How to replace a close coupled toilet syphon | Dudley Turbo

  • Toilet syphons are normally reliable, but the diaphragm inside of the syphon can eventually fail. Replacing the syphon on a high level or low level toilet is much easier than on a close coupled toilet. Here we are replacing a standard toilet syphon with a Dudley Turbo 88 syphon, which is a dual flush (so it saves water) and also is in two parts so the next time you need to replace the syphon diaphragm it is much easier. You can buy the parts at your local plumbers merchants or even get them on ebay- fave.co/2p1srzg

    I watched this video a few days before replacing the syphon, the “ home maintenance technician “ that my niece pays an insurance premium for said it was a difficult job, the cistern would probably crack and a new cistern and replacement tiling would be required!, and wouldn’t touch it
    I bought a new syphon and close coupling kit for £15, the old wing nuts and bolts snapped off when I used an adjustable for leverage so I was fortunate because I don’t have a small grinder, after that everything was comparatively straight forward, many thanks for a very informative video

    Thanks a bundle ~ I have changed the flush Syphon and the intakes on several toilets in the past, but never a Coupled Toilet ~ just looking at the set up made me pause (for a long time ~ then I found your Video ~ Outstanding ~ even got hold of a "Dudley Duoflush (about £20 in 2013) Split Syphon" so that next time the diaphragm gives up I don't have to take everything apart ... I am now sitting here waiting to check for any leakage (15 min & no signs)
    Once again ~ Thank you big time

    Thanks. I had done this job once before in another toilet and had to get a plumber in eventually as I couldn't t stop the inlet from leaking. This time I bought a Dudley Duo, on the advice of the helpful plumbers merchants (before viewing this clip) and managed to fit it perfectly this time with confidence after watching this very helpful demonstration. I even refitted the rusty close coupling kit I had removed as I hadn't bought one to replace it, though I did use LS-X jointing compound just to be on the safe side.

    Hiya mate, excellent video, well done! Had no experience taking apart a cistern and viewed this twice before buying the parts and tackling the job. Stupid loo was 20+ years old & had a "siphon bomb" system, so even with a new siphon it just filled the bowl and wouldn't flush, even after taking it apart 10 times! Gave up, bought a complete new toilet after finding out siphon bombs stopped being made 15 years ago! Couldn't have tackled it without you though, thank you very much!

    Simply amazing, ultimatehandyamn. Most DIY books I have show you how to do this where there are no problems. But I know DIY stuff is never straight forward. But here you have covered every problem which may occur and I now feel more confident about changing my daiphram valve. And that cutting the rusted nuts off with a cordless angle driver wouldn't be one of my madder ideas. A big thanks for this. To be honest I get a bit nervous doing some types DIY, so your site is a godsend.

    Yes your video helped me do this today.. ...no leaks although,I went for the sealent solution as a backup around my bolt through the cistern, and below the rubber seal and before the large plastic nut that tightens the syphon, as the previous plummer had done the same thing....just a precaution...many thanks

      Well done for doing this yourself 👍🏼
      Did you isolate the toilet locally, or did you turn off the main stop tap to the house? If you turned off the main stop tap, it might be a flow issue. At my house the main stop tap is only open 1/8 of a turn, if I open it any more than that we get really bad water hammer.

    Would you believe it: Christmas eve tomorrow and our big kids are home for the holiday. First impact: syphon on the close coupled cistern broken by an overenthusiastic flush: The plunger just snapped-off the washer inside the syphon. My DIY manual says this is too complicated for an amateur to fix, but your video is really helpful and simple to follow. If I can just get a Dudley Duoflush tomorrow morning we should still be able to eat Christmas dinner without worries! Thanks UH.

    Clear explanation. What causes it to keep running down into the bowl after flush? Is there an internal overflow built in thats causing it?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  4 роки тому

      Yes, it has an internal overflow, but that is not normally the cause of the problem. Either the water fill valve needs adjusting, so that the water level is lower, or the water fill valve needs a new washer or replacing.

    Followed this tips in this video today. Got away with just replacing the piston in the syphon. Total cost £1.20. Sorted! Mine is not a close-coupled toilet, so didn't have to remove the cistern which made it easier, as mentioned in the video. A tip I picked up is that you can now buy syphons which are in two pieces which means you can repair or replace just the moving bits without disturbing the pipework or the cistern. Why they weren't all designed like this in the first place is a mystery.

    How do you tell what the capacity of the cistern is, 7l or 9l
    When I visit my family in Australia, they have normal light switches and sockets in their bathrooms and I have not heard of any accidents, so you can grind away with a mains operated angle grinder until your hearts content in Aussie!!
    Thanks for the video, it was very well explained with attention to detail

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 років тому

      +icespeckledhens
      Sometimes it says in the cistern, but if not you can measure it when emptying it with a jug etc.
      They also use 230v in most of Europe and you often see light switches and sockets in bathrooms abroad, but I guess you can never be too careful as there are some really stupid people out there that might try and use the angle grinder when taking a bath LOL.

      It's people like Ultimate Handyman taking the time to share their knowledge and experience that keeps me coming back to UA-cam to learn more and more. I'm typing this with the cistern on the floor and parts around it. Although I've done this before, I find there's always something to learn, like why not to use Silicon, and paying attention to good clean up before assembling things back together. The £18 device looks well worth the money to save the hassle and time it takes to remove the cistern, clean it all up, and install it again for the sake of a small plastic disc.

      Ultimate Handyman In your expert opinion, would this help solve having to press the handle down hard and fast every time to activate the flush? Due to weak diaphragm?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  6 років тому +1

      Yes, or you can remove the existing diaphragm and fit a new one. It's often better to just get a new syphon though!

    Very good, clear instructions, easy to follow. I now feel confident to fix my non flushing cistern.
    I see you have one dislike, I can only assume that must be from another plumber. You know, the type of plumber that likes to draw breath through his teeth before telling you it ain't going to be cheap.
    Well done, great video.

    Thank you so much for that video! It told me almost everything I needed to know. I didn't know beforehand that I would need a new close-coupling kit. I certainly needed that!
    The membrane on the original siphon had indeed broken. I got a £20 replacement from Screwfix and installed that. Now I have dual flush (good for me, being on a water meter) and also an internal overflow (the external overflow is still there, of course, but it won't be causing harm to my building if something happens). The new one is, like yours, far easier to replace than the old type if there is a problem in the future.

    i live in the U.S. and watch your videos mainly for entertainment even though most of what you post will probably not help me much here but I have gotten a lot of great tips from you. I never thought just how different american toilets can be from U.K. toilets. Our toilets have not changed much in a long time, nearly all of the guts in american toilets are universal, only thing that could be different would be the size of the flapper, which is what releases all the water into the bowl, but even then there are only two sizes and its easy to tell them apart. There are a couple of different styles of toilets but most (as in about 90 percent) are the same, white porcelain, with a 2 or 3 inch flapper (3 inch being post 2005 and 2 being pre 2005) and a single fill valve. Great videos though!

      Thanks, I knew that they used flapper valves in the US, but have never seen one close up.

    Hi there, the 2 white tabs on the side !!!! what is the advantage of taking one out? .. I've just fitted this system and in all honesty can see no difference in the power of the flush ... I have no blockage and have the same as you here, but not sure why no power in the flush ... I can only put about 5/6 squares of tissue in and takes about 3 flush's ... any idea's please??

      You'll have to read the instructions I'm afraid. It was years ago when I installed mine and I can't remember the plug combination.The two or more plastic plugs control the amount of water used for the flush.If your syphon is the same as mine, you need to hold the handle in the down position for a few seconds for a full flush.

      Hi. On the Turbo 88 you push and release the lever for a full flush and push and hold for a partial flush.
      Regarding the white plugs....
      6L Nominal flush (cistern & WC pan installed from 1st Jan 2001):
      Remove upper white plug only.
      7L Nominal flush (cistern & WC pan installed after 1st Jan 1993):
      Remove lower white plug only.
      9L Nominal flush (WC pan installed before 1st Jan 1993):
      Leave both white plugs in place.

    This was so helpful, thanks! I wish I'd watched yours before I just installed one. I've got a small leak from the bottom of the cistern. Really wish I wasn't going to have to take it off again! Argh.!

    I was all set for a long job on mine. But after watching this video I realised I had a 3 part, that just disconnects and lifts right out. Nice.
    Great video.
    P.S: My membrane was ripped. It is a sad fact that they don't make it easy just to replace the sheet of plastic, environmentally irresponsible.

    I've had issues with the flush on my toilet for a while. got a plumber to come and take a look and of course it worked fine that day. After a few days of taking a few times to flush, it finally packed in altogether on the bank holiday weekend. This video was an absolute lifesaver for me. Without it I would have had to wait several days for a plumber and find someone to wait for them whilst I was at work. Having watched the video several times, I made a list f everything I might need, then went on the Bank holiday Monday to buy it all. Had a lot of difficulty getting the cistern off the wall because of rusted butterfly nuts and so had to cut them off. following the video though, everything else was fairly straightforward, even for someone like me who does as little DIY as possible. Great tip on the syphons that don't need removing in future to replace the membrane. Thank you for posting this.
