    Simone, I’ve had a brain tumor since I was six and I’m now twenty six. Mine is a Pilocytic Astrocytoma. It wasn’t supposed to come back after surgery and it did, it also wasn’t supposed to spread and it did. Brain tumors are jerks and don’t listen to the rules about what they’re not supposed to do. I got through all of it though and so will you! I’m a Computer Scientist now and have written a few bots myself! I love your videos and your can do attitude. Keep that up! Laugh when you feel like the whole thing is funny and cry when it just sucks. In the end you will get through it all. Bye Brian, time time to get out

      I had a pilocytic astrocytoma in my spine, and mine came back too. It sucked but now it’s gone! Two surgeries and chemo wasn’t fun, but it wasn’t all bad, and I’ve gained a lot of insight, experience, and friends along the way.

    • @tennenrishin
      @tennenrishin 6 років тому +1

      My 3yo son has a partially resected spinal cord Pilocytic Astrocytoma near his brain stem. He will probably have to go for another surgery sometime. If any of those insights you've gained might help me make his life better, please share.

      tennenrishin one of the best things I’ve experienced because of cancer is Camp Quality. It’s a program for kids with cancer and their siblings. It provides love, support, a new family, and once he turns four, a week of camp where he can have as much fun as he is able to. I met so many people who I could share my experiences with and learn from, and I bet you could too, even if you’re not from the US. My surgeon was Dr. George Jallo of Johns Hopkins, and he is absolutely incredible. If you would like to talk more personally about this, my email is jilliankfry9@me.com. I wish you and your son the best ❤️

      Queen Concquer mine came back within a year, was removed again, came back, and then chemo finished it off. It all happened within a span of three years about 6 years ago. I haven’t had it come back since. I get yearly MRIs to make sure, but all has been quiet for years.

    My grandfather had a non-cancerous tumor in his head located behind his nose between his eyes. He had to do the same type of radiation treatment that you are preparing for and he came out the other side 99% tumor free. He did lose hair in his nose and in a corresponding spot on the back of his head, but that grew back later. He also got this when he was in his 70's, and in the average shape of a 70 year old.
    Before anybody asks how he is doing now, he died a few years ago. Not from any complications related to the tumor or the treatment, but because he was 97 years old.
    So I hope that this treatment goes as well for you as it did for him, and that you too can live well into your 90's or more!

Mine was wrapped around my pituitary and optic nerves (Craniopharyngioma). 2 surgeries removed it, but similarly, left bits behind. 4 years later it was back. Another surgery, followed by radiation therapy, and I"ve been tumorless for 20 years. I hope everything goes just as well for you, SImone. awh no simone!! i had radiotherapy on my brain for a tumour as well, you dont feel anything during the radiation, it does make you tired and you will probably loose a bit of hair but its all temporary! you'll feel so much better afterwards. just to warn you, i found that there was a funny smell when I had mine? like when the radiation was on there was a weird like strong chlorine smell? we all love you simone, you have such a great fan base to support you as well as friends and family. Its 6 years this year since I had mine, when I was 13/14 (in hospital having radiotherapy on my 14th birthday). Chin up Simone!!

      I actually smiled and my first thought was - we Europeans just simply rock \m/
      I am Austrian with Eastern European roots and live in the UK - my dark humor, sarkasm and for most native English speakers my comments are simply... how should I say it, not PC.
      But any European I meet, they fine with it and actually, the only native English speakers who don't react in shock are Australians.
      I know British, Americans and Canadians - and they don't get my sarcasm or "dark" jokes.
      I can sit in a meeting, make a sarcastic remark, and the only people smiling are the Dutch and the French from the other teams.
      This is/was her way to deal with it (considering it's over a year old this video and your post).

    First, let me say that my mother went through the same radiation treatment you're starting when she was 70 (the same 5 days for 6 weeks regiment). I'm happy to say it was completely successful, and she recovered with no side effects from the treatment, so that 90% success rate is a really good sign.
    Second, let me say how inspiring you are by sharing your journey. I've been through some horrible crap, but nothing compares to a brain tumor (revisit) at 28. I hope you can understand how amazing you are, and how much you are touching people you may never meet.
    Finally, remember it is totally OK to laugh if that is the emotion that is surfacing. Because, (from experience) if you don't laugh then you will cry. I know that if I couldn't find the one funny bit of some of my horrible traumas I would have ended up curled up under my bed crying for days. -- So, laugh, cry, do what you need... just don't stuff away the feelings.

    I don't know why this is affecting me so much. I literally broke down crying, tears streaming down my face.
    Simone-
    As a person with a chronic illness and multiple disabilities, when you said, "I'm sick of being sick" and "I don't want to be the tumor girl, I want to be the girl who makes weird shit" it just hit me straight in the chest. I relate, so much. I can never know what it's like to be in your position, but I do know what it's like to have really hard medical conditions. It is so effing hard!!!! You can rage at it, you can scream, you can cry, but it will never go away. For me at least, it'll always be there, and I just have to deal with that. I have to get up every morning and be responsible and do things even if I don't want to, even if I'm not feeling it that day. I know it's not the same situation, but I feel like I may know a bit of how you're feeling. I hope everything works out, I hope your various procedures are safe and as painless as possible. I wish you good luck and good health.

Once it started growing again I had a major surgery to remove it And then a BUNCH of reconstructive surgeries. I never named mine (missed opportunity) but I did come home with a bunch of trinkets from the hospital from my surgeries. I know this sucks but you are stronger than you think. As someone who has brain cancer and has had radiation therapy in the the temporal lobe, that 90% success is pretty accurate I would say. And I can say that if they do it well, it does remarkably little extra damage. I know that because they had to hit it from a lot of different angles in my case. The angles made it hit an eyeball, my ear, my nose, and lots of other areas. The nose was an interesting experience, apparently, adults are not supposed to smell anything because of them doing that, but kids can, and I did even though I was 37 at the time. I still have my sight, hearing and smell.
    I didnt pick up any new side effects from the radiation, just lost a patch of hair that grew back. The chemo after that is a completely different story. That was not a fun year.
    All that said, as odd as it is, I have a super rare type of brain cancer that is very similar to your tumor in that it grows so slowly that most people with it die of other causes and the doctors have pretty much told me to live my life as best as I can because they have no clue when I will get hit again. So, that is what I do now. I do not let the tumor weigh over me, I just try and move on and improve where I am..., even if the annoying bugger has forced me to change jobs.

      On her t-shirt it looks like they actually removed the temporal lobe. Is that right? I know there's another hemisphere with similar functions but if they can do radiation and keep the lobe, why would they remove it?

      @schumachersbatman5094 6 років тому

Like the girl down the street who you never talk to very often but you know she's super nice and you'd never wish anything bad on her, that's like what you are to me, and I really hope this is just another hurdle for you. I'll be keeping watch.

    I feel for you Simone, When I was 7 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour, I had radiotherapy a year later due to regrowth. i'm now 20, at uni and living life to the full.
    Radiotherapy does really drain you, so take it easy. I'd be at school in the morning, go to radiotherapy after lunch and spend the rest of the day in bed exhausted.
    I still have the mask for radiotherapy after all this time. I consider it a bit of a trophy.
    I've been wanting to mount it on my wall with a pair of antlers for ages!
    I dearly hope it goes well, make sure to get plenty of rest, and remember, your health comes before us! Don't overdo yourself, a short twitter post is much easier than a video after all.

    This is such a perfect way of describing this experience. I’m also 28 and was diagnosed with a rare pancreatic tumor in 2017. I had a surgery to remove a third of my pancreas and my entire spleen, and only afterwards found out it they had caught it before it progressed. I’m headed back for another surgery in a few weeks because of complications, and it’s so comforting to see someone my age going through something like this when it feels like no one can relate. You explain yourself so eloquently, and I wish you nothing but health and happiness in the future.

      It's probably a Cobalt-60 Gamma Knife (so thank Nuclear Power, Canada's reactors specifically). As far as I know the concern is that the radiation damages a part of the brain unintentionally through operator or random error. This is a really high targeted dose to a specific region of the brain, so she wouldn't get radiation poisoning or anything.
      Radiology and Nuclear Physics is a really complex science that most people are horrendously misinformed on, which is why things like Fukushima get blown massively out of proportion. I'm a normal chemist and I only barely have a basic understanding of it, and it was nothing I learned in school, I had to go out of my way to read papers on the topic.

      @@drake6836 It's not that we'll never understand so much as that the topics that anti-science movements target (Nuclear science, Vaccines, GMO's) require an education in that area and are easy to misconstrue and then call out anyone who has an informed opinion as a "shill."
      They're also areas that have had notably poor communication skills with the public. Also, in the case of the nuclear energy, it was and still is actively targeted by the fossil fuel industry. Not sure if any scientific industry actually has a serious fear-mongering propaganda campaign against them, at least on that scale (to the point where people like Gregory Jackzo are appointed to the NRC to actively inhibit the Nuclear Energy industry so it will die). Haven't seen anything like that since the cover-up of leaded gasoline.

    Hi Simone, watching your videos is a surreal experience for me, because almost to a T you are going through exactly what I went through about a year ahead of you. My short story: 7cm brain tumor, removed in May of '17 (benign pituitary macroadenoma), eye injured by removal (cranial nerve III was badly distorted by tumor and did not handle decompression well) and so I wear and eye patch (actually, dark glasses lens now, bringing piracy into the 21st century!), six months later growth of remnant tumor was apparent on MRI, lived in Chicago and underwent proton beam therapy at Northwestern Medicine Feb-March '18 to put a stop to that, routine scans since, and here I am now watching your video. If you find yourself wondering what the path about 10 months ahead of you might look like, please don't hesitate to reach out! I am also a software engineer by trade and a technology and engineering nerd in general, so we probably have more in common than just large brain tumors :) and I'm still (mostly) intact after all of this, and so I believe strongly that you will be too!
