- This video will walk you through the CFI PTS Area of Operation I, Task C, The Teaching Process. You will learn about the different techniques involved in working with students and how to use more than one method to make the best learning experience possible for them.
For a more complete guide to the CFI practical exam, try my book. It is filled with detailed information about FOI's, regulations, and endorsements. It is written from the examiner's perspective, as well as a veteran CFI and an active student.

Todd is the GOAT. I have the AIH and the PTS out during these lessons. Getting the same feeling as a high level college lecture.
Hey Todd wanted to let you know your videos are such an exemplary example of how pilots help other pilots understand our field. You come from a human perspective and make all of this easily digestible and minimize the intimidation that comes with this checkride. Thank you sir.
These videos are a gold mine of information. Thank you Todd for all the time and effort you have put into these FOI videos!

Appreciate your insight! Continue to educate and share! Love your work, your the man Todd 🤙💯✈
Just started my FOI ground. These videos are a lot of help. Thanks a lot !
My pleasure!
I love this guy the way he explains. These videos are helping me a lot. Thank you Todd ❤️
Todd these videos are so great! Being released at such a perfect time for me personally as Im just beginning my CFI journey. These are really helping with wrapping my head around the FOIs. Thank you!
If there is anything that you are having issues with, don't hesitate to reach out to me!
In the development of organizing material a good acronym/ acrostic that helps me remember is PKSM or p/k school matters.
However, just throwing a comment down to to thank you for doing all that you do Mr. Shellnutt. Your videos have helped me to push through the anxiety of becoming an instructor. Keep Calm and Fly On. Cheers
Thank you so much for these videos. Im doing my CFI initial and your videos help alot with my FOIs .
this was an amazing video. Used it to write a bunch of notes for my lesson plan. New subscriber here for sure
Welcome to the channel, and please reach out to me if you need any assistance. Or have special request videos.
Hey Todd, thanks for these videos. As many have pointed out they are great. Since the letters need to stay in order I came up with a mnemonic (acrostic) for the preparation of a lesson. I'm going with One Elephant Eats Insane Sums of Calories.
Very professional, I love it :)
Can we please just get a supercut of Todd Shellnutt outtakes and bloopers?! 🤣😂
Mr Shellnutt, much appreciation for what you do and how you do it. I'm genuinely interested in listening to how you teach and hope to take some of what I learn from you to my students when/if I become a CFI. Thank you!
Thanks! You WILL be a CFI, if that's what you want. It's only a matter of time.
Thank you!
I wanted to add more time stamps for those following along with the PTS:
Preparation of a lesson (starts on the lesson objectives Tab)
Guided Discussion Method: 1:05:00
E-learning (computer based learning): 1:08:00
Demonstration performance method: 1:12:00
Drill and practice method: 1:16:00
Problem Based Learning: 1:16:55
Instruction Aids/Training Tech: 1:18:36
Thank you so much for these videos. I heard really good things about you when I went to CFI. Too bad these videos were not available back then, things would have been a lot of different for me lol.
Thanks for the Kudos!! Hopefully these will help for your CFI renewal!
Thank you so much Todd for presenting this! I think the audio quality on the Yeti was better; as a Yeti user myself.
Here’s what I use as an acrostic for OEE ISC:
On Every Emergency I Summon Checklists.
I hope this helps!
Love it!
Hey Todd, once again thank you for this video and this series. It is insanely helpful in tackling the seemingly overwhelming amount of information.
With that being said, would you recommend showing up to a check-ride with lesson plans made for each task of the FOI objectives? I have heard and seen different things about DPEs either being okay with notes for the FOI section or not allowing any resources at all.
Hello! I would say yes, only because the PTS/ACS states that you have to demonstrate the ability to use a lesson plan in the checkride. DPE's are so different and each may have their own spin on how to evaluate a potential CFI applicant, but you would never present this information to a student of yours without a lesson plan (when you become a 2-Year CFI, of course.) Be sure to reach out to your DPE prior and see if they have any issues with you using lesson plans for the FOIs. That would be the easiest plan.
@@ToddShellnuttCPC thank you! I will make sure to reach out to the DPE and check. Also, are planning on making a video about the switch from PTS to ACS for the CFI?
@@rennitrl5985 Good deal. I rarely post to UA-cam nowadays, but you can checkout my Patreon page for content like that. www.patreon.com/toddshellnutt
I have a dumb mnemonic to remember Lesson Plan OEEISC: "Oscar Eats Everything In Santa Clara." (I think I remember hearing that the dumber or more absurd the mnemonic the more memorable it can be haha.)
Anyways thanks for making this video Todd- really appreciate your clarity with how you teach these topics. These vids have really been helping me study to become a quality, thorough CFI.
I think that is a wonderful mnemonic!
Is this preflight powerpoint on your patreon? Its an excellent idea and a great point.
Like the bloopers!
Im 2 years late but this guy is an absolute clown in the best way possible. Sitting through all this information then seeing the end honestly made it, thank you Todd!
My pleasure!
Hey Todd, I have a question. In the PTS for training deliver methods (#3) there are only 5 items listed below that (LGCDD). Is it safe to assume that those are the only items I am expected to mention during my CFI oral even though there are additional ones in the AIH?
Those items listed in the longer acronym are subtopics of the short one, so I would highly recommend that you go with that one if you want to have all of the information for the practical exam.
Are FOI areas strictly from memory during your CFI ride, or what format is used during this oral portion?
so the syllabus/course that we create is the framework of how where and when we are going to present the information? The syllabus is the roadmap? whereas the lesson plans are the guts or the content of each area/subject matter? Where does the ACS come into all of this???
It’i cant follow along with the PTS , what pts are you using for this lesson , probably i am using the old one idk
www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/test_standards/media/faa-s-8081-6d.pdf
Can u and if so, what can you do as a CFI, cfii, mei without a medical?
You can give flight training, flight reviews, IPC's, and any other activities that do no require to act as PIC!
at 18:00 shouldnt we have the completion standard or objective be safely operate an airplane instead of just pass a checkride?
Of course, please note my comment at 17:35 where I talk about how I’m dumbing this down to the most basic levels. I would never recommend that someone just be trained enough to pass a check ride. The comment before that where I also stated that they must meet all the standards does cover all of the safely operating an airplane measures.
So is this based off of the old 9a version?I can’t follow along with the 8083-9b version.
This information is based off the most current flight instructor PTS, it is not based off the most current flight instructor handbook.
How does a lesson plan differ from the Syllabus???? How do you integrate your lesson plans with your syllabus? How do you link them? What role does the ACS play? How is the ACS integrated with the lesson plans and the syllabus so all three work/compliment each other??
A syllabus is a document that outlines the course content, objectives, and policies. It is typically provided to students at the beginning of the course. A lesson plan is a more detailed document outlining specific activities and learning objectives for a single class period. It is typically created by the teacher and used to guide the class. Both syllabi and lesson plans are essential tools for effective teaching and learning. Syllabuses provide students with a roadmap for the course, while lesson plans help teachers stay on track and ensure that all learning objectives are met. Hope this helps.
This is great material, but please take out the fluff and don't be afraid to speed it up. Thank you.
