ian.

Watching this makes it seem that this kind of thing is very calming and almost meditative to do.
"Poor man's folding machine," classic. Thanks for these videos, it is a pleasure to watch and the music is always a treat.
