@@ebrach121 I've been overweight to morbidly obese my whole life too and I've never been shamed by a doctor for my weight (them pointing out your weight and telling you risks and encouraging weight loss isn't shaming a patient btw), but I've had issues dismissed because it was attributed to my weight instead of conducting a thorough investigation. I don't continue to see doctors like that though.. Most doctors I've seen (and I've seen a lot for all kinds of issues) mention it once and have been very supportive and kind. Do you just let your doctor talk at you without you setting boundaries? What help are you actually wanting? The suggestion of a low carb diet is completely sound.. What I've found from being large and being around other big people.. they are some of the worst people when it comes to taking offense if they're told they should lose weight, even if they're told out of fear for their health. How you take things is ultimately a YOU problem. So maybe self reflect as well and ask yourself honestly if you're willing to put in all the work required to lose weight.

I've been over weight my whole adult life and yes the bullying is definitely the worst especially from doctors, it seems to me that no matter what you go to see a doctor about they will blame your weight. I was born with rheumatoid arthritis and was diagnosed at around 5 years old but according to one doctor my weight has caused my arthritis when I pointed out to him that I'd had the arthritis since I was a baby he replied you must have been a fat baby😡 you would think that a doctor would understand that rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease and my weight had absolutely nothing to do with it. I was swimming and riding horses every day till I was 21 and had an accident that left me in a wheelchair for several years my weight skyrocketed I'm now back on my feet and slowly losing the weight but it's hard work

Honestly just any lowering of calories would probably cause some weight loss in extreme situations like this. Going from 4000 calories to the bare minimum of 1200 is just pretty extreme, it's literally coming from overeating to undereating.
Also there should be some talk with a dietitian who would recommend healthier replacements for food, for example fruit instead of candy, etc. The show has aged so poorly these days in terms of medical recommendations.

I think why he gives such a low calorie count is to work on getting less calories- I think Dr Now knows that many won’t get this low of calories, but drastically reducing what they consume will get them started on weight loss. Plus many need to drop weight as fast as they can because they are in dire circumstances.

Well, it didn’t. In fact, I ended up very overweight and I still feel the damage to my joints. It was only after I started talking to myself like Dr. Mike is talking here-using compassion and understanding to get to the root of my issues-that I saw improvement. 99% people who are at that weight is due to mental illness, trauma response or addiction to cope with certain situations. There is a reason you don’t see rich or even middle class people, who have access to help and health insurance, deal with these situations. They do not have to resort to having to use the bathroom or showering naked on national TV for help to pay for surgery and therapy. I cringe when I read how gym bros are claiming “they just need to eat keto/carnivore, snort protein powder and do CrossFit.” It’s much deeper than that. If you don’t focus on the root of the problem, the person will never get better.

    • @wellhellothere6347
      @wellhellothere6347 2 дні тому +69

99% of people also ignore that fact that the tobacco industry (you know, the ones who gave out free cigarets to soldiers in battle in WWI and WWII to addict them) took over the food industry, and used the same tactics to addict people to their highly processed and addictive foods. That makes it even harder for people. Rich people have access to cooks, better foods, and plastic surgery too. With that addition, I agree with you 100%

Do not believe that guy a thing, nor believe his knowledge, because judging by his look, he is also overweight, not extremely, but it shows. People need to listen their own advice, or go and "upgrade" their knowledge about the matter. Not everyone is affected the same with universal advice. Someone can lose weight for example even if consuming 2k calories, someone can lose weight even if eating junk food, someone may need different type of exercise. People have different variables.

What else do you expect Dr now to do? He gives the nutritionist, physical therapist and psychiatrist he even arranges for some patients to stay at the hospital where they provide all their food if he feels they would benefit from it. He genuinely cares about theses people. Apart from these he has sent some patients to an eating clinic where their food intake is controlled. Given a a guidance and resources, it’s honestly up to the person themselves to choose which way to go. I admit it’s a good Tv for the rest of us. But when I see how their kids and people around them suffer just because they can’t stop eating, I can’t help but get frustrated

Seeing videos like this breaks my heart..we lost my father in law during covid, he was over 500lbs, his organs couldn't handle him being sick and everything shut down. His girlfriend was over 400 and her organs also shut down and she passed away too. We found out we were pregnant exactly a week after they passed. It took a while to get over the anger because we told him SOOO many times that he needed to lose the weight so he could be around for his grandkids but he missed it, by a damn week. He had plans for weight loss surgery but cancelled them when he found out he could only be on a liquid diet for a little while after. Ugh it's so sad. The stomach could bust open and result in death. And don’t forget stomach stretches again if you keep eating the way you do before surgery. So, the challenges that are put there is for your own good.

Dr. Mike notes that he gives a diet and exercise program. It's in the papers he gives them and often their caretaker, too. He does ask them if they need anything to even just call. He offers therapy, physical therapy, dietician, etc. He really prefers they ask vs. force them.
I've watched *a lot* of this show. You can see he's trying so hard to get them to say they need help. Or to recognize what their main issue is.
Yeah, many times, his 'bedside' manner could use work.

I have seen him arrange accomodation for those patients who are homeless. We need more doctors like him who tells it how it is not cuddling the mentally weak patients. Not many understand why theses surgeries have challenges to get. Stomach could bust open after surgery if they stuff their face like they used to. Stomach doesn’t stop to stretch after surgery. What people don’t know is surgery isn’t magic, but it’ll help you achieve your goals easily if you put in the work ( change eating habits)

I think these patients always have to talk to a psyvhologist from the beginning of the treatment. Many of these have psychological problems what the reason is for their excessive weight. Even if they don't have problems it is always good to talk to a professional who can support them in their weightloss.

Maybe they need to consult a psychiatrist as well. I have a loved one who is obese and with chronic kidney disease and his nephrologist recommended that.
On the other hand, I noticed I'm eating less than 1600 kcal a day since I started psychiatric medication and that wasn't my goal but a side effect of the treatment, I'm less hungry and I find junk food/sweets less appealing so I see how it might benefit people who have a food addiction.

10:38 as someone who has gastric bypass i remember being fine for about a month. You have zero food cravings and you are so focused on the prescribe diet you are very numb. However, I remember breaking down crying around week 4-5. Bad day at work and my usual coping mechanism was gone. I cried out of frustration, embarrassment, shame all of it. It was bad. But eventually I adjusted.

I had a basic nutrition class in college and it was enough to know you can't recommend a 1200 kcal/day diet to everyone, even when they're very obese. There are several formulas to know how many calories would be a "calorie deficit" in your individual case and it rarely equals 1200 (in the last 10 years I bet there are new calculations that take into account her ethnicity too). I remember our professor making us write down hours of sleep, how many hours we spent sitting/standing up, time cleaning the house/walking to places/caring for children/studying among other things.

I have to say your content is amazing. I enjoy learning as much as I can, but I’ve always had a hard time learning anything medical. I’m so squeamish and I possibly have a touch of hypochondria, I usually start feeling depressed, sick and generally bad learning anything medical, but the way you produce this type of content is perfect for me. I never get the squeamish depressing feelings I normally get. So Thankyou dr.mike for making the most digestible medical content.

the way they treat this as her just being lazy and eating as if she doesn't care it's insane. it needs to be a tiny steps treatment. very insensitive of this doctor who's treating her, cmon, give her the tool she needs instead of telling her what to do. it's a disorder, a medical condition like any other. i'm sorry for the way these doctors treat her, she's clearly a special and beautiful soul, she deserves better! praying for you honey, you'll get there! sending you and your family lots of love ❤

I love watching Dr Mike because he keeps it so real. I’m pre diabetic and have a BMI close to 50. I’ve been seeing an endocrinologist to monitor my a1c see a nutritionist work out but still can’t lose weight , I’ve had 5 doctors recommended and even prescribe be the weight loss medications but the big bad guy (insurance) won’t cover it unless I meet that diagnosis for type 2 diabetes. Soooo? In order to get my A1c and weight under control to PREVENT getting that diabetes diagnosis….i have to be diabetic to get the medication i need. It sucks truly, I’ve had so many doctors say I would greatly benefit from weight loss medications but insurance won’t even approve it. How can I be healthy when insurance won’t give me access to something that can improve my life.

Hello Sarah, that sounds like a practical approach. Do you find having a specific list helpful, or do you prefer more flexibility when it comes to food choices? I imagine it can be tricky to balance what’s good for your goals with what you enjoy eating. What’s been your go-to meal or snack lately?

Honestly, I think it’s interesting to watch how he helps people turn their lives around. So, if you’re not watching for personal advice, is it more about the motivation or just the drama of it all? Either way, it says a lot about you that you’re so curious about people’s journeys.

Dr Mike is wonderful to watch & with 22 medical conditions of my own I have come across some horrible doctors, I'm in the UK but if I was in the USA I would definitely try & get dr Mike & his dogs haha. Sorry for the misunderstanding

I love this so much, you addressed every single problem I have with Dr. Now's approach to weight loss with his patients, especially the sudden drop to 1200 calories a day. I'm relatively healthy (compared to a few years ago, I have Crohn's that's currently in remission after getting an ileostomy) and I will pass right out trying to be even moderately active on 1200 a day. I can't even imagine trying to do literally anything while carrying an extra 500ish pounds around. I wish he would give more credit to his patients, instead of following every praise with a BUT. And when someone doesn't meet his expectations he can get outright vicious. You'd think he would realize that overweight people are exposed to disparaging comments by people every single day, and obviously that isn't the way to motivate someone. You have yourself a new subscriber!

I really understand the weight loss doctor’s point of view. I believe the psychiatric aspect is very important. He has years of experience.
I have friends who have had at loss surgery, diets can be restrictive, cravings don’t really go away, feeling of fullness happens. Usually after the first successful year, it can be difficult to continue the regimen.
Exercise, and psychiatry regimens, as well as supportive families can help with success . I wish the best for those who face this journey.

That is what I finally had to tell myself. There will always be a "Holiday" or "Special Occasion" or "Just this once" around the corner. You can't be successful if you treat these as excuses to delay (or break) a new lifestyle rather than learn how to navigate them in a healthy manner.
