While it's a beautiful wallet and I enjoy his videos, I do find the click-baity-ness a bit misleading and annoying. The material cost of this wallet is much higher than $71. To say that is a $35 piece of gator belly is absurd. It's the prime section of an exotic hide. That's like buying a side of beef and saying the cost of an 8oz filet is $2.50.
@@DeadbeatChild I understand what ur saying but I don't think ur looking at it the correct way. If you do buy a side if beef that costs say $1000. You have to look at it as how many filets, etc can I get out of it and how much can I charge. Then you divide it by that and come up with a price. I don't know but I think that's what he did. He took the hide, divided it up seeing how many wallets he could make from it and came up with a price. It's the same with anything you buy in bulk. I do it making wood projects when I buy a nice piece of black walnut or another exotic wood. Either way, it just shows, if he used the same materials, how overpriced all the big designer names are.
@@chrisdemeglio7983 Fair point. I'll elaborate. He says he's purchasing the exact materials as Hermes, but I am not sure--if they are purchasing grade I, the cost will be higher. Even at ii/iii a hide like that is still going to run 350 dollars minimum. Also, he does not cut the pattern in the same orientation as Hermes which would be lengthwise, and for optimal symmetry--you could only get a single wallet out of a hide like that (edit:looked through some examples--they all feature the umbilical scar, confirming one wallet per hide. If you wanted to buy this single piece on its own, they're gonna charge a fortune because you're basically stripping the hide of its primary anti-counterfeit mark). I’d use it too. But it’s not Hermes. It’s a glorious Home made wallet. Now go buy the Hermes and do a resiliency test. Let’s see which one falls apart sooner lol
Gotta take into account marketing, real estate, overhead, profit margins, sales, and number of people buying it. But yes markup is probably 10-15 times the pure manufacturing costs
@@thieney yea that's true, when you buy everything to start a company or brand and make a product, even it costs $200 to make, say an iPhone 10 you still have an overhead and need to adjust price to market value and cover all costs of continued manufacturing while getting a return on the investment and then profit. The new Toyota Supra is a very good example, but for brands like coach there is some pricing due to name only.
The flaw in these kinds of videos is the fact that they don't consider the time it takes them to do it, because they're making them for themselves so their time is "free", but in a company it's not like the people work for free, so if $70 is how much the material itself is worth that's not the total amount of money a company spends. Using some random numbers, let's say that a Hermes employee in France costs €5000 a month on average, so $5600, and let's say that those people work 22 days per month on average, that's a daily cost of $250 per employee, plus shipment costs, the maintenance costs of the factory, property taxes, VAT etc etc, and a company has to make a profit so hundreds of dollars may be a fair price, maybe not $5000 but $70 is not the complete picture for sure. The quality matters as well, I'm not an expert of high quality wallets so I can't really tell whether this one was rushed or if it was the same quality as the $5000 one tbh

@@looeegee It's not a rip off to the people that buy the products. Hermes compared to some other luxury houses is more focussed on preserving the art of incredibly high-end craftsmanship, of course the products have very high mark-ups, not arguing that, but there is something entirely unique about the products that they make, and the quality of customer service they provide. This wallet was an excellent attempt but is by no standard the equivalent of an Hermes one. Many people in the comments are so offended by the price of their products that they fail to understand or acknowledge the value of what the brand actually does
I can appreciate that the cost of the materials was clearly less than the price of the product it was made from. Having said that, the hours of craftsmanship in this, the attention to detail, and the quality of a product made by hand....I think it's worth at least $1,000 minimum 👌🏻
Frankly i can get the same wallet (nearly the same quality) from a craftman in the town for 150$. It can be up to 400$ if he's well-known, but this does not look like a $1000 wallet.
They employ thousands of people over the globe and cost of building and running these operations is where the cost goes, it doesn’t make them “ cheaper” , you have to feed and house the animals providing the hide and they also reject a lot of skins that don’t meet the standard which also costs money.

You know what else is "weirdly relaxing"? Making your own stuff. It's not only relaxing though. It feels like you achieved something that you can actually feel, use and be proud of. It's like meditating, especially once you have a groove when working with something in particular, like wood, steel or textiles or anything else you want. I feel like, the more electronic our world gets, the more people forget that you can actually create something that will last generations, that's not made with or only works with electricity. Oh, I could go on and on about this topic, but I think you get what I mean :-)
KS Donald The quality of the craftsmanship for the Hermes wallet is far superior too. The leather’s far better thanks to Hermes buying out the best leather tanneries so that they can control the quality of the leather that they use. If the guy making the wallet in this video was that skilled, he would already be making in a workshop for Hermes or producing his own high end bespoke leather products, but he isn’t. Literally clickbait like you said and very misleading. It’s unfortunate that people can’t critically think or bother to do some research before saying something ignorant on the internet. The comments here drive me nuts because we have the internet in this day and age, yet people would rather run their mouths than take a few seconds to not look ignorant. And yes, I agree with what you’ve said. An Hermes wallet is going to last far longer, feel soft yet be durable at the same time, and be a lot thinner. It’s literally superior in every way.
Steamed Carbs until you made alot of mistakes by wasting alot of leather materials + bad stichings. That’s the way to appreciate designer brand’s leather goods... By making your own leather goods 😂
It really isn't as complicated as you might think. Go on eBay or Amazon and you can buy some moderately priced sets to see if you like the craft. Patterns can be gotten for free on quite a few sites. Keep watching this guy's videos and you're on your way. He's very good.
It hars cuz these comments are kids or teens with no credit cards or paypal so its a struggle to buy things. Compared to man who works has money and has a credit card and can buy these easily. It's not as easy actually.
I have a group on Facebook that’s only about skin, I will post a link to this video for sure. I live in Sweden so we mainly discuss home tanning, rabbit, reindeer and cow skins, I’ve even seen people tanning mice, snakes and foxes. This will be a great idea to add to my group. Thanks 🙏🏻

Also need to take into account cost of tools. And cost of gaining all that skill and knowledge to make one.
That and u believing its not made second hand from china
its actually just a status symbol like gucci apple versace
If the Hermes is made in this way, worth 5000$
I'd prefer $5000 in a $70 wallet rather than $70 in a $5000 wallet.
I'd prefer $5060 in a $10 wallet
I'd prefer a living alligator than a mother fucking $5000 or $70 fucking wallet...........
Smdh 🤪🤔 I will have to carry around $ 30,000 if I got $5,000 wallet
i have $70 and no wallet
I'd prefer 5000$ in a 5000$ wallet
Plot twist: He makes the wallets for Hermes and this is him just making another one but don't put the logo on it.
Oskar Pettersson I doubt it... And I doubt Hermes makes them by hand... But u never know
You pay for the name.
@@xxkarlosxxxxxx7233 Hermes makes their products entirely by hand. They have videos on their youtube page showing the process
@@t.m.a385 so they show how they are ripping you off, nice.
Having said that, the hours of craftsmanship in this, the attention to detail, and the quality of a product made by hand....I think it's worth at least $1,000 minimum 👌🏻
yup. the knowledge also pricey
Frankly i can get the same wallet (nearly the same quality) from a craftman in the town for 150$. It can be up to 400$ if he's well-known, but this does not look like a $1000 wallet.
People don't buy Hermes for quality, they buy because it's expensive and they can afford it
@Aaron Orrell .. Very on point bro .. When u factor in his time, skill, materials etc .. It is worth at least $1000 .. Good point bro
@@KwonSori Exactly. It's why I buy and support from a skilled independent craftsman who owns their brand, rather than a big corporation.
Time invested in learning and applying the skills necessary to create such a beautiful billfold: priceless.
Not priceless. People have salaries for a reason lmfao
according to the title the time taken to learn how to do this and actually do it costs nothing
Now add that Hermes buys these materials in huge quantities and has certian deals with other companies making the price of materials even lower.
Dude Hermes is 100% integrated, they don't even buy the crocodiles, they OWN them.
@@bradbitt8007 all I can think about is a French guy with a mustache wrestling an aligator XD
@@bradbitt8007 ok ? everything is cheaper when you do it yourself duh. you can go and make yourself expensive furniture for cheap go ahead tho
They employ thousands of people over the globe and cost of building and running these operations is where the cost goes, it doesn’t make them “ cheaper” , you have to feed and house the animals providing the hide and they also reject a lot of skins that don’t meet the standard which also costs money.

Absolutely. This platform at it's best.
You’re a freakin artist. Very satisfying to watch. I could smell the leather from here.
If we include his craftsmanship and labor, and not to mention his effort to source all his materials and cost of all his tools ....$500??
This feels like that Toy Story scene where Woody gets repainted and repaired.
asmr???
I thought exactly the same!😂
Lol
Took the words right out of my mouth. He should have played that music over it 😂
Haha. Was thinking same
so glad this didn't start with a "hEy wHaT's uP gUYs"

This is so nice and relaxing. Makes me want to make wallets for a living
If I could find the people that would pay $5000 for them I'd be doin it every day all day, where for art thou stupid rich people?
bipedalbob Yeah, one wallet a day is sufficient for me.
Hahaha I too had the same feeling for a moment...good craftsmanship isn't it?

You make it look so easy! Beautiful.
i think this openned a new chapter in my life. I can see myself 5 years from now doing the exact same thing. I just wanna say you inspired me for life right there man, really. Thanks you

There is something strange about watching people make things. Its weirdly relaxing.
You are right. When I am nervous, I look for colours and paper and paint. So relaxing.
its called asmr
yes. i love watching such stuff. 1000 thanks for the video.
@@adams1625 where do you expect me to find a leather workshop and croc skin?

My wallet was $2 but it's empty
@KS Donald Imagine being KS Donald
KS Donald ok boomer
Why this on my recommendation?
Nice craftmanship skills
same hahaha
People can pay to their videos get recommended. Also, youtube dont recommend wideos that arent monetized
The technique with the chisel has my mind blown 🤯. Incredibly talented!

It really isn't as complicated as you might think. Go on eBay or Amazon and you can buy some moderately priced sets to see if you like the craft. Patterns can be gotten for free on quite a few sites. Keep watching this guy's videos and you're on your way. He's very good.
